Awesome!! Looks really progressive:D
The short UOB building is also in its old facade design...

O/T: thats how Merlion Park used to look like? Not that nice. Its so much nicer now, with its tiles and little dock. Also, the restaurants there make the area look better.
Fullerton Hotel also looks deteriorated back then. Now, it is much grander:okay:

I have not been to the Merlion Park since the building of the Esplanade Bridge.

The Waterboat House is now at the fork of Fullerton Road & Esplanade Drive.

I can. I can remember in 1991 when they hadnt finished building it yet and featured it in UOB Bank adverts standing just as tall as OUB I was thinking, "That looks so weird and unreal, now the glory of OUB is spoilt!"

Too bad for the 280m height limit though, but I am right..every 5 years a big one goes up..so always something big to look forward too

1986 - OUB, Swissotel, Temasek Tower (280,226m,230m)
1992 - UOB (280m)
1995 - Republic Plaza (280m)
1996 - Millenia Tower (218m)
2000 - Capital Tower (252m)
2005 - 1 Raffles Quay (245m)
2007/8 - Marina Boulevard apartments (245m)

DamienK
September 15th, 2004, 01:17 PM
Thanks! You can clearly see the building's cantilevered structure, with no columns on the facade. This allowed unobstructed views.

redstone
September 15th, 2004, 01:19 PM
But would that make the core proportionally bigger than other 'normal' buildings?

DamienK
September 15th, 2004, 01:56 PM
Yes, the core is slightly bigger, at 23 m wide, and the concrete core walls are also thicker.

Those are already long gone.

Maybe because they look like slums?

heirloom
October 22nd, 2004, 02:26 PM
not all - along the road with sultan mosque one side is lined with not very prettily refurbished shophouses while the other side still has embarrassingly dilapidated ones.

redstone

Those in front of Gateway, and those around the New 7th Storey Hotel are gone.
Those at Sultan are still there.

Jandok
October 22nd, 2004, 06:34 PM
It's very bad that the shophouses in front of the Gateway have been demolished ... If they would still exist there would be one large shophouse district, including the Arab Street area and the shophouses further south towards Raffles Hotel. This could have been developed into a major attraction. But now, except of Parkview Square, the area in front of the Gateway is empty and boring ... It's the same mistake that Singapore made in Chinatown where the Tanjong Pagar district and the conservation areas further north are interrupted by open space ... :ohno:

RafflesCity
October 22nd, 2004, 09:59 PM
well the shophouses there have given way for the Parkview Square, but where there are potential for restoration or for just leaving things as they are, then I'd favour retaining more shophouses - but no slums please...
