Yup Perak was the fastest developing state during the days of the British occupation and the Japanese had similar plans as well.Kuala Lumpur was a small mining town similar to Ipoh those days. It's just that Malaysia do not spread out their development throughout the country properly.Thailand is also experiencing lotsa development currently. They should follow countries like Korea and Taiwan which both are almost the same size as Peninsular Malaysia.Life's so dull without the bright neon lights and malls.By the way nice meeting you guys.I am from Ipoh.

Thank you for this lovely series of pictures of your home town of Taiping, Zahir! :) You comment on them very nicely, so as to make this thread really enjoyable. :okay:

Of course Malaysia is so very strange and foreign to me ...

I hope Taiping will be able to keep all its historic and colonial architecture, and to keep it in good shape, including the shop houses on the main road in the city center that you show, and of course also the two schools, the Museum, and all the other buildings, both seen here and unseen.

Sorry to hear the weather was so bad during your visit! :(

The Taiping Lake Garden ... what a beautiful city park! The picture on top of page 2 is like a painting ... sheer poetry ... *dream*

Thank you again for this beautiful thread, Zahir! :)

WH...

Glad that you enjoy those picture. Sorry that I didn't able to show you the rest as I left the other card back at my hometown. Me and my short term memory lost :ohno:

Bad weather? No need to be worry. Taiping rain practically everyday. Like Seattle I guess. Rain alot. Just that the kind of rain that fall down is different. Here like thundery shower. So used to it already. Maybe that is the reason why I like rainy day when I am in KL...remind me of Taiping. Then again, Taiping never experience any flood, which is a good thing ;)

What you see in Taiping is actually what you will experience and get when you visiting my hometown. It just a simple laid back small town where time just passes you by. No traffic jam and no all this hectic lifestyle experience. Just a nice tranquality environment. Retired people like to live in Taiping actually. Wonder why :D

Taiping Lake Garden, the picture I took is 1/3 of the whole park. The night safari picture that TYW and Pablo asked, also located inside the garden.

At the moment I do think Taiping will remain as it is. Previously there was a plan to build a high rise condominium at the lake garden side but was heavily apposed by the local people. I think both good and bad decision at the same time. :)

RM60m cable car for Bukit Larut planned
By : P. Chandra Sagaran

IPOH: The state government has approved in principle the construction of a RM60 million cable car system at Bukit Larut in Taiping.

The contract will go to "a company with a good track record" with the assurance that the resort's ecological settings would not be disturbed.

State Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming said the project had the support of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the Department of Environment.

A visitor will take 11 minutes to reach the 1,250m peak of the resort from the bottom of the mountain, compared with the 30-minute, 13km ride via four-wheel-drive or government Land Rover.

"The cable will stretch up between 5 and 6km and will have 26 cable cars in the first phase and 46 cars which can carry 1,000 visitors."

Construction will be done by using helicopters.

Pilling works will use the latest technology to ensure the fauna and flora are untouched.

Nga said: "The company, which has a good track record of operating the Langkawi cable car system for the past five years with a 100 per cent safety record, will make a prospective study and will take about a year to complete the project."

The hill is a haven for birds such as the rhinoceros hornbill, large moths and butterflies, beetles, monkeys and Pope's Pit Viper.

Other attractions include a playground, watch tower, suspension bridge, camp site and century-old buildings.

There is also the 90-year-old Sri Kaliamman Temple.

Formerly known as Max-well Hill, Bukit Larut is the oldest hill station in the country dating back to 1884.

On another matter, Nga said the state executive council had approved the conversion of a 5.33ha site for the new Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Poi Lam building in Seri Klebang here to replace the school in Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang, which had become congested with 4,000 pupils.

The school was built in 1919.

The school would only pay RM1 as quit rent.

Present yesterday was the chairman of board of governors for the school, Datuk Lim Kok Cheong.

1000 visitors per hour/day? Sometimes, the report needs to be in more detail when it comes to number/capacity. I have been there once but nothing impressed me. I think Gunung Jerai is more attractive than Bkt Larut a.k.a. Maxwell Hill.

Fomca against cable car
By : P. Chandra Sagaran

IPOH: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) wants the state government to put off plans to build a cable car at Bukit Larut so as not to disturb the eco-system.

Its president, Datuk N. Marimuthu, said the proposal was first made in 1997 but was abandoned in 2007 after a memorandum was sent to then menteri besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

"We have also confirmed that the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) does not support the project, contrary to a statement that they are for it."said.

Marimuthu also took a potshot at the DAP, saying that when the party was in the opposition in the state, they had supported Fomca in its bid to stop any development at Bukit Larut.

"The hill belongs to future generations and I urge Taiping residents to protest against this ridiculous idea."

Marimuthu said there were several reasons why the project should not be implemented.

Among them is the need to protect the 21.53 square km water catchment area and the unstable slope which recorded loss of soil at 150 tonnes per hectare a year, making it unsuitable for man-made structures.

The hill had been classified as one of the "regional centres of plant diversity" under the United Nations Environment Programme but now risks losing that status.

In 1910, some 7,130ha were gazetted as forest reserves. In 1962, a further 2,747ha were gazetted as the "Larut Hills virgin jungle reserve". It was also acknowledged as a habitat for flora and fauna in 2002 by the Federal Government.

Sanitation and solid waste management projects would also force animals to leave their sanctuary, said Marimuthu.

State Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming had said on Thursday a RM60 million project had been approved in principle.

He had said the company to be awarded the project had been told not to endanger the environment.

Construction work would be carried out using helicopters so that the flora and fauna would not be harmed.

The cable would stretch between 5km and 6km. It would have 26 to 46 cars, capable of carrying 1,000 visitors on an 11-minute trip to the top.

Formerly known as Maxwell Hill, Bukit Larut is the oldest hill station in the country, dating back to 1884.

Government four-wheel-drive vehicles now ferry visitors up a 13km road up the 1,250-metre hill.

Indahkan Menara Condong

Oleh ANI AWANG
utusanperak@utusan.com.my

Bukit Larut Cable Car Project Faces Scepticism
January 20, 2009 20:30 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- The proposed RM60-million cable car project at Bukit Larut in Taiping, which has been approved in principle by the Perak state government, has come under heavy fire from many quarters who are sceptical over its feasibility.

Bukit Larut, at about 1,250 metres above sea level, was previously known as Maxwell Hill. Said to be Malaysia's oldest hill station, having been founded in 1884, it is also a nature reserve and is noted for its cool climate and natural scenic beauty.

Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief executive Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Annuar Zaini questioned the recovery factor over its relatively high capital investment as the historical hill resort did not have strong enough tourist traffic to support such a costly project.

"I don't think people would go to Taiping for the cable car. It's just like when Kuala Lumpur had the Eye of Kuala Lumpur (ferris wheel). You can see that the tourists who made use of it were mostly locals.

"There are better cable cars in other countries and why would they (foreign tourists) go to Taiping for a cable car ride? In the early stage, or at most two years, it will create a lot of excitement.

"But after one ride, I don't think people will go for a second visit. And that will be the time when the (financial) problem starts creeping in," he said, adding almost all cable car operators in Malaysia did not make enough to cover their operational costs.

Annuar said the previous Perak state government had also proposed a cable car project there but the financial calculations showed that such a project was not feasible.

"To bring in tourist dollars, you really have to know what is it that the tourists want," he said, adding that state government would do better by beautifying the natural attractions on Bukit Larut.

Annuar reminded the present Perak state government to learn from the mistakes of the previous state administration which built an airport in Pulau Pangkor and the Penang state government's recent folly in agreeing to host the Kings of Tennis Match which was called off at the last minute.

"(Most) people prefer to go to Pangkor by boat. The airport there today is just a white elephant," he said.

Annuar also expressed concern over the potential ecological impact that the cable car project would have on Bukit Larut as the hill was also a water catchment area.

He said the state government should invite views from the people.

"After the hearing and if you still think it's a go, then you should fine tune it as the interest of the people and the state is paramount.

People are concerned about not spoiling Taiping.

"And if it's a failure, it will become a major eyesore and the people of Taiping and Perak will have to suffer. Just like coral reefs, once they are gone, you can't get them back," said the Taiping-born Annuar.

Malaysian Nature Society president Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Mohd Nor, who was also against the cable car up in Bukit Larut, said: "Bukit Larut is a nice hill resort. I don't see much attraction up there to build a cable car. What for? What's really there to see? I am totally against it and I find it ridiculous.

"If they want to continue, they must have a public hearing and talk to non-governmental organisations and the public and listen to our opinions before doing anything."

Kamunting state assemblyman Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid said Taiping "has many other tourist attractions without having to have such an expensive project".

"What's the purpose of going up there on a cable car? Are they going to turn it into another Genting?" he asked.

"The masterplan must be made public and it must be very very thorough. The cost benefit analysis must be done. Also the government must consider, Bukit Larut is a favoured spot for local joggers, what will happen to them if you have this sort of development?" Zahir asked.

Meanwhile, a number of people have expressed their displeasure over the proposal in a website. In the http://taipingtalk.com/bukitlarut/ website, 57 out of 65 persons, including some from overseas, objected to the project.

The majority of the respondents stated that Bukit Larut should remain with its rustic charm and a trip up there in a four-wheel drive vehicle was all part of that adventurous experience.

Fomca against Bukit Larut cable car project
2009/01/23 Bernama

IPOH, Fri: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) today called on the Perak government not to destroy Taiping’s natural heritage by going ahead with the proposed 6km cable car project to the top of Bukit Larut in the township.

Fomca president Datuk Marimuthu Nadason said the state government had repeatedly been reminded on the sensitive ecosystem in Bukit Larut and the effects the project would have on its flora and fauna and water catchment area.

“It is the responsibility of any government to ensure the protection and preservation of the ecosystem for the benefit of future generations. The government has a role of safeguarding the future of society. So, do not destroy the Taiping people’s heritage,” he said in a memorandum to Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin with copies faxed to media offices here.

A copy of the memorandum which calls for the cable car project to be stopped, was also each sent to the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Doughlas Unggah Embas and Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor.

It is stated in the memorandum that besides being a water catchment area and gazetted as a forest reserve in 1910, Bukit Larut’s location in a high-risk area according to the “erosion risk” map, is among the justifications not to go ahead with the cable car project.

“The stability of the cable car poles will be a big question, while there will also be a higher risk of landslips occurring if the hille car service.

“More tourists means more solid waste and rubbish left by them, besides causing disturbance to the animal species in the area. Fomca totally disagrees with the Perak government’s plan without a careful study carried out. Such an environment should be enjoyed in its natural form with no disturbance.

“It is the responsibility of all to ensure that our natural resources and heritage are protected and used intelligently for our future generations to also enjoy them,” he added.

The cable car project for Bukit Larut was first proposed in 1997 but the idea was abandoned in 2007 after a protest memorandum was sent to the then Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

However, on Jan 15 this year, state Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transportation Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming announced that the Perak government had approved the project.

Nga said the project was expected to start soon and be completed in a year, thus becoming another draw for tourists to visit Perak.

Najib: All Projects In Northern Corridor According To Schedule

PUTRAJAYA, July 9 (Bernama) -- All projects under the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) are proceeding according to schedule, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Thursday.

Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the government has allocated RM750 million to the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) to the develop the area.

"Basically, they are on schedule. However, some of the projects are pilot in nature in the sense that we want to try out the project before we implement on a large scale," he told reporters after chairing the third NCIA meeting here.

Najib said the projects in the NCER master plan covered the major economic sectors of agriculture, manufacturing and tourism, supported by the infrastructure, education, human capital and social development sectors.

"Various projects are being implemented on a pilot basis, including the Amali Agro Entrepreneur Centre in Kampung Bukit Kura, Kedah, which is aimed at promoting agriculture on a commercial basis," he said.

The project showcases the integrated agricultural concept, with the activities ranging from planting, chicken rearing to marketing.

The government is also developing a pilot project under the SawahKU Maju programme, which involves an area of 81 hectares in Gunung Semanggol, Perak, with the aim of increasing padi production by eight to 10 tonnes per hectare.

For manufacturing, Najib said the government was implementing an excellence centre programme in the Penang Free Industrial Zone to raise the capability of engineering graduates to meet the needs of investors in the electronics industry, with the operations expected to start end of this year.

For the tourism sector, he said a master plan has been prepared to develop the Belum tropical forest in Temenggor, Perak, with priority given to conservation of the rich natural resources.

"We are also developing Taiping, Perak, as a heritage tourism town and with a special allocation for the Safari Taiping programme," he added.

Najib said the government was also developing the Edu Citi-Tel pilot project to provide integrated hostel facilities in Taiping for Standard Five and Six pupils from families in rural areas and with low income.

An infrastructure project involved upgrading 351 kilometres of roads under the Muda Agricultural Development Authority in Ampang Jajar, Kedah, at a cost of RM84 million and construction is expected to be completed in stages from May 2009 to April 2010, he said.

The government, he added, was developing Taman Teknologi Pauh in Perlis, an area of 30.3 hectares, with the aim of diversifying sources of economic growth and job opportunities.

Erosion watch at Bukit Larut
Tuesday July 28, 2009 By CHRISTINA KOH

The Perak Government will direct the developer of the Tea Garden Restaurant project on Bukit Larut in Taiping to take precautionary measures to prevent severe erosion.

State Health, Local Government, Consumer Affairs, Environment, Public Transportation and Non-Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the developer was now clearing the land for the project’s septic tank system.

He told reporters after a recent inspection of the project site 636m above sea level that the state would ensure that the developer planted grass cover once the clearing was done.

He said the Department of Environment would monitor the situation.

Dr Mah said this following complaints that Bukit Larut, a popular tourist destination and sensitive water catchment area, was appa-rently being threatened by erosion and indiscriminate dumping of rubbish.

The RM4mil Tea Garden project, a coffee house built under the Ninth Malaysia Plan to cater to visitors and trekkers, is expected to be completed in July next year.

Dr Mah said a check on a nearby hostel project, costing RM3.7mil under the state government, showed no signs of erosion as alleged.

“The foundation looks solid and an additional RM900,000 was spent on slope protection.

“This shows that we are very serious on this issue,” he added.

He said natural erosion was bound to happen on any mountain or hill.

“What’s more important are the measures we took to deal with it,” he added.

On Fomca president Datuk N. Marimuthu’s statement on the hill’s environmental damage that was carried in the media, Dr Mah said the state government welcomed the views and help of the consumer association group.

He stressed that the state was not trying to hide anything, adding that he and various state department heads had themselves come forward to investigate the reports.

He disputed Marimuthu’s complaints of illegal logging at Bukit Larut, saying that he found no signs of logging activities and that it was not possible to bring timber down the hill’s narrow road.

AEON Credit gains on cash-to-credit shift

The company’s business is growing despite the economic slowdown

KUALA LUMPUR: The current economic downturn, which has put many companies in the red, seems to have an opposite effect for AEON Credit Service (M) Bhd so far.

The locally-incorporated Japanese consumer finance provider turned in a commendable performance despite the challenging environment with a 46% jump in net profit to RM48.7mil for the financial year ended Feb 20 (FY09) versus FY08 while revenue rose 23.1% to RM186.9mil.

Business also grew in the first quarter ended May 20 with an increase of 20.4% in net profit to RM12.2mil versus the previous corresponding quarter while revenue improved 21.8% to RM51.5mil.

Managing director Naruhito Kuroda expects revenue in FY10 to experience double-digit growth albeit slightly lower than the 23.1% achieved in FY09 with bottom line following the same trend.

“The trend in consumer spending has changed from cash to credit since last year and this is good, especially for our easy-payment scheme and credit card businesses.

“Our merchants have also migrated their focus or marketing strategy from cash to credit. They have recorded double-digit growth in the past few months by providing such options to consumers,” he told StarBiz.

Kuroda is also upbeat that the upcoming festive season, including Hari Raya, Christmas and Chinese New Year, will help boost the group’s business in its second half.

“The outlook for the company is good. We are very positive about our financials,” he said.

HwangDBS Vickers Research Sdn Bhd expects AEON Credit to register a 16.1% growth in net profit to RM56.6mil year-on-year in FY10.

This would be driven mainly by the recognition of interest income from new receivables of RM959mil as well as unearned interest of RM190mil carried forward from FY09.

“After registering a three-year net profit compounded annual growth rate of 53% between FY06 and FY09, AEON Credit’s future growth momentum, while still on the increase, is expected to come in slower due to the high base effect,” it noted.

Despite the focus on growing the business, Kuroda pointed out that the group was also more prudent in giving out financing to its customers in current economic conditions.

Non-performing loans (NPLs) in FY09 were 1.87% but were slightly lower at 1.85% in the first quarter ended May 20.

“Our aim is to keep NPLs below 2% and we do not expect to see any spike in the numbers.

“It should still be manageable as our easy-payment business consists of financing small-ticket items, such as consumer durables and motorcycles, with low monthly instalments ranging from RM80 to RM150 per month, so payment should still not be much of a problem,” he said.

However, Kuroda admitted that NPLs were higher for its credit card business but “was still manageable”.

AEON Credit has also put plans into gear to expand its product range. It plans to introduce new card products, such as a prepaid card and loyalty point card, next year.

“We also aim to expand the easy-payment business to include used-car financing. We have started testing the market in the Klang Valley with five used-car dealers last year.”

Financing is up to RM50,000 and total receivables for used-car financing so far is about RM2mil.

“We may be more aggressive next year once we have a better idea of NPLs, credit recovery and demand trends for such financing,” Kuroda said, adding that the group was not in direct competition with financial institutions as it focused on smaller loan amounts.

AEON-Biz, which offers product financing such as for computer systems and copiers for small and medium enterprises, is another new area for the group.

AEON Credit started the business a year ago with a financing limit of up to RM50,000.

“It is still in the testing stage but there is potential for such business. We just need to create more awareness that we are offering such financing,” Kuroda said.

Plans are also under way to open new branches in Segamat, Setiawan, Taiping, Temerloh, Sungai Petani, Sibu and Sandakan to expand its network to smaller towns and cities to cater to a wider group of consumers.

Each branch is estimated to cost RM500,000. The group plans to open two branches in FY10 and another five in FY11.

AEON Credit, which now has 125,000 credit card members, aims to grow this figure to 180,000 by FY10 and 350,000 by FY12.

It is targeting card members (credit cards, express cards, loyalty point cards and prepaid cards) to grow to over two million within three years.

Kuroda aims to achieve this via tie-ups with partners, collaboration with sister company AEON Co (M) Bhd as well as improving the benefits and services offered to customers.

AEON Co currently has a J-Card member base of about 850,000.

Cable car project for Bukit Larut on again

THE aborted cable car project to ferry visitors up Bukit Larut in Taiping is on again.

The project, unveiled by the then state Public Utility and Infrastructures Committee chairman Datuk Ho Cheng Wang, was shelved following protests by environmentalists who felt that the water catchment area at its foothill could be undermined.

Taiping Municipal Council president Omor Saad however dismissed such a fear, saying that the project would not affect the environment.

“If the project complies with environmental regulations, there won’t be any harm,” he told reporters after attending the swearing-in ceremony of town councillors in Taiping yesterday.

Omor said work on the RM65mil project, akin to the one in Langkawi, was expected to commence either in April or May this year.

“Once completed, we expect the town to record an additional 500,000 visitors annually,” he added.

He said an agreement involving the project developer and the Perak government was being finalised.

Responding to a question, he said tickets for the cable car ride would be about RM13 or RM15 per head for locals and a higher rate for foreigners.

Earlier in his speech, Omor said Taiping residents would soon enjoy a proper stage bus service for the various residential areas.

He said the pilot project, being undertaken by the Perak government, would probably take off in April. Apart from Taiping, Manjung has also been chosen for the pilot project, he said.

-Good to know good investment is coming in to Taiping.

More R&D activities being transferred to Taiping facility

GEORGE TOWN: Teleflex Inc, a US medical device group headquartered in Philadelphia, plans to turn its manufacturing and research and development (R&D) facility in Taiping into a hub for its next generation of medical devices.

Group chairman and chief executive officer Jeffrey Black told StarBiz that more R&D activities were being transferred to the Taiping plant for the development of medical devices for airways management, urology, infection prevention and anaesthesia.

He was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Teleflex and Universiti Malaysia Perlis.

“This year, we will increase the R&D spending to about 4% of the medical device revenue. Malaysia will get a significant portion of the spending as it is one of the four locations that are involved in R&D work for the group. The other R&D sites were in Germany, the Czech Republic, and the United States,” Black said.
Jeffrey Black ... ‘This year, we will increase the spending for R&D to about 4% of the medical device revenue.’

In 2009, Teleflex generated US$1.9bil in revenue. Of that amount, the medical device division contributed about US$1.5bil while the remainder was from the aerospace and marine businesses.

Black said a distribution centre would be established in Singapore in 2011 to serve the Asia-Pacific market.

On the MoU with Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Black said Teleflex would serve as consultant to the university on its R&D projects on new polymer materials that could be used in making medical device products.

Teleflex has 28 manufacturing facilities located worldwide. In the past two years, Teleflex completed four acquisitions with a total value of more than US$2bil and three divestitures worth about US$1bil.

The Bukit Larut’s Cable Car Project, which has come under heavy fire from many quarters who are sceptical over its feasibility, is to go ahead.
The Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah, said at the opening of the Perak State Assembly in Ipoh on March 30 that it would be developed by private sector at the cost of RM60 million.

“When ready, it will be a new attraction to Taiping, which is already rich with various tourism products,” said Raja Nazrin.

The state government, he said, would impose tight restrictions and requirements to ensure that the environment is not affected by the project.
His assurance is to appease of the fears by NGOs of the environmental impact the cable car project would have on the hill resort.

Presently, the only transport up the 1,250 metres above sea-level hill resort is by land rover service available at the foot of the hill. It leaves every hour from 7am to 6pm.

It is a 30-minute drive up the steep hairpin bends of the narrow winding road built shortly after World War II and completed in 1948.
On a clear day at the summit, it is possible to view the sweeping coastline stretching from Pangkor Island to Penang.

Taiping Cable Car links up with Austrian firm

TAIPING Cable Car Sdn Bhd has signed an initial pact with Austria's Doppelmayr to explore the potential of cable car projects in Malaysian cities.

The cable car service is environmentally-friendly and it also helps to reduce traffic congestion. Countries like Algeria, Venezuela and Portugal are among those that have cable cars in cities.

Doppelmayr manufactures chairlifts, cable cars, gondolas, surface tows for ski and amusement parks as well as urban people movers and material handling systems. The group has produced over 13,700 installations in 78 countries.

Locally, the group has also built the RM50 million cable car service in Langkawi.

"We are keen to work with Doppelmayr which is among the world's key players in cable car service. The partnership will allow our company to tap Dopplemayr's technical expertise once we have identified the area to provide cable car service," said executive chairman Datuk Seri Talaat Husain in Kuala Lumpur.

Talaat did not reveal more on the company's plans but hopes that the project will take off in 2012.

The memorandum of understanding between both companies was signed yesterday in conjunction with the visit of Austrian President Dr Heinz Fischer.

In his opening address at the Malaysia-Austria Economic Forum yesterday, Fischer said Austria is keen to explore business opportunities in areas like environmental technology and renewable energy.

Executives from some 45 Austrian companies headed by vice president of the Federal Economic Chamber Dr Christoph Matznetter joined the president's three-day visit.

They represented various sectors such as machinery, tourism, information and technology, healthcare and pharmaceutical.

Historic clock tower doubles as info centre
By FOONG THIM LENG
north@thestar.com.my

VISITORS are not only going to the Taiping Tourist Information Centre located at the town’s old clock tower built in 1881 for advice but also to take photographs of the historic building.

The Taiping Clock Tower building, which was once known as the Fort, was used as the town police station as well as the fire brigade between 1908 and 1950.

The information centre has undergone renovations and was reopened on April 3 after closing for more than a year.

Taiping Tourist Association member Leong Kum Weng, who supervises the centre, said the building was repainted and the interior was now decorated with old photographs of the town.

“We received about 500 visitors including some from Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Italy and New Zealand who wanted to know the places of attractions, food venues and where to stay in town.

“College students have also approached us for information in carrying out research,” said Leong.

He said the centre would also be working closely with tour agencies, hotels and eating outlets to promote Taiping to visitors.

“We are to promote and stimulate local tours of Taiping’s 33 buildings and sites which were the first of its kind in the country when established.

“These include the Lake Gardens which served as an ornamental park since 1884, the post office built in 1881, Balai Penghulu built in 1875, the Perak Museum built in 1886 and the Taiping Zoo,” he said.

Leong added that not many people know that the zoo provides a special 30% discount for its entrance fee to Taiping residents.

The information centre at Jalan Kota opens daily from 10am to 6.30pm except Monday.

Tourists who wish to ride around the town can rent bicycles at the centre.

Call 05-8053245 for more information.

Glovemakers RM170mil expansion plan
By DAVID TAN
davidtan@thestar.com.my

GEORGE TOWN: Two major rubber gloves producers in the country are investing about RM170mil this year to expand their production capacity, as declining latex price is expected to boost the performance of the glove market in the second half of 2011.

Latexx Partners Bhd and Top Glove Corp Bhd are each investing about RM70mil and RM100mil respectively to expand their maximum production capacities.

Top Glove chairman Tan Sri Lim Chee Wai told StarBiz that for the second half of 2011, the glove market was expected to perform better as the latex price declined.

He said in the past three weeks, latex price had already dropped by 12% and the company believed it would go down further with improved supply from major rubber producing countries.

“In addition, demand for rubber from China, the world's largest consumer of rubber, has declined to a six-week low in recent weeks, further easing the pressure on latex price.

“We should also see a pick-up in demand for rubber gloves as buyers who had remained on the sidelines earlier this year, will be more encouraged to stock up given the lower price,” Lim said.

Latex price presently hovers around RM9.50 per kg.

On the possible rise in the selling price, , Lim said now that the rubber price was coming down, the group might look at revising the price of rubber gloves downwards.

Latexx Partners will undertake the final phase of its expansion exercise this year to gradually raise its annual production capacity to 12 billion pieces in two years from the present 9 billion pieces.

Latexx Partners chairman and chief executive officer Low Bok Tek said its expansion exercise to be completed in two years would add another facility to the existing six plants in Kamunting Industrial Estate, Taiping.

“We will be looking to expand our market share in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America, as we want these regions to generate about 50% of our revenue this year, compared with about 30% previously.

“The US market is still our largest single market, which will contribute 50% to the group's revenue this year,” he said.

A recent Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd report said Malaysian rubber glove export could reach RM8.2bil or US$1.33bil this year, supported by a strong single-digit growth in global demand and liberalisation of the healthcare industry in major emerging markets, such as China and India.

Top Glove's allocation of about RM100mil is to construct three plants, add production lines for its existing 17 factories, and purchase land for future expansion.

Toyo Tire to invest RM1.2bil in Perak

IPOH: Japanese tyre maker Toyo Tire & Rubber Co Ltd, which has taken over Taiping-based Silverstone Bhd, aims to increase its annual production to 15 million units in the next five years, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said yesterday.

He said Toyo Tire, which has acquired 100% equity in Silverstone, would invest RM1.2bil to expand its operations in Asia.

“Two weeks back, I was at Toyo Tire's headquarters in Osaka, Japan, to meet its president and chief executive officer Kenji Nakakura.

“And he had informed (me) about the company's plans to expand its operations in Perak with an investment of US$400mil (RM1.2bil),” Mustapa said following a meeting of Nakakura and Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir here yesterday.

Mustapa said Toyo Tire's investment would include its plans to increase production capacity at the Taiping factory as well as for the construction of a new factory on 20ha in another area that had been identified. - Bernama

Tranquil Taiping
By HELEN ONG

Soak in the serenity of Taiping which still retains much of its old-world charm.

THERE’S something about this heritage town – at once bustling and yet laid-back, that really appeals to me.

Maybe it’s because, as one of the oldest towns in Malaysia, it still retains much of its old-world charms. Maybe it’s to do with the fact that both my parents were born here, and I associate many happy childhood memories with it.

Whatever it is, I love the place. Not only does it have different activities to keep the whole family occupied – from golf (the world-class Taiping Golf Resort is located just off the motorway) to heritage buildings, night safari and more– it also has some of the best food around.

Of course everyone knows it was called “T’ai Ping”, Very Peaceful Town, by the British Administration in the aftermath of the bloody Larut Wars fought between the various Chinese mining factions. It is no wonder that the first purpose-built prison was built here in 1879.

Taiping can lay claim to many Malaysian “firsts”. The Municipal Council proudly lists an amazing 33 events or places which date back to as early as 1844, including the museum, zoo, and the hill station, Maxwell Hills (now Bukit Larut), built in 1870.

Relaxing setting: The Taiping Lake is a great place for a family picnic.
The first English school and English girls’ school (Treacher) were also built here in 1878 and 1889 respectively, and the first Malay school, in 1894. Three newspapers were first published here – Malay, English and Tamil.

To transport tin to Port Weld (Kuala Sepetang) to Penang, the first railway also ran from here.

Of course no article about Taiping would be complete without mention of its famous Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik), another first, converted from old disused tin mines in 1880. There is nothing more reminiscent of childhood for me than to drive under the graceful boughs of the ancient angsanas (raintrees) which line the peaceful road circling it.

As Taiping lies in the lee of the Larut Hills, it is the wettest region in Peninsular Malaysia, getting almost twice the average rainfall as other places.

Storm clouds gather around the hills practically every afternoon to pelt out some quite heavy rains which can last up to an hour or more, cooling down the humid afternoon and evening.

Despite modernisation, rapid expansion and many new buildings – there is a hypermarket coming up soon – the old town centre, thankfully, remains the same. It was rebuilt in 1880 following the great fire which destroyed practically everything in town, and which gave the administration a chance to design better roads and buildings.

As for food, where does one start? It takes a lot for me to say that anything outside Penang is acceptable, but here I willingly concede that this town has reason to be proud of some great dishes.

Everyone’s heard about Taiping’s popiah and roast pork, but there are other delicious offerings as well.

One breakfast noodle that has become synonymous with Taiping is chee cheong fun. It’s different from Penang’s, and also different from KL’s version which is firmer.

My favourite, which used to be sold from a roadside stall at Cross Street, has now moved to the Taiping Hawker Centre at Tupai Road. Tong Fook Chooi’s great-grandfather started the business by selling his own chee cheong fun door to door almost 60 years ago. He now runs the stall with help from his family. The noodles are made fresh every day, steamed at home and brought by motorbike to the stall at regular intervals so it is hot off the press, so to speak.

Its soft, smooth almost cottony texture, roughly chopped and served with a good dollop of special sauce, chilli sauce, a bit of onion oil and the must-have sprinkling of homemade eu chang (fried onions) over it, all goes down as a real treat. Tong’s chee cheong fun is so popular that they are sold out by 11am every day!

Another popular breakfast noodle is Taiping’s homegrown kai see meen or chicken noodle soup, started by Ah Lan Cheh with her mother in the early 1960s. Coincidentally, their stall is right next to Tong grandfather’s stall at Cross Street.

Ah Lan Cheh’s business became so successful that they opened up their own coffee shop “Kakak” (sister) at Market Road, and have been operating from there ever since.

It’s a simple but very successful recipe – a tasty, clear chicken stock ladled over yellow mee, kuey teow or lou si fun (bee tai bak), topped with eu chang and a good sprinkling of chopped spring onions, served with homemade sambal belacan.

As the soup is not spicy, it’s popular with everyone, and you can see why the place is packed out, with the crowd – comprising different generations of the same family from toddlers, to parents and grandparents – spilling out onto the road.

“Many customers grew up eating our kai see meen, and even though they have left Taiping, they come back with their children for it,” said Teng Aun Seng, who helps his sister run the shop.

Teng also developed the “Kakak Special” – Nescafe made with hot barley, which was actually the result of a mistake but turned out to be a delicious, aromatic drink, unique to them. It has become very popular with their clients.

But if you fancy a bit of everything, then go to the Casual Market, a heaving, bustling hawker centre which starts early in the morning and goes on all day till late at night. It’s teeming with people on the prowl for good food, and stalls there sell everything, including one of the best ban chang kueh I’ve ever had – thin, crispy and nutty.

You will find a few stalls here which serve yet another Taiping speciality which I am told is not available anywhere else in Malaysia – the “hoo uwan kuey teow”, the smooth, flat rice noodles, slightly more robust than the soup type, are cooked in dark gravy flavoured with fishballs. It’s really quite unique, and tastes fantastic with chopped chilli padi.

The folks of this town really love their food. At practically every corner, you will find a coffee shop famous for one thing or another, from the aromatic Hainanese Chicken Rice with its special chilli and ginger sauce at Ayer Kacang or Swiss Hotel, to Prima Coffee Shop with its many stalls.

Many Taiping folks may have left their hometown to make their fortune and their mark on the world, but they will always have a place in their heart for this lovely town of everlasting peace.

Hold on there bro. Quality living with peace of mind is better than crazy traffic jams all day in front of your house.

Taiping is a very nice place to live. There's always a high price to pay for development. Given if Taiping has all the world class infrastructure such as a uptrend mall, fibre optics telecommunications and facilities, I don't mind moving there for quality living.

Did you know that Taiping was supposed to be Perak's administrative capital during the British colonization.

It could have been made the Garden Administrative Capital(Wilayah Persekutuan) of Malaysia for instead of Putrajaya today.

Some notable people from Taiping now Singaporeans:

Dr. Toh Chin Chye - Co-founder and the Chairman of the People's Action Party (PAP) Singapore

Archbishop Emeritus Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean - Roman Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Singapore.

I couldn't agree on that. If you consider Ipoh's population - close to 800k, it's among the top 5 in Malaysia higher than even Penang, KK, Kuantan and even Kuching.

But we only have very little development while development projects are always concentrated in other cities/towns due to demographic and political motives.

I remember Taiping was supposed to get a Jusco Shopping Mall earlier but it went to Manjung instead.

Why little is done to accelerate development in Ipoh by the Perak Government is because most of the MPs holding positions are from Manjung District/Sitiawan/Lumut today. They need to secure their own seats for the next upcoming election while they neglect both Ipoh and Taiping.

Also if you compare Ipoh vs KK, our shopping centres are no match for 1Borneo and Suria Sabah. Ipoh spending power low? We've like 800k population vs KK 400k+.

KEuro unit gets nod to build RM7b Banting-Taiping highway

PETALING JAYA: Kumpulan Europlus Bhd’s (KEuro) 64.2%-owned subsidiary West Coast Expressway Sdn Bhd (WCE) has obtained the Government’s nod to build a 316km highway between Banting, Selangor and Taiping, Perak at an estimated cost of RM7.07bil.

KEuro told Bursa Malaysia in a filing that it had received an approval letter from the Public Private Partnership Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department for the project, which comes with a 60-year concession.

A major portion, or 224km, of the highway will be tolled, while 92km will be toll-free. The project will be operated on a build-operate-transfer model.

To enhance the viability of the project, KEuro said the Government would extend to it a support loan of RM2.24bil, commencing in 2013 at an interest rate of 4% a year, and an interest subsidy of up to 3% from commercial loans for a period of 22 years.

The terms of the loan and interest subsidy would be finalised by WCE with the Finance Ministry, the company said.

KEuro said toll revenue in excess of an agreed traffic volume would be shared on a 70:30 basis between the Government and WCE until the full settlement of the loan, after which the ratio would be adjusted to 30:70.

The company said the land acquisition cost of up to RM980mil would be borne by the Government, while construction works would be implemented by WCE through open tender.

18 storey condo in taiping??? wahhh

Taman Aun Say residents worry over effects of new hillslope project
By RASLAN BAHAROM
metroperak@thestar.com.my

RESIDENTS of Taman Aun Say in Taiping are worried over their safety after water began cascading over a concrete wall located at the foot of a hill there recently.

“Whenever it rains heavily, water will start coming down from the hill via a small concrete drain before overflowing to our area,” said a resident.
On site: Ho (second left) speaking with one of the Taman Aun Say residents.

The resident who wished to be identified only as Kwan said the residents were not against development, but it should not be carried out at the expense of the safety and well-being of existing residents.

She was referring to an on-going housing scheme nearby which includes the construction of an 18-storey condominium.

Kwan fears that the concrete wall will eventually give way and send tonnes of mud down into her area.

The house nearest to the wall, occupied by an elderly woman, is separated by a tarred lane, measuring less than 10m wide.
Danger: Overflowing water from the concrete wall was photographed by Kwan on the eve of Chinese New Year.

Kwan said this when Pokok Assam Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Ho Cheng Wang visited the affected site recently upon receiving the complaints of residents.

Kwan said the first time she saw water cascading over the concrete wall was on the eve of the recent Chinese New Year.

“About 4.30pm the day before the Chinese New Year, there was a heavy but brief rainfall. Later I noticed water overflowing from the concrete wall,” she said, adding that the same situation now occurs whenever it rains.

Kampung Tupai village chief Ahmad Kassim said excess water brought down from the hill often flooded Jalan Sultan Idris and Jalan Merdeka located further down the hill.

Ahmad said the hill, called Bukit Speedy was originally the site of a stone quarry but had ceased operating about 10 years ago.
Clogged: Ahmad showing a damaged monsoon drain which is supposed to direct excess water from the hill.

Due to flash floods, which he believes originate from Bukit Speedy, which is located near the new development project, Ahmad inquired with the Taiping Municipal Council whether the much-publicised ban on hillslope development was still in force.

“I was told by a council officer that the Public Works Department (PWD) did not object to the project,” he said.

Council president Shahrom Abd Malek confirmed that the project was approved.

Shahrom said the council had sought the opinion of not only PWD but also other departments such as the Geological Department.

“Once the drains in the area are widened, the problem will be solved,” he said, adding that an environmental impact assessment (EIA) had also been carried out.
Point of contention: The face of the hill where the new project is located has been cleared.

“The project was approved by the council early last year after an EIA,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ho who was accompanied by an engineer from the project said about 50 houses in the area were affected by the spillover.

“Although the land where the excess water originated from does not belong to the developer of the new project, its engineers have been told to provide proper monsoon drains,” said Ho.

“It is clear that the area has been cleared of its vegetation, thus we have excess water coming down here,” added Ho.

Ho was also informed by the affected residents that stone blasting had also resumed on the hill and some small stones had been blown into

Green light given after review by SEB in KL

By ROSHIDI ABU SAMAH

THE residents of Taman Aun Say need not worry as long as the developer of the new project abides by the conditions set by the Slope Engineering Branch (SEB) of PWD in Kuala Lumpur, said Perak PWD director Datuk Dr Safry Kamal Ahmad.

He said the project was approved by the Taiping Municipal Council after taking into account the reviews given by the SEB.

“As far as the SEB is concerned, approval was given on condition that the developer follows all the slope development guidelines put forward by the branch,” he said.

However, Safry Kamal said, should the developer fail to follow the guidelines, it is for the council to take the necessary actions against them.

He said the SEB could only give comments on applications for hillslope developments, with the final say for approval coming from the council.

According to Safry Kamal, the application for the said development was referred directly by the council to the SEB.

“I was informed that the application was made without going through the state PWD,” he added.
