That is a huge shame...these buildings are wonderful & they would be some of the treasured sights for the country. :ohno:

Marathaman January 20th, 2010, 03:54 PM I really wish I could find out what Shaniwar Wada looked like before it burned down.'
All I can find are tantalizing descriptions
The important buildings in the palace includes the Thorlya Rayancha Diwankhana (Marathi:The court reception hall of the eldest royal, meaning Baji Rao I), Naachacha Diwankhana (Dance Hall), and Juna Arsa Mahal (Old Mirror Hall).
Since the buildings were destroyed in the fire of 1828, only descriptions of the living areas of the fort are available. All the state halls in the buildings are said to have doorways with exquisitely carved teak arches, with ornamental teardrop teak pillars shaped like Suru (cypress tree) trunks supporting the ceilings, which were covered with beautiful teak tracery, carved creepers and flowers. Exquisite glass chandeliers hung from the ceilings. The floors were made of highly polished marble, arranged in a mosaic pattern and adorned with rich Persian rugs. The walls contained paintings with scenes from the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The buildings are said to have been designed and constructed by many well-known artisans, including Shivaram Krishna, Devaji, Kondaji Sutar, Morarji Patharwat Bhojraja (an inlay-work expert from Jaipur) and Ragho (a painter).
One of the buildings in the Shaniwarwada complex was seven storeys high. It is said that the spire of the Sant Dnyaneshwar temple at Alandi, 17 km away, could be seen from the uppermost terrace of this building.

About 2 1/2years back, Maneka Gandhi's PFA did a fundraiser in Delhi ( they choose a different theme every year) , selling etchings and engravings, all atleast 100 years old. It was a fabulous collection, including some J C Daniels as well. Needless to say these were out of reach of those like me with a limited budget. I could though pick up some steel engravings of British Raj, Will post here later.
Do you also collect these?

It might amuse you to know that my great great grandfather, James Barton drew the original drawing for this lithograph.
He was a Bombay Artillery Officer between 1811 and 1827 and he drew at least 27 of these forts or locations. We know this because 27 have survived as lithographs in this series.
Here's a blog post I made about one of the other forts he drew at Mahuli
http://sepoysgriffins.blogspot.com/2009/10/hill-fort-of-mhowle.html
He spent the 1817 to 1818 war with the Mahrattas stationed in the area immediately below the ghats in the Konkan, and was trying to prevent Mahratta raids down the ghats. The Mahrattas were trying to attack the recruiting villages in the Konkan where most of the Bombay Sepoys came from in the British Bombay army.
Sadly for lovers of the old forts in the area, he was involved in capturing several near Nasik, some of which he subsequently pulled down to prevent them being re-used.

Hello,
Do you think that this image is of the river at Callian or Kalyan as it is called today?
It was where many of the meetings between the Bombay and Peshwa representatives took place.
What is the hill (fort?) in the back ground called?
I am working on the history of the many expeditions, battles etc. in this area at places like Bhow Mullen, which is not far inland from here.
During the 1730 to 1817 people this plain was a highly contested area, with the Mahrattas often coming very close to defeating the British completely near here.
For me this picture is fascinating if it is Kalyan, because the modern city that you can see in Google Earth is much larger than the old city, and it appears from descriptions from the time that there were many more forests in the area than there are now.

Hi Nick
This is the city of Pune. The hill in the foreground is the Parvati temple built by Nanasaheb Peshwa, and the river is probably the confluence of Mula and Mutha rivers.
I'm not sure about the flat-topped hill in the background. Maybe somebody more familiar with the local geography can tell.

DeMorgan April 5th, 2010, 08:19 PM Hello Marathaman,
I had not realised that the rivers in Pune where that large. I thought it must be further down in the Konkan.
I am aware that there are several lakes in the city but I thought they were more recent than the events portrayed.
These pictures are often extremely accurate. I have been working on several other pictures from the British Library showing places in Kerala.
My son and I went in search of the location of one particular image, and after quite a hunt we found it. Not only that, when we got to the correct spot we found by the side of the track a really comfortable natural rock sticking out of the grass.
We had obviously found the place the artist had sat.
See
http://malabardays.blogspot.com/2007/10/40-foot-road-day-7.html
The story has a twist, because the artist had drawn two views on a single sheet of paper and merged them.

ashwa July 24th, 2010, 04:53 PM An oil painting which depicts the royal procession at the Delhi Durbar in 1903. At the head is the British Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon with his wife, followed by the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, and then the rulers of Hyderabad and Mysore princely states together. This durbar, or royal court, was held in honor of Edward VII's ascent to the British throne. Edward could not attend and sent his brother, the Duke of Connaught, to represent him.
