View Full Version : Ideas for the existing Supreme Court site

The new Supreme/District Court building will be ready next year. That means that the existing building which comprises an entire city block on the river, will be up for re-development.

What do people want? Retain as a public asset and build a piece of great infrastructure, or sell to a developer to build two mother fucker 80 story towers?

Ideas?

I honestly think it will be awhile before we see anything on the development front. They will probably just move another government department in there until they figure out what to do with it.

Long term I think its best use is as commercial office space, if this is owned and occupied by the government or sold to a private developer is upto what the government believes is in its best interests. But with them fairly well committed to moving departments out of the CBD my money is on selling it to a private developer.

I think this site would be ideal for an inner city entertainment complex that could link with the cultural precinct over the river.

Perhaps a new theatre holding 2500 people, a playhouse holding 800, a series of smaller performing spaces - all housed in a state of the art complex.

QPAC seems to be at full capacity for most of the year, and the arts scene in Brisbane has evolved massively in the last 15-20 years.

There is certainly demand for such a complex.

naturally i think the govt would want to retain the site, however they might see it as a quick cash grab and offload it

Supreme/District staff won't be moving into the new building until late 2011. I doubt the old Court Houses will be vacated until early 2012. That's more than two years for the property market to turn around (and expectations for something special on the block to grow).

I'm hoping someone can be inspired to merge a landmark building with more public space - space that connects City Hall with the river.

Random Ambition: Part of me wishes they would sink Adelaide St to tunnel under George. Traffic flow would improve for most commuters, but more importantly, the city would become more pedestrian friendly - especially with wide pedestrian access across Adelaide either side of George.... I new way of handling buses in Adelaide could be wrapped into the redevelopment of the LCC site and lowering of the road... (another bus station wouldn't hurt, would it?)...

Longer term, it needs to be easier for commuters to traverse Albert and George Streets from Roma St through to the Gardens/QUT.

Relocate the entertainment centre from the boonies to here and build a tall landmark tower on top!!!!! Minimum 15,000 seat arena. i think the idea of the entertainment centre where it is is so 80s thinking. it reminds me of most american stadiums where they are located on the city fringes and have massive car parks for every seat holder. then redevelop the boondal site into a sustainable residential estate (utlising the vegetation, lakes and railway station)

This is exactly what I was thinking! Within the next decade, I'm sure there will be louder and louder calls for the BEC to be moved - it's in such a shit location.

Either that, or I really like the idea of a new theatre complex to compliment QPAC.

Definately no tower on the site hopefully.

The trouble with a new theatre is that someone has to want to do it, and that someone has to have the means.

I just can't see that happening in Brisbane.

Govt. broke at moment.

Not really. It's in deficit, which as a % of GSP is completely manageable.

I doubt that the site could have both a 15000 seat arena and a cutural element as the concert sounds could conflict.

But hey, who knows?

Retain as a public asset.

Hold it for 10 years. Just leave it as it is, or make a park out of it.

Only a moron would sell it over the next 3-5 years, but then again this is the QLD govt we are talking about.

Honestly, this is a public asset, they need to get maximum return on it, so wait till the height of the next megaboom, which is quite frankly isn't even on the cards atm.

That's not negative, I'm saying why flog off a public asset for what is bound to be a poor price, it's not like there aren't a tonne of other sites in the city that would be 80 storey developers can't acquire.

Ultimately I'd like it to be a park or something that opens up that part of the city to the river.

I agree - it wouldn't be smart to sell it at the moment. Nothing wrong with saying that.

I do not, however, want it to be a park. BEC relocation is most certainly the best idea. That joint is a disgrace to this city!

Theres enough big spaces of SFA in the City already.

Lets have something interesting and new like a re-located BEC.

This is going to come across bluntly, but NO WAY should this site be turned into a PARK...Brisbane CBD and the inner city already has enough parklands and public spaces; Reddacliff Place, King George Square, Queen Street Mall, ANZAC Square, Post Office Square, King Edward Park, Wickham Park, City Botanic Gardens, Roma Street Parklands, Southbank Parklands, Kurilpa Park, the new park at Kangaroo Point and the potential greening of the Howard Smith Wharves.

It is not like Brisbane has this huge CBD that people will struggle to get across, and thus we don't have a limited number of parks/public spaces...

The area could support (as others have said) a theatre/museum/art gallery type set up. I would like to see some sort of a 'theatre district' established in Brisbane, and maybe this is a good spot to get the ball rolling. We could have a couple of small theatres on the site, and maybe down the track the Dendy could be restored to some sort of dignified operation and be an independent/alternate theatre. Brisbane does have a growing arts scene and the city itself lacks theatres (only real sort of theatres are in Fortitude Valley/New Farm and South Bank apart from QUT).

On top of this, it would be good to see a proper indigenous art gallery and/or indigenous museum established to celebrate the culture and history of indigenous people in Queensland. But these might be better off at Howard Smith Wharves.

Hotels, apartments and offices would be built on top of the ground level activities.

A pipedream would be for the Treasury Casino and Hotel to be relocated from their current premises and combined into a purpose built facility at this site. It is big enough to support more restaurants, bars and gaming facilities than it does presently, and the hotel could be much bigger and expansive. The old buildings could be restored and used as (the casino) an elegant shopping centre (ala QVB in Sydney), a museum/art gallery set up or a theatre...

Perhaps more realistic is the creation of a real 'youth driven' precinct with ten pin bowling alley, gaming arcade, flight simulatore, ice skating rink, laser tag, snow park, rock climbing centre, cinema etc etc. Brisbane lacks a popular hang out for teenages and this site's proximity to public transport and large block of land could easily support the above mentioned activites. Offices and apartments/hotel could be built on top

There are certainly many possible uses, let's hope we get a good outcome, eventually

Two stunning designed 300m+ with a skydeck nearly the tops in between as public space and a Gold Coast styled base with shops and cafes.

829m tall building in the shape of the index finger up, facing in the direction of Dubai. Come on, who's with me.

Actually that would never get up because it would be an aviation hazard. I think the site does deserve something "Iconic" which should mean tall and to a very high design standard, with a quality open style base that helps the surrounding area connect with the river frontage. Possibly use the site for construction of the PT bridge across from the Cultural Centre (If this is still desired by the powers of the time), then redevelop it accordingly.

I'm not sure if I heard on the grapevine or on here, but there were talks of relocating the Executive Building staff into new digs, so this site could be an easy opportunity for the Government to do this...as much as I despise the Executive Building, I think this site deserves something more than yet another government building. It's such a ridiculously prime location, the options really are endless, it just comes down to money and willpower.

what was the name of that twin tower project proposed for the Gold Coast transit centre? Something like that would look A.W.E.S.O.M.E here!

Also I wouldn't want a skytower anywhere in Brisbane.

I think they were called E1 and E2?

I think that a 270-300m glass version of the twin towers would be simple and stylish plus the government may consider it if they are moving out of the Executive Building and possibly Mineral House with all the problem that is hanving; or a Walt Disney Concert Hall style building - Frank Gehry is working in Sydney at the moment

Something with a very open and active base would be good (Brisbane Square, 275 George) and then put a nice big tower on top.

How about a series of laneways on the ground level filled with cafes, bars and restaurants.

And on top there could be two twin 300m+ towers...

Then they'd get their damn shade

It will certainly be something special, with the IMF predicting 2.5% (upward) growth in the economy and a prime location is a perfect recipe for a landmark.
