City pulls ads from bus shelters

http://media.mmgcommunity.topscms.com/images/39/5f/8544aea54b1eaea89ad9332a95d0.jpeg
Off the bus. An advertisement for Virgin Mobile was pulled out from some Mississauga bus shelters by City officials.

Two Canadian cities including Mississauga have pulled a pair of billboard advertisements for Virgin Mobile after receiving complaints.
The ads, featuring a man in a passionate kiss with a woman while touching her buttocks, with a tagline “Hook up fearlessly,” did not sit well with the City officials.
Ed De Grosbois, director of business services for the City of Mississauga, said the city removed the ads because they may be perceived as sexual exploitation of either men or women.
"Many of these campaigns would be quite suitable for a magazine, but putting them into a bus shelter where there's young children I think is the main issue," De Grosbois told The Canadian Press.
Three versions of the ad from the cellphone provider were being displayed at about 50 bus stops around Calgary. It's unclear just how many billboards were exhibited in Mississauga bus shelters.
A spokesperson from Virgin Mobile Canada confirmed that some ads were taken down in Mississauga after some “minor complaints.”
Officials from Canada's national advertising watchdog said they have not had any complaints about the Virgin Mobile ads.
“We never monitor advertising, but we always react to complaints,” said Danielle Lefrancois, spokeswoman for the group. “We would have to consider the nature of the complaint itself.”
Virgin Mobile spokesman Nathan Rosenberg told media the company doesn't see what all the fuss is about.

Honestly, who the hell has enough time to complain about stuff like this? Im with Virgin here... I don't see what all the fuss is about. They should have replaced them with the ones of two men kissing, just to stick it to the people who complained!

It only takes a handful of dickheads to cause a big fuss and get things removed or banned so I'm not surprised.

South Park made fun of this mentality in an episode where they pretty much ended up outlawing anything to do with Christmas if it offended someone.

I'm not sure what the laws are like in Quebec, but in Ontario its perfectly legal for women to be topless, so...I wonder why we don't see any female toplessness in advertising. It would certainly attract a lot of attention (i.e. money) at least. :dunno:

Not really, the first summer the law was passed The Brass Rail (strip club) had it's strippers doing free topless car washes in the back lot as a promotion for the venue. Women choosing to walk around topless is one thing, sudsing up their tatters in front of passersby's to promote lap dances is not really the sort of image the city or province wanted to leave with the average tourist. Also if nothing was done you'd be hearing more and more complaints from women saying they were forced to show off their puppies in public or be fired. I'm all for tasteful tits in ads though.

Whats sexist is that its legal for men to be topless in any situation, but not women - different laws for different genders = sexism.

As for female employees being forced to take their tops off in public for promotional purposes or whatever - that would just not be possible unless it was specified in their contracts...basic labour laws otherwise just don't allow for that kind of blatant extortion ("take off your clothes of you're fired" is sexual abuse, for either gender, unless as already mentioned thats what the job entails).

You don't seem to get it, the law was passed so that women could have the same freedoms as men with their bodies, not to open them up for exploitation. As nice as it would be for the labour laws to protect everybody we all know no system is perfect and some women would be in situations where they would rather not be. As in this is your job, if you don't like it we can find somebody else to do it.

Its quite simple really - employed in a position where having to undress is not part of the job, and the boss tells you take your top or be fired? Sexual harassment.

Have a job as a stripper or some other "clothing free" position and you're told to take your top off or be fired? Well you should probably do that, being that thats part of the job. And if you don't like that, then you probably shouldn't have taken that job in the first place (or at least read the contract).

Its nothing terribly different than what exists at present. And how often does it happen that women are unwillingly forced to walk around in a bra to advertise something? Only in situations where it should be quite obvious - i.e. underwear models.

A mans chest and a womans breast are not the same, have you seen any? They also function in different ways.

And no it's not that simple, people get fired for b-s reasons all the time and get away with it.

Anyway, I'm done with this thread, I'm here for the architecture.

I agree with Andrew about American Apparel ads. They have been heavily criticized in the past about those types of ads that they have insisted on using for years. I also dislike their ads with the women in tights spreading their legs, bending over and shoving their asses into the camera. It isn't playful, or clever, but rather heavily handed attempts to sell with sex.

AA did this? (Points off for unoriginality)

I remember the Calvin Klein ads in the early 90s that did that. Plus the t.v. ads with an off camera voice interviewing the models. It was tasteless, tawdry and personally I loved the ads (they were brilliant and then banned) AND they helped revive the CK brand for awhile.

Yes but you have to put it in context. It was the early/mid 90s. Sex was still a bad word (and could equal death) after the age of AIDS. Stuff like this was seen as liberating. And a kick in the ass to 80s conservatism.

Get the Weed Whacker fired up before a bush fire breaks out.

Only a matter of time before someone screams at me to take it down, though.

Women in the mid 19th century didn't believe in shaving I guess..

ever seen old porn from the 1970s? It seems that people didn't start trimming or shaving until the 80s. I suppose I've been socially conditioned to feel this way, but that much pubic hair on a woman or a man is nothing short of repulsive.

With me it isn't so much the thickness as it is the length. I even have chest hairs that are longer than the hair on my head. I don't know how it gets so long, it just does.

I have this strange hair on my wrist that keeps growing back. It reached two inches once.

I do have hairy chest and legs, but I always trimmed, including that area (not shave)so its doesn't mistaken as Stanley Park. Most Asian do not trim their public hair though(kind of strange to me).
