The Addis Ababa City Administration will today inaugurate the biggest condominium site built in the city in the presence of ministers, high-ranking government officials and Ambassadors, it was learnt.

The site, named Jemo Condominium Site, is a cluster of 10, 064 condominium houses expected to accommodate over 50,000 dwellers, the size of a population that outnumber many towns in the country, according to the city officials.

Unlike the other condominium sites under construction in various parts of the city and its peripheries, the Jemo site project has a sewerage system stretching 29km around the site, with a 9km passage linking the system to the city’s main sewerage line.

The site has a 6.1km asphalt while there are 52 communal facilities which will serve the dwellers for various functions including abattoirs and laundry.

The Jemo site is built in Lideta and Gulelle subcities.

The aerial shots of the event will be taken and transmitted live on the national TV on the day of the inauguration.

The ceremony will be celebrated at the national level.

The city administration is expected to hand over the condominiums within one year of the inauguration.

Addis to Build 20,000 Condos Next Year
The Addis Abeba City Administration will use land recovered from illegal squatters.

The Addis Abeba City Administration is to build a minimum of 20,000 condominium houses next year and has allocated around 870 million Br for housing and infrastructure development.
The city plans to construct the condominium houses on plots of land reserved for redevelopment projects and on additional plots of land to be acquired for this purpose, according to Kuma Demeksa, mayor of the city administration, speaking on the occasion of the city council’s meeting held on Wednesday, July 7, 2010.
Plots of land recovered by the city administration from illegal squatters will also be used for this purpose, according to the mayor. The administration managed to recover around 126ht of land in the 2009/10 fiscal year.
Although the administration prioritises housing projects, increasing the water supply to 85pc and civil service reform are at the top of the agenda. Micro and small enterprises (MSEs), increasing the revenue of the city, land issues, schools, and health institutions will also be given attention, according to Kuma.
To undertake its projects, the Addis Abeba City Council has approved a record annual budget of 9.4 billion Br, out of which 5.8 billion Br (79.2pc) is to be used for developmental purposes.
The city has allocated the largest share (1.19 billion Br) of the budget to land development and city redevelopment projects with road construction coming in second place at 1.17 billion Br.
Housing, and infrastructure, and water supply development will consume 14.7pc and 15.2pc of the budget, respectively. Education and health institutions will be apportioned around two per cent of the total budget each.
The city administration managed to collect 4.6 billion Br in revenue in the 2009/10 budget year, 18pc short of its projection (5.6 billion Br).
To finance its budget, the city plans to collect 5.2 billion Br from tax, 3.8 billion Br from nontax revenues, while five per cent is planned to be collected from foreign aid and loans.
