Sports Park Stožice Arena is a new multi-use indoor arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia, that is currently under construction. Once completed in 2010, it will be used mostly for basketball matches and will host the KK Union Olimpija. It will have a capacity of 12,480 spectators. The deadline for completion of the arena is June 30 2010.

The Sports Park Stožice integrates a football stadium and a multi-purpose sports hall with a big shopping centre, covered by the artificial landscape of the recreational park. As a result 182,000sqm Sports Park Stožice becomes one of the major focal points of Ljubljana's urban life, attracting people of different interests and generation both during the daytime and in the evenings.

The football stadium for 16.038 spectators is laid out under the plateau of the park. As a structure, it's therefore 'sunk' into the park. Only the roof over the stands rises above the plane of the park as a monolithic crater.

The sports hall for 12,484 spectators is located in the north-western part of the park. The four levels of concourses and the lower, VIP, and upper stands are covered by a shell-shaped dome. The park's plateau, the edge of the shell scallops and opens towards the interior. The ridges continue all the way to the top, where the facade meets the dome. This outlines the shape of the hall, a shell that opens towards the perimeter with large crescent openings overlooking the park. Along the entire perimeter, there is a canopy encircling the hall, acting as a derivative to the scalloped shell. Like the stadium, the entire shell of the hall is also finished in exterior cladding that changes colour depending on the exterior conditions and viewing distance.

Recent construction works on the Sports Hall include steel supports for the roof and concrete finish of the stands. Mechanical and electrical installations are also in full swing.

In short. Sports park Stožice is situated in northern side of Ljubljana, near the highway. It is a rising complex, including a footbal stadium (16000), indoor sports arena (12480) and the biggest shoping centre under the ground between both stadiums. And yes, this is going to be the biggest football stadium in Slovenia and the biggest indoor sports arena in our country as well.

There are no plans for ice-hockey venues in this arena. After finishing this project, city council of Ljubljana will renovate current Tivoli sports park. Tivoli is composed from two joined halls, one with 6000 seats and another with 4000 seats. After the renovation of Tivoli, the bigger hall will accept 8500 seats and will be designed for ice-hockey only. Smaller hall will accept only 2000 people for smaller sport events.

I like the reasoning behind these arenas. Slovenians don´t really need a big football stadium with cap. 50-60k plus. The football stadium has a modest design capacity could have been maybe 25-30k but fully suitable for domestic football teams.
The indoor arena has a decent capacity but what suprised me is that they didn´t anticipate hosting ice hockey/skating or indoor athletics.

If it's necessary, for example, hosting World ice-hockey Championship, they will play also in this new arena. But otherwise the matches during the year will be played in renovated Tivoli (8500).

Only north side of the third ring left :banana: I love how fast is the construction progressing in -10 degrees celzius and snowy circumstances. Today again fell 10 cm of fresh snow, yestrday 3 cm. Every day I wake up there is a fresh layer of snow on the streets. Thumbs up for the construction workers :cheers:

in that last render the football stadium looks very plain and boring...also kind of cheap...reminds me of old communist architecture where most stadiums were below ground level and then had a crappy roof....but the basketball arena looks great...

I drive to the school I se that sport park and every day there is something more.
Those workers are fantasic, they work even if there is a snow or if it rains.

^^ Kaunas Arena workers works even if there is -20C outside, and/or tons of snow or it is raining and glaze ice is everywhere ;) so Kaunas workers are the best But nice to see progress on Ljubljana's arena which I believe will make a nice addition on Euroleague by Union Olimpija :cheers:

Tivoli will still have two halls.
Bigger one will go from 6500 to 8000 and smaller one will go from 4000 to 2000.
Stožice will have possibility for ice. Similar solution like Arena ZG.
Space is not an issue due to telescopic seats.

Lower part of stadium roof will be coverd with grass and upper part will get another layer which will change coulor with different positions of the sun from yellow-ish to green-ish.
Arena roof will get insulation from inside and flat sheet metal from outside.
It will change coulor also.
So it is not going to look cheap when it's finished ;).

Yea I figured that was some type of installation material. The basketball arena looks great, It would of been awesome if they made the roof of the football pitch with the same type of style as the basketball one... but instead of covering up the skeleton of the roof, just place glass over it..it would of looked insane...

Any more word on whether the Slovenia v Northern Ireland game will be played here on 3 September? The rumour I've heard is that the game will be played in Maribor, because of Slovenia's good home record at that stadium.

They have started to save up with expenses. Thats why they choose the cheapest seats made by Chinese manufacturer. They look ugly and cheap and seats are not the only think where they start to save money. :ohno: You can tell just by looking at those seats, they were made by Chinese.

Anyway I really dont care what seats will they install since they can allways be replaced. In the old Tivoli hall they replaced them at least three times since they build Tivoli 40 years ago. So seats are nothing permanent and there is allways option to replace them. Even the fences in stands can be removed after time, no problem. What is important is that they didnt made any error in design of the arena. Except for the too huge space between upper and lower ring.

Both arenas are nice in their own way... (Hamburg and Ljubljana)

All I can say is WOW! It's spectacular. Beautiful complex in a beautiful country. Most times you see a proposal like that, and think "nah, they'll never build that" And then you check back a couple years later, and poof! There it is.

However the whole structure is really vast. Is it going to be some shopping mall or something like that? It would seem a lot of money being spent without a purpose building a vast concrete structure for two relatively small arenas.

It is not too small for icehockey. Just some rows from telescopic stands (pull out stands) would have to be removed (pulled in). (see graphics above)

Nice project. It's very good that to Arenas is in one place. Nice colors, cos the same colors is Žalgiris Kaunas :D From the pictures I hate those metal strips (don't know how to call them correctly) near woman in that picture. I hope those things won't be installed in Zalgiris Arena in Kaunas (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=719054). The facade is quite unique, but for us Lithuanians, it reminds of this old building in Elektrėnai.

I really like the indoor. It's cosy and have great atmosphere as I see. Great idea of small upper tier so people fill both the lower and upper (if the upper one was bigger then on the lower there would be not enough spectators during events). And also nice colour seating.

I only don't like the roof on stadium and its flat stands.

Great arena, looks massive from inside, when I watched Slovenia - Spain friendly game on TV it looked like it has more than 15k seats. I am really happy that the main Slovenian basketball club "Olimpia" will be hosting their Euroleague home matches in this huge brand new arena, cause I know how noisy and crazy Slovenian basketball fans can be and I hope that due to these changes "Olimpia" basketball club will start showing better results in Euroleague.
