kiku99 May 13th, 2004, 05:01 PM Vientiane reminds of big Thai provinces. I can't believe that the population there is only 4-5 million for the whole country.

T-JAPS May 13th, 2004, 09:23 PM I like Laos very much. I've been there more than three times. People there are nice.

Chad May 14th, 2004, 03:45 AM Vientiane reminds of big Thai provinces. I can't believe that the population there is only 4-5 million for the whole country.
Yeh, belive it or not Iceland population is only 200 000 for the whole country while Rekjavik(the capital) alone conains more than 2/3 of that..:D
Chad May 14th, 2004, 03:46 AM I like the pic with lots of people (celebrating Songkran?) :)

It does looks very nice....:)
Jo May 14th, 2004, 03:34 PM Welcome T-JAPS, enjoy the forums!
I like that structure very much.. a fusion of Lao and French architecture. It has a very 'unpolished' feel up close actually.
I wonder if that light brown color on it is from the sand/dirt on the streets. In Bangkok dirty buildings are black, in Laos they are red/brown :)
kiku99 May 14th, 2004, 04:24 PM hey welcome the new forumer. yeah, i think the fushion of Laos and French is pretty good.
Wisarut May 14th, 2004, 04:32 PM Weerl, that's Pratuxay (Pratoochai) used to be the monumment of Anonymous soldiers ... using cement whcih was supposed to used for the airport construction ... but the new regive has removed the sign of Royal Lao Armed Forces out and replace with Thepphanom sign ...
Chad May 14th, 2004, 04:44 PM Looks pretty cool indeed, I can tell that Vientien is one well planned city by looking at this pic...:)
http://img67.photobucket.com/albums/v205/atichart/Lao_025.jpg
uno June 2nd, 2004, 05:59 AM I like Vientiane. One of small capital in the world.
archstudent June 2nd, 2004, 06:29 AM yes.. looks greenly and clean :) i like to go there someday
Chad June 2nd, 2004, 05:34 PM "Charming" is the word that suits the most for this capital...:)
Monkey June 2nd, 2004, 06:19 PM O wow, Atom! Thank you sooooo much! :) You gave us a rare treat, and I enjoy and appreciate it enormously: pictures of the Laotian capital!
What a beautiful and magical place ... both the city and the country. Jo, you've actually been there? Man, I envy you!
Aquamadoor, Atom posted the pictures here because there still is no Indochina forum. :(
And a warm welcome to T-JAPS also from me.
Jo June 3rd, 2004, 12:17 AM Yes, Vientiane could be spelled 'visa-run' for me ;) I rather go there than to Malaysia or Cambodia, despite the cost of entrance.
It is a very peaceful place and I hope it can stay that way even after increased tourism and modernism.
Chad June 3rd, 2004, 02:01 AM Yes, most people go therre for the quietness and peacefully welcoming atmosphere...:)
Odonto June 22nd, 2004, 01:57 PM More pictures from Laung Prabang
I 've read somewhere that it looks exacty like Chiang Mai fifty years ago.

What a Magical Place to visit!
I agree, Chiangmai could looks exactly like it, just because they both used to be in the same Kingdom.....right?
Odonto June 22nd, 2004, 05:21 PM not really, even they are the same group of people but they are different kingdoms, the Kingdom of Lan Na (Chiang Mai) and the Kingdom of Lan Xang (Laung Prabang), they sometimes united and shared the same kings or queens.
Chad June 22nd, 2004, 05:24 PM not really, even they are the same group of people but they are different kingdoms, the Kingdom of Lan Na (Chiang Mai) and the Kingdom of Lan Xang (Laung Prabang), they sometimes united and shared the same kings or queens.
I thought Luang Prabang was in the Lanna Kingdom?
Odonto June 22nd, 2004, 05:40 PM No, it is in Lan Xang kingdom (million elephants kingdom). Lan Xang is also the name that use for Mekong river when it runs through Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.
Mekong river in Luang Prabang, both taken from Phu Si, a small hill at town centre

BTW : Those pics looks magicle Odonto!!...
Jo June 23rd, 2004, 03:57 AM I like those images, they show how it really is up there.
I might live in a rich and modern country but I'm still in many ways jealous of the lifestyle they have there.
Chad June 23rd, 2004, 03:18 PM I also getting bord of this busy life Jo......But Living there is not a great idea either, it's the kind of place to travel to or visit....not to live, too boring lah...:)
Odonto June 23rd, 2004, 07:52 PM Yeah you both are right, going to Laung Prabang is like watching a good film that just can’t be told. The whole place is filled with the smell of living history. It just like U have gone into a time machine and then came out to the olden day northern Thailand, or Is it just nostalgic part of me?
All of Luang Prabang is tiny, built as it is on a small peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan. Yet even this tiny space has a mountain in it and the city is surrounded by mountains which sweep cool air down at night giving relief from the heat of the day.
I went there twice, and always wanted to go back there again.
kiku99 June 23rd, 2004, 09:34 PM the scenery is very beautiful. Chad is right, it's a great place for travel. but it might be too boring to live there, i mean if you are a city kind of person.
Jo June 23rd, 2004, 10:54 PM Luang Prabang at late night is downright cold!
BTW, I think you guys missed what I was saying ;)
I might live in a rich and modern country but I'm still in many ways jealous of the lifestyle they have there.
= some things are better and some are worse of course, but the zest of it is that we in the west have lost some social qualities in the transition to where we are now.
Chad June 24th, 2004, 01:21 AM I went there twice, and always wanted to go back there again.
Thats the exact same feeling foreigners who visited Thiland think...:)
Chad June 24th, 2004, 01:23 AM I might live in a rich and modern country but I'm still in many ways jealous of the lifestyle they have there.
Yeh, Lifestyle there is just peaceful, no rush, no hurry, no competing...what else, where elase u want......just enjoying your life in a quiet way...:)
Speed August 24th, 2004, 08:02 PM I went to Luang Prabang last year with friends for Songkran holidays....SO GREAT!! The parade and festivities were like I imagine Thailand was decades ago....so wonderful, peaceful...fun.....people actually sprinkling water (not shooting super water canons :) ) Air super clean......and temples and markets and sidewalk cafes wonderful......"L'Elephant" restaurant cool and delicious
We stayed at a nice little hotel called "Villa Santi" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/speedracer7/Other/Santi.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/speedracer7/Other/santi1.jpg
We got up really early to make merit by giving food to the monks. I was so surprised because there were hundreds of monks....I bought about four hundred chocolate bars and actually ran out because of the never ending lines! The next morning I was prepared....
I really like Luang Prabang and hope it keeps its World Heritage character...such a nice break from the fast city.
atom August 25th, 2004, 03:30 AM I'm was so surprised with their so many monks in Luang Prabang too and you will feel like you still live in Thailand :)
Speed August 25th, 2004, 07:16 AM Yes Luang Prabang is one of my all time favorite smaller cities, together with Florence and San Francisco :)
bURL August 25th, 2004, 08:40 PM My friend and I went to LP and VT a couple of years ago by Van from BKK , It was the best place among my 3 neighbouring destinations ,but so strange that I cannot told why , LP has no world wonder , none of breathtaking structure, not of an elegance luxurious, neither huge urban nor technological advance-ness ...but everything of LP unexplanably gives me an impression to the most, I Love this city so much.
Thunderflip September 3rd, 2004, 10:34 PM Vientianne doesn`t seem to be poor as it really is.
