Friends,
Please list out if any more big projects are either in pipeline or construction, so that I can update the first post regularly and all the news regarding IT/BPO/Software from Coimbatore can be posted in this dedicated thread so that the main Coimbatore thread can be kept for other project updates.
Fusionist January 16th, 2010, 05:52 PM good idea Arul, it would be even better if you benckmark a thread for Construction Projects Update, not just IT projects for Kovai. The present Kovai thread is full of so many information it is hard to get a cler picture of the construction projects and building photos.
satishanu January 16th, 2010, 05:59 PM Arul, Nice thread!. I cannot see the pics of Elcot and KCT.
kg4129 January 17th, 2010, 01:22 AM Good Thread :)
Can we change heading as " கோவை- தகவல் தொழில் நுட்பம் " in tamil instread of "கோவை -IT" ?
Arul, Can you start another thread as "ELCOT promoted IT Parks -Tier II cities (Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Thirunelveli & Hosur)".
Already construction activities started in Madurai & Trichy..
Chennai_m January 17th, 2010, 02:42 AM yes agreed. it might even make sense to start a seperate kovai subforum (like the one for chennai). and yea we can also do an ELCOT thread in the Tamil Nadu forum.

Very big projects will have separate threads in coming days. After seeing the ground breaking progress surely we will get lot of updates. Rakindoo Kovai pudur project is another mega one in CBE, we will start the thread once we get enough pictures on construction.
Arul Murugan January 17th, 2010, 11:33 AM Arul, Nice thread!. I cannot see the pics of Elcot and KCT.
I hope now you can see the pictures.

Thanks KG, I have informed mods regarding title editing. We will wait for some more months for opening new topic on ELCOT IT parks.
karthikarthik January 17th, 2010, 05:00 PM Nice to see new thread...
It will be nice if mods can group threads like,
Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Coimbatore IT, Coimbatore-salem industrial corridor as new sub forum like western tamilnadu

satishanu January 29th, 2010, 09:26 PM IT services major Cognizant is well on course to make Coimbatore a key constituent in its success story. It is on a major recruiting drive from engineering colleges in and around the city and has already filled up half the seats in its newly opened techno-campus inside a private IT-SEZ here.
Described as one of the largest CTS facilities in a tier-II city, the techno-campus built at a cost of Rs 180 crore has seven floors with a capacity to employ 6000 professionals.
The company also has plans to expand the facility and the second phase is expected to add 6500 seats. "We are aggressively increasing our strength at the new facility. In the last few months, we have added hundreds of people and at present, we have 3500 employees ," Cognizant VP and centre head, Coimbatore Vishnu Potty told ET.
"It is a big facility and one of the fastest growing delivery centres in the country. So we want to hire people as quickly as possible," he said, adding the training academy with 20 class rooms inside the new campus is buzzing with activity now.
On the reported delay in sending call letters to last year’s campus placed students, Mr Potty said all of them would come on board by March 2010. CTS has started its next round of campus recruitments and so far around 1900 students have been picked up from selected engineering colleges in and around the city. It is said colleges in this region contribute to 10% of the company’s annual campus hiring.
"We have selected students mainly from Amrita College of Engineering (550), PSG College of Technology (400), Kumaraguru College of Technology
(300), Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (150) and Kongu Engineering College (150)," he said.
Further, he said, the company is selecting students from all engineering streams and not restricting to the core
circuit branches like computing, electronic, electrical and instrumentation.
"We were looking for diversified profiles and recruited people from offbeat verticals like polymer technology, leather technology and textile engineering," he said. He added, such candidates will understand life sciences better and can be very helpful in developing software related to those fields.
The region has around 118 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, Coimbatore. On the employability of students, GRD College director KK Ramachandran told ET that there is a huge chunk of students available here, but nearly 50% of them lack communication and language skills.
On campus placements, he said they have turned slightly better from December 2009. "Until November, there was no recovery signs from industry, but now, it is vibrant and picking up. We get lot of enquiries from MNCs like JP Morgan Chase and C H Robinson. Visits by IT companies like TCS and HCL are also in the pipeline," he said.

ChennaiIndian January 30th, 2010, 05:47 AM Mods - I am not sure if this has been posted; if yes, then you can remove this.

There is more to Coimbatore than just being the ‘Manchester of South India' with its burgeoning textile and engineering industries. This third largest city in Tamil Nadu and home to the Formula 3 circuit has, over the years, emerged as one of the top destinations for the IT-BPO industry.
In fact, according to a recent study by Cyber Media's Global Services and investment advisory firm Tholons, Coimbatore has been ranked in the 17th position in the list of the top 50 Emerging Global Outsourcing cities. Industry associations have been making concerted efforts to turn this industrial hub into another Silicon Valley. The Coimbatore zone of the CII has been, for nearly a decade now, promoting this industrial hub as an ‘ideal IT destination' for engineering process outsourcing (EPO), among others. The region has carved a niche for itself in engineering, auto components and machine tools space.
Industry experts say the locational advantage that the city enjoys, its proximity to Chennai and Bangalore, the huge talent pool and its entrepreneurial culture differentiates Coimbatore from other destinations. A number of companies across the gamut of outsourcing (from EPO to legal and medical transcription) have started their operations to capitalise on the rich pool of talent and resources readily available here.
Statistics reveal that there are over 27 engineering colleges, 70+ arts and science colleges and 18 polytechnics in and around here, making it an ideal recruitment destination as well. Retention of talent pool has been a strong point for most of the players establishing a presence here.
IT major Cognizant, for instance, was one of the first major players to start a development centre here and has since expanded rapidly. Its Vice-President and Head, Vishnu Potty, admits to Coimbatore being a strong sourcing base for its operations across India. Cognizant's Coimbatore centre focuses on financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and retail, media and entertainment. The city is set to emerge as the ‘Medical Transcription Outsourcing Capital of India', say leaders in the medical transcription space.
Players such as CBay Systems and Spheris have expanded their operations here rapidly. CBay, for instance, has its largest facility here in an area of about 20,000 sq.ft. The company has, in the last eight months, opened up two centres, initiated tie-ups with local colleges to rope in students. A few others are exploring opportunities across the landscape as this (medical transcription) industry is predominantly South-based.
Being the chosen hub for MT, the city also has a number of people travelling from smaller towns such as Salem, Erode, Pollachi and Udhagamandalam attracted towards this steadily growing industry.
“The availability of quality manpower, large talent pool of almost 28,000 non-graduate engineers passing out every year from the 260-odd institutions has made Coimbatore an attractive destination for us,” says Suresh Nair, CEO and Managing Director, Spheris.
Industry leaders believe that with requisite training, the prospective candidates could be groomed to become world class medical transcriptionists to cater to the $200-billion healthcare outsourcing business world-wide.

Tamil Nadu has become a model state for others in the Information Technology
sector as it brought in an IT policy way back in 1997, enabling software exports to touch Rs 36,680 crore in 2008-09, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said here on Friday.
Addressing about 10,000 students from across the state, participating in an 'animation' (computer drawing) contest, through video conferencing from Chennai, he said software exports, which were about Rs 14,400 crore in 2005-06, had reached a record due to the impetus given by the Government to the IT sector.
After Tidel Park was set up in Chennai, the government has initiated steps to set up such parks in Tier II cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Salem and Hosur, he said, adding that the Coimbatore Park would become functional shortly.
The Chief Minister said the government wanted the younger generation to become experts and hence decided to conduct the 'animation' test through Internet Conference for the students, as part of the World Tamil Classical Conference scheduled at Coimbatore from June 23.

Expert says IT sector will continue to thrive
‘The $ 64 billion target in 2010 will increase to $ 225 billion in 2020’
http://www.hindu.com/2010/02/13/images/2010021352410501.jpg
MOTIVATING STUDENTS: S. Lakshminarayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions, speaking at the conference on Intelligent Computing organised by the Coimbatore Chapter of the Computer Society of India at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore on Friday.
COIMBATORE: “The long-term sustainability of the IT sector has been clearly established and has proved that it will continue to thrive. National Association of Software and Services’ Companies (NASSCOM) has predicted that the $ 64 billion target in 2010 will increase to $ 225 billion in 2020. Hence, the strength and vitality of the industry is there for everyone to participate,” S. Lakshminarayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions, said here on Friday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the national conference on Intelligent Computing organised by the Coimbatore Chapter of the Computer Society of India (CSI) and CSI Division III at the PSG College of Technology, he called for application of technology in solving societal problems.
Quoting the examples of IBM’s efforts in solving the traffic congestion problem in London and the Unique ID project of the Indian Government, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said such efforts went to prove that the power of computing and the human creative mind could come together for problem solving at the macro level.
Speaking about the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu, he said it aimed at providing training and other development inputs to nearly 5,000 faculty who in turn would train the college students. This would address the issue of lack of collaboration between the industry and academia, he added.
P. Thrimurthy, President-elect, CSI, said the Society had created a knowledge portal that was on a trial run. Sponsored by the Tata Consultancy Services, the portal was expected to attract more student members to the Society.
The portal would be formally inaugurated by the Minister of State for Communications and IT, Sachin Pilot, on February 16.
“CSI is looking at bringing in more students into its fold. At present, there are 387 student branches and 66 chapters in the country. But, the membership is only about 50 per cent. The portal is expected to change this.
The Society is also looking at developing teachers as managers and vice-versa. This is going to be the slogan of the Society,” Mr. Thrimurthy said.
S. Ramanathan, Regional Vice-President, VII CSI, and former office-bearers of the Society, spoke.

Sampathkumar February 28th, 2010, 01:45 AM

Focus on core strengths of Coimbatore: Collector
http://www.hindu.com/2010/02/28/images/2010022854130501.jpg
New initiative: Collector P. Umanath (left) launching ‘CoimbatoreITforum.com’ website at a function in Coimbatore on Saturday. General Manager of Robert BOSCH Engineering Pvt. Ltd, Coimbatore, R. Venugopal (second left) and Chairman of Rathinam Group Madan A. Sendhil (right) are in the picture. —
COIMBATORE: Any brand building initiative for Coimbatore should be focused on the core strengths of the city, Collector P. Umanath said here on Saturday.
Launching CoimbatoreITforum.com, an initiative to brand Information Technology and IT Enabled Services in Coimbatore, he said that apart from developing physical infrastructure, such efforts would help build the image of the city. Pune and Coimbatore were remarkably similar.
Yet, Pune had the advantage of proximity to a larger city – Mumbai. “On the other hand, we do not have a bigger cousin,” he said.
Rather than trying to build what the city lacked, the inherent strengths here such as manpower, affordability, weather and peaceful environment should be highlighted. “We have a unique combination and we need to build on it,” he said.
Factor
Visibility was an important factor that helped an outsider decide to move to Coimbatore. Though Chennai was a tier-one city, it had not changed culturally.
In five years, companies would start seeing more merit in moving to Coimbatore rather than Bangalore as business and costs find their own course, he said.
General Manager of Robert Bosch Engineering, Coimbatore, R. Venugopal said the company felt the need for such an initiative two years ago when it started operations here. It was difficult to convince people to move to Coimbatore. Though the company was well-known, Coimbatore was not.
Hence, it was decided that some of the important people in the company would move over to Coimbatore and for every 100 people added, 90 were added to the facility here. “If we want to attract people to Coimbatore we should promote a multi-cultural environment.”
The website was a people’s initiative. It would have blogs and platforms for exchange of information so that those who wanted to come and work here would feel comfortable.
Madan A. Sendhil, Chairman of Rathinam Group, said Coimbatore and Pune had almost the same number of educational institutions and pitched to become IT destinations in 2001. Now, Pune had about 20 IT parks and over 500 IT companies employing nearly 30,000. Coimbatore, however, had just three or four IT parks and about 100 IT companies that employed 7000 people.
Though the two cities had all macro-level similarities, Coimbatore required branding internally and externally.
Some companies, especially the smaller ones, were really finding it difficult to relocate people to Coimbatore as many were unaware of the facilities available here. The forum was formed only to brand Coimbatore.
The website was a front-end of the effort. Though close to a million sq.ft. of IT space was developed here, the basic ingredient was people for IT companies and they should be attracted to come here.
karthikarthik March 18th, 2010, 05:00 AM Any progress in Wipro construction? Is the scheme road issue settled? Wipro is on a mass recruitment mode in Chennai and this is a positive sign. If Tidel is completed soon we can see more IT companies setting shop in CBE.
Brand coimbatore March 18th, 2010, 02:48 PM Things are not pretty clear in Tidel-cbe too, We dont have any official or authentic list of companies occupying the tidel park.
We had some news that TCS may occupy some space?

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore, which is yet to see the anticipated growth in the Information Technology sector, needs a host of initiatives to improve the IT eco system here.
The city currently has just a handful of large-scale IT players. Though the existing companies are expanding rapidly, as they grow they face problems related to catering, transport, entertainment, etc. And, new companies that want to start operations in Coimbatore are seeking better facilities.
Software companies focus on their core business and hence outsource most of their other needs. The options in the areas of associated and house keeping services, which include laundry, transport and providing business lunch, are limited here. For the middle-level managers in IT companies, mobility is important. Hence, they need more schools with CBSE syllabus for their children, says the former chairman of the Coimbatore chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry K. Thangaraj. The IT infrastructure here is improving. But, the growth of many of these services depends on demand. The service provider looks for a critical mass to launch or scale up and the critical mass is expected to come with the Tidel Park, adds Mr. Thangaraj.
KG Information System's Vice-President for Corporate Relations Jayamurali Balagurusamy says the Government should improve the basic infrastructure related to power, water and public transport. Some of the services are expensive compared to those in Chennai and Bangalore.
Soft skills of students should be developed at schools itself to increase their employability. “It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to give the best to the city,” Mr. Balagurusamy says.
“When an IT or IT Enabled Services company looks at tier-two cities, Coimbatore is thought of. The city has visibility. What turns down people here is mainly the cost,” according to the chairman of the Rathinam Group Madan A. Sendhil.
Coimbatore should start attracting the next level of IT and ITES companies. It should also develop local leaders in the sector as on the manufacturing front. The city should start focusing on the peripheral areas. The cost has to come down, Mr. Sendhil says. It is also important to brand Coimbatore as an IT destination, he adds.
satishanu April 3rd, 2010, 10:02 PM The India Land KGISL Tech Park here will have seven clients occupying 3.5 lakh sq.ft in a couple of months.
S. Salai Kumaran, Director of India Land, and R. Maheswaran, General Manager of Coimbatore Hi-Tech Infrastructure (CHIL), told presspersons here on Thursday that of the proposed 1.8 million sq.ft., construction of seven lakh sq.ft was over at the park that was located at the CHIL campus in Saravanampatti.
About 3.5 lakh sq.ft was operational with two companies - Ugam Solutions and C Bay – occupying space at the park. The total investment planned for the project was Rs. 320 crore and so far Rs. 230 crore had been invested. Another 3.5 lakh sq.ft. was ready for occupation by seven clients. Construction of the remaining seven lakh sq.ft. would start after the existing space was occupied. This was a green building with energy saving during construction and in operation, they said. The park was located in a special economic zone and Information Technology, IT enabled services and hardware assembly units could start operations in the zone.

maduraithala May 23rd, 2010, 05:20 PM Stating that Tamil Nadu had succeeded in the software industry owing to the availability of a large pool of educated work force and progressive policies among others, Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin described the State as the “growth star” of India.
Inaugurating the Global Development Centre (Information Technology Special Economic Zone) of Syntel at SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri on Saturday, he said: “As the Minister in charge of industries, I can say with a sense of pride that Tamil Nadu today excels among Indian States in industrialisation.”
“Tamil Nadu is one of the largest recipients of domestic and foreign investments in the country and has emerged as the ‘growth star' of India,” Mr. Stalin said adding that the State government was committed to spread the IT revolution to other parts of the State to create employment opportunities for the qualified rural youth.
Additional productivity improvements and the development of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities such as Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchi and Hosur as delivery centres would improve the State's advantage, he said. TIDEL Park in Coimbatore, with a floor space of 17 lakh square feet would be inaugurated next month.
He said Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi had a vision of making Tamil Nadu the software hub of South Asia and to achieve 25 per cent share of software production in the country. If this was achieved, it would give direct employment to eight lakh people and indirect employment to another 22 lakh people in Tamil Nadu, he said.
Thanking Syntel for its proposals to start SEZs in Tirunelveli and Madurai, for which Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu had handed over 25 acres in each of the cities, Mr. Stalin appealed to the company to cooperate with the State government in implementing its e-waste policy.
He also appealed to all IT companies to allocate 3 per cent of their budget for corporate social responsibility activities.
Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Minister for Information Technology, Prashant Ranade, chief executive officer and president, Syntel, Ram Singampalli, vice-president and Centre Head, Chennai, and N.N.R.Shravanan, general manager and head of administration, spoke.

Coimbatore, Aug 2 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today credited late union minister Murasoli Maran with being responsible for the IT revolution in the state and said he had asked him to frame an IT policy in the budget as far back as 1988-89. That is why we now see Tamil Nadu is in the forefront in the sector, with increase in software exports every year," he said after inaugurating the Rs 380 crore TIDEL Park here, the second after the one in Chennai. He recalled that former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had inaugurated the Tidel park in Chennai in 2000, since which the IT sector had registered growth. Union IT and Communication minister A Raja, who spoke, said a Rs 50 crore IT Research Academy would be set up at Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu, which would be ready in a year. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said software exports from Tamil Nadu had increased from 10.2 million dollars in 2001-02 to 73.9 million dollars this fiscal. The park, he said, would provide employment to 12,000 directly and more than 2,000 people indirectly. Tamil Nadu IT minister Dr Poongothai said six more IT SEZs would come up in the state at an estimated cost of Rs 675 crore in Hosur, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai,Tirunelveli and Salem. Omkar Rai, Managing Director, Software Technology Park of India (STPI), said STPI, with 51 centres in India, was closely working with Tamil Nadu for development of IT sector.

"With the phenomenal growth of the ICT sector, Chennai is all set to become the IT capital of India. The ICT growth has transformed Tamil Nadu as a modern economy – thanks to the presence of a large number of IT parks, the image of Chennai too has changed, from that of a coffee-loving conservative city into "the San Jose of India", said Dr M K Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Tamil Nadu.
Delivering the Valedictory Address at Connect 2010, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), here today, Dr Stalin said that the software exports from the State have increased from Rs 161 crore in 1996-97 to over Rs 36,600 crore in 2008-09. The software exports from Coimbatore, a tier-2 city, have risen to Rs 374 crore in 2008-09 from Rs 54 crore in 2004-05. The State has about 1700 registered IT and ITeS companies – for every two days, one software company is being setup in the State.
He said that the State Government is keen to promote physical infrastructure across the State – out of 29 notified IT SEZs in the State, 19 are already functional, employing to 46,000 people. It will act fast in and remove infrastructure bottlenecks in the State.
On the contributions of IT to the Indian economy, Dr Stalin said that the IT industry has made India a global power to reckon with. India is already the fourth largest IT market in Asia Pacific.
The industry is expected to create a revenue of US$ 73.1 billion in 2009-2010, as against US$ 69.4 billion in 2008-09, marking a 5% growth.

Regarding Chennai, this statement is wishful thinking. However, I am seeing IT growth stagnating in Chennai and lots of empty office spaces. Lets hope for the best.
Regarding CBE, the numbers are encouraging but still low. We need to immediately hit the gas pedal of IT growth in CBE. :)

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Tidel Park that was inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here on August 2 is expected to become operational before next January.
Some companies have booked space at the park and a couple of large-scale companies are also expected to occupy space at the Tidel, according to an official here. The Government has reduced the rent from Rs. 30 a sq ft to Rs. 25 a sq ft and has also brought down the advance amount for rental to six months. The minimum area to be occupied by a company at the park is also flexible though the Government has fixed it at 5,000 sq ft, the official said.
The park is located in a 56-acre special economic zone and has a total built up area of 17 lakh sq ft.:banana::banana:

Coimbatore Tidel Park, for which Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi laid the foundation in February 2007 and inaugurated on August 2 this year, is expected to take about a couple of months to become operational.
An official of the park told The Hindu on Tuesday that it had nine lakh sq ft IT space and would generate 10,000 IT jobs and about 2,000 indirect jobs when fully operational. The rate for occupancy of space at the park was revised to Rs. 25 a sq ft from Rs. 30 a sq ft and a company should occupy minimum 5,000 sq ft.
The official said talks were on with a couple of large-scale companies and also with smaller IT and IT- Enabled Services companies. Efforts were also on to bring in companies focusing on research and development and those in the incubation stage.
The IT industry was yet to revive completely from the impact of the economic slowdown and this could be one of the reasons for the IT companies to be reluctant to expand. With the State Government having developed world-class infrastructure here, IT companies in other cities were looking at Coimbatore as on option now for expansion, the official added. The Rs. 380-crore park was spread over 10 acres of a 56-acre special economic zone here.

Software company to expand operations in Coimbatore
ViSolve joins hands with Porter Consultancy
COIMBATORE: ViSolve, an IT consulting and support services firm, hopes to expand its research and development operations in the city.
Sena Palanisami, Chief Executive Officer, says the software company hopes to scale up its revenue and manpower in a few years. He was in the city recently to celebrate ViSolve's 15 years of operations.
“ViSolve is looking to grow 300 per cent in terms of resources and revenue in the next couple of years. The India-US head count will go up from 60 to over 200, and revenue will cross millions of dollars.”
The company offers IT consultancy, software product development, customisation and migration of IT support services, has expertise in Open Source Integrated Stack, health care IT, data centre implementation, migration, system security, etc.
The company will go public by 2013, says Mr. Sena, who has worked with Hewlett Packard for over 20 years.
In keeping with the expansion plans, ViSolve has joined hands with Porter Consultancy to form a new entity, Radiatus.
The objective of Radiatus will be to establish its supremacy in Linux, Windows and Unix migrations for enterprise applications and database, become a provider of migration expertise with leading independent infrastructure resellers and solution integrators, build migration tools, custom applications and open source vertical packages, and support customers to deploy private cloud environments and convergence infrastructure.
Brad Porter, vice president – Marketing, Radiatus, says Porter Consultancy will share its expertise in marketing, training and communication services to high-tech companies. The company will also get to access experience in enterprise computer marketing and services experience, migration business, observes Al Morgan, vice president - Sales.
Mr. Porter says Radiatus will look for business across geographies in the enterprise migration area. It will focus particularly in North America and Europe, where after the economic slowdown, companies are planning upgrade software.
Mr. Morgan says there is so much up for grabs in the enterprise migration business, as corporations are looking to cut cost and improve efficiency. Open source solutions and back-up support, Radiatus will help the companies improve their bottom line.
ViSolve is also working in the healthcare sector in the U.S. where there is so much business opportunity.
Following the passage of a law in the U.S., all clinics are mandated to digitise the data at their disposal. With 2015 as the deadline and federal tax incentive in the offing, clinics are looking for ways to go about it and that is where the business opportunity is.
ViSolve-Radiatus will offer its expertise to those software companies that are developing applications for the clinics, build its own open source applications and also offer consultation. “There is so much money to be made.”
Mr. Porter complements: “There are 200,000 clinics that will have to digitise data and that's the business we are looking at.”
Sena, who has his roots in a village near Coimbatore, says the city has a good pool of talent, offers a better lifestyle compared to Bangalore, Hyderabad or other cities, and, above all, is known for innovation.

karthikarthik December 11th, 2010, 07:04 AM CHENNAI: Stung by global recession, growth of software exports from Tamil Nadu skidded to 4.99% in the fiscal ended March 2010. According to government data, exports grew modestly this year compared to the scorching 41.6% pace it witnessed in the year ended March 2009.
Within Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore, which is emerging as the next destination for IT exports after Chennai, registered a growth of 90% with Rs 710.66 crore, compared to Rs 373.76 crore in 2008-09. Exports from Puducherry grew by 31.78%, while growth was sluggish in Madurai and Tiruchi, clocking 2.25% and 9.07% respectively.
Software exports from India grew by 5.5% for the fiscal ended March 2010. Of this, a lion's share was from Karnataka, which had exports worth around Rs 76,000 crore. However, Karnataka too felt the heat of the meltdown as exports grew only by 1.4%, compared with 23% in 2008-09.
"2009-10 was horrible for the software industry because of recession. I expected growth of around 8%. Substantial work is done in Chennai for the US and European regions, which were reeling under recession. However, things are showing a lot of promise at the ground level. Big players are expanding and we are also expanding operations in the city," Arun Jain, chairman of Polaris Software Lab, told TOI.

Arul Murugan December 20th, 2010, 03:17 PM Govt aim to create 10,000 jobs through rural BPOs: Minister for Information Technology
Udhagamandalam, 14th Dec: Masinagudy, a small village with many tribals adjoining the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve near here on Monday became part of the State Government's efforts to take the benefits of Information Technology to the rural areas.
A Rural Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) project put together by the Coimbatore-based GRG Trust and Scope International Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), UK was inaugurated by the Minister for Information Technology, Poongothai Aladi Aruna.
Addressing the gathering, she said that such initiatives were in keeping with the aim of the Karunanidhi Government to create employment opportunities in different parts of the State and improve local economy. Pointing out that Tamil Nadu was the first to introduce Computer Science in schools and evolve a separate IT policy, she said that the measures reflected the far-sightedness of the government.
Exhorting the students to tune themselves to a computer-based future, she said that India was growing fast, thanks to its knowledge-based economy. The State Government was increasingly becoming a facilitator, she said and added that a subsidy of Rs. 7 lakh was being extended for creating 100 seats through rural BPO centres.
Three such centres would come into being in Salem shortly. “My aim is to create 10,000 jobs through rural BPOs,” Ms. Aruna said.
The Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, said that employment opportunities were less in the Nilgiris. Efforts were on to revive the ailing Hindustan Photo Films.
The BPO in Masinagudy would be of considerable help to tribal girls. The Nilgiris Collector, Archana Patnaik, hoped that similar facility would be provided in more places. The Chief Executive Officer (Asia), SCB, Jaspal Bindra said that it was the first such project of the bank in India.
He expressed the confidence that it would empower women and the local community and also had a cascading effect on other communities. The Principal Secretary, IT, Tamil Nadu, P.W.C. Davidar, said that the beneficiaries could use their skill to increase their earnings. The Managing Director, ELCOT, Santosh Babu, also spoke.
Distribution of kits with unique identity cards by Ms. Aruna marked the occasion. The Managing Trustee, GRG Trust, G. Rangaswamy, welcomed the gathering. Earlier speaking to presspersons, Ms. Aruna said that to begin with the Masinagudy unit would benefit 25 girls who had passed out of the GRG Memorial Tribal Higher Secondary School at Vazhaithottam. In future, it would help others to train themselves in basic data entry.

Senthil,
I have a doubt, whether the above outputs are for Coimbatore, Madurai/Trichy city specific or TN gvt has divided them as regions? because Salem has few BPO(Vee Technologies, Cap Gemini etc.,) and small software processing related companies with operation to Europe/US, I guess even Erode/Tiruppur too have such smaller operation. Whether they come under Coimbatore account?

Ugam Solutions plans to double headcount
Coimbatore, Jan. 4
Ugam Solutions, a provider of market research operations, is looking to double its headcount here to 400 (from 200) in the coming year, the Vice-President and Chief Talent Officer, Mr Dharmesh Mistry, said.
For finding the right talent pool, the company inked a memorandum of understanding with Coimbatore-based KG College of Arts and Science recently.
Explaining the significance of this MoU to Business Line Mr Mistry said, “Availability of skilled manpower with the necessary training in soft skills has always been a bottleneck. This MoU is expected to support our growth plans here. We will provide relevant training to the students of KG CAS in marketing decision support systems and absorb them to fuel growth”.
Stating that Coimbatore has been the growth driver for the company, he said, “Our operations over the past one year have given us the confidence to give the required growth thrust and make it sustainable. This MoU is expected to enhance the employability of the candidates. There is, however, no compulsion for them to join Ugam. But this working exposure to corporate environment would definitely give them an edge to join elsewhere.”

IT companies forming regional bodies in smaller cities
Not waiting for Nasscom presence, have begun work on spurring investment, common issues and govt lobbying.
Information technology (IT) companies in smaller cities are forming regional associations to attract investments and get their demands fulfilled at the local level, as industry body Nasscom is unable to spread its wings in many such cities.
Smaller companies in places such as Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kozhikode, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have created regional fora to sell their locations and also lobby state governments.
Rooted in small cities, these associations believe the presence of major companies in these regions will boost growth of small and medium enterprises. When it comes to larger and national issues like the STPI scheme extension, they prefer to work with Nasscom.

....
IT attraction
With major IT companies scouting for low-cost destinations in tier-II and tier-III cities to expand their operations, to minimise their cost structure, smaller towns are becoming increasingly attractive. A study by Nasscom and A T Kearney, ‘Location roadmap for IT- BPO growth’ have identified 50 major locations, including Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, Hubli-Dharwad, Bhopal and Goa, among others, as growth drivers for the industry.
The smaller companies in these cities feel the lack of infrastructure and guidance for start-ups are the major challenges for growth. The organisations are partnering various government administrations to overcome these challenges.

TCS, Wipro and HCL were alloted land in this SEZ not floors in Tidel Park.
To begin with TCS and HCL may start OPS in Tidel Park. There is some rift in the access road (Vilankurichi rd) and proposed ROB in the railway gate. Wipro is impacted a lot in the rift as their unfinished building stands tall for more than one year. This will not impact the allotment of companies in Tidel Park.. I heard that work is still going on in Tidel and it will take atleast 2 months to 100% completion. Also I got a news that 100% allotment is already done, I am trying to get the company names.

Thanks Senthil. I'm desperately looking forward for operations to go at full swing soon. Try to share us the company names, so that many like me will get benefitted outta it.
karthikarthik January 21st, 2011, 03:40 PM Its really bad to know that still wipro issue is not resolved. This also makes other allotted companies including TCS and HCL to wait. TCS has reduced it CAPEX expenditure for this year. This also may delay the construction in the SEZ.

Ohw!!! For the moment just keeping the fingers crossed that Tidel would get operational soon. I really don wanna wait till ascendas and the other IT park to get operational before Tidel.
cbepulikutty February 3rd, 2011, 07:40 AM I heard from one of my friend that the dev work within the tidel park is very slow and nobody is caring about it and it might take more than 6 months to complete it...
After the elections, if the other party comes to power which sure they would then they will show nil interest in this tidel park which was inaugurated by the present govt...
All in All not good news to cbe-it...
sivarajkumar February 11th, 2011, 07:23 AM Almost 7months is going to get over after Tidelpark Inaguration.Still not even a single company occupied place. Also Wipro Building is same as wht they left before a year...This gives big disappointment to IT in our Coimbatore.I see KG IT park developing rapidly in Keeranatham.Around 4 to 5 buidings are under construction....Hope they atlest give some good companies to Coimbatore.....
karthikarthik February 14th, 2011, 06:16 AM COIMBATORE: Coimbatore's status as a much sought after tier-II location for software services just got a boost. German technology giant Robert Bosch has signed up additional one lakh square feet space to expand its footprint in the textile city.
Traditionally known as the Manchester of the South for its textile mills, Coimbatore is now acquiring a reputation as an emerging hub for software services exports. Exports from the city witnessed a 90% growth at Rs 710.66 crore for the fiscal ended March 2010.
Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI), the software development arm of Bosch, which employs 2,700 associates in the city, will invest Rs 80-100 crore for its second phase of expansion. The company, which invested Rs 135 crore in the first phase, will hire 1,500 more associates for the second phase in the Coimbatore Hi-Tech Infrastructure (CHIL) special economic zone, promoted by IndiaLand near the city.
The second phase would be ready for occupation in the third quarter of 2012, centre head, RBEI, Coimbatore, Venugopal R said. RBEI recently inaugurated its reliability testing centre in Coimbatore, built on an investment of around Rs 50 crore. The company, which clocked 20% growth in revenues at its Coimbatore centre, is confident of maintaining the trend in the current year.
Robert Bosch, it is learnt, will use Coimbatore as its second hub, after Bangalore. "Substantial tech work, which Bosch does in India, would be passed on to Coimbatore," sources said.
"With 181 engineering colleges across nine districts affiliated to Anna University, Coimbatore, the region produces 50,000 engineering graduates a year, which makes it very attractive. Software work done in Coimbatore is at least 20% cheaper than in Chennai and with good weather, the city is poised to become the next big destination for the software industry. The main issue which is plaguing faster growth is poor infrastructure," K Purushothaman, regional director, Nasscom, the apex body of software services exporters, said.

CHENNAI: Dell is in the process of setting up a second centre across 1,50,000 sq ft centre in Coimbatore.
The centre coming up on Dell's 7.2-acre campus in the Coimbatore Hi-Tech Infrastructure Private Limited (CHIL) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that Dell acquired around two years ago. To begin with, it will have a seating capacity of 1,500. The company now has 600 employees.
The centre will primarily service international clients across industry verticals, and offer a full suite of operations relating to Dell's services division like application development, infrastructure management and BPO services. "The centre will go live in the second or third quarter of this year," said a Dell spokesperson.
This will be Dell's second centre in Coimbatore. The first-with 20,000 sq feet and a 300-seat capacity-is in the KGISL campus. Dell entered Coimbatore by acquiring Perot Systems.
"In view of the increasing demand, we needed to expand. The new centre is part of the first phase of the expansion. In the second phase, we will create additional towers in the same campus. Depending on future requirements, we will make further plans," said the Dell spokesperson.
kalyan_erode February 17th, 2011, 09:05 AM COIMBATORE & CHENNAI: Early IT birds who made Coimbatore their sanctuary are now on an expansion drive. The pleasant climate, the reasonably large talent pool and relatively cheaper realty have influenced companies like Robert Bosch, Dell, Cognizant and Wipro to expand their presence in Coimbatore.
Robert Bosch has just inked a deal to acquire one lakh square feet (sq ft) of land for a development centre. Dell is opening its second centre in June. Cognizant has announced a $500-million expansion plan, of which Coimbatore would get a chunk of the investments. Wipro's campus is nearly ready while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is waiting for approval from Elcot, the state's nodal agency for tech investments, to set up a 29-acre campus.
Coimbatore exported software worth Rs 910 crore for the year ended in March 2010, a growth of 90% over the previous year.
"The entry of big players would make all the difference," says Ashok Bakthavathsalam, managing director, KGISL, which has leased out more than one million sq ft space to IT biggies including Cognizant. The city is a good hunting ground for talent, he says.
"With 181 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University in Coimbatore, the city produces 50,000 engineering graduates every year, making it very attractive. Software work in Coimbatore is at least 20% cheaper than Chennai, and with good weather, the city is poised to become the next big destination for the software industry," said K Purushothaman, regional director, Nasscom.
For Cognizant, Coimbatore was a surprise. "Our growth in Coimbatore has surpassed our own expectations. Industry watchers see Cognizant's growth here as among the fastest in a tier-2 city in India," says Vishnu Potty, centre head of Cognizant in Coimbatore.
The centre focuses on four industry clusters - financial services (including banking and insurance), healthcare (including life-sciences), manufacturing and retail, and telecommunications, media and entertainment.
"Our delivery track record and our industrialised factory model approach contribute to our continued growth. The future of our Coimbatore centre looks promising and we believe that it will continue to grow at a rapid pace," says Potty.
The growth of IT in the city could be even faster. The main issue plaguing faster growth is poor infrastructure, according to Purushothaman. Another hurdle is the lack of quality mid-level talent in the city.
When companies like Robert Bosch Engineering Solutions (RBEI), which employs 2,700 people in the city, looks for lateral recruits from outside Coimbatore, it is confronted by a strange request - a job for spouse as well. "With limited options in Coimbatore, working couples are finding it difficult to relocate to the city," says Venugopal R, centre head of Robert Bosch, Coimbatore.
However, industry observers say, for the city to attract more mid-level professionals, it has to set up more CBSE schools and residential apartments. Though things have started to improve in the past one-and-a-half years, the pace has been quite slow. Support services such as housekeeping and transport should also improve, they say.

Exterro, a U.S.-based IT company, will invest nearly Rs. 9 crore this year to shore up its Coimbatore facility and hit a three-digit growth in revenue.
Its President and Chief Executive Officer, Bobby Balachandran, told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the firm had plans to double its employee strength in a year. Exterro started its operations here in 1996 and employed 86 people. Its main market was the U.S. and the EU. The company aimed to increase its employee strength in the U.S. too.
Mr. Balachandran said the firm offered an IT platform called ‘Fusion', and its target clients were the global 1000 companies.
It had invested Rs. 5 crore here so far. Exterro was in talks with channel partners to offer its product in India, the U.K., Germany and Japan. This would be finalised by mid-2011, he said.

Coimbatore's vision to become one of the major IT destinations of the country has started turning into a reality with some of the big companies in the sector bringing the city under their expansion map.
Apart from companies such as Robert Bosch, Cognizant, Cbay and Ford that are already present here, IBM, Polaris, and Mphasis are also said to be exploring Coimbatore as an option for their operations.
Cognizant
Meanwhile, the existing companies are expanding. Cognizant's growth here is among the fastest in a tier-two city.
It started operations in Coimbatore with 400 people and has more than 5,000 now. For Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions, the phase two expansion here is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. The number of people employed will go up by 1,500 with the phase two expansion.
Enquiries for space in Coimbatore shot up during the last six months. “We have at least one enquiry a week,” says B. Jayamurali, vice-president (Corporate Relations) of KGiSL.
The Coimbatore Hi-Tech Infrastructure has about 125 acres notified as Special Economic Zone and close to 80 acres were used. It is one of the largest private SEZs in the State for IT, ITES and Hardware sectors.
At the multi-tenant facility at the SEZ, about three lakh sq.ft of the six lakh sq.ft was occupied.
In another 12 to 18 months, about 20,000 people would be working in the IT companies in Saravanampatty area, he says.
The KCT Tech Park has nearly two lakh sq.ft of IT space. It is expected to be fully occupied in a few months. The Software Technology Parks of India facility at the Kumaraguru campus (administrative block) has one lakh sq.ft. “The growth is tremendous during the last four months,” says Rajeev Kamineni, Chief Officer of Kumaraguru College of Technology. The Tidel Park, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in August 2010, has nine lakh sq.ft of IT space.
“There are enquiries and talks are on,” says a Tidel official here. Some of the local IT companies are also seeking space at the park. Their requirements are for smaller areas (10,000 sq.ft or less) and efforts are on to accommodate them in the non-processing zone. Thus, companies involved in business process outsourcing can also look at Tidel, the official says.
Slow take-off
Mr. Jayamurali says one of the reasons for the sector's slow take-off here is inadequate IT space earlier. In 2006, just about three lakh sq.ft was availabe. Today, it is nearly 30 lakh sq.ft. The economic slump had pulled down market sentiments then.
With the economy reviving, enquiries have risen sharply. When big companies come to a city, they occupy larger space and provide more job opportunities. This gives confidence for other players to follow.
Kad07 February 18th, 2011, 11:04 PM COIMBATORE: Any major industrial growth leads to a surge in the demand for supporting sectors too.
For the IT sector, there is a demand for larger-scale catering, transport, facility management services, and infrastructure. And, the availability of these services is growing.
The catering service providers cook the food in a centralised kitchen and take it to the distribution centre or cook the food at the facility provided in-house.
The service is slightly different for the sector as the volume is huge, the menu is changed regularly, and there is a focus on high quality, says one of the catering service providers.
House keeping
While the IT companies have annual maintenance contract for many of their electrical installations, facility managers maintain these on a daily basis.
The generators, UPS, fire fighting devices, and plumbing installations are maintained by them. They also help in house keeping, says B. Udaya Kumar, who is with the facility management at KCT Tech Park.

They look to local talent
http://www.hindu.com/2011/02/19/images/2011021961000301.jpg
COIMBATORE: Computer science and information technology (IT) graduates need no longer look towards Chennai and Bangalore for jobs. Coimbatore city is soon going to open its arms to them with the entry of IT players.
With IT companies starting to set shop here, they are already on the manhunt for local talent. The trend has just begun and hopes to gain momentum with more companies joining the bandwagon.
The period from December 2010 till now has seen these companies recruit students according to their local requirement. Payoda Technologies, a Coimbatore-based IT company, has recruited 50 candidates so far, while Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions has recruited more because their Coimbatore setup is being planned on a large scale.
The decision to come to Coimbatore was based on the availability of skilled manpower, graduating from the engineering colleges in the vicinity, Robert Bosch says.
The ability to attract top- quality talent has been a particular advantage in this region, according to Cognizant.
“All our IT space occupants have become our recruiters. Even if only 850 students pass out a year, there are still opportunities for 1,100”, says Rajeev Kamineni, Chief Officer of Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT).
According to K. Senthamarai Kannan, Training and Placement Officer of KCT, this has brought in a new trend.
“Hereafter computer science and IT engineering graduates will get an opportunity to get work right in Coimbatore”.
These companies are, however, not restricting themselves to IT and computer science graduates.
They are also looking for those from streams such as electrical and communication engineering, electronics and instrumentation, mechatronics, and mechanical engineering.
This is because they are happy with the quality they are expecting for the entry-level positions.
The companies are now looking at a few top colleges for their immediate requirement.
But it is expected that once more companies come in, they will look at local talent from colleges that are situated close to the respective companies.
Since companies are viewing engineering talent of Coimbatore students on a par with that of Chennai, the prospects look bright for those who will be passing out this year and the next year.

Return of the natives
COIMBATORE: With more number of IT and IT Enabled Services companies opening facilities here, it has thrown open opportunities for software professionals from the city to return home.
For instance, Sanatanan Muralidharan, who works at Ugam Solutions here, decided to work in Coimbatore so that he can be closer to his family in Palakad. Having spent 10 years in Chennai, he decided to move to Coimbatore so that his two-year old son can have the experience of growing up in an extended family that resides in Palakad.
“It takes just an hour or so to drive down to Palakad. I have been in Coimbatore for the last one year and I have not regretted it,” he says.
Several software professionals like Mr. Muralidharan are willing to relocate to Coimbatore as it is their home town or they are from nearby places such as Erode, Salem or Palakkad.
Infrastructure
Coimbatore is catching up with the bigger cities in terms of social infrastructure. There are several software companies here now and so, “we will not lose out career-wise because we are here,” he adds.
For Manish K. Bafna and M. Nandakumar, who are with Exterro (which started operations here in 2006), they have worked in IT companies in Bangalore and Chennai respectively, and returning to Coimbatore was because of several factors. One reason was to be at home, with their family.
In Chennai, it takes two hours to travel to office every day. Bigger cities have problems such as pollution too. There are many software engineers from Coimbatore working in other cities. Some of them may prefer to come back, they say.

Kad07 March 3rd, 2011, 11:08 PM Develop good ecosystem for IT growth
COIMBATORE: Industries and educational institutions should work together to develop the knowledge base on specific issues and trends for the growth of the Information Technology sector here, PWC Davidar, Principal Secretary, Department of Information Technology, said here on Thursday.
Inaugurating Connect Coimbatore, a conference on Innovative ICT for World Class Enterprises, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he said Coimbatore's software exports last year was over Rs. 700 crore.
The industry would be able to develop here with a good ecosystem. One aspect of the ecosystem was to develop the knowledge base. A concerted effort was needed from the industry and the institutions to have an interactive consultation on a focused topic. It should be anchored by the industry and knowledge inputs should also come from the industry.
Educational institutions should also focus on developing the communication skills of students. India was scoring over other countries in several fields. The only gap was communications skills.
Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman of Cognizant Technology Solutions, said the ecosystem needed for any city to develop included educational infrastructure, good companies, active and vibrant industry associations, research activities, and diversity. Coimbatore was already well-known for many of these factors. Coimbatore required leadership. “The people in the city should behave like leaders in a sector for the specific industry to develop here.” Coimbatore should stake a claim and choose to be a leader in a chosen area.
For any industry to be successful in the long-term, it should invest in people, innovation, research and green initiatives and adopt the global standards on these issues. Technology helped improve productivity. It played a crucial role to make an industry competitive.
The IT companies here should look at key industrial verticals and see how technology could be used to make these sectors more productive.
Nandini Rangaswamy, Chairperson of CII-Tamil Nadu, said the IT industry here was gaining importance. Several domestic BPO companies were moving to tier-two and tier-three towns to service the domestic clients. Industry members should consider Coimbatore a preferential investment destination as it had a vast human resource pool.
Ashok Bakthavathsalam, Chairman of Connect Coimbatore, said growth of IT sector in Coimbatore had been tremendous during the last few years and the city would soon be a destination for IT companies. J. Balamurugan, Chairman of CII, Coimbatore Zone, said the CII was organising the annual IT event since 2000. R. Venugopal, Convenor of the ICT Panel, CII Coimbatore Zone, proposed a vote of thanks.

From Airport if you take L&T bypass you can reach Eachanari within 25 min. The location they have mentioned in their wensite is in between Pollachi Road and Madukkarai Market road. Embassy is a renowned real estate group which hosts some leading clients. I have been to their campus at inner ring road i.e Embassy Golf Links-7,000,000 sft completed+9,000,000 sq ft(construction going on) which hosts majors like microsoft, IBM, Dell, KPMG, Netapp, ANZ Goldman Sachs, Target, yahoo and Fidelity. We cannot rule out the possibility of having 4,000,000 sq ft facility in CBE.
TShyam March 4th, 2011, 01:16 PM Maybe sometime in the future, currently it is too early. 4 million sq.ft means 4000 to 5000 crore exports per year from that park alone. Cbe totally exported only 1000 crores last year. So it maybe ready for a 4 million sq.ft park by say 2015/16. I am not questioning the capability of the developer but the capacity of the city to take it.

Towards end of 2010, they got approval to build another 65acre SEZ in Sarjapur road. But it will take another 2 years for the bldg to be ready. Similar is the case of building another SEZ near Devanahalli.
The internal mandate for last one year is to move out of Bangalore as there is hardly any capacity available in Bangalore to start new accounts/projects.
Currently Kolkatta, Chennai's Perungudi and Mahindra City locations are expanded vigorously.
Had the CBE TIDEL park be readied on time coupled with aggressive marketing, high chance of Wipro opening in Tidel premises itself.
With no will to resolve the railway flyover tangle and completing Tidel park on time on the government part, one can only wish that things move in right direction.
Me thinks the powers be might have hidden stakes in private SEZ developed in CBE. Hence the soft pedaling of TIDEL park completion.

Tier II and III cities now house 103 captive centres of MNC companies. Though the growth of the IT-BPO sector has centered on Bangalore and five other cities, Tier II and III cities are gaining momentum, said a study conducted for Nasscom by Zinnov Management Consulting.
The survey was released in Hyderabad on Thursday in connection with the two day Global Captive Conclave 2011. “We have seen cities such as Chandigarh, Nagpur and Coimbatore become a preferred location for MNC companies to set up their second or third centre in India,” said Zinnov CEO Pari Natarajan.
Kolkata, Trivandrum, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Baroda, Surat, Bhubaneshwar, Jaipur, Thane and others are the other preferred locations, apart from the six preferred IT destinations of Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, NCR, Hyderabad and Chennai.
Detailing the other findings of the study, he said the average size of a captive has grown from 375 employees to 575 employees.
During 2009-10, about 40 captives have either expanded operations or set up new centres in India. Further, the study said India accounted for 33 per cent of the total worldwide new captive announcements in 2010. Natarajan said 11 captives are planned in India with an investment of $800 million and five of them are in tier II and III cities.
“Captives prefer tier II locations for expansion and business continuity for cost benefit reasons,” he said. However, lack of infrastructure and inability to attract middle and senior level management hampered growth in these cities.
Service delivery from tier I cities in India still works out significantly lower than the competition in Asia, Eastern Europe and South America and tier II cities in India offer a further 30 per cent reduction in the operating costs, the report said.
Within the captives, the Indian BPO market accounts for 25.4 cent of the total $12.3 billion captive market size and has grown from 26 in 2000 to 113 in 2009 in number of units.

Captive Call/Contact centers
A company which plans to send jobs to India has two options - either do it on its own (captive centre) or outsource it to the companies in India which have the relevant skills. You could consider combining the two models too.
Captive centers are those centers that are operated for servicing their own clients and not third party clients
kalyan_erode April 7th, 2011, 04:17 PM Chennai, April 7 (IANS) City-based Ford Business Services Center Pvt Ltd – a wholly owned business services subsidiary of global auto giant Ford Motor Company – is planning to increase head count at its Coimbatore centre.
‘Our current head count is around 4,700 and we are planning to take it to around 5,000. In Coimbatore, we plan to add around 125 people by the end of this year, take the total strength to 500. The total seating capacity our Coimbatore facility is 750,’ Joginder P. Singh, president and managing director, told IANS.
He said the company serves Ford Motor’s various global operations in terms of information technology, accounting, engineering services (vehicle design and others), business analytics, tax related work, transactional work for Ford Credit (finance arm for Ford vehicles) and others.
‘Our employees here serve Ford Motor’s operations in nine time zones. We have been able to standardise many of the operations now,’ Singh added.
Speaking about operations in Coimbatore, around 500 km from here, he said: ‘The attrition rate is certainly low there. Further, we are able to attract talent within and outside Coimbatore.’
He said the Indian subsidiary is the only captive for Ford Motor though it has hired some third-party service providers in some other geographies.
‘In India, we are growing at around 25-30 percent,’ Singh said.

Challenges identified for the growth of the IT sector
COIMBATORE: Transport connectivity, vendor capabilities and cost competitiveness have been identified as some of the challenges that need to be addressed for the growth of the Information Technology (IT) sector here.
The NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies) organised a CEO Forum here on Monday on “Coimbatore – Destination of Choice for IT and BPO Companies”. The participants identified the main challenges that need to addressed for the growth of the sector here.
Summing up the discussions, Joginder P. Singh, President and Managing Director of Ford Business Services, said some of the major challenges here were the need for better roads, air and rail connectivity, talent recruitment, vendor capability for supporting services, cost competitiveness and branding Coimbatore. “We need action on these,” he said. The speed at which the sector had grown here was encouraging.
There were numerous challenges. But these were not insurmountable. The IT companies here should work together in their common areas of interest. “There is a need for collaboration.”
Coimbatore had several advantages. But, these need to be put in the public domain. Further, “Coimbatore needs to be cost competitive on a sustainable basis,” he said.
According to Ashok Bhakthavatsalam, Managing Director of KG Information Systems, Coimbatore was attractive for transaction and non voice-based service providing companies. Business Process Outsourcing as an industry was a challenge here for those in the small and medium-scale business segment. There was a need to brand Coimbatore, and achieve cost competitiveness. Talent was usually picked up by the larger companies and hence smaller companies had a problem in recruiting fresh candidates. “We need a son of the soil who will bat for Coimbatore for the IT sector to take off here,” he said.
At the interactive session, the participants said the game of the day was speed. The challenges were almost the same for Coimbatore and Chennai. In Chennai, collective representation with adequate data helped the industry. A similar effort was needed here. The common needs, innovative ideas and data should be presented to the Government jointly.
avinash2060 April 29th, 2011, 09:47 AM Coimbatore, April 26:
‘Is Coimbatore a destination of choice for the IT-BPO companies that have established operations here or has the city emerged as the ‘ideal IT destination?'
This debate has been going on for years with the CII, Coimbatore zone, promoting the city as the ‘ideal destination', while those that have forayed here maintain that it seemed ‘destination of choice' when the costs were escalating and attrition rates – peaking in tier I cities, though not any more.
“Coimbatore is as costly or more than some of the bigger IT hubs. Land prices have soared in recent years, connectivity still remains an issue and above all, it has not been easy retaining the middle management team,” say industry insiders.
The 20-odd industry captains who converged at the 11 {+t} {+h} edition of Nasscom CEO Forum at The Residency this morning felt that a lot more needs to be done to remain on top and emerge a stronger IT- BPO destination.
Highlighting some of the hurdles in this growth journey, Mr K. Purushothaman, Regional Director, Nasscom (Tamil Nadu and Kerala) said “while the region has a lot to offer in terms of talent pool, climate, educational institutions and so on, it lacked a sponsor, brand identity to market Coimbatore. There is a need to team up within the industry, instead of voicing woes in isolation.”
He urged the industry captains to come together, unite, throw up innovative ideas and compile industry-wide facts and figures (not company data) when seeking Government's support for resolving any issue.
“The Government has multiple things to do, but we must team up within the industry while working with the Government,” he said.
Innovation
He also pointed out that companies would outgrow the present day challenges and should therefore prepare themselves to take the lead and keep the ball rolling. “Be proactive, not reactive' he said.
Summing up the proceedings, Mr Joginder P. Singh, President and Managing Director of Ford Business Service Centre, conceded that the pace of growth was good, challenges – numerous but not insurmountable.

Building mini-Singapores in India
ANYONE driving into Whitefield, Bangalore's IT hub, will pause and marvel at the International Tech Park Bangalore (ITPB, above).
There was no such thing as an IT park in India when Singapore company Ascendas ventured into India in 1994 to build the ITPB. Today, it is the benchmark model for all in the industry in India.
The park, from its small beginnings, has grown. Situated on 69 acres of land, over 27,000 people work in the park today.
Ascendas' footprint across India too has grown over the years. It now has IT parks in Chennai, Hyderabad, Gurgaon and Pune with a new one under construction in Coimbatore.
"We have a total of 265 acres all over India. We are also looking to increase our portfolio by acquiring existing buildings and enhancing and improving them," says Ms Chong Siak Ching (right), president and CEO of Ascendas, a company well known as a developer and manager of business space.

The minimum occupancy at the park by a company should be 5,000 sq.ft. and the rent is Rs. 25 per sq.ft. With operations starting at the park, built at an investment of Rs. 380 crore, the supportive service providers are also to open shop soon. kalyan_erode May 16th, 2011, 11:38 AM CHENNAI, India – Ford Global Business Services has ambitious plans for expansion in the city of Coimbatore, where the company’s presence has given impetus to growth of the urban centre itself. Executive Director of Global Business Services Joginder Singh who is also convenor of National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), Coimbatore chapter, stressed this during his recent visit to Coimbatore.
Summing up the discussions at a NASSCOM CEO forum, Singh said some of the major challenges in setting up operations in Coimbatore were the need for better roads, air and rail connectivity, talent recruitment, vendor capability for supporting services, cost competitiveness and a more effective branding strategy for Coimbatore. Citing the growth of business services including IT sectors in Coimbatore as impressive, he said though the city has some advantages, the business service and IT players should collaborate more to promote it as a destination. The meeting was co-chaired by the managing director of KG Information Systems, regional director of NASSCOM, TN and Kerala region and centre heads of Cognizant and Robert Bosch respectively.
Singh took time to visit the Ford Business Service Centre (FBSC) team in Coimbatore and was pleased to see the strides made within a very short period of time."We are absolutely thrilled by the great team spirit and camaraderie of employees here in working with the FBSC colleagues in Chennai," he said at an all-employee meet. He called this 'Coimbatore spirit' the way forward for team bonding and a great work environment. Singh celebrated the two-year anniversary of the FBSC centre in Coimbatore by cutting a cake and inaugurating 'SPREC', a periodic sports meet held by FBSC Coimbatore.
Commencing operations in February 2009, the FBSC centre in Coimbatore quickly doubled its operations to 400 and is looking to reach its assigned strength of 783 in future. Set up to provide a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for about 250 vital functions; it has expanded its role to cover to 650 vital activities in 2010. Today, the facility, with over 20 departments operational, is a proven business continuity centre and on its way to emerging as a full-fledged business service centre.
"Coimbatore proves to be an attractive destination because of its salubrious climate, proximity to Chennai operations, lower cost of living, readily available and talented pool of college and technical graduates and higher employee retention," says Krishnan Narayan, the centre manager of Coimbatore FBSC.
Singh concluded his visit by meeting with key officials from local academic institutions to help attract future talent to Ford.

I dont know real situation there but hope u r proved wrong. Even iam getting bored and frustrated staying away from home in a foreign land. Even in India i dont like to settle in Chennai due to its climate and fast life which iam not sure my papa and mamma can get acquainted. If Engr and textile industry already having a gud presence here if IT also clicked then Coimbatore will be a perfect place to live a life with peacefullness of a village and facilities of a city and working culture of a metro.
thillai_selvan June 6th, 2011, 11:04 AM ^^ Why every one is always saying about Chennai's climate? I always feel Chennai's climate is better than south TN(Tirunelveli/Tuticorin). I can say they are even hotter than Chennai.

U r absolutely correct. When comparing to Tuticorin, Chennai is ok. But still persons coming from Coimbatore, Pollachi will find Chennai very hot and humid. And i have many friends in Chennai who would love to settle themselves in Coimbatore than in mumbai or puna even if offer is relatively less.

An year back I seriously was dreaming that I would come back and work @ Tidel.. However now I've just woke up from the dream I guess.. What is it that we Coimbatoreans have to do so that we get what we deserve.. A pathetic world, sorry a state that we live in..
naser_cbe June 6th, 2011, 03:33 PM I don't understand why all the guys working outside CBE are turning only to TIDEL park for coming back to CBE. There are lot of companies in CHIL SEZ in saravanampatti. The two biggies - CTS and BOSCH are located here and they are very much in the hunt for local talent. It is not a herculean task to come back to CBE. Just join CTS or BOSCH and your dream becomes true.
Apart from these two big companies, there is also exterro, CBay, Perot, KGiSL, Pace systems, Payoda, CG-Vak, etc.

I have been told by some very reliable sources that IBM has confirmed space at CBE-TIDEL and interior works would commence very shortly.Official announcement can be expected sometime in may.You could treat this as a strong rumour!
What happened to IBM?Are they really coming to CBE.
Also can someone confirm what type of work is being done in Perot-Dell, is it only BPO kind of job?

That diff will be there. There is a huge Salary difference between mumbai and Chennai, Mumbai and Hydrabad that does not stop companies from operating from chennai or hydrabad because of employees prefernce for mumbai due to its higher salary.
It was for the same reason outsourcing jobs from us and europe becomes a reality. So eventualy companies will start finding the targetted manpower at the lower prize(compared to Chennai) and will start moving their significant human capital there.
senthilnatha June 7th, 2011, 08:29 AM Classifications of Indian cities
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_Indian_cities
The Status of Indian cities comprises two ranking systems used by the Government of India to allocate compensatory[disambiguation needed] allowances to the cities in the country. The list classifies cities in India based on two parameters — Compensatory City Allowance (CCA), further divided into categories A-1, A, B-1 and B-2, and House Rent Allowance (HRA), further divided into categories A-1, A, B-1, B-2 and C. This classification was initially based on the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission of India (1997). City statuses were later revised based on the results of the 2001 Census of India.

A-1 A-1 Chennai
B-1 B-1 Coimbatore
cbepulikutty June 8th, 2011, 06:55 AM Yeah.. It is True.. CTS offers them less because it has not got any competition in coimbatore (although there are other small cos).. Lot of employess in CTS Coimbatore are complaining about this compensation issue as there are less options for them right now and the management are exploiting this...
rajeshms June 8th, 2011, 07:34 AM Ideally the salary structure excluding one's basic salary such as HRA, Conveyance etc will be low in a non metro city(As Mr.Senthil has mentioned). Thats the main reason why companies in a non metro city(Coimbatore) offer a comparitively lesser package than wat it offers in a metro. I think competition in a city has nothing to do with the salary structure of a company(Atleast for fresher). An experienced guy on the other hand can demend his own package anywhere provided he's so darn guud in what he does.

Exactly if you said to HR that you want to be with family , then your salary will be reduced. Even they are not willing to give the pay which is being already paid in Metro. Many has come to a mindset that atleast if we get the same pay, they are willing to come to coimbatore.

These problems will be resolved if we have another couple of companies like TCS / HCL started its operations. Cognizant can utilize this chance only now, once the competitors enters the market, then we are the kings again. They have to provide us how muchever we demand.

sivarajkumar June 9th, 2011, 05:44 PM IBM India opened a branch office here on Wednesday as part of its geographic expansion initiative in key growth centres.
Nipun Mehrotra, vice-president – General Business, Routes and Geographic Expansion of IBM India, told presspersons here on Wednesday that by opening an office here, IBM, which already had a business unit in the city, would bring here all its services and products.
It would offer hardware, software, and other services. It would also work with its clients here and link them to its research laboratories. IBM's software products included analytics, managing security and business integration.
“This is an important day for us as we recommit to the Coimbatore market,” he said. Coimbatore was known for its education institutions, and manufacturing and textile units. IBM would offer its products and services to these and the new verticals developing in this region.
The company was now present in 22 cities in the country to provide its services in the domestic market and it would expand to 25 more in a couple of years. Over 60 per cent of the market in the country was outside the four big cities.
“We need to be aligned with the market potential by being in smaller cities.” This investment in expansion would help the company drive its growth faster, he said.
Expansion
The company was expanding in China, Brazil and Africa too. “We are extremely happy with the way India is responding to our growth centres. India's expansion is faster compared to some of the other countries. India is interesting as a market than as a resource pool to us,” he said.
Some of the cities that IBM would be expanding to in the next two years would include Madurai, Tiruchi, Jamshedpur, Raipur, Surat, and Guwahati. On setting up a development centre in Coimbatore, Mr. Mehrotra said IBM was looking at different places for development. It would keep evaluating places to expand.
Speaking about the potential for IT companies, he said that according to a study covering about 2,000 mid-market customers worldwide, including 100 in India, the customers now looked at Information Technology for innovation and customer focus and not just cost reduction.
They wanted a partnering approach and not just a transactional relationship.

If they offer something like 1.25 lk at CBE and 2.75 in Chennai, then there is a problem. This pay difference that you quoted appear reasonable to me.
cbepulikutty June 10th, 2011, 05:54 AM Capgemini to hire 8,000 for delivery centres this year
Mumbai, May 30:
French IT services company Capgemini will hire up to 8,000 people for its delivery operations in India this year, a top company official said.
This is in line with the company's publicly stated vision of having the Indian workforce account for 50 per cent of its overall employee base in the next 2-3 years.
As of March 31, 2011, the €8.7-billion Capgemini group had a total headcount of 1,12,127 employees.
“Last year, we grew our India headcount by around 20 per cent…this year also the HR additions should be in a similar range,” Ms Aruna Jayanthi, Chief Executive Officer of Capgemini India, told Business Line.
Ms Jayanthi is the first lady CEO to head operations of a software services company in India. She was one of the three Indian leaders who was promoted and given global roles in a restructuring exercise by Capgemini earlier this year.
In her earlier role of Global Delivery Officer for Capgemini Outsourcing, Ms Jayanthi was responsible for improving the quality, productivity and profitability of Capgemini's outsourcing operations worldwide.
In addition to recruiting heavily from engineering campuses, Ms Jayanthi said that the company is also on the look out for science graduates. It has had success by taking the ‘off campus' route to further flatten its employee pyramid.
Off-campus hiring
Off-campus hiring refers to the incremental fresher hirings done by IT companies when their need for entry level graduates exceeds the numbers they have picked up during campus recruitment drives. In such cases, IT companies conduct walk-in-interviews of fresh engineers who have not been picked up by any company during on-campus drives.
“Even the off-campus route can throw up high quality candidates if you are careful with the selection procedure. Having said that, if you select one out of four during campus drives, now you may do only one out of 10,” said Ms Jayanthi.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2011, the company has already made net additions of roughly 3,000 persons, taking its employee count to 33,510. Capgemini follows a January to December accounting calendar.
Capgemini, which has about eight delivery centres in India, is now looking to expand into smaller cities.
Its first move in that direction was made couple of years ago when it setup a centre in Salem, Tamil Nadu.
“We have used Salem for providing finance and accounting BPO services to clients and the experience so far has been very positive…the endeavour is to now take this model to other cities in South India,” said Ms Jayanthi.
Hub-and-spoke model
The company wants to operate on a hub-and-spoke model, targeting cities that are ‘just an overnight journey' from Chennai so that it does not have to invest in local management talent.\Apart from servicing overseas customers, Capgemini also works with India-based companies. In November last year, the company had bagged a workshop management system contract from the Indian Railways.

kalyan_erode June 15th, 2011, 01:54 PM Coimbatore, May 25:
The long-awaited government mooted Tidel Park, despite its strategic location and proximity to the airport, has failed to lure IT companies.
This is despite the Coimbatore Hi-Tech Infrastructure Ltd (CHIL) SEZ IT park at Keeranatham Village in Saravanampatti near here and the IT park at the Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) campus house prominent IT companies such as Cognizant Technology Solutions, Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions and CBay Systems among others.
Occupancy level
The Tidel Park houses just one company, nine months after the formal inauguration of the project. Though sources maintain that six-seven companies had confirmed taking up space in the park, no occupant except Payoda Technologies has moved in till date. The occupancy level is pathetic. Payoda Technologies, a Coimbatore-based company, offering off-shore application development services has taken up 17,000 sq ft of space (on the first floor), out of the total built-up area of 1.7 million sq ft.
The Rs 380-cr project, a joint initiative of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, Electronics Corporation of India, Software Technology Parks of India and Tidel Park, Chennai, has come up in a sprawling 9.5 acre plot on Avinashi road, adjoining the Coimbatore Medical College campus. It was probably one of the first projects that the then State Government mooted as early as 2006 to take this industrial hub and tier II destination on the IT map.
The exterior side of the structure now appears complete, but if one were to walk into the building, it can be difficult tracing your way out.
The main entrance leading to the reception area remains incomplete, forcing visitors to take one of the side doors, before following the lights that lead to the long, wide, fully air-conditioned corridor, which wears a deserted look.
Dead investment
Work is under way in the interior side of the building. With the project promoters in no hurry to either complete the task on hand or market the space, the park seems like a dead investment.
We asked a cross-section of smaller IT companies here the reason for not opting to take space in the Tidel Park, only to learn that the lease rental was costly (at Rs 40/sq ft) as compared with private SEZs. ‘Further, there is no ownership and marketing is pathetic,' an industry insider said, referring to Coimbatore Tidel Park.
