An Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) survey has revealed that over 55 per cent potential tourists have preferred North Indian tourist destinations to usher in New Year 2011.

The survey of 3,500 tourists was conducted in 10 major cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, :banana:Thiruvananthapuram :banana: and Ahmedabad. Almost 35 per cent of potential travellers said they preferred to visit coastal destinations like Goa, Puducherry, Kerala, :banana:Thiruvananthpuram:banana: and Rameshwaram.

Ten per cent desired to visit areas like Ooty, Mahabaleshwar, Jaipur and Mysore.

Among the North Indian destinations favoured by those surveyed include Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Nainital, Kullu, Manali, Mussoorie, Dalhousie, Kufri, Kashmir Valley, Chandigarh, Panchkula and Udaipur.

ASSOCHAM said hotels and restaurants in these tourist hot-spots are recording a massive business boom during the New Year festive season owing to the improved economic situation in the country.

Hoteliers said the harsh winter this year in Europe has also helped India record an improved performance this December as more foreigners are flocking to India instead of Europe where December has traditionally been one of the busiest times of the year for the tourism industry.

Releasing the findings of the survey, ASSOCHAM secretary general, D.S. Rawat said the steady increase in hotel occupancy mostly in North India and other traditional tourist destinations has also helped by the festival season when more people go for holidays. “The festive season and an increase in domestic tourism should be given credit for this surge in hotel occupancy and the hotels are cashing in on the increased spending power of the individuals and buoyant festive mood,” he said.

ASSOCHAM said the upsurge in number of tourists has resulted in 35-40 per cent increase in tariffs for hotel accommodations. “Food and beverage costs are also running up by nearly 20-25 per cent. Almost all hotel owners have boosted their prices by significant margin as the tourists jostle to enjoy the New Year fever,” Mr. Rawat added.

ASSOCHAM said the Central and State governments have also realised the significant revenue realisation potential of the tourism sector and are giving increasing priority to the industry.

Despite having neither a real mermaid, nor a slow-motion Manisha Koirala, Kovalam manages to awe Kerala’s young immigrants

Thiruvananthapuram has changed as a city in the last decade. From being the temple-infested, hartal (strikes)-crazy Communist capital of Kerala, it has slowly morphed into an IT hub of sorts. Several large Indian software companies have set up shop in Kariavattom, a suburb to the north of the city, and with that, for the first time in the city’s history, large numbers of people from north of Hebbal flyover arrived. These weren’t families. These were college freshers with jobs in IT companies.

Kovalam, unlike Goa, does not feel like an auditorium with several seats reserved for VIPs. The big five-star hotels do have their own private stretches of sand but the wide, crescent-shaped beach that’s open to everyone feels like the real deal.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) here has resumed the monthly launch of sounding rockets to conduct studies of the upper atmosphere.

A press note issued by VSSC here said RH200 sounding rockets would be launched from TERLS every month.

The first launch in the series took place on Wednesday evening.

The station had been launching sounding rockets regularly on the third Wednesday of every month. However, over the years, the launches were conducted based on need.

Atmospheric behaviour

The station is involved in scientific experiments to study atmospheric behaviour using balloons and sounding rockets. This includes university collaboration programmes where student payload experiment programmes and rocket development programmes are undertaken, according to the press note.

The monthly launches will be of interest to scientists, students, and to the general public who can visit the Space Centre.

Rs.50 crore for tourism facilities

Project includes development of new destinations and circuits

Kerala Tourism has been granted Rs.50 crore for basic infrastructure development at tourist destinations and development of new tourist destinations and circuits as part of its efforts to attract more tourists to the State.

Under the scheme, improvement of basic facilities at Kovalam, Ponmudi, Varkala, Ashtamudi, Alappuzha, and Wayanad will be taken up. Development of new destinations and circuits such as the eastern corridor of Malappuram and Kozhikode districts, Nila, Vypeen, Paravoor, Thalassery, and Wagamon has been included in the project.

Official sources said the government had sanctioned an additional amount of Rs.50 crore in the annual Plan 2011-12 for the scheme through supplementary demands for grants. The Rs.50 crore is in addition to the Rs.107-crore budget allocation to the tourism sector this year.

The project will be completed this financial year itself, Minister for Tourism A.P. Anil Kumar said

The scheme has been taken up as tourism authorities are of the view that existing infrastructure at tourist destinations needs to be developed along with new destinations and circuits with minimum facilities to attract more tourists.

The eastern corridor of Malappuram and Kozhikode districts will be developed as a tourist circuit by linking Nilambur, Wandoor, and Tusharagiri in the foothold of the Western Ghats. A cultural tourist circuit with Nila as the focus, a heritage tourist circuit for Fort Vypeen, and an eco-tourism project for Wayanad that attracts large numbers of tourists from abroad and within the country have been included in the scheme. A detailed master plan will be prepared for the Nila cultural tourist circuit.

Town squares at Paravur, the gateway of Muziris, the helipad atop the laterite cliff at Varkala that overlooks the Arabian Sea, more facilities for tourists who come for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha, and paragliding and other adventure sports at Wagaom figure in the projects identified to the taken up.

The government has already come up with a blue print for giving a facelift to the famed beach resort at Kovalam. A Rs.10-crore drinking water project would be implemented with the assistance of the Kerala Water Authority to solve the shortage of drinking water in the beach resort, sources said. After witnessing long years of neglect, the Ponmudi hill resort in the district is poised to get a facelift with the State Tourism Department announcing a couple of ambitious projects for the destination.

The scenic upper region of the hill station now lacks even basic facilities for travellers.

The projects which were announced by Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar here the other day include a tourist amenity centre and a new guest house at the hill station.

‘’It’s sad that Ponmudi, which attracts tourists in large numbers, lacks sufficient facilities, especially at the Upper Sanatorium area,’’ Anilkumar said.

‘’The Upper Sanatorium lacks a shelter for travellers to escape the rains or a refreshment stall. The new projects will boost tourist arrivals to the scenic hills and we will ensure that the projects are completed in time,’’ he said.

Anil Kumar and Forest Minister K B Ganesh Kumar had recently visited the hill station to plan the development projects for the destination.

The amenity centre, conceived in an attractive design, will come up at Upper Ponmudi. The centre will have an information centre, a food court, toilets and a lobby for the travellers to take rest. A shop selling Kerala souvenirs will be a highlight of the amenity centre. The centre will be set up at a cost of ` 90 lakh.

Guest House

The four-star guest house will be set up after demolishing the old government guest house at Lower Ponmudi which is in a dilapidated state.

Christened ‘Ponmudi Palace’, the structure is planned in an elegant design with modern comforts for tourists. Sixteen rooms and six suites will be available at the Guest House. The multi-storeyed building will have all the facilities of a four-star hotel.

The entrance lobby and porch will be on the ground floor. A multi-cuisine restaurant has also been planned on the ground floor and a speciality restaurant and coffee shop will be set up on the first floor. The ground floor and first floor will have six rooms and two suites each.

The second floor will have a banquet hall, besides four rooms and two suites. Service area, staff rest rooms, storage and kitchen are planned on the basement floor.

The four-storeyed guest house is estimated to cost ` 4 crore.

Kovalam to get sunset viewpoint


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kovalam, the beach known for scenic sunsets, is getting an ideal location for viewing this natural phenomenon. The Tourism Department has kick-started the beautification work of Edakkallu, located between the Light House and Eve’s beaches.
Edakkallu, which offers an enchanting view of the sunset, is now in a pathetic state and prone to accidents.
The beautification of Edakkallu is being carried out as part of the ‘Destination development initiative’ recently announced by the Tourism Department. Around ` 49 lakh is the estimated cost of the work. The area will be developed into a rock garden. Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar inaugurated the beautification works at 5 pm on Tuesday.
One of the ideal locations for sunset viewing, Edakkallu, ironically, is in a hazardous state now. Rocks are slippery and the location is isolated. Currently, there is no restriction on entry. The Tourism Department feels the current location of the lifeguard station is an eyesore, taking into account the aesthetics of the place.
The beautification of the over one-and-a-half acre of land includes cleaning up of the area, setting up a rock garden, redesigning the lifeguard station, establishment of a checkpost at the entrance and installation of eco-sensitive lighting.
One interesting part of the makeover is the introduction of bio-fencing. The rock garden will be marked using bio-fencing by planting Pandanus (screw pine). The Tourism Department will construct steps leading to the area. A bamboo checkpost will be used to restrict entry. Apart from bio-fencing using Pandanus, Euphorbia plants will be planted for beautification. Furniture made out of stone will be made for seating arrangements.
The highlights of Tourism Department’s ‘Destination development initiatives’ are a drinking water scheme for Kovalam, four-star guest house and tourist amenity centre at Ponmudi, edutainment-cum-leisure enclave at Akkulam tourist village and beautification of the helipad area at Varkala

The Agasthyakoodam pilgrimage 2012 will be held from January 15 to February 20 this year. Agasthyakoodam

(Agastya mountain) located 70 kms from Trivandrum is the second highest peak in Kerala. It is an ecologically rich forest with rare herbs, medicinal plants, flowers, birds, reptiles, flies and animals.


Every year the Agasthyakoodam pilgrimage/trekking is conducted by the Kerala Forest Department starting from the Makaravilakku day till Sivarathri. As per the Indian mythology, Sage Agasthya lived in this mountain. This year the pilgrimage days are restricted to 37.Only 100 people are permitted to enter the forest in a day. The trekkers will be made into groups of 15 members with a guide for entering the ecological sensitive forest. Liqour, Drugs, Cooking inside the forest etc are not allowed. Passes which costs Rs. 350 are available from Forest Office at PTP Nagar. Only 3700 passes are available and will be alloted in first come first serve basis.

Endowed with natural

A long shoreline with world-famous beaches, monuments, backwater stretches, a lush hill station, wildlife, and a rich cultural heritage make Thiruvananthapuram a must-see destination on the itinerary of tourists arriving in God's Own Country.

The wooded highlands of the Western Ghats in the eastern and north-eastern borders of the district have given some of the most enchanting picnic spots and a bunch of places of interest. Named after Ananthapadmanabha, the city is home to many ancient temples, including the landmark Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

The palm-fringed beaches of Kovalam were instrumental in finding Kerala a place on the world tourism map decades ago. Kovalam, which has got all the trappings of a popular beach destination with three crescent-shaped beaches, golden sands, and rocky promontories, is one of the popular destinations of tan-seekers.

Foreign tourists, whether arriving from the U.K. and other countries on chartered flights or by other means, make it a point to make the beach the first stopover of their holidays in Kerala. The charming old Halcyon Castle and the landmark 35-metre red-striped Vizhinjam lighthouse amid the palm-engulfed Kurumkal Hill add to the beauty of the lovely settings of the golden sands of the beach and the shimmering sea.

Thiruvallam, with its serene backwaters and nearby Pozhikara and Edayar, attracts many tourists as it offers a peep into village life and activities in the coir-manufacturing units. The 200-year-old Parasurama temple dedicated to Sree Parasurama, the mythological creator of the State, is en route.

Varkala

A serenely beautiful destination and pilgrimage centre, Varkala is an hour-and-a-half drive from the capital city.

As the seaside destination offers more privacy to tan-seekers, Varkala has over the years emerged as an alternative destination to Kovalam and attracts repeat tourists in large numbers.

The calm and secluded Papanasham beach, loved by many tourists, has a red laterite cliff running along its entire stretch.

The resorts and the restaurants that dot the cliff top offer the tourists a spectacular view of the sunset. The adjacent Thiruvambady Beach (black sand beach) is a favourite of those looking for solitude. The Kappil beach, 8 km north of Varkala, is the confluence of the sea, a river, and a backwater. The Priyadarshni Boat Club of the District Tourism Promotion Council offers boating facilities at Kappil.

The final resting place of the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru is near Varkala, atop the hill of Sivagiri. The 2,000-year-old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple attracts tourists and pilgrims from all over the State. The beautification of the helipad area is to be taken up at a cost of Rs.1.36 crore. Tensile structures, seating arrangements for tourists, e-toilets, and an open-air theatre that can seat 200 people will be built. Boat services from Kappil to Hariharapuram are on the anvil. Arivalam and Rathikkal, seaside tourist spots, will be developed as part of the destination development plan.

The Shanghumughom beach is another favourite picnic spot and a haunt of sunset watchers. Veli, where the Veli lake meets the Arabian Sea, is a picnic spot.

Another picnic spot with boating facilities, the Akkulam tourist village is where the young and old flock to in the weekends. A children's park, a swimming pool, and an indoor music fountain are the main attractions here. Boating facilities are to resume once the dredging of the lake is completed and water weeds are removed.

An edutainment-cum-leisure enclave is to come up on 2.5 acres of land atop the hillock in the village. An activity zone, a creative zone, workshops, a skill game arcade, a fun zone, an indoor golf simulator, and a LED dance floor will come up in the enclave in stages. A 2.5-m-wide walkway, a cycle track, and four electronics skill games area are to be provided.

Ponmudi

Ponmudi, an idyllic hill station, is 915 metres above the sea level.

Narrow, winding pathways and cool, green environs make the destination unique. Along with a beautiful array of mountain flowers, exotic butterflies, and small rivulets, Ponmudi offers excellent opportunities for trekkers.

A four-star guest house will come up on 40 cents of land owned by Kerala Tourism in the hill station.

The Rs.4-crore guest house will have 24 rooms and will have all modern facilities, including a banquet hall and a board room. The children's park on the location is to be refurbished as part of the destination development plan.

A tourist amenity centre will be set up at the upper sanatorium that offers a panoramic view.

A fishing boat named "Sachu" parked here. These type of boats are locally known as plywoods and generally used for fishing at night. A light is lit on the boat, which is said to attract fish at night. When you see towards sea, from the beaches of this region at night, you will find that beautiful view of sea , decorated with lot of "dots" of lights which actually comes from these plywoods.

Work on tourism projects in Kerala commences :)

The Kerala Tourism Department has commenced work on the Rs 200 crore Veli Amusement Park in Thiruvananthapuram. The project is being implemented with private participation on a BOT basis. The amusement park will be developed on the 19 acres of land adjacent to the Veli tourist village. According to official sources, the state Department of Law has cleared the land lease agreement, to be signed between Kerala Tourism and Southern Fun City, an Abu Dhabi-based group, which is executing the project.
The amusement park will come up on three plots, including the one on the right side of the Veli-Shanghumughom Road. The Tourism Department has constructed a two-lane model road with pathways leading from the All Saint's College Junction and VSSC Road to the Veli Tourist Village at a cost of Rs 4.2 million and has relocated the 66 kV line of the KSEB passing through the land where a parking lot for the visitors is coming up. The 66 kV line has been replaced with underground cables and a dedicated line at a cost of Rs 8 million to provide uninterrupted power supply to the park.
The amusement park, which is to be built on international standards with imported equipments, will have a dry park and water theme park. A master plan has been prepared with the assistance of Portico Leisure Ltd, UK. Andrew Caldwell, a leading designer of amusement parks, will supervise the construction of the park.

Wooden cottages
The construction work on the 15 eco-friendly wooden cottages, being built by Kerala Tourism in the picturesque hill resort of Ponmudi, is on in full swing. The cottages, which are being constructed at a cost of around Rs 11.3 million, are designed on the lines of the existing nine granite cottages. The first of the 15 cottages have been completed.

Golf course
Kerala Tourism has decided to develop a Golf course in Kochi at a cost of Rs 2.4 million. The golf course will be located at the backwater front at Bolghatty. The golf course will primarily cater to foreign tourists who, according to officials, visit Kochi the maximum.

Upcoming projects
Herala Tourism has decided to construct a solid waste treatment plant at Nadayara, Varkala, the coastal town of Thiruvananthapuram, at a cost of Rs 5 million.
The department will also take up projects for the conservation of temples in north Kerala and, specifically, the conservation of forts in Kasaragod district.
Besides, Kerala Tourism is improving tourism facilities at Kumarakom, a famous tourist destination in the state. The project consists of the deepening of canal structures at various places, the improvement of four road stretches, development of parking area near the boat terminal at Kavanattinkara, and provision of parking area for tourist vehicles at the lake shore near Assarimattom colony. The work will be implemented by the L.S.G (Water Resources), District Panchayat Division, Kottayam. An amount of Rs 15 million has been earmarked for the project.

Move to include Vellayani lake in national lake conservation plan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KCSTE) is ready with a fresh proposal for the conservation of Vellayani lake and the rich biodiversity of the region. The proposal is to protect Vellayani lake and the wetlands in the area by including them in the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) formulated by the ministry of environment and forests.

"A proposal was made early last year and now, after making required changes, the proposal will be re-submitted," KCSTE Wetland Technology Unit coordinator Hari Narayanan told TOI here.

The proposal submitted by KSCSTE last year focused on the need to document the agricultural biodiversity of the region around Vellayani lake, which also supports the livelihood of people engaged in fishing, floriculture and agricultural production. It reported 92 species of wetland birds, including migratory species and 37 species of fishes endemic to the lake, including exotic varieties.

The proposal to conserve Vellayani lake and to include it in the NLCP was mooted by the Save Vellayani Lake Campaign.

"Currently, the land area adjoining the Vellayani lake is only about 550 acres, including 256 acres under independent farmers and 300 acres under Agriculture College. The lake spreads to around 300 acres and it is facing depletion due to sand mining and illegal constructions," says Anil Kumar P Y, coordinator of Save Vellayani Lake Campaign.
