Kommandant Mark May 12th, 2004, 12:45 AM Where was the header image yesterday? As I remember, it was some church tower in the photo, with mountains in the backgroud?
Ellatur May 12th, 2004, 04:29 AM can we also request daily banners? or give other forumers chance to make them with their name on it? it would be pretty cool feature along with the rest of the forum and the Urban Photo Contest (can i be the request-a-daily-banner and/or make-a-daily-banner moderator? :) )
SoboleuS May 12th, 2004, 11:49 AM Hello Jan, what you think about these two banners? (first is Krakow made by Kuba, second is Warsaw by drowned.world)

John May 19th, 2004, 10:42 PM I think it would be a good idea to write on the banner what place/city it is because not everyone is reading this thread and sometimes it's not that easy to recognize the place :)
anyway it was a great idea to introduce daily banners :okay:

jada May 20th, 2004, 08:55 AM So I am guessing that Han has created some sort of program which changes the banner for him automatically, once the forum clock turns 12am? Because I am still seeing the Rushmore banner, yet De Snor sees Krakow.

A tribute to world's most respected skyscraper builders: termites!
http://skyscrapercity.com/images/forumheaders/24.jpg
---oooOooo---
Background info:
Have you ever been to a large city and seen a skyscraper? A skyscraper is a very high building designed for people to work or live in. A well-designed skyscraper must be made strong enough to hold up in strong winds and earth tremors. It must be able to have the inside air circulated, and heated or cooled. A lot of special design goes into making a skyscraper.
Termite mounds (or termitaries) are the skyscrapers of the animal world. Some of these mounds are up to 20 feet high (some of the world’s tallest animal mounds)! The builders are termites. Most termites are tiny, soft bodied, white insects that must have a dark moist place to live. Some termites will die if left in the open air for more than a few hours. Most avoid light and can thrive only where there is warmth and high humidity. They must also have fresh moist air. Termites construct their mounds to meet these needs. Their mounds are built with a complicated ventilation system.
Termites use spit and mud to build the hard, thick walls. Very close to the surface of these walls are tiny tunnels. Air is heated by the bodies of the termites and their fungus. This warmed air rises, and tiny tunnels carry the rising warm air close to the surface of the mound. The termitary walls are porous, or have tiny holes. The tiny tunnels are so near the porous surface that cooled, fresh air can actually leak into the inside air and stale air, and other gases can leak out. Thus the mound acts like a giant lung and constantly refreshes the air inside. Amazingly these walls also keep the rain and the heat out!
This air moving system works so well that the temperature inside the mound is kept .at a steady 64° all year- no matter what the temperature is outside. Without ventilation and cooling, the termites would die within hours. Each huge termite mound is built by worker termites. Worker termites also repair the mound, take care of the king and queen, gather food, and tend the eggs. Amazingly, these tiny workers are blind!
Style™ May 24th, 2004, 12:02 PM I knew it! I came here saw it, thought and had a feeling it was a termite mound. Now, I really need to stop watching the Discovery Channel. :D
Very creative one, Jan! :okay:

Monkey June 5th, 2004, 09:03 AM EDIT (I'm availing myself of this possibility because I somehow managed to produce a double post). :D
Well, how wonderful, De Snor! :D But what do you mean by "promising?" :?
I'm on the verge of giving up on this thread; obviously no one sees the need & opportunity to tell people what the SCity banner is showing. :( There may always be a small (or even large!) band of people in the know, recognizing their home turf. :) Yet for the majority of forumers that banner may represent terra incognita. A timely description of the daily banner, however brief and even if "obvious," would make me quite happy. :)
Europa, thank you for telling me retroactively that I most recently was seeing Sevilla. :okay:

Mortar & Pestle June 22nd, 2004, 01:30 AM @ Jo, pretty panos of SE Asia!!! I hope to see one of those in employment very soon.
@ Jan, the Sao Paulo picture is drop-dead gorgeous. Perfect light, perfect saturation, perfect everything. The only thing that is not as good as it could be is the pano. What awful places to crop the picture, in my opinion. One should be able to see the myriad of skyscraper on that belo horizonte and the fascinating lights beaming from the windows. Perhaps shift the cropping a little higher up! If what you're going for is the sleek curvature of the Copan building in the foreground, then the cropping should ideally be done a little lower. It could also be the case that that isn't even your own pano, in which case you can ignore these comments! ;)
Jan June 22nd, 2004, 09:08 AM No worries, we'll just use that picture again some day. :)

btw... I think this website probably belongs to a portuguese girl (LUA=MOON, but LUA is always a female word (like in german, portuguese has "female" and "male" words due to the articles that precede them (in german, der, die, das). I think the website owner found the picture because she only looks for pictures which show a big moon... and she THOUGHT it was Lisboa.
