This indeed is a very bad news. It will cool the steam out of their progress. You know I am praying for a terrorist attack, which is better for the airline.

If you are talking about US American news channels, then I have long stopped watching those. What they talk about doesn't apply to me most of the time.

I get the news I want to know about from the internet, instead of what is pushed to me which is usually garbage as far as I am concerned.

Well it hadn't happened in a long time, even though they had a few close calls recently. I mentioned this issue somewhere on this site, yesterday, EA needs to get those new air crafts because they working at maximum capacity right now. I talked to a pilot about a year ago, and he told me people in the inside are afraid of the strain on the workers and planes currently being over used.
I don't wanna blame Boeing, but their failure to deliver the dream liner in 2009, is putting the airline in a very tight position of trying to balance aggressive expansion planes it had envisioned vs safety for the planes currently in use.
I am not sure what caused this problem, we will sure find out soon, but even after this incident I hope they can cool down their network expansion and try to find way to lease more planes in the mean time from manufacturer's.

I know they were extremely irritated with ETC as their networks were failing far too regularly for comfort. They ditched ETC last year and started their own network via direct sat links. It may not have to do with this accident but ti could add to the issue if indeed they are relying on ETC.

They were made a laughing stock at one time I witnessed. While waiting for check-in in Bangkok airport to fly to Addisaba on ET, the network link was down and they had us wait for 3.5 hrs standing in line. Other passenger with other European and Asian airliners were asking us what was up, they were shaking their heads and you could safely assume what those people were thinking, never fly African airlines.

However this accident here is a really bad news against them.

Survivors found in Lebanon plane crash, army says transportation minister (4th Lead)

Jan 25, 2010, 5:38 GMT

Beirut - Lebanese army officials told local media they rescued seven survivors after an Ethiopian airliner carrying 90 passengers crashed into the sea off Lebanon early Monday.

Lebanese Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi, visibly moved, said that the Ethiopian Airlines plane, carrying 83 passengers with seven crew members, fell into the sea four minutes after taking off from Beirut's international airport.

The aircraft carried 54 Lebanese nationals, 22 Ethiopians, as well as Iraqi, Syrian, British, French nationals, the minister said.

The reports of survivors in the local media did not specify the nationalities involved.

An airport official had said earlier 92 passengers were on board.

The official said the Ethiopian Airlines plane was struck by lightening before into fell into the sea.

The Boeing aircraft was en route to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when it disappeared off the radar screens shortly after take-off, the state-run Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The plane departed at 1:46 am (2346 GMT Sunday) from Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut, according to the airport's flight schedule.

Witnesses in the area said they heard a loud noise and then saw a plane on fire plunging into the water.

Rescue teams were seen gathering near the area where the plane reportedly crashed.

A member of the rescue team told dpa, 'the weather is not helping us at all ... but we hope to find some survivors.'

Whew, how unlucky for the poor souls. If indeed this is true these are the unluckiest bunch of people.

I think this is a better news for the airline though, avoid human error and/or equipment error by all means.

I never heard of a plane crush due to a lightning strike before. Searching the net, I got this as an example, It can happen,

===============
A lightning-caused a crash of an airliner in the United States on December 8, 1962 when it hit a Pan American Boeing 707 flying in a holding pattern over Elkton, Maryland. It caused a spark that ignited fuel vapor in a tank. The resulting explosion brought the airplane down, killing all 81 aboard.

I think this Lightning story is DISINFORMATION to divert attention from a terrorist attack and from the catastrophic political and human rights conditions in Ethiopia of the western puppet and ethno-fascist 5% minority regime of Meles Zenawi.

It rather appears a terrorist attack, if that is the case would be interesting to know who did it.

Ethiopian Airlines is a good source of income and foreign currency for the ruling western puppet ethno-fascist regime of Meles Zenawi which was installed by the USA in 1991 and still kept in power against the will of over 90% of the Ethiopian population through support from the west.

By the way the Ethiopians here do not represent Ethiopians both at home and in the diaspora who are overwhelmingly anti-woyane. So it is good to make sure that lies and woyane propaganda are not spread here.

According to the World Wide Lightning Location Network out of the University of Washington, data showed severe lightning in the Lebanon area hours within the time of the crash.

"A significant bolt was detected at 2:37 a.m., local time, 10 miles South of the Beirut Airport and 2.5 miles west of the coastal town of Na'ameh," said AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Henry Margusity.

The detected bolt was in line with the runway, and occurred shortly after the plane left Beirut at 2:30 a.m.

It appears that this bolt was directly in the flight path of the plane, which was headed to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

"Eight WWLLN sensors detected this particular stroke, which indicates the stroke was stronger than average," said Professor Robert Holzworth, Director of the World Wide Lightning Location Network.

A relative of one of the passengers commented that the plane should have been delayed at take off due to bad weather.

"They should have delayed the flight for an hour or two to protect the passengers. There had been strong lightning bolts and we hear that lightning strikes planes especially during take offs."

Commercial jets are equipped with special lightning protection, including aircraft skins made of electricity-conducive aluminum, Fuel tanks and any piping carrying fuel are also protected by a skin that is thick enough to withstand sparking.

According to the Scientific American, it is estimated that each airplane in the U.S. commercial fleet is stuck by lightning more than once each year.

Of course it did, anyone with an IQ of at least 50 will understand that a 2002 made Beoing 737-800 model, a 20 year veteran pilot, top airline in the world, ... DOES NOT result in an a crash unless there was an unknown factor.

Here is a clip from FRANCE 24, an aviation expert weighs in:

If this is true it is horrible, horrible misfortune.

Lightning is unlikely as the cause of the crash, as i said earlier terrorist attack, explosion inside the plane or missile attack, is the likely cause.

Terrorism cannot be ruled out in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409
By Sean Osborne Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The Lebanese French-language newspaper L’Orient Le Jour reports today that there were eyewitnesses to the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409. These eyewitnesses describe an explosion onboard the aircraft. Following the explosion the witnesses describe the aircraft breaking apart into four pieces which then transformed into a fireball that plunged into the Mediterranean Sea. The same report also speaks to strong indications that one passenger associated with the terrorist group Hezbollah was on board the aircraft. This passenger was identified as a member of “the Tajeddine family.” There has been no official confirmation or denial of this passenger being on board the aircraft.

'Sabotage' Not Ruled Out Altogether in Ethiopian Plane Crash

Hypotheses and speculations mounted about a "sabotage" action in the Ethiopian plane crash which plunged into the Mediterranean sea in stormy weather earlier this week with 90 passengers and crew on board feared dead.
The Ethiopian plane crash which plunged into the Mediterranean sea in stormy weather earlier this week with 90 passengers and crew on board is likely a "deliberate" attack, some media reports said Wednesday.

While the daily al-Liwaa said the crash is likely a "deliberate" attack, pan-Arab Asharq al-Awsat did not rule out "sabotage" after the disaster presumably killed all 90 passengers and crew.

OTV, meanwhile, which is close to Hizbullah and is reputed to have strong ties with Hizbullah circles, cited official circles as saying that the Ethiopian plane was likely hit by a rocket.

Al-Liwaa based its hypothesis on Hizbullah's heightened concern about the catastrophe and the fact that a Hizbullah delegation, including Hashem Safieddine and MP Nawar al-Sahili, was supposed to be on the plane.

It said the trip was cancelled at the last minute upon instructions by Speaker Nabih Berri to allow Sahili to attend a parliamentary session scheduled for Monday.

Berri, however, called off the meeting after the plane crash disaster.

Al-Liwaa also pointed to Hizbullah's noteworthy presence in the funeral of one of the plane victims identified as Hassan Tajeddine in the southern town of Hanaway.

It said Tajeddine had close ties with Hizbullah.

However, a communique issued by Hizbullah strongly denied Al Liwaa's report and said it was "totally unbased."

"The newspaper used some atmospheres related to the trip of MP Nawwar al-Sahili to publish a totally unbased scenario," added Hizbullah's communique.

Navigation sources, meanwhile, told Asharq al-Awsat that "all possibilities are open."

They said an "explosion" likely took place on the plane, pointing out that lightning by itself cannot bring down an aircraft.

The sources also raised the possibility that the lightning hit the plane in a "sensitive area" that, together with human and technical errors, led to the crash.

Witnesses said the aircraft was in flames as it dropped into the sea.

Lebanese leaders, including President Michel Suleiman, Defense Minister Elias Murr and Transportation Minister Ghazi Aridi, have ruled out sabotage in the plane crash. I just wish this character can stop masquerading under my favorite Ethiopian Rulers of ALL time, mesaw kasa or Aste Tewodros. If he was alive he would cut this guy's head off for disrespecting the word ETHIOPIA and its people. Being an opposition is one thing, but declaring a war against your own country and its citizens ( whether it be Tigre, Amhara, even the Afar's and Somalis) is just stupid.

That being said, unfortunately I do believe there is a huge corruption going on inside Ethiopian Airlines HR department. I have heard personal accounts of favoring people of Tigray origin and/or being a member of EPRDF when they do the hiring of the Hostess's. But, that does not give one the ground to use forums like this one to constantly degrade, mock and insult your country in every occasion even in this tragic accident. :ohno::ohno:

First of, unlike you, I don't have to type insulting words in Amharic in order to make my points. This is where the big difference comes between us, you have a very troubled life, you are unhappy in your life and project your frustrations on anything you can get your hands on. I have noticed your postings lately and there is not even a single sentence where you are talking about Ethiopia and its people aside from your cheap political shots at the government. You couldn't find a single picture of a beautiful lady walking on street or a church/mosque and post it here, and share the country you want us to believe you are fighting for? Or are all people and churches Weyane?
So, Honestly I feel sorry for you and your kinds because Whether this government is in power or another comes tomorrow the people in Ethiopia have made up their minds when it comes to development, they all want it NOW. If you had completed high school you have realized that a country doesn't develop by just talking, it needs people to work together and make hard decisions.
So, I will pray for you because when mama Ethiopia and its people HOPE ( and in some cases struggle )for a better future, you will have no chance of stopping it. OH, yeah I forgot you can join Ginbot 7 and engage in a military coup

Recovered Black Box Could Tell Story of Ethiopian Plane Crash
Lebanese marine commandos managed to pull one of the two black boxes from the crashed Ethiopian plane which is "critical" to determining the cause of the crash.
Transportation Minister Ghazi Aridi, which has described the recovery of the black box on Sunday as "very important," said efforts continued to pull the cockpit voice recorder.

"The black box is very important because it includes all the jet's technical data," Aridi said in remarks published by several Beirut newspapers on Monday.

Head of the Pilots' Syndicate Mahmoud Houmani said Monday that Lebanon should not expect to receive the final report into the plane crash before six months.

A statement issued by the Lebanese Army Command said the black box was retrieved around 11:35am Sunday and taken to Beirut Naval Base where it was handed over to the plane's investigation team.

Prime Minister Saad Hariri immediately put his private plane at the disposal of the investigation team. The team flew to Paris with the black box early Monday.

"Divers from Navy Commando Regiment were able to pull eight bodies belonging to victims of the ill-fated Ethiopian plane up till now, the search is ongoing to find the remaining bodies," said the army communiqué issued Sunday afternoon, bringing to 23 the number of bodies pulled.

Director of Rafik Hariri state hospital in Beirut Wassim Wazzan said Monday that the hospital received seven of the eight retrieved bodies.

"We will have more information about the DNA test results in the next 36 hours," Wazzan said in a radio station interview.

Aridi said the flight data recorder had been retrieved and that efforts continued to recover the cockpit voice recorder.

The Airlines/Airport Examiner has received exclusive information confirmed by four separate sources and reported by a Swedish journalist for the Lebanese Arabic language newspaper Al-Akhbar that a second aircraft on final approach to landing at Beirut may have played a role in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET409 on January 25, 2010.

Statements made anonymously by Lebanese airport sources report that Captain Habtamu Benti, the pilot in command (PIC) of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800 encountered engine problems, perhaps a flame out, during takeoff, and requested permission to abort the flight and return to Beirut. He was given clearance to do so, but another aircraft, a Etihad Airlines flight from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates was in the process of landing and could have interfered with his emergency maneuvers. Exactly what happened under this scenario is as yet unknown.

There may have been miscommunication in vectoring both aircraft, possible oversights by flight controllers, or other circumstances that are still to be determined. What is clear is that the issue of blame has nothing to do with national pride or skin complexion, but rather with the color of money. Maneuvering and spin control by the Government of Lebanon appear based on issues of liability for the crash, and subsequent financial responsibility and payment to the families of the victims.

The Taxi driver who transported the crew of the crushed plane from their hotel to the airport said this

""I normally work with other airlines, but on this particular night I was asked to drop off the ET crew. It was dark and we only spent a short time together in the car and my English isn't very good, so it is difficult for me to describe the pilot in much detail. But I do remember what he said before stepping out of the taxi. He said, "I hope nothing will happen during our flight tonight. May God be with us". Then he turned around to his colleagues all smiles and jokes. "He must have sensed something was going to happen," the driver added."

As I said, the cause of the crash was most likely a sabotage, the cover-up tactics of the Lebanese government as we can read below support that theory.
And the fool 4th grade graduate woyane officials behaved childishly and cowardly in Lebanon. They could not even prevent the destruction of evidence from the black box.:ohno:

Hints of foul play?

Despite a consistent position that there will be no statements given by the Ethiopian side regarding the investigations into the causes of the crash of ET-409 off the coast of Lebanon, one thing though has been made clear by officials here - that nothing has yet been ruled out—including sabotage.

An investigation by The Reporter has revealed that in addition to breaching the “gag agreement’ between high officials of both countries, the Lebanese side has also been committing a series of deliberate tampering of evidence, withholding of information and preventing access to Ethiopian investigation teams sent to Beirut.

A 13-member Ethiopian team, comprising senior pilots, medical personnel and other professionals, went to Beirut on January 26.

Reliable sources have disclosed to The Reporter that the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) was tampered with by the Lebanese. The professionals that went to inspect the CVR are said to have found that recorded segment of several minutes was deleted.

Usually, the CVR records for 30 minutes and then deletes that and begins to record another 30 minutes segment. In case of an accident, regardless of the extent or type the CVR is built to retain the voice recorded in the cockpit for the last 30 minutes before a crash. The CVR records all the conversations made in the cockpit.

While the estimated flight time of the plane has so far been put at four minutes, The Reporter has learned that Ethiopian professionals were given only two minutes’ segment of the recording to listen.

According to The Reporter’s sources, the recording should have included segments from the time the chokes were removed from underneath the wheels. According to the sources, however, some parts before the two minute recording available and after it were missing.

“There is only recording of the conversation during take off. And you can hear what the pilots were being told by the tower control. The clearance that has been given to the pilots while flight ET-409 was taxiing is missing. The conversation made some time after the plane took off is also missing. When the Ethiopian professionals asked to listen to the tape for the second time the Lebanese authorities refused.”

When the Ethiopian delegation asked how some parts of the recorded material was missing the Lebanese authorities are reported to have declined to give explanations.

When Ethiopian team arrived in Beirut on the 26th, the director general of the Lebanese Civil Aviation Authority briefed them about the rescue efforts. During the briefing the director general told the Ethiopian delegation that 25 bodies had been recovered.

The Ethiopian delegation had passed this information to the concerned authorities and the media at home. At the Rafiq Hariri Hospital morgue, however, the Ethiopians found 14 bodies. When they asked the physicians where the rest of the remains were they were told that the hospital received only 14 bodies. When they asked the director general about the situation he only said it was a mistake.

According to the sources, bodies are part of the major sources of clue to the cause of a crash. The injury inflicted on bodies is important in identifying the type and cause of an accident.

“Was there a fire on the plane? Was there an explosive or was the plane shot down? The information investigators gather from bodies is crucial.”

Only recently have the Lebanese authorities announced they have recovered and identified all the remains of the 90 victims. In addition, some bodies of the Lebanese passengers were handed over to their families before the investigation process got underway.

“The Ethiopian delegation was not given access to those bodies. It was also not allowed to talk to families of the victims.”

If not for investigation purposes, it is mandatory that representatives of Ethiopian Airlines meet and talk with families regarding insurance.

The delegation, according to The Reporter’s sources, was not even allowed to have the victims’ families (Lebanese) fill out certain insurance related forms.

The director general reportedly refused to let the delegation talk to the families saying that Lebanese people were violent and could take any action against the Ethiopian delegation.

The director general also said Lebanese men marry four to five wives, making it difficult to determine which one the delegation ought to talk to.

The Ethiopian delegation was not allowed to visit the crash site and make a firsthand observation of the rescue and search operation.

“They did not want the Ethiopians to see the bodies as they were being retrieved. Why did they not want them to see the bodies? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered,” the sources said.

The other big mystery has to do with a witness that vanished into thin air. Officials of the Lebanese Civil Aviation Authority on the first day of the accident conducted an interview with an army officer who said he saw the plane explode into a ball of fire and plunge into the sea.

And when American and the French investigators came to Beirut the Lebanese officials are reported to have told them that they had this interview on record.

But when later they were asked for the recording of the interview, they failed to provide it. The witness also could not be available.

Ninety two percent of the plane’s body still remains under sea. The Lebanese authorities took some parts of the wreckage and are said to have locked it up.

“The Lebanese authorities recently announced that the fuselage, the main body of the aircraft, was found. How can it take so long to locate this?

The same thing happened to the black box.

Reports from Lebanon and official statements had indicated that it was located on January 29, adding that it would only take eight hours to send divers and bring it up.

Officially, though, the Lebanese said it was retrieved on February 14, fifteen days after they said they detected the signal from the black box.

The Ethiopian team was also told that the memory chip of the CVR was missing when they arrived in Paris. When the Lebanese were asked for permission to inspect the CVR as soon as it was retrieved in Beirut, they are reported to have refused claiming that they could not unseal the container.

Despite all these, however, the Lebanese have persistently been trying to imply that the crash was caused either by technical failure or human error.

LONDON – British intelligence agents have reopened their investigation into the mysterious crash of an Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet last February after a terror suspect taken into custody in Saudi Arabia confessed it was bombed, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The information came after the mass arrest of more than 100 al-Qaida terror suspects in the Middle East.

The Boeing 737-8 plunged into the Mediterranean shortly after takeoff from Lebanon, killing all 92 passengers on board. Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri blamed pilot error. :bash:

But one of the al-Qaida operatives held in a high-security prison in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, has told his British-trained interrogators that the aircraft was destroyed by an al-Qaida suicide bomber trained in a Yemeni training camp.

Yemen is the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden's family. The operative said the Beirut bomber trained in the same Yemeni camp as Christmas Day underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.
