IOC Gives Athens All-Clear for August Games

Wed 12 May, 2004 12:47

By Karolos Grohmann

ATHENS (Reuters) - Olympic officials banished long-standing fears that Athens would not be ready for August's Games, giving the Greek capital the green light on Wednesday.

Denis Oswald, the International Olympic Committee's chief inspector, had repeatedly warned organizers about delays in building facilities but he said his confidence was now sky-high.

"In the past we had doubts. I am very happy to report that all these doubts have disappeared," Oswald told reporters after a final three-day inspection that included talks with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and Athens Games officials.

"We had a lot of yellow or red spots before, indicating some projects were at risk," Oswald said. "In construction now, nearly all is green.

"No single project is at risk. Everything will be delivered on time. A full test on a Games scale will be possible," he added. "I am very confident."

The Greeks have endured withering criticism about the pace of their preparations for the Games that begin on August 13.

Security precautions came under the spotlight last week when three small bombs exploded without causing casualties near an Athens police station. Greek police blamed the attack on local radicals who have staged similar bombings.

Despite the bombing, Oswald found nothing to criticize in a one-billion dollar security effort that includes the involvement of NATO. The amount is nearly four times the amount spent on the 2000 Sydney Games. "It (the bombing) was a very local activity," Oswald said. "It happens from time to time. It did not happen in a secured Olympic area. This can happen everywhere (in the world)."

SLIDING ROOF

"It does not effect our assessment on security."

In a sign of their new-found confidence, Athens organizers admitted during Oswald's visit that they had wasted the first three years of preparations, mainly due to political infighting about the awarding of major projects.

Oswald visit started on Monday when builders successfully began sliding a huge steel roof over the main Olympic stadium -- one of the IOC's biggest concerns.

Athens Olympics chief Gianna Angelopoulos said organizers had made up for the lost time.

"Athens has won back three years of lost time...it's a fact that we are completing a seven-year project in four years," Angelopoulos told Oswald.

"We had promised that Greece was fit for the Games and we are keeping this promise."

More than half the venues, as well as major infrastructure projects including new train and tram lines, are still weeks from completion, unlike previous Games when most preparations were in place months before the opening ceremony.

Builders are still working round the clock and the Athens landscape changes daily as projects are completed.

The erection of the first arch above the stadium to hold the 18,000-tonsteel and carbon panel structure was a dramatic new addition to the city's skyline.

Over the coming days, the second arch will also be moved into position at the opposite end of the stadium so the latticed blue translucent roof can cover the 75,000-seat arena.

As well as protecting the stadium from rain, the roof's carbon panels will provide protection against summer temperatures and has broadcasting and surveillance cameras attached to it.

LOL @ poor old Cupie the Cucumber.

I saw Gianna Angelopoulos on T.V. early this morning and she was sprouting the number of venues on schedule. Sounded good.

Wish my Grandmother was alive. She was Greek and would have loved all of this. :)

I could not care less about the Olympics. The only thing I like watching is the women's diving, and then the only good contestants are the chinese! Oh man. They are the best. I could marry any one of those beautiful girls ..

I heard the pool in Athens doesn't have a roof? That pretty much sums it up. Let's bring on the best roofless-pool olympics ever. Good job guys. Who needs roofs anyway, that's what I always say.

you realise of course the media is playing it that the IOC can no longer criticise Athens, it's simply too late and wouldn't do anything now, so now they talk-up the games to generate Olympic hype which has been completely and totally absent from the 2004 Olympics to date.

I think they should take 2 blood samples of every medal winner, maybe even every athlete if it can be funded and keep them. In 10 years or so, they can be tested again, and the medals revoked if a positive sample is found with the hopefully improved detection abilities. At least that way, they know they will eventually get found out and it should put them off.

Having the 2 samples, means one could be kept in some secure vault or something to prevent the chances of tampering with the other one.

Funny you say that. sydney was one of a very small number of cities that had an indoor pool. Also athens has more than one pool for the games. the others are indoors. Say what you want anout it, it doesnt change the fact that aussie, brith\ish and american media have trashed athens to the point where it was criticised by the ioc for the shit they spread

but now an indoor pool is expected, especially if Athens can manage to build a covered main stadium (which will now become an expectation too) - covering a pool should be small fry...

Sounds good in theory, except for the fact anybody who wants to go take a look can see all the venues are finished (or 99% finished) so maybe what they are saying is true. :)

As for the pool, Barcelona didn't have a roof either, yeah it totally destroyed their games. :|

Come on guys, it's really not that big of a deal.... Plus we have an indoor pool. (diving and other events will take place there)
