Sadly, we have lonely stadiums in the world, that for whatever reason, have no friends to play in it.

This is thread is for stadiums and arenas that are still standing, but have no permanent tenants. And preferably not ones that just became empty a year ago when a team moved to a new place, I mean, a place that's REALLY been empty.

---

One of the saddest cases has to be Homestead Baseball Stadium - if that's really its name. Built in Homestead, FL, it was supposed to be a spring training or minor league stadium. But just after construction wrapped in 1992, Hurricane Andrew tore through South Florida, heavily damaging the stadium. The team lined up to play there in the coming years left for another deal.

The stadium was rebuilt, but has remained empty for 15 years, rotting. Absolutely empty. The occasional game, but home to no teams or clubs. It's been used more as a filming location for movies and TV shows.

Memphis Pyramid has been empty for awhile hasn't it? I know Master Grizzly doesn't like when people use/used it. They have a contact that means the Mid-South Coliseum can't be used on the same day as FedEx, anyway.

They really need to do something with that Homestead stadium. Maybe move Miami FC in and play soccer there or something. It's a sin to waste a stadium that nice.

I'll just give a link rather than post pictures, http://mysite.verizon.net/charliesballparks/stadiums/hinchlif.htm

That's Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey. It's gone to hell.

White City Tennis Club

Was the home of Australian tennis for many years and used to host many Davis Cups and 17 Australian Opens however when sydney won the right to host the Olympics a new tennis centre was built at Olympic Park, it was then sold to John Alexander who had issues with permission for redevelopment and with members who wanted to use the club so as a result it has been sitting vacant for 3 years now.

It's in a sports complex in Homestead, near the NASCAR track, which is basically the southernmost area before the Keys.

There's rumors that the Marlins might move Spring Training there once their new stadium is done, but the problem now is that there aren't any other teams in the Miami metro. Everyone's either moving up the coast or to Arizona.

FC Wageningen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Wageningen) went bust in 1992.
Stadion de Wageningse Berg has been empty ever since.

Apparently the municipality uses people sentenced to community service to do some basic maintenance. There are some vague plans to convert it for use as a health centre.

The Ottawa Baseball stadium is much like the Homestead stadium in that it's fairly new and tenantless. Here is the full history courtesy of Wikipedia

The stadium was built to house the Ottawa Lynx of the International League and opened prior to the 1993 season. In its first season, the Lynx sold out 43 games and set an International League attendance record by averaging 9,772 fans per game. However, annual attendance steadily declined from there, except for a modest increase in 2001. By 2006, Ottawa had the lowest average attendance in the league.[2] The Lynx relocated after the 2007 season.

After the departure of the Lynx, the City of Ottawa considered other proposals for the site but kept the stadium as a baseball facility for the following season. A new team, the Ottawa Rapidz of the Can-Am League, was established in December 2007 and began to play in 2008. Despite attracting higher attendance than the Lynx, the Rapidz declared bankruptcy on 29 September 2009.[3] A new team, the Voyageurs, was announced by the Can-Am league for the 2009 season. However, the league was faced with a lack of prospective owners for the team and with declining economic conditions and disbanded the Voyageurs in March 2009.[4]

The stadium remained unused in 2009 except for a late-August series of community baseball games sponsored by Ottawa city councillor Bob Monette.[5] Earlier, following the demise of the Voyageurs, Monette had suggested that the stadium be dismantled and the land sold to generate funds which could be applied to a new sports venue.

This stadium sums up the state of baseball interest in Canada in recent times. The Expos left Montreal and numerous minor league teams across Canada have gone bust or relocated. Blue Jays attendance in Toronto is nowhere near what it once was. Canada is producing more good players than ever before but fan interest has been going in the opposite direction.

Why buy when it's cheaper to have a county/city pay you (and build you a new facility free of charge) to come and play for discounted rent.
Second Homestead lost its value even more when spring training was shut down in Miami an Ft. Lauderdale leaving Homestead isolated. It looks strange to say that but according to Mlb it is not economically viable because of transportation costs.

Hmm, true true.

It's actully quite disgusting that counties/states pay for private companies to have stadiums.
Sure, it brings revenue and all, but the idea is still repulsing.

this stadium in Ludwigshafen, RP, Germany, is currently also not in use. former 4th league team FSV Lugwigshafen-Oggersheim played there 2 years ago, but they went bankrupt. The capacity is 41,383.
In 1952, this stadium was packed with 83,000 spectators, when the final of the german championship was played there. This stadium has not seen any professional football since 1989, that was the last year that Waldhof Mannheim played Bundesliga there.

Cities are usually eager to build you a brand new facility if you sign a contract to remain in the city for a given period. Then, team owners can demand the city to make improvement or they threat to move. Moving franchises is something that can cost political careers if people feel that a mayor or a council were against their loved teams.

I only hoped that soccer clubs here in Europe had greater mobility so we would have far more luxurious venues in place, because cities would be at risk of losing their soccer teams. Imagine Barcelona moving to Zaragoza, for instance.

Since most of new crop of Canadian baseball players seem to hail from BC, I suppose the sport has gained popularity there.

Although aside from that, the professional game is indeed in shambles. In the 90's, there used to be about 10 professional teams I believe (Toronto, Montreal + 8 Triple-A/Double-A/Single-A teams). However, with the relatively recent demise of Baltimore's AAA affiliate in Ottawa, there is a grand total of 1 baseball team in Canada (Toronto) ... and that team too is just coming off one of its worst seasons ever in terms of average attendance.

Yes "affiliated" minor league baseball is almost dead (except the Short-Season A, Northwest League, Vancouver Canadians) but what about these teams?

Calgary (Alberta) Vipers (founded 2004, Independent, North American League) www.calgaryvipers.com
Edmonton (Alberta) Capitals (founded 2005, Independent, North American League) www.capsbaseball.ca
Québec (Québec) Capitales (founded 1999, Independent, Can-Am Association) www.capitalesdequebec.com
Winnipeg (Manitoba) Goldeyes (founded 1994, Independent, American Association) www.goldeyes.com
Can-Am Association has tried/is trying to resurrect baseball in Ottawa, ON and Trois-Rivières, QC

Pro baseball is not what it once was in Canada. You can thank affiliated baseball for that. However, these indy teams are somewhat successful which proves fan interest is still there (especially outside of BC and Ontario).

The Perth Entertainment Centre. Abandoned since 2002 when the owners (Channel 7) closed it because of lack of profitibily and failing to sell it to the State Government of Western Australia.
http://www.james.rcpt.to/perth/images/entertainment-center.jpg
Opened in 1974, it was a multiuse arena used mostly for concerts and events though it did host tennis early on and Basketball. It seated 8200 for Basketball and was the home of the Perth Wildcats of Australia's National Basketball League from 1990 to 2002. It was a popular venue in spite of it being rather plain or down right ugly on the outside mostly because of its central CBD location but it was comfortable inside. The Wildcats would play infront of full houses even when the popularity of the NBL began to fall in other cities.
http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/federation/images/photos_large/001001d.jpg
The interior design was of a horseshoe single tier with and arena floor roughly 30m/30m and one end was a proper and perminent stage. It was the first of this kind of arena in Australia, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide would build their own "Entertainment Centres" in the 80's and early 90's. Melbourne was served by the Glasshouse (1956 olympic pool converted to arena like the Wembley Arena) and later Rod Laver Arena. Interior pics are hard to find but it has a similar shape and look to single teir arenas in the USA like Nassau Coliseum or the Philly Spectrum if one was to cut it in half.

I have to agree !!!

And that's why (among others) they left the stadium.....The Vauban Fortress is a "Monument Historique" : French protected heritage ....

That stadium will be demolished this year.... or next year :?.

Gosh, if this was in the CFL, it would be one of the top 5 stadiums.

Lille, Stade Grimonprez Jooris (former cap. 21,128 including standing areas)

It's abandoned since 2004, Lille OSC plays now at the Stadium-Nord pending the opening of their new 50K stadium.

Great picture of Maple Leaf Gardens.

There was a renovation proposed for Bush Stadium which would've seen a soccer team move in (strange considering Kuntz Stadium -- yea, I know -- the old PanAmerican Games soccer stadium is just across the road). Not sure what came of that plan. It became a dirt race track for a short time as well, but that venture when bust.

"1st May" Stadium, in Scornicesti, Romania.
Scornicesti was the home town of communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu. He wanted to make a "model-town" out of Scornicesti, which was actually more like a village, with a population of aprox. 10.000. So he built new flats, tearing down the old houses along the main road, and he also built a large stadium(for a small town), with a seating capacity of 30.000. It was one of the most modern stadiums in the country, at that time. He also created a team, recruiting some of the best Romanian players of that moment, some of them having to play there, against their own will. Of course, after the fall of his regime, in '89, the team was dissolved, and the stadium abandoned. The main stand is home now for a few homeless people.

I've noticed that in this thread many of the old stadiums that have been demolished in the US are missing. So I'll post photos of the Polo Grounds in New York City.

I shall refer to the 4th stadium built in Harlem know as the Polo Grounds.

Behold ..the Polo Grounds(in it's final configuration) on the upper northern reaches of Manhattan in Harlem..155th street to be exact.

http://i51.tinypic.com/14o3tsp.jpg

Tenants: New York Giants (NL 1911-57);
New York Yankees (AL 1913-22);
New York football Giants (NFL 1925-55);
New York Mets (NL 1962-63);
New York Titans/Jets (AFL 1960-63);
New York Cubans (Negro American/National
Leagues 1940-48)

The link below offers the best information about the Polo Grounds.

(New) Cathkin Park (also known as Hampden park from 1884-1903), Glasgow.

The former home of Queens Park FC (from 1884-1903) and Third Lanark FC (1903-1967, when the club went bust), The ground is now owned by Glasgow City Council, who operate it as a public park.

Third Lanark have recent reformed as a junior side, and play there home games here. The ground also has a claim to fame, having hosted the first ever all-ticket football match, a game between Scotland and England in 1884.

In it's heyday (capacity ~50,000):

A picture of Hampden Park (the current one), with Cathkin Park visible at the top of the picture:

Some time in-between then and now:

http://www.nothingtoseehere.net/images/cathkin-park-pitch.jpg
http://www.freewebs.com/tims92/Third%20Lanark/Cathkin%20Park%204.jpg

Aeriel picture from google maps. Hampden Park (as it is now) is obviously the big ground at the bottom, with the field to the left (behind the East stand, or Rangers end) being lesser Hampden. Cathkin Park is located to the north, and marked by the yellow pin. If you head North West from here (almost directly following the line of the pitch) to the other side of the road and railway lines, you can also see Hampden Bowling club. This was the site of the original Hampden Park (although there is nothing there now to suggest that).
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m207/ITFCJez/football/non-Town/ThirdLanarkHampden.jpg

Although I have never actually visited the ground (I walk past it regularly mind, on the way to Hampden), I am told it is a strange experience - apart from the stands being removed, the council have deliberatly tried to leave the ground as it was.

I miss that place. Used to go there for games when I lived in the west end of Ottawa. Nothing beat spending less then 20$ for a ticket, beer and snacks and catching a game, and having no traffic to and from. Too bad the combination of the strike and Ottawa being lukewarm for any sport that isn't hockey was a 1-2 punch, because it's a good park.
However, these indy teams are somewhat successful which proves fan interest is still there (especially outside of BC and Ontario).

Indeed. If it doesnt' have a tie-in to the ******* that are the MLB, it seems to work. I know they've got a five team league out in the maritimes as well that is doing wellish (they just put an expansion team in Charlottetown this year). Maybe that's what is really needed. It's not like we'll ever see another pro expansion team come to Canada again.

As for the post about the Gardens (Maple Leaf), I'd bet money they could put another NHL team in Toronto, give them that gardens, and it'd be packed every game. A waste of an awesome landmark and a piece of hockey history. At least they did something with the Forum.

And speaking of abandoned stadiums and Montreal, how could this be missed?

Cities are usually eager to build you a brand new facility if you sign a contract to remain in the city for a given period. Then, team owners can demand the city to make improvement or they threat to move. Moving franchises is something that can cost political careers if people feel that a mayor or a council were against their loved teams.

I only hoped that soccer clubs here in Europe had greater mobility so we would have far more luxurious venues in place, because cities would be at risk of losing their soccer teams. Imagine Barcelona moving to Zaragoza, for instance.

You want to see football teams abandoming their fans and trying to extort public money?

I heard they're thinking of restoring the full bowl to bring capacity up to about 76,000-80,000. That place is great when it's full and Montreal seems to have little trouble filling it for big events like the Grey Cup.

I'm pretty certain, though not absolutely, that the ground has an ordinance that prevents it from being used for any other reason than a sporting one by the council who actually own it, hence why it hasn't already been turned into swanky new flats. Scarborough Athletic were formed out of the ruins of Scarborough FC and currently play at "home" in Bridlington, but effectively if they were to get some success and rise up the leagues, Scarborough council could lease it back to them. It would be an immense amount of work to bring it up to standard of course.

Not to mention the University of Miami, the Orange Bowl and the BCS Championship on occasion. Sun Life Stadium is no where near abandoned. The franchise that plays baseball might as well be abandoned, but the city/county is helping them build a brand new stadium as we speak.

Perhaps those three should have been temporary as well.

The Beach Volleyball Centre should have definitely been temporary for sure, the other venues such as that for Baseball and Field Hockey, could have been downsized post Olympics to serve the national teams as training venues.

Bernie Robbins Stadium, Atlantic City, N.J. (5,500)

Originally known as "The Sandcastle", the stadium was built in 1998. The former tenants, the Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am baseball Association, folded for the 2009 season because of the collapse of the proposed sale of the team and the lack of ownership to continue for the 2009 season.

Bernie Robbins Stadium has played host to the Atlantic League All-Star Game in 1998 and 2005 as well as to various amateur baseball events and concerts. In October 2006, it was the venue for Atlantic regional qualifying for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

In May 2008, WCAU-TV sports director and former NFL player Vai Sikahema accepted an open challenge from former MLB player Jose Canseco to fight him in a celebrity boxing match for $5,000. Canseco claims to have earned black belts in Kung Fu, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai, while Sikahema, who grew up wanting to be a professional boxer, had once fought in a National Golden Gloves Championship that was eventually won by Sugar Ray Leonard. The fight (dubbed the War At The Shore) took place on July 12, 2008, and was hosted by Philadelphia-native adult film personality Steven Sheaffer. Sikahema won by knockout in the first round.

An August 2009 report in the Press of Atlantic City reported on the stadium's deteriorating condition due to lack of maintenance and vandalism.

Perhaps those three should have been temporary as well.

The Beach Volleyball Centre should have definitely been temporary for sure, the other venues such as that for Baseball and Field Hockey, could have been downsized post Olympics to serve the national teams as training venues.

The Beach volleyball venue was used a few years ago for a FIVB event and for the Euro Beach handball championships and there are plans to convert it to an outdoor theatre, but right now it is just sitting there. The baseball stadium is used for a football team in the second division. It's the softball stadium that I was talking about. The softball and field hockey ones are tough, because neither sport is popular in Greece, but the women's softball team is actually really good and finished 2nd in the Euro Championships a few years ago and 6th out of 8th in Athens 2004 and they almost qualified for Beijing, but softball and baseball are still not popular in Greece as the national teams are mostly Greek-Americans and Greek-Canadians.

But yeah, they are abandoned :ohno:

Feethams may have been decrepit but at least it was a reasonable size for Darlington. Their current stadium has 24,500 seat but the average attendance is only 2,000-3,000. I've never seen a match in Darlington but I imagine that it feels very empty

Feethams has been knocked down few years ago. They are trying to built homes on the land now. but with the low house prices its going to take some time. The new stadium is always haft empty it is weird watching the team play :ohno:

It was a private venue, owned by resort developers. The stadium was supposed to be the centerpiece of a new resort, but the idea never took off. The city was able to procure some of the outlying practice fields and turned them into a park. Here's the wiki link:

One of the saddest cases has to be Homestead Baseball Stadium - if that's really its name. Built in Homestead, FL, it was supposed to be a spring training or minor league stadium. But just after construction wrapped in 1992, Hurricane Andrew tore through South Florida, heavily damaging the stadium. The team lined up to play there in the coming years left for another deal.

The stadium was rebuilt, but has remained empty for 15 years, rotting. Absolutely empty. The occasional game, but home to no teams or clubs. It's been used more as a filming location for movies and TV shows.

http://www.digitalballparks.com/Florida/Homestead_-_Exterior_Close_V2T.jpg

Being unused and locked up, pictures are very, very rare. Gorgeous looking place, at least in the exterior.

Abandoned no more:

La Ley Enterprises has just invested about $1 million in oft-dormant Homestead Sports Complex to ready it for a Mixed Fighting Alliance match in early May and a June-to-August international youth baseball tournament. La Ley has "pretty much redone all the seating, all the suites, painted the entire outside of the" baseball stadium, said President John H. Ruiz. "We have redone entirely all of the fields that were out in the back as well as the field in the main stadium. We've taken down the scoreboard and are bringing in a jumbo LED screen. We've redone the sound system, the dugouts, the locker rooms, all the interior offices." La Ley has also replaced broken lighting, built a baseball diamond for children 7 to 13 and retrofitted the complex so it can transmit games in high definition. Finally, Mr. Ruiz said, "we're in the works of starting to build an [outdoor] Olympic-sized swimming pool and we're also looking into building a water park." At the outset of negotiations, Mr. Ruiz, an attorney, said he planned to redo much of complex and add up to 20 indoor basketball courts, all to breathe life into the city and pump $60 million to $80 million into its economy. In return, he would pay the complex's upkeep costs, now $300,000 a year, and have the option to buy the whole ballgame for $16 million. The complex's official opening under La Ley is to be June 17, when baseball teams for youths 8 to 18 from across the US as well as Japan, Taiwan, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and even Cuba will jet to Miami to compete until Aug. 12. The crack of bats at the complex may elicit a collective sigh of relief from the surrounding area.

Everyone thinks all the Athens Olympic venues are abandoned, but they are all in use except for the ones that were just temportary stadiums and these three:

Helliniko Softball Stadium (8,000)

Helliniko Hockey Stadium (8,000 for main stadium and 2,000 for the second stadium)

Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre (10,000)
http://image18.webshots.com/18/6/94/77/202669477wvTeWX_fs.jpg
*Basically it was just the foreign countries trying to make us look bad...They even were bitching about SEF and the OAKA Indoor Hall and how they were abandoned, meanwhile they were both built way before the Olympics in 2004 and they are used all the time...

Its a shame though. A whole bunch of Athenian football clubs are looking for a new stadiums, and instead of going together with the clubs and plan together how to make softball stadiums, hockey stadiums, etc. they just went ahead and built some stadiums witch is now abandoned. But in the case of the hockey field, I still find it strange that no clubs has shown interest to overtake it. Even for the national team it would be a good fit in my opinion.

As for the beach volley arena, yes its has some events now and then, but I'm still disappointed of the sparse activity. For instance, this weekend Athens hosted the beach football championship, and instead of using the beach volley arena, they set up a venue in Rafina.

Last time I was there (I was involved in the NSW Premier League) was a few years back and the northern end of the main grandstand was condemned and the dressing rooms were literally falling apart.

It served it's purpose but once it lost its regular tenant then it was never going to be renovated.

For those that don't know the stadium is literally on the Sydney Airport flight path (east-west runway I think), so much so the guide lights actually are built into the creek adjacent to the stadium.

Used as a training site and for the clubs younsters for the last two years, the old Tivoli in Aachen (opened June 3rd 1928, it's a very well known traditional stadium here in Germany, which has allways only been built and used for soccer) is now completely abandoned and will very soon be completely demolished and make way for houses and shops.
(The trees on the site have allready all been chopped at the end of winter for ecological reasons, to prevent birds and other animals from nesting there that would loose their homes when the trees were chopped in spring or summertime).

Here are some pictures and a google translation (at least the basic info is halfwhat understandable in english) of a pretty good article on it:

Darlington FC have left the Arena to play a season or two in Shildon, Country Durham then try to move back to the town in a new ground with 2,500 seats and that should be able to help the team survive without going into administration for a fourth time in 10 years.

New-ish, and well it determines what you consider "good". If comparing it to a dilapidated and run down, cramped and ancient ground then yeah it's an improvement, in near enough every other aspect it's perfectly average. First of all it was built far too large for the tenants...now there's ambition and then there's foolishness. Darlo were always a respectable lower league side in the North East, fighting against the likes of Middlesboro, Newcastle and Sunderland for support but were gaining respectable attendances at their old ground for their league position at the time. Instead of moving to say a more realistic 14'000 seater, or similar, no the former Chairman (who himself is a bit of a character) goes for double that. The expected rise up the leagues didn't occur, and the throngs of local support didn't suddenly materialise. You have not experienced a complete lack of atmosphere until you've experienced 3000 people in a 28'000 all-seater stadium. On top of that it's not really "good" so to speak. I found the rows were unbearably narrow, with your knees constantly hitting the seat in front. Now I am 6 foot which may explain it, but I've not experienced that with other new bowls.

As for it's future, well the organisation which now owns Darlington FC have moved in to groundshare with local non-league neighbours in a stadium that is much more suited to their size. As for the stadium, who knows what will happen to it, one thing for certain is Darlington FC will not be moving back. I suspect it will attempt to host a few concerts or similar...but then eventually torn down to be replaced with new housing.

Try sitting in the Arena with 800 fans ! for a pre-season game with a scottish premier league team. The Arena was and is a great stadium but it was built by the former safebreaker tax dodging crook george reynolds who had no clue about the game and just wanted a big new stadium to show off with. yeah the rows were a bit to narrow sat next to a guy who was 6,4 and he had loads of problems with the seats (which I liked seeing him in plain LOL)

yeah their is talk about using the white elephine has a concerts venue but with the NIMBY'S of neaham road area never wanting the stadium to be built.

I have heard about the Newcastle Falcons moving down to Darlington became south durham has more rugby fans than newcastle. But that is still up in the air at the minute but with newcastle's new shirt not having the words newcastle on the shirt and a big bright red band on the shirt seems to look of fitted to the arena but at the minute its all still up in the air at the minute But Darlington FC have moved out of the hell hole of a stadium.

-People still going on about how the Arena was still the best place for us! I've copied and pasted Toris post that may get lost amongst posts so thought I'd repost the costing of the Arena. The facts do really make your jaw drop!!!

Utility costs
Rent/Rates/refuse £51,000
Electric/Gas £50,400
Water/Insurance £63,000
Total £164,400

Stadium maintenance costs
Wages/Materials £26,200
Safety/Security expenses. £4,565
Machinery & Pitch Main. £45,600
Stewarding/Matchday
Safety £24,000
Total £100,365

In addition Significant Stadium Maintenance Costs:
• Steel – non galvanised steel used with 10yr guarantee life (rust) - to paint;
• Roof bolts – many thousands & all need tightening to comply with the law;
• PA, CCTV and emergency power systems no preventive maint. for several years;
• Water treatment and frost protection throughout the stadium i.e. all stands.

This breakdown is based on historic fact and as you can see, it was not a viable option to remain at the arena. You will also realise why we couldn't agree on a match day lease as the costs that would have been met by S & S would have been too great.

yeah their is talk about using the white elephine has a concerts venue but with the NIMBY'S of neaham road area never wanting the stadium to be built.

• Steel – non galvanised steel used with 10yr guarantee life (rust) - to paint;
• Roof bolts – many thousands & all need tightening to comply with the law;
• PA, CCTV and emergency power systems no preventive maint. for several years;
• Water treatment and frost protection throughout the stadium i.e. all stands.

This breakdown is based on historic fact and as you can see, it was not a viable option to remain at the arena. You will also realise why we couldn't agree on a match day lease as the costs that would have been met by S & S would have been too great.

Thats from the Darlington Fans website.I don't think you can call it a great stadium, it's nothing more then the generic flat-pack bowl stadium. Yes it's capacity was way over what Darlington could ever hope to achieve, even a 10k seater stadium would have been too much. I don't think it will be a concert venue because it will be competing with the Metro radio arena (which is managed by SMG Europe, not much better then them out there for concert management), Sunderland's stadium of light, and to a lesser extent the 02 Academy and City Hall in Newcastle. Also I'm sure the Falcons have recently signed a deal with Northumbria University about their tenancy at Kingston Park and are hoping to create new Rugby ties with the University as well.

It wil eventually be knocked down for a supermarket and housing, it may take a few years for it to rust away in order for the council and the locals to back down and allow it but that is what will become of it.

Is this per year? per month?

Per year.

Think a new 10,000 seater stadium would of worked. But we all know the bigger acts want the SOL and the other venue's in the north east would bring in more money. Houses won't be built on it because of the local and its to near a gypsy site. Think a supermarket won't work it would cost to much money to buy the stadium and knock it down to then built a store on it. plus the council want 70% of the profits if it is sold for non-sporting use.

But the City of San Francisco does not exactly have a good track record for this sort of thing. It took several false starts before AT&T Park happened, and the Niners finally gave up, and are building down here. The reason that the Warriors are in Oakland is San Francisco has been trying to build a new arena for almost 50 years without success. I'm not optimistic about this. The grandstands in Oakland were leveled and rebuilt in 1996, so it's not like the place is outdated.

Was a permanent move to San Jose never an option for the Warriors?
Sadly, no. (I say sadly because I lived about 10 minutes from the arena at the time, and saw about 12 games that year. It was great. I was ready to ship out the Sharks to Oakland so the Warriors could stay.) It was a one year lease, and the Warriors had already signed for 20 years at the rebuilt Coliseum Arena (what everybody actually calls the place) before they even started work. And the new lease in Oakland also called for five two-year extensions.

The real kicker here is the Warriors are paying $7.4 million per year in debt service for the rebuilding of the arena, which would total $222 million. If the team ever chooses to leave after the original 20 years (2017), or after any of the extensions, the current owner of the team would be on the hook for all of the remainder of the $222 million still owed.

So if the Warriors try to jump ship in 2017, they would have to make an immediate cash payment of $74 million to the City of Oakland. That amount would drop by $14.8 million after every two year extension.

Yeah we left the 25,000 earlier this year and will be playing a few seasons in near by Bishop Aucklands 1,000 ground. We would of lost tens of thousands of pounds paying rent for a stadium we had built for use by a former owner who built the stadium for his own ego. We hoping to got another ground for the team which is more fitting for the club has a whole.

No one knows the owners Scott & Sizer have not really said what they are going to do with a 25,000 seater stadium with no team to play in it. They move try and turn it into a concert venue but with Sunderlands "stadium of light" just up the run its going to be hard for anyone to use the arena with a great stadium venue already up and running up a few miles away

Found this on detroiturbex.com (http://detroiturbex.com) (images and information thanks to detroiturbex.com (http://detroiturbex.com)):

Kimball Arena, Port Huron, Michigan

Even in a large metropolitan area, the plan would have been considered a long shot: the construction of a $220 million dollar complex including a 10,000 seat hockey arena, additional ice rinks, restaurants, a hotel, and shopping. And yet in 1999, work began on just such a project in the Michigan city of Port Huron, population: 32,000.
The idea was that the arena would be home to Port Huron's minor league hockey team, the Border Cats. The teams owner - Mostafa Afr – had a good track record of taking financially distressed arena properties and turning them around, and hoped the project would draw residents and people from the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, construction was halted only a year after it began when financing for the project dried up. While considerable structural work had been completed on the building housing the additional ice rinks, the arena itself was just a foundation pit with a few concrete uprights, which soon filled with water.
By 2002 the building had been heavily damaged by vandals, and though a new developer for the property would appear every few years, their plans – finish the arena, build a casino, turn it into a convention center – never materialized.
Today the project site has been exposed to the elements for over 10 years. It is far past the salvageable stage, and most discussion about the property focuses on tearing down rather than building up.
In the end though, one city's loss was another city's gain. A construction firm used the plans and building materials created but never used for the Port Huron arena to build the Windsor Family Credit Union Center starting in 2006. The completed project bears a strong resemblance to the skeletal remains rotting outside of Port Huron.

8 years later, Athens Olympic venues in decay
Eight years after the Athens Games, many of the venues remain abandoned or rarely used, focusing public anger on past governments as the country struggles through a fifth year of recession and a debt crisis that has seen a surge in poverty and unemployment. (AP Photo/Thanassis Stavrakis)

There's still one group that loves the training pool for athletes at the former Olympic village in Athens' northern fringe.

Frogs.

They appear to delight in sitting on debris that floats on the half-filled pool's murky waters.

The athletes village itself has fared somewhat better, turned into housing for workers.

Eight years after the 2004 Athens Games, many of the Olympic venues Greece built at great expense remain abandoned or rarely used. They are the focus of great public anger as the country struggles through a fifth year of recession and nearly three years of a debt crisis that has seen a surge in poverty and unemployment.

At the southern Athens venue for softball — a sport unknown in Greece and already out of the Summer Olympics — the occasional weed is all that remains on the dried-out field.

With no shortage of real beaches in Greece, the purpose-built beach volleyball stadium has seen minimal use in the past eight years, mostly just concerts.

Other Athens venues have fared better. The badminton hall has been converted into a popular theater venue, the former international Olympic broadcast center is a shopping mall and what was the main press center now houses ministry offices.

The old baseball venue has been used for the past two years by a fourth-division local soccer club — although some of the stands could do with a lick of paint.

The hockey venue hosted the Special Olympics last year, but material used in that event still lies abandoned around the rim.

The taekwondo and handball arena is occasionally used for non-sports events.

The main Athens Olympics complex is now mostly open to the public and its sporting venues are used by local teams or to host national championships.

Greek politicians, meanwhile, are still struggling to deal with those years of excess spending, and many economists still question the country's future in the 17-nation common euro currency.

For which venue of Athens exactly do you feel sad? Maybe for the Beach volley one, but, hold on, it will be soon a major attraction in a seaside park designed by Renzo Piano. All the rest venues are already in use.

Salgueiros SC was once known as the 3rd best club in Porto, Portugal, behind Boavista and FC Porto.
They had a simple 11000 capacity stadium built in the 1930's, called Vidal Pinheiro Stadium.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7tsmgYAv2ao/StyvCFMDPtI/AAAAAAAAZuk/wkrjNn0oStY/s1600/2000%2B(1).jpg

They then decided to build a new stadium not too far away, near a park named Arca d'Água. The location was great (near a highway and a park) and the terrain was donated by Porto City Hall to the club in 1997. The total capacity was to be of 12.000. In the meantime, the old stadium was demolished.

http://loveporto.com/salgueiros/3.JPG

http://loveporto.com/salgueiros/12.JPG

http://loveporto.com/salgueiros/7.JPG

However, somehow they failed to realize that Arca d'Agua park had a natural lake and when construction started, water started sprouting from the ground. They had made foundation works on top of the water table and even though they spent over a year trying to remove it, it just kept coming and the construction was abandoned.

The club eventually suffered consecutive relegations and folded in 2006. The terrain was sold off to a phantom real estate agency and that's it. Now it's just a massive lake, filled with vegetation. At first, kids would swim and old people would fish, but with time, it just got so full of plants that it had to be fenced and now, nothing happens and there are no plans to refurbish it. The locals now call it Salgueiros Lake.

As for the old stadium, after it was demolished, a part of it was bought by the Porto Metro company and made an underground station next to the field, where some sheds stood for some years. The other part is owned by a real estate company who want to build a residential block, but is in legal problems with City Hall.

All that remains there now is a synthetic pitch, used for training by the newco team, Salgueiros 08, and a stand of the old stadium, marked with a graffiti that says "Modern Football was here."

Fascinating Photos of Abandoned Olympic Sites Around the World

by Claire Cottrell. Posted on 3:30 pm Monday Aug 13, 2012

The Storefront for Art & Architecture, our favorite Little Italy-adjacent nonprofit organization, has organized a photo exhibition exploring the post-Olympic city. Answering the question, what happens to a city after the Olympics are gone, the show features The Olympic City project, an ongoing collaboration between photographer Jon Pack and indie filmmaker Gary Hustwit of Helvetica design docu fame.

As the show’s catalog states, “some former Olympic sites are retrofitted and used in ways that belie their grand beginnings; turned into prisons, housing, malls, gyms, churches. Others sit unused for decades and become tragic time capsules.” We’re as horrified as we are fascinated by the fact that billions of dollars are spent every two years only to see such a sad — sometimes bizarre — fate. From abandoned Olympic villages to crumbling public art commissions, click through to check out the very best of Olympic ruin porn. Then let us know in the comments what you think about such a temporary extravagance. Should cities re-think the Olympics? Will London’s flashy stadiums look like this one day?

Those were destroyed during the war (1992-1995) as many other facilities, like Zetra Olympic Hall (main hall) - it was renovated in 1997 I think with huge help from late Mr Juan Antonio Samaranch, whom it is called after.
There are many projects to renovate those facilities above, but my country does not have money, any money I would say, and we have awesome geographical and natural conditions to have great success in winter sports.

P.S. If there was not that damn war in 1990's, these facilities would have been used non-stop and Sarajevo would have been Ski world cup host on yearly basis, as like as bob and sleigh competitions. :(

Yes, almost everything was destroyed... there was a tribute to Sarajevo at winter Olympics in Lillehammer... only Olympic hall was renovated and I would say, based on pics, it looks better than now, but everything else is still untouched... good news is that next season some official skiing competitions will be held in Sarajevo so there are some moves forward.

The people that own the bit next to the station want to build a residencial building, like the ones in the background, but they can't get permits from City Hall. I assume if you wanted to build something else in that bit, you'd face the same problems.

It was the home of Rushden & Diamonds F.C., but they went out of business. Kettering Town then played there, however, they've now moved out due to the costs of running Nene Park.

Northwich Victoria's former ground:

In 2006 the club moved to play at The Victoria Stadium in Wincham. The stadium was opened by Sir Alex Ferguson. The stadium saw some success, before in January 2012 chairman Jim Rushe failed to purchase the ground. Chemical manufacturer Thor Specialities Ltd, who neighbour the ground bought the premises and subsequently evicted the football club.

The Victoria Stadium now lies redundant and unused, whilst the club groundshare with Stafford Rangers at Marston Road, Stafford.

I just asked if Djurgardens played their European games at this stadium.

If not, than = UEFA has nothing to do with Djurgardens move from this historical venue.

And as for my stadium.:lol:

I don't even mention it as I get embarrassed when someone mention it. :ohno:

And, before mentioned organization - UEFA - should ban Dinamo from playing there, that would maybe do something to force City to build new one.

The Eighth Wonder of the World sits abondoned, empty and decaying not far from the new Reliant Stadium.

There was a plan to renovate the Astrodome when Houston was bidding for the 2012 Olympic games about a decade ago. Then there were plans to turn it into a hotel which went nowhere.

Harris County is still paying off the 1987 renovations demanded by Houston Oilers owner Bud Adams.

The Astrodome served as the home for the Houston Astros, Houston Oilers, Houston Cougar college football team and the Houston Rodeo for nearly 35 years. The first indoor baseball and football games were played there. Artificial turf was introduced there.

The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan & Elvis Presley played there, among many others. In 1968, the Game of the Century (#2 Houston vs. #1 UCLA) in college basketball was played there as well as the 1971 Final Four. The Battle of the Sexes (Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King) was played there. Muhammed Ali fought there 4 times, including the famous Ernie Terrell "What's my name?" bout. Evil Kneivel jumped there. It was the site for the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl game. The 1968 and 1986 Major League All-Star games were played there.

It was home to Hall of Famers like Nolan Ryan and Earl Campbell. And Heisman winner Andre Ware.

It was a pitcher's park in baseball with a huge outfield. In football, it sat 50,000 until 1987 when the famous scoreboard was removed and 10,000 seats were added. It was considered such a home field advantage for the University of Houston when it joined the Southwest Conference in 1971 that the University of Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas demanded that their first SWC road football games at UH (played in 1976-77) would be held at Rice Stadium.

The Astrodome was owned by Harris County, and was a multi-purpose facility. Both of these things conspired against it. The owners of the Astros and Oilers eventually wanted to:

1. Own their own stadiums (i.e., not have to pay rent, make additional money from parking, concessions, suite sales, renting out for concerts, etc.), and

2. Have a stadium dedicated to their sport.

Bud Adams tried to get a downtown stadium built for the Oilers, but his ultimate remedy was to move the team to Nasheville.

The end result is that Houston ended up building Minute Maid Park (formerly Enron Field) in downtown Houston for the Astros in 2000, and Reliant Stadium for the new Houston Texans franchise in 2002. The Rodeo now uses Reliant as its main venue.

The University of Houston moved back to campus in 1999 (to Robertson Stadium), and has recently demolished that stadium to build a brand new campus football stadium. (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=97113639&postcount=79)

According to article in Wikipedia:

RCD Mallorca left the stadium in 1999 when ONO Estadi (Son Moix) opened, but the reserve team RCD Mallorca B continued to use the stadium until 2007, before they to moved on to Son Bibiloni, the club's training complex to the north of Palma.
