September 12 marks the start of a new Millennium for Ethiopians.
"The significance of the celebration lies in the fact that it is going to be observed not by consuming and wasting the nation's resources but will serve as a springboard to the many challenges the nation faces," Mr Gabriel Marian said.
A procession sponsored by the Ethiopian Embassy and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church saw part of the Ethiopian community participate in awareness campaigns on Tuesday.
Ethiopia uses the Julian calendar that is seven years and eight months behind the Gregorian calendar
Marian, an elder at the Ethiopian Episcopal Church said the New Year event, hoped to promote Ethiopia's image internationally, is to be marked by consumption of Tella, a traditional Ethiopian brew.
"We will welcome the third Millennium with year-long celebrations that include a procession and parade, sporting activities, an exhibition, galas, songs and dances among many others," Marian added.
The New Year celebrations were officially launched in June alongside a tree planting event dubbed 'Two Trees in 2000' project. It aims at planting about 20 million indigenous seedlings.

African Lion September 7th, 2007, 03:01 PM Its actually the year 2,000 and not the 2,000th birthday. We use the different calender and the countrys history actually goes back to 3,000 years. We are trying to get back to the greatness of the past. We the diaspora will do all we can to develop the country despite a dictatorial and enemy government.
Happy new year Africans
To our future
arzaranh September 7th, 2007, 06:27 PM how do you say happy new year in amharic?
Xusein September 7th, 2007, 08:45 PM Happy birthday to Ethiopia. I actually did not know it was that old.
Tarrex September 8th, 2007, 12:23 AM how do you say happy new year in amharic?
Good question. But i will find it out :)
skipperBill September 8th, 2007, 01:39 AM how do you say happy new year in amharic?
from wikipedia:
Enkutatash is the first day of the New Year in Ethiopia. It occurs on Meskerem 1 on the Ethiopian calendar, which is September 11 (or, during a leap year, September 12) according to the Gregorian calendar.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enkutatash
To actually greet someone into the new year...you can use the same term, "Enkutatash". there are also other variations on the phrase "welcome to the new year" in local dialect, but 'enkutatash' is the most popular.
enkutatash to our ethiopian posters from me personally. :)
arzaranh September 8th, 2007, 05:10 PM Enkutatash!
Carver02 September 10th, 2007, 11:58 PM May God bless Africa as we enter the Third Millennium!
By Elizabeth Blunt
BBC News, Addis Ababa
Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa is ready for the new Millennium. Coloured lights are strung from the lamp posts - red, yellow and green like the national flag.
A flock of massive white fibreglass birds has appeared in Meskal Square.
Presumably doves of peace, they have big sharp beaks and a disconcertingly beady gleam in their eyes.
Here in the highlands the rains are almost over and the flowers are starting to bloom.
And there is something special about a starting a new Millennium, especially when your country has this new Millennium all to itself.
But Ethiopians - at least here in Addis Ababa - have mixed feelings about these celebrations.
On the one hand they love Enkutatash, the New Year holiday. It is a time for family reunions, and visiting friends.
A time for girls singing from door-to-door, home-brewed beer and honey wine, and big bowls of spicy chicken stew.
The price of hot pepper - indispensable for a good chicken stew - has rocketed from 20 ($2) to 80 birr, and fallen back again to 40 birr a kilo.
Herds of sheep and goats have converged on the city; some with pink ribbons tied to their horns, the sign, I was told, that they have already been earmarked for someone's New Year's dinner.

lamrof September 11th, 2010, 08:30 AM Nice, I just called home. They are all in a festive mood. Seems the country is in the verge of transformation.
They had a count down like Europeans at midnight. Did not know our calendar has that weird concept of starting a day at midnight. What was up with that?

I am not the best person on the subject, I know the counting begins in the morning, so it would make sense to start the day in the morning. I also remember having to stop eating before mid-night if you were fasting, since after mid-night it is considered the next, so I don't know.

Simfan34 December 31st, 2010, 04:09 AM ^^Thank you, but a bit early for me.
lamrof January 1st, 2011, 06:34 PM I was in a DC Ethiopian club Yesterday for the New year eve. This Ethio chic was showing her trophy whitey BF, she was beaming in pride. So I thought I should give her my piece of mind about it. So I got close to her and told my friend, "Some Abesha chics have the adacity to bring their -shasho- boyfriends in a party like this. I wish I could cut a nose right now" my friend answered "we chewed her and spat her out so let them take her" At this point she turned and screamed obsceneties at me. Her shasho BF turned tomato faced. Apparently there was another Ethio cling-on with them and got on my face too, tried to create a fuss with me and my buddy. We both lift weights and it shows. The mofo saw that and backed out quick.
abesha January 1st, 2011, 06:50 PM I don't understand why you are so racist towards whites lamrof. It's none of your business who she dates. Seriously, this attitude of some abesha men really grates on my nerves. :ohno:
