1. As another year begins, I'll be showcasing Hong Kong from many points of view in a new 2010 thread.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0022.jpg
2. Waiting for the bus ...
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0050.jpg
3. A new hotel is born. This is a rejuvenation project, as the neighbourhood is full of garages and appears a bit dirty for an upclass facility.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0105.jpg
4. Meanwhile, across the street, a debate rages over what to do with this disused site. More skyscrapers along the water's edge?
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0103.jpg
5. The views would be quite nice though, albeit blocking the residents further inland. Development needs to be more balanced these days.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0118.jpg
6. Hong Kong is a very hilly city. Somehow, the skyscrapers know their place and scream to be seen.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0148.jpg
7. Traditional markets are still alive and well. Although a bit chaotic, they are still cheaper than the supermarket.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0255.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0259.jpg

http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_0272.jpg
12. The public's growing appetite for nostalgia continues. In this exhibition, visitors find menus and memorabilia from a recently-closed traditional Chinese restaurant.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_9841.jpg
13. For aviation fans, some old plane tickets ...
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_9848.jpg
14. Watson's is still around today!
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_9853.jpg
15. What is this British red double decker doing on our streets?
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0109/IMG_9880.jpg
16. Our homes are getting taller and taller. Each new tower seems to be outdoing the previous one. Do we need to live so high up? Soon 60/F would offer no views.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0115/IMG_2622.jpg
17. Hong Kong's urban planners need to revisit the importance of maintaining proper density and lively streets. The older communities tend to do a much better job, albeit still dense but lower.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0115/IMG_2625.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0115/IMG_2627.jpg
19. There is a constant call to redevelop seemingly young buildings. 40 years is not exactly a very old building if maintained properly. This one would look quite nice if it had a wash or a fresh coat of paint.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2642.jpg
20. The older parts of town are slowly being torn down for more tall residential blocks. How do they fit into the established urban fabric?
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2647.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2650.jpg
22. Chinese New Year is fast approaching. Time to stock up on red pockets!
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2652.jpg
23. Being a valued Cathay Pacific customer over the years, spending tens of thousands of US dollars on their flights, I don't recall ever seeing this type of baggage box before!
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2656.jpg
24. Dryers are not common in Hong Kong. The most environmental way is to hang your laundry out to dry by sunlight.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2660.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2670.jpg
26. Hong Kong now has a sizeable Thai community, and Thai helpers are valid options for the busy family.

http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2719.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2720.jpg
29. Eating out is not so expensive if you know the right places. A rice dish with some meat costs only about USD 4. Why bother cooking?
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2736.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2762.jpg
31. You can also pick up a dessert along the way home!
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2739.jpg
32. Today's local markets have realized the competitive threat of supermarkets. So they have prettied up their wares to give more aesthetic appeal.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2751.jpg
33. Recycling definitely needs to get more popular as we tackle the pollution problem. Here is a price list by material type for the old ladies who collect garbage for re-sale.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2781.jpg
34. Although the boat people community is getting smaller and smaller, typhoon shelters still exist, and offer a parking spot for those who are not on duty. These don't look anything like the family sampan fishing for a living.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_3155.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_3188.jpg
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_3248.jpg
37. Throughout 2010, I will bring more nostalgia, modernity, and contrast.

Welcome to Hong Kong.
sandra1125 January 19th, 2010, 08:52 AM I love Hongkong!!
People there are very warm-hearted, and I like the Ocean Park. Me and my little brother had a good time there last summer~~we bought lots of clothes and kinds of interesting things!!

hkskyline February 21st, 2010, 06:43 PM 40. Fotanian is an open-studio art exhibition that forms part of a series of separate cultural events to kick-start 2010.

41. To make a garbage station look good, the front was decorated with a forest scene so it doesn't look anything like its function. This photo depicts the arrangement.

51. Hong Kong is a very safe city. To be more safe, many older buildings and government housing are equipped with these metal gates in addition to the main door.

58. There are quite a lot of photo-taking opportunities with the art displays. The open house was immensely popular and I purposedly didn't want to capture the crowds too much. You have to think about the setting on the back of your heads.

66. War-time bombs are dug up every now and then with so much construction happening in the city. Workers are evacuated and the bomb is set off in a controlled explosion. Work then continues ... very routine.

Heritage Preservation
80. With an ever-growing movement to preserve what is left of our historic buildings, even dilapidated ones, an award at the Berlin Film Festival prompted huge turnout at Wing Lee Street, where Echoes of the Rainbow was filmed.

89. But development is approaching their doors.
http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0227/IMG_5846.jpg
90. Wing Lee Street is a mix of retail on ground floors and residences on top. But the shops seem to be gone now, while clothes still hang on the floors above. This street is slated for redevelopment. With the outcry to preserve the old buildings, perhaps the government will do a re-think on how to proceed?

http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/2010/0116/IMG_2656.jpg
About five years ago, that box cost about HK$1,500.
It's probably one of the most expensive baggage you'll ever find.
It wasn't me, but one of my friends flew with me from HK back to JFK who appeared to be overweight on her check-in baggages.
CX didn't allow any overweight baggages even if you pay the different, but made her repack the additional weight into the "courtesy" baggage box just like the one showed above.
At the end, the box was in pretty bad shape after the 16 hours flight. This one is surprisingly looking good.

When I flew back to HKG from Sydney in 2008, I was quite overweight and they wouldn't let me check my bag because it was not safe for airport workers beyond a certain weight. As I was paying J fares at the time, the lady went to the back and got the original red-white-blue bag for me to pack the overflow, and didn't charge me a cent for it. Nevertheless, upon arriving in HK I fetched my "priority baggge" red-white-blue bag and dashed for the train.

Did you have one overweight checked baggage or two?? My friends had two.
And of course, J class could make a whole different.
But you got a red-white-blue in Sydney, that's classic.

I had 2 bags that were each under the maximum airport-allowed weight. But total weight was over the allowance, but no fees were charged.
