Addis Abeba | አዲስ አበባ

Addis Ababa was founded by the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II. However, ethnic Oromo Ethiopians had lived on the land before the foundation of Addis Ababa, in a small settlement known under the Oromo name Finfinne. Other parts were called Fil wiha ("hot springs") in Amharic. Menelik, as King of Shewa, had found Mount Entoto a useful base for military operations in the south of his realm, and in 1879 visited the reputed ruins of a medieval town, and an unfinished rock church that showed proof of an Ethiopian presence in the area prior to the campaigns of Ahmad Gragn. His interest in the area grew when his wife Taytu began work on a church on Entoto, and Menelik endowed a second church in the area.

However the immediate area did not encourage the founding of a town due to the lack of firewood and water, so settlement actually began in the valley south of the mountain in 1886. Initially, Taytu built a house for herself near the "Filwoha" hot mineral springs, where she and members of the Showan Royal Court liked to take mineral baths. Other nobility and their staffs and households settled the vicinity, and Menelik expanded his wife's house to become the Imperial Palace which remains the seat of government in Addis Ababa today. Addis Ababa became Ethiopia's capital when Menelik II became Emperor of Ethiopia. The town grew by leaps and bounds. One of Emperor Menelik's contributions that is still visible today is the planting of numerous eucalyptus trees along the city streets.

On 5 May 1936, Italian troops occupied Addis Ababa during the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, making it the capital of Italian East Africa. Addis Ababa was governed by the Italian Governors of Addis Ababa from 1936 to 1941. After the Italian army in Ethiopia was defeated by the British army (with the help of the Ethiopian patriots), during the Liberation of Ethiopia, Emperor Haile Selassie returned to Addis Ababa on 5 May 1941—five years to the very day after he had departed—and immediately began the work of re-establishing his capital.

Emperor Haile Selassie helped form the Organization of African Unity in 1963, and invited the new organization to keep its headquarters in the city. The OAU was dissolved in 2002 and replaced by the African Union (AU), also headquartered in Addis Ababa. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa also has its headquarters in Addis Ababa. Addis Ababa was also the site of the Council of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in 1965.

Cities in Africa that will be unrecogniseable by the end of the decade-

Addis, Lagos, Accra, Kigali, Luanda for sure

I agree with popa1980 on the last photo.Those high standards seen there keep dust,dirt,flooded rds,broken curbsides and overgrown bushes as in one pic above at bay giving city residents quality of life.
Barring costs,that is what african cities need to aspire to-a maintenance culture.Don't know much on addis but,we tend to maintain well upmarket areas(at least i know of Nrb) and not demand such high quality maintenance and accoutability citywide.

That last pic is in a location that was a real dump just a few years ago (2003-4), so it shows how fast an area can be redeveloped.

At times I do tend to forget Addis is the "capital of Africa" and to be honest it should be looking better than it is. Hopefully it's a matter of time.

So claiming everything post 70s is Chinese built is correct? Not even most, let alone everything. China itself only started developing at the end of the 70s. It only started investing in Africa in the 00s, a full 20 years later.

African cities(with SA,morocco being exceptions) need keep streets and sidewalks clean and instill a maintenance culture on building owners in order to achieve that "polished city" image.It takes a maintenance culture and i'm not sure many of us have it.


We all aspire to rid cities of slums but its not an easy task.They spring up coz they're super cheap and close to places of work.I've seen cities build low cost housing which these folks refuse because it comes with a hike in rent or involves spending bus fare they can ill afford.

Hope someday we'll find a lasting solution

Well, back in the seventies, China did help many African nations because of ideological reasons (non-aligned block, communism maybe Ethiopia wasn't one of them though) but that was pretty tiny compared to the real investments later on.

But still yeah, LOL at the idea everything in Africa is made from China.
