Welcome T-JAPS, enjoy the forums!

I like that structure very much.. a fusion of Lao and French architecture. It has a very 'unpolished' feel up close actually.

I wonder if that light brown color on it is from the sand/dirt on the streets. In Bangkok dirty buildings are black, in Laos they are red/brown :)

Weerl, that's Pratuxay (Pratoochai) used to be the monumment of Anonymous soldiers ... using cement whcih was supposed to used for the airport construction ... but the new regive has removed the sign of Royal Lao Armed Forces out and replace with Thepphanom sign ...

What a beautiful and magical place ... both the city and the country. Jo, you've actually been there? Man, I envy you!

Yes, Vientiane could be spelled 'visa-run' for me ;) I rather go there than to Malaysia or Cambodia, despite the cost of entrance.

It is a very peaceful place and I hope it can stay that way even after increased tourism and modernism.

not really, even they are the same group of people but they are different kingdoms, the Kingdom of Lan Na (Chiang Mai) and the Kingdom of Lan Xang (Laung Prabang), they sometimes united and shared the same kings or queens.

I thought Luang Prabang was in the Lanna Kingdom?

Odonto

No, it is in Lan Xang kingdom (million elephants kingdom). Lan Xang is also the name that use for Mekong river when it runs through Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.

Yeah you both are right, going to Laung Prabang is like watching a good film that just can’t be told. The whole place is filled with the smell of living history. It just like U have gone into a time machine and then came out to the olden day northern Thailand, or Is it just nostalgic part of me?

All of Luang Prabang is tiny, built as it is on a small peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan. Yet even this tiny space has a mountain in it and the city is surrounded by mountains which sweep cool air down at night giving relief from the heat of the day.

I went there twice, and always wanted to go back there again.

Luang Prabang at late night is downright cold!

BTW, I think you guys missed what I was saying ;)
I might live in a rich and modern country but I'm still in many ways jealous of the lifestyle they have there.
= some things are better and some are worse of course, but the zest of it is that we in the west have lost some social qualities in the transition to where we are now.

I went to Luang Prabang last year with friends for Songkran holidays....SO GREAT!! The parade and festivities were like I imagine Thailand was decades ago....so wonderful, peaceful...fun.....people actually sprinkling water (not shooting super water canons :) ) Air super clean......and temples and markets and sidewalk cafes wonderful......"L'Elephant" restaurant cool and delicious

We stayed at a nice little hotel called "Villa Santi" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/speedracer7/Other/Santi.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/speedracer7/Other/santi1.jpg

We got up really early to make merit by giving food to the monks. I was so surprised because there were hundreds of monks....I bought about four hundred chocolate bars and actually ran out because of the never ending lines! The next morning I was prepared....

I really like Luang Prabang and hope it keeps its World Heritage character...such a nice break from the fast city.

My friend and I went to LP and VT a couple of years ago by Van from BKK , It was the best place among my 3 neighbouring destinations ,but so strange that I cannot told why , LP has no world wonder , none of breathtaking structure, not of an elegance luxurious, neither huge urban nor technological advance-ness ...but everything of LP unexplanably gives me an impression to the most, I Love this city so much.
