observation deck in 100m, you have to go 509 steps upstairs
built from 1248-1880

IMO a masterpiece of gothic architecture / 10 pts.

10 points for that masterpiece!

For its architecture (and thats what im voting for) it has to be a 10 of course, but there are still too many quick´n´dirty repairs in the main front and also the surroundings really sucks.
It is the most astonishing building i ever visited, the interior view is just breath-taking!

You're right. What's more, some pieces (ornaments or whatever the correct architectural term is) are actually missing. It needs a good cleaning and some additional restauration. Too bad it's so big, when they're done they can start all over again.

soweit ich weiß, ist es sandstein.
man muss sich vorstellen, dass der dom eigentlich ganz hell sein sollte, nur leider ist der sandstein so anfällig für dreck/schmutz/ruß.

i like it, although some of the modern additions are really ugly - 9,5/10. there is no perfection.

If you ever happen to visit Cologne, you'll notice almost bright white statues...that's what the parts of the Cathedral looked like when they were first built. They're also rebuilding a small part which was destroyed during WW2, pretty interesting to see what the building looked like centuries ago.

Eine Fassadenreinigung würde dem Teil echt gut tun, so dass es in "altem" glanz erstrahlen könnte.
Sandsteinbauten haben ihr Flair, bspw. das aus rotem Sandstein bestehende Basler Münster, siehe Link

There is a new square since this summer and of course they are cleaning the facade all the time. It will just take many years

...btw There's a Legend that says that once when the Cathedral will be finished the Apocalypse is near. Well before the 1st world war the catherdral was finished and we all know what happened.

As perfect as a cathedral can get. It is massive and yet fragile with all those tiny ornaments and carvings and decorations. A true masterpiece.

I've seen this cathedral in person and its staggaring. It beggars belief that someone only gave it a 5.

Koln Cathedral is an architectural event. A monument to mankinds dream to reach the skies. I love tall churches; this, Ulm, Salisbury and St Olafs are all jaw-droppingly tall. I wish Lincoln Cathedral's triple spires still existed as well.

When will the cleaning programme be finished?

As far as I know it was never really finished. Once the Cathedral had been consecrated, they more or less started work on various parts and it obviously continues to this day. We already know that no living person will ever see the cathedral w/o scaffolding.

10 for the building, but they should really do something about the surrounding. The old square was plain ugly and the new one looks pretty mediocre at best. Unfortunately, this type of development is quiet typical for many German cities.

This Cathedral remains the biggest Gothic structure in the world! When it was finnaly finished in 1880 after more than 600 years of construction it was even the World's tallest structure!

Matthieu
March 20th, 2006, 11:03 AM
I'm sending this one to the industrial era because of the extensive use of steel in its construction, not only in the spires that are only a decorative feature but also in the ceiling and to sustain most of the structure.
