The chimnies of the lignite fired power stations at Maritza are the tallest structures in Bulgaria. But are these the only 300m+ chimnies in Bulgaria? Or does other power plants in Bulgaria also have chimnies taller than 250 metres. If yes, which?

I think only SSP can help you on this, because while there are plenty of tall chimneys around Bulgaria, I don't think their heights are common knowledge.
Although if you are looking specifically for 250m+ I guess there can't be that many around.

Wikipedia has a good list of thermal plants for your research.

According to Wiki, there are 4 chimneys taller than 300m:

Chimney #2 of Maritsa 2 Power Plant - 325 m
Chimney #4 of Maritsa 2 Power Plant - 325 m
Chimney #1 of Maritsa 1 Power Plant - 325 m
Chimney of Aurubis Plant in Pirdop - 325 m
Then we have 6 Radio masts between 205 m and 302 m.
Tv Tower Ruse - 204m
Tv Tower Kopitoto Sofia - 184 m
etc..

The tallest habitable building in Bulgaria is Hotel Rodina in Sofia - 104 m.
:cheers:

Yes, indeed :)

Btw, when you're talking about factory "chimneys", they're called smokestacks. Only houses have chimneys ;)
Maybe JloKyM can change the title..

Also, did you know that untilk the 1960s, the tallest man-made structure in Europe was in Vakarel? It's the radio transmitted there, built in the 1930s when the predecessor of Radio Bulgaria was created to air the Bulgarian point of view throughout Westen Europe. They had programs in German, French, and English.

This is not true. At least the Eiffel tower is older and taller (and it is man-made and in Europe) so... and there were probably others as well.

The Vakarel Blaw-Knox Mast is just 216 metres tall. The higher value resulted in a translation error. Nevertheless an impressionant structure, from which kind none exist in my home country Germany!

What is the correct name of the smelter with its 325 metres tall smokestack at Pirdop? According Wikimapia ( http://wikimapia.org/6198774/Cumerio-Med-copper-smelter-and-refinery ) it is called "Cumerio Med copper smelter and refinery" while according JloKyM it belongs to Arubis plant. When was this smokestack built? Is it from same type as those of Maritza Power Plant? Has someone pictures?

I found some other facilities with tall chimnies in Bulgaria

* Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant
* Bobov Dol Power Plant
* Varna Power Plant

Does someone know the height of their chimnies?

After 'Norddeutscheaffinerie AG' bought 'Cumerio Med' in 2007 (I think...) they renamed themselves to Aurubis (the name means 'Red gold') and the plant in Pirdop automatically became part of the Aurubis family . That is why you can see both names. Older sources simply aren't updated.

The plant was built in 1955-1958 so this is the time span the smokestack was built too. This is appr. the time Maritza Iztok was built so one could suppose that they are of the same type... Still - I can't say for sure.

On http://www.industcards.com/st-coal-bulgaria.htm there are pictures of further power plants in Bulgaria. How tall are their chimneys?

The Wikipedia-List unfortunately does not contain the height of many chimneys in Bulgaria, only that of Maritsa Power Station, Pirdop Smelter and Bobov Dol Power Station.
