Messi January 27th, 2010, 01:14 AM Since air transportation is booming in Turkey for a decade now, it's about time to open a topic about I here.
Well the latest exiting development is the sponsorship of Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines is going to be a new sponsor of FC Barcelona and Manchester United for 3 years. Both teams will use Turkish Airlines for their continental and intercontinental flights.
That's the B777 which FC Barcelona is going to use for intercontinental flights

napoleon February 24th, 2010, 07:32 PM Turkish Airlines makes Bangkok its regional hub
Bangkokpost 24/02/2010
Turkish Airlines is moving to consolidate Bangkok as its regional hub as it aggressively expands in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
The Istanbul-based carrier is counting on Thai Airways International (THAI) as its strategic partner to begin its foray into the Australia-New Zealand market.
The airline plans to extend its non-stop flight from Istanbul to Bangkok through to Ho Chi Minh City in October, while Kuala Lumpur and Manila are also on the radar screen for flight extension, possibly next year.
It hopes to increase its Istanbul-Bangkok flights from daily to twice daily later this year if its plan to extend services to Australia-New Zealand partnering with THAI materialises.
Adnan Aykac, general manager for Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, said yesterday that negotiations with THAI to form a code-share partnership began about a year ago and had been slow.
Turkish Airlines would switch its passengers to THAI-operated flights to Australia under the plan, but THAI does not see any urgency to co-operate.
"While we are hopeful we can strike a deal with THAI later this year, we do have alternatives to support our growth in this region," he said.
The airline sees Australia as a lucrative market not adequately covered and wants to exploit THAI's extensive Australian routes, before entering the region itself.
Turkish Airlines transfers about 30,000 of its passengers a year to THAI's Australian network, and Turkish has had a sales office in Australia for 15 years.
He said a code-share deal with THAI would result in Turkish Airlines feeding some 40,000 passengers a year to THAI's Australian-bound flights.
The airline wishes to work with THAI on Australian operations although the Australian government signed its first air services agreement with Turkey this week allowing direct flights.
Turkish Airlines bucked the trend of slumping traffic through Bangkok last year, when domestic political unrest, the global downturn and H1N1 flu hurt the airline business. It claimed a 5% increase in traffic through Bangkok in 2009, raising its load factor by 6% from 2008 to an average of 80%.
The airline expects to increase these numbers as it strengthens brand awareness in the Thai market. It has budgeted 30 million baht for advertising and promotion this year, perhaps the largest sum for a foreign carrier in Thailand.
The airline allocated US$70 million for advertising worldwide this year, 50% more than 2009. "We hope 2010 will be way different (in growth figures) for us (in Thailand)," he said.

DENIZLI March 1st, 2010, 01:34 AM Turkish Airlines plans to fly to Tanzania
By Apolinari Tairo | Feb 24, 2009
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (eTN) - Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, has announced its plan to establish direct flights between Istanbul and Tanzania’s capital city of Dar es Salaam in the near future.
In a joint communiqué issued during the final day of the visit by Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Tanzania, among key areas of cooperation between Tanzania and Turkey will be aviation business.
Tanzanian Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Bernard Membe said Turkish Airlines has shown a great interest to join other big airlines to establish schedule flights to Tanzania as a forward step to foster stronger bilateral trade ties between Turkey and Tanzania.
While in Tanzania, the Turkish president said he was disappointed in the lack of direct flights between the two countries. Turkish travelers visiting Tanzania have to pass through Nairobi in Kenya.
Turkish Airlines operates on a network of scheduled services to 140 global destinations and 135 domestic destinations. It serves 155 airports in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.
The airline operates flights in 11 African airports including Nairobi, the newly established destination launched during last weekend’s visit in Kenya by the Turkish president.

Turkish Airlines to enter Australian market in 2011
Turkish Airlines CEO Temel Kotil in Sydney yesterday
Turkish Airlines plans to start flying into Australia from 2011, its chief executive announced Tuesday at a press conference in Sydney.
After giving a presentation at the Australia Pacific Aviation Outlook Summit 2009 yesterday, CEO Temel Kotil told reporters that Australia was a destination it planned to serve two years from now.
With the carrier’s expansion to Jakarta scheduled to start at the end of this month, Kotil said a Boeing 777-300 aircraft would serve the Australian route from Istanbul via Jakarta.
Kotil was confident that the carrier would be able to compete in the Australian market as it “covers Europe better” than any other airline.
He expects the flights will bring in many tourists from Turkey and be able to serve Australians desiring to visit Turkey for ANZAC services.
The carrier plans to continue expanding its network and frequency, with the Philippines and Vietnam next on its destination wish list.
Kotil added that the carrier hopes to double its frequency in the next two to three years, with hopes to eradicate limitations on destinations such as Narita, Japan which it hopes to increase its four-weekly flights to daily operations.
To serve its expansion Turkish Airlines have ordered 19 aircraft, 12 of which are Boeing 777-300s in a 3-class configuration and 7 of which are Airbus 330-300s.

THY boosts passenger numbers by 25 pct in first two months
National flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) increased its number of passengers by 25 percent in the first two months of the year over the same period of last year -- a sign that aviation in Turkey is recovering much more quickly than the rest of the economy.
In a written statement released yesterday on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) of the İstanbul Stock Exchange (İMKB), THY said the number of passengers grew by 25 percent from 3.1 million in the first two months of 2009 to 3.9 million in the same period of this year. Passengers flying business class to international destinations also jumped by 30 percent in January and February over a year ago, and flights arriving from and departing for cities outside Turkey shot up 40 percent. Occupancy rates are also on the rise, increasing by 2.8 percentage points to hit 69.1 percent in the first two months of the year. Moreover, the available seat kilometers (ASK), a measure of an airline’s passenger carrying capacity, grew by 29 percent, from 7.2 billion to 9.3 billion.
The airline showed increases in other areas as well: The number of flights grew by 21.9 percent, to reach 34,870 in January and February over the same period a year ago. The airline’s stock, listed as THYAO on the İMKB, increased by 1.89 percent to close at TL 5.40 per share at the end of the first session of trading yesterday.
Passenger numbers:
2004 - 12 million
2005 - 14 million
2006 - 17 million
2007 - 19.7 million
2008 - 21.5 million
2009 - 25.1 million
2010 - 32 million (by keeping 25% over the year)

hakz2007 June 8th, 2010, 07:24 AM TURKEY AIMS FOR AIR TRANSPORT AGREEMENT WITH PERU
LIMA, June 7 (NNN-ANDINA) - Turkey aims to reach an air transport agreement with Peru due to the increasing demand from Turkish citizens to visit the Andean country's tourist attractions, said Turkey's Ambassador here Namik Güner Erpul.
“I have already coordinated a draft text of an air transport agreement so that this facilitates flights between both countries,” Ambassador Namik Güner Erpul told Andina.
He has also held meetings with representatives of Turkish travel agencies and tour operators, which are keen to promote Peru as a tourist destination in South America.
"They have great interest in including Peru in their itineraries in South America," he said. "There’s always a high demand because whenever they are organising tours to the continent, Peru is a must. The busiest routes are Brazil-Argentina-Peru, Brazil-Chile-Peru, and Brazil-Colombia-Peru."
He said that Turkish Airlines, which operates daily flights between Istanbul and Sao Paulo with a layover in Dakar, plans to launch the Sao Paulo-Lima route.
"The flight between Sao Paulo and Istanbul takes about 11 hours, while flight time between Sao Paulo and Lima would be about five hours, which will boost air traffic between the two countries," he added. http://namnewsnetwork.org/v2/read.php?id=122905

Speaking at a press conference after a ceremony held at the Entebbe International Airport on Monday, Turkish Airlines (THY) chairman Hamdi Topcu said Africa had become an important continent and a strategic partner for Turkey in the recent term.
Expressing Africa's significance for THY as well, Topcu said his company had experienced the highest rise in the number of passengers from Africa with a 49.1 percent increase in 2009.
Topcu also said THY was currently the 4th biggest company in Europe and the best airline company in its region.
"Turkey's rising star THY serves its customers with a young fleet of 142 aircraft. The company, which carried 25.1 million passengers in 2009 and aims at reaching 32 million passengers this year, owns the youngest fleet in Europe," Topcu noted.
Delivering a speech at the press conference, Rama Makuza, the head of Uganda's civial aviation authority, stated that THY's launching direct flights to Entebbe would improve the economic and commercial relations between Turkey and Uganda.
Scheduled flights between Istanbul and Entebbe would be conducted three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Entebbe has become THY's 14th direct flight destination in Africa after Benghazi and Tripoli (Libya), Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa), Algiers (Algeria), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Dakar (Senegal), Khartoum (Sudan), Cairo (Egypt), Casablanca (Morocco), Lagos (Nigeria), Nairobi (Kenya) and Tunis (Tunisia).
Based in Istanbul, THY is one of the fastest growing and prosperous airlines in the world.
The airline's main base is at Ataturk International Airport, with secondary hubs at Esenboga International Airport, Sabiha Gokcen International Airport and Adnan Menderes Airport. In 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, THY carried 17 million, 19.7 million, 22.5 million and 25.1 million passengers with total revenues of US$2.23, US$3.0, US$4.5, and US$4 billion, respectively.
THY posted 387 million Euro of profit in 2009, becoming the top five airline companies following Air China and Ryan Air in the world that recorded the highest profit in 2009.
THY is a member of Star Alliance and has more than 12,000 employees.

AltinD September 11th, 2010, 09:57 PM Any news on THY indefinitelly getting rid of the cattle crate A321 they use on one of their IST - DXB daily flights? Can't they only use A340 or even B737 on that route, is that to much to ask? :bash:
Messi September 11th, 2010, 11:45 PM What's the big difference between A321 and B737 for a passenger?
AltinD September 12th, 2010, 10:06 AM ^^ Try the crmpiness of that A321 they use and then compare.
They have 2 - 3 daily flights to Dubai and they used to have a B737 before that was alright, but then they cramped the terrible A321 that is so tight in space that would make even a short regional flight a torture.
When they added the 2nd daily flight, a A340 started being used also, but the thing is THY doesn't know what plane they will use and their ticketing/booking information only lists the A321. Flying with them, which I do every year and will do it again soon, is like a box of chocolate, you don't know which plane you're gonna get ... in comparison the flight from IST to TIA has always been a breeze with the B737 and the huge wide leather seats and above average legroom.
... Oh, and don't let me start on sadden gate changes at IST Airport. There is not a single time in 11 years that the gate hasn't been changed at the last minute, especially for the flights to TIA, but those to DXB aren't excluded either. The visitors to Dubai I get, also tell me all the same story.
Night Hawk September 12th, 2010, 06:18 PM Is turkish a state run airline?

The problem isn't the A321, but rather the fact that THY crams so many seats in it. I've flown with the A321 a lot (Lufthansa, US Airways, China Southern, Iberia, Shanghai Airlines) and never felt uncomfortable.
Try flying with a CRJ900 if you really want to experience a claustrophobic cattle transport.
AltinD September 12th, 2010, 09:11 PM ^^ Of course the problem is not the plane model. I just want THY not use that particular plane with that particular configuration on the route.

Executive says carrier trying to cope with passenger flow to UAE
http://gulfnews.com/polopoly_fs/cruising-along-1.681205!image/3110921956.jpg_gen/derivatives/box_475/3110921956.jpg
Aysee Misirli Mirza, Turkish Airlines' director for Dubai and Sri Lanka, says the carrier is planning to increase its flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Dubai: Turkish Airlines is planning to launch services of its low-cost subsidiary, AnadoluJet, in Dubai when it gets permission for additional flights to the UAE, a senior executive told Gulf News.
"We want to increase flights to the UAE — both Dubai and Abu Dhabi — as passenger traffic on the UAE-Istanbul sector is growing at a faster pace," Aysee Misirli Mirza, Turkish Airlines' director for Dubai and Sri Lanka, said in an interview.
"AnadoluJet would be able to start flights as soon as we get sufficient traffic rights to the UAE."
Currently a number of budget carriers including flydubai, Air India Express, and Jazeera Airways are serving Dubai, which is going to be the base of flydubai's operations.
No guarantee
Saj Ahmad, aerospace/airline analyst at the UK-based FBE Aerospace, said: "Its subsidiary will find life very difficult in Dubai. Firstly, there is no guarantee it will get slots in Dubai. Jazeera Airways was the last low-cost airline there [to use Dubai as a hub] and it didn't last long. With the presence of the world's fast-growing, low-cost airline, flydubai, the market will not only be crowded, but the unique position of flydubai means it will have much more capability to outprice and snare customers with its classier product."
Turkish currently operates 18 flights a week including 14 to Dubai and four to Abu Dhabi.
"It is entirely feasible that Sharjah and Abu Dhabi become prime choices — neither of which are bad per se, but in terms of getting a decent footprint in Dubai rests largely [on] whether the airline is able to take more risks in expanding its operations to make its UAE services attractive enough to keep rivals at bay. Judging by the inherent success of Emirates and flydubai, this will not be an easy feat and it makes much more sense to go to other UAE cities where low cost competition is a little less pressurised," Ahmad said.
Mirza said she expects to expand the services to 21 flights to Dubai and seven to Abu Dhabi, before launching the low-cost services to the UAE.
"Our seat load factor has increased 7 per cent to 84 per cent this year and we have carried 129,404 during the first seven months of this year compared to 127,000 during the corresponding period last year," she said.
Services to the UAE have been profitable for the Turkish national carrier.
"Within the first seven months, we generated sales of 31 million euros [Dh144,769], up from 25 million euros during the same period last year," she said. "Profits for the first seven months crossed 4 million euros on the Dubai-Istanbul sector as there has been an increase in business class passengers."
She said Turkish is currently promoting destinations across its network of 165 destinations with a fleet of 142 aircraft via its hub Istanbul.
"Our services are becoming extremely popular to East European and Scandinavian destinations as we provide one of the best connectivities," Mirza said. The airline has placed orders for 105 aircraft that will help launch services to more destinations. It is in the process of starting flights to 10 destinations, including Washington, Los Angeles, Vietnam, Bologna, Basra, Erbil, Shiraj, Dhaka, Novosibriska and Podgorica.
Sales revenue
Established in 1933, the airline carried 25 million passengers last year, with 12,000 employees.
Despite the financial crisis, the airline remains profitable. According to Turkish Airlines' financial statements, the airline's sales revenue has increased by 28 per cent in monetary terms, reaching 1.8 billion euros during the first six months of 2010, while its net profit has increased by a staggering 181 per cent to 134 million euros. Operating profit, on the other hand, reached a total of 55 million euros, a 34 per cent decrease compared to the same period in 2009, which is attributed to a 74 per cent increase in fuel expenses.
The number of passengers carried increased by 19.3 per cent, reaching 13.4 million passengers.
Ahmad said: "Turkish Airlines has been one of the few carriers in Europe to continuously grow over the last few years for two key reasons. Firstly, Turkey has invested a lot of money in its tourism and leisure industries to snare European holidaymakers looking for a budget vacation in the wake of recessionary pressures on their income and secondly because Turkish Airlines has an excellent performance record matched with a superb cabin product.
"It is for this reason it has been continuously ordering jets from Airbus and Boeing to capture the huge market it has at its feet."

So replace completely that crap A321 with the A340 already :bash:
AltinD September 12th, 2010, 11:31 PM BTW, I don't know why they say they have 14 flights a week to Dubai.
The 2 regulars start at around 8 PM and 11 PM from Istanbul, but there is a earlier one also, maybe it only does a stop-over to Dubai on the way to somewhere else.

Turkish Airlines to choose between 747-8, A380
Turkish Airlines chairman Hamdi Topçu said Wednesday the carrier will decide on a new large widebody jet order by year-end, choosing between Boeing's new 747-8 jumbo jet and the Airbus A380 superjumbo.
By Dominic Gates
Turkish Airlines chairman Hamdi Topçu said Wednesday the carrier will decide on a new large widebody jet order by year-end, choosing between Boeing's new 747-8 jumbo jet and the Airbus A380 superjumbo.
Topçu spoke at a delivery ceremony at the Future of Flight aviation center in Everett. Turkish Airlines picked up the first of a dozen 777-300ERs and flew it away to Istanbul with a large contingent of airline staff and families aboard.
He said a technical team is evaluating the two giant airplanes and should finalize its analysis by the end of November. If the carrier chooses the 747-8, he said, he'll order between 5 and 10 of the 467-seater jets. The A380 is a bigger airplane, seating about 555 passengers.
The 747-8 is listed for sale at $300 million. However, aircraft valuation firm Avitas estimates that after standard discounts the real market price is about $166 million.
The A380 is listed at $346 million, with an Avitas-estimated real market value of about $192 million.
In December 2008, in the midst of the global downturn, Turkish Airlines anounced its intention to buy 35 widebody and 70 narrow body aircraft to modernize and expand its fleet through 2023.
Last year the airline ordered the dozen 777s, all of which should be delivered by next August. It also ordered a dozen Airbus A330 jets, the first two of which were delivered this month.
Turkish has also ordered 20 narrowbody 737s from Boeing and 20 narrowbody A320s from Airbus.

The 9 hour flight from Istanbul to Bangkok did not feel long because the seats were so comfortable, I fell asleep almost immediately. The IFE system was fantastic so there is no chance that anyone might get bored. But, the most amazing thing is the food. Turkish Airlines cuisine is one of the best. From my experience, its as good, if not better than Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, KLM, Swiss and Malaysia Airlines. One thing I will always remember about this flight was the friendliness of the crew. Upon finishing my dinner, I was still hungry. So, I asked the stewardess for another meal and before I had finished asking her, she got me another round with a big smile on her face.

lady gaga August 19th, 2011, 11:26 PM The Managing Director of Turkish Airlines, Mr. Ali Bulut, has disclosed that the airline may commence scheduled cargo operation from Lagos –Istanbul in September in response to the demand of its loyal customers.
He disclosed this to our correspondent in an interview in the airline office in Lagos.
Bulut stated that cargo business is a big business and that as such the airline has applied to the Ministry of Aviation in Abuja for approval to operate scheduled cargo operations from Lagos –Istanbul, Istanbul –to Lagos.
The managing director revealed that most airlines make much revenue from compared to scheduled passenger operations, adding that already what Turkish airline operate is charter cargo
According Bulut, “Cargo is truly a serious business anywhere in the world and most airlines make more profit from cargo than passenger flight. Presently, we do charter cargo flight to Nigeria, but we have applied to the Ministry of Aviation in Abuja to grant us license for scheduled cargo operations, which we hope would be approved by the ministry. What we want to do is Lagos-Istanbul, Istanbul-Lagos cargo flight”
He continued, “We hope to start this in September immediately we receive approval from the ministry. At inception, what we want to do is once a week flight, but after two or three months, the frequencies can be increased to either two or three flights per week depending on the patronage. Our study reveals that Lagos-Istanbul does not have much cargo, but Istanbul-Lagos is regularly high with cargo. So, it is an avenue we are looking to tap into”
On the skyrocketing price of aviation fuel, which has risen to N220 per litre in Nigeria and efforts the airline has made to remain in business despite the high cost, he posited that the aviation fuel issue is not peculiar to Nigeria but a global challenge, adding that it has made some airline in the United States to fold up.
The Turkish boss added that apart from the high cost of aviation fuel, the airline pay other charges which increase the airline cost of operations, adding that that is why in aviation an empty seat is a loss to the organisation.
In his words, “The problem of aviation fuel is a global crisis and many reputable airlines in the world even in the United States have either closed shop or reduce their frequencies. We are not operating from the moon and so, we cannot be isolated from others. At present, it is a pity that aviation fuel takes at least 50 per cent of airlines’ operating cost, which does not augur well for airline business. You have to know that apart from fuel, many other operating costs too are injected into our operations. For instance, we pay many charges, which include landing and parking, navigational charges and over flyer charges. Again, the crew, aeronautic engineers and other things too are built into operations”.
High cost of operations, he said is not only challenge to Turkish Airlines but to every airlines, adding that the airline does not operate a route because others are flying there but because there is traffic for the operations.
That is why in aviation industry, any empty seat is a loss for the airlines because the moment you take off, the cost of that seat cannot be regained again.
It is a challenge for every airline across the globe, but at Turkish, we always prepare for such season. That is why we don’t just fly to a destination because others are going there. Before we could fly to any route, we are rest assured that we have traffic for our operations.

lady gaga August 20th, 2011, 02:26 PM ISTANBUL: Turkish Airlines plans to expand operations in India in 2012 by doubling weekly flights to 28 and adding Hyderabad as its third Indian destination.
Turkey's flag carrier, which currently operates one flight daily to Delhi and Mumbai, also aims to extend its code share with Air India, India's national carrier, to get more passengers from Indian towns to fly to or through Turkey to other destinations. "We are looking at Chennai and Kolkata after Hyderabad. India is a very important market for us and we need to fly to at least five cities there," Turkish Airlines CEO Temel Kotil said.
Turkish Airlines' 170 aircraft cover 74 European cities through 144 routes, making it the 17th largest carrier in terms of fleet. It uses its Airbus 330-200 and Airbus 330-300 aircraft for its India operations, registering average load factors of 70-75%.
Leadership 18 MonthsOnline MBA in Leadership Upgrade your career today ! CEO said the airline aims to make Istanbul, Turkey's capital, the preferred transit point between Asia and Europe, as it takes only three to four hours to fly to any European city from there. "We are working on diverting 66% of the transfer passengers from Asia to Europe towards Istanbul. This is the size of Qatar Airlines or Etihad," Kotil said, adding that free city tours would be offered to passengers having a long stopover in the city.
The airline also plans to double destinations in South East Asia over the next five years. "We would like to fly to Nepal, Cambodia, Burma, Hanoi, Sydney, Manila and Mongolia in the next two years, as air traffic in these regions is rapidly rising," Kotil said, adding that new aircraft like Airbus 380 and Boeing 787s may be acquired to meet expansion needs. Kotil said the European Union's proposal to make carriers buy carbon credits for using its airspace would pressure the airline's finances, especially since their expenditure had increased on account of aircraft acquisition. But he was hopeful the airline would not have to spend much, as an average fleet age of six to seven years meant its aircraft were fuel efficient.

The logic behind this seems to be to use crappy aircrafts on lines from which you expect the lowest competition. If there is no other airline which competes on the same line then you use your crappy machines for that line..

Skyprince November 14th, 2011, 02:42 PM Its amazing to see the explosive growth of TK , it is somewhat following the way of Gulf carriers . When will TK flying to KUL ? :(
R@ptor November 14th, 2011, 04:35 PM The one thing that baffles me the most about TKs huge expansion is the fact that they are able to also operate all of these new flights from Ataturk airport. I was under the impression that it was operating at its maximum capacity level since about 2 years.
siamu maharaj November 16th, 2011, 06:48 PM Funny thing is that people go on and on about Gulf carriers but no-one ever mentions TK which is following the same path and strategy and is might successful.
deasine November 18th, 2011, 09:53 PM Well that's mostly because the gulf carriers have significantly increased their presence in the aviation industry, at a much larger rate than Turkish. Still said, Turkish has grown much larger and is geographically positioned to do well as a transit carrier.
Turkish Airlines to launch Gatwick flights
London Gatwick is set to gain a new link with Istanbul in December, with the launch of Turkish Airlines’ daily service.
The Turkish national carrier will be the only airline to fly between Gatwick and Istanbul Ataturk Airport.
Easyjet currently operates flights from Gatwick to the Turkish capital, but it flies into Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport.
Sabiha Gokcen is on the Asian side of Istanbul, 35 km from the city centre, while Ataturk is on the European side and is only 24 km from the city centre.
From December 20, flights will depart daily from Gatwick’s newly renovated North Terminal at 1355, arriving in Istanbul Ataturk at 1945, with the return leg leaving the Turkish capital at 1050 and landing back in the UK at 1250.
The service will be operated using an Airbus 321-200, which flies 195 passengers in a two-class layout (to see a seat plan, click here).
The carrier already flies several times a day between London Heathrow and Istanbul Ataturk.
With its new launch, Turkish Airlines will join a list of carriers and routes that have recently moved into Gatwick. The airport has recently attracted Air Asia X, Hong Kong Airlines and Vietnam airlines to base services there (see online news November 18).

The first B737-900er's arrived with the new sky interior cabin concept and flight entertainment systems. They will be used on African flights and will replace the less comfortable 738's.

Very interesting. I think Turkish would be a good partner for LOT. They would invest into the airline and compete on the European market under the LOT brand.
Messi January 23rd, 2012, 01:50 PM LOT has been mentioned several times in the recent years but this time it seems to be really serious. Turkish Airlines is generally preferring growth by increasing passenger numbers and not by acquiring other airlines but Turkish has been always interested in LOT. I would like to know the reason of high interest in LOT.

I would say that among the 10 most populous European countries Poland definitely has the highest growth potential.
Despite its rapidly growing economy, very few Polish people fly yet and in recent years the Polish government has invested a lot of money into the expansion and modernization of its airports.

grjplanes March 26th, 2012, 02:34 PM Any ideas on what Turkish's plan is with their South African route, as they have said before that they'll be offering nonstop service to CPT in due time, de-tagging from the current JNB flights. Currently flying daily IST-JNB-CPT...wouldn't that rather warrant a 3 weekly nonstop CPT flight, and continue operating daily to JNB (or maybe extend that to Durban (DUR) then)?
leftieboarder March 26th, 2012, 03:14 PM Any ideas on what Turkish's plan is with their South African route, as they have said before that they'll be offering nonstop service to CPT in due time, de-tagging from the current JNB flights. Currently flying daily IST-JNB-CPT...wouldn't that rather warrant a 3 weekly nonstop CPT flight, and continue operating daily to JNB (or maybe extend that to Durban (DUR) then)?
I guess 3 weekly nonstop might be less attractive for business travellers who can now fly any given day. What could be done is have 3 weekly nonstop and 4 weekly via JNB. As demand picks up more nonstops can replace 1-stops.
grjplanes March 26th, 2012, 05:56 PM Certainly a daily flight is needed for Johannesburg, attracting business travel, but for Cape Town which is more leisure orientated I don't think it's that important for daily flights. Considering that they can't carry any pax on JNB-CPT, they must be losing money on that leg of the route, I doubt that more than 50% carries on to CPT. Otherwise if they could do CPT via another African city and get 5th freedom right to carry pax between CPT and that city as well, good possibilities could be Kinshasa or Lusaka...both routes where there is no airline flying nonstop to CPT, and not taking away from Star Alliance partner SAA.
People are really not fond of the more than 1 hour stop in JNB, with many of the pax onto CPT is also connecting in IST.
YU-AMC March 27th, 2012, 05:05 AM Amazing stuff. They are going with 2nd daily to BEG.
siamu maharaj March 28th, 2012, 04:38 AM Booked a ticket on Turkish. Their website is buggy as hell. Half the stuff doesn't work. That's unacceptable for such a big airline!
hellospank25 May 16th, 2012, 06:43 AM The one thing that baffles me the most about TKs huge expansion is the fact that they are able to also operate all of these new flights from Ataturk airport. I was under the impression that it was operating at its maximum capacity level since about 2 years.
It probably has to do with the fact that Turkey has some of the lowest levels of bureaucratic red tape in the world and therefore it must be very easy for them to set up new routes quickly and make them operational.
hellospank25 May 16th, 2012, 06:50 AM It would be great if in the near future turkish airlines could launch flights from Istanbul to Catania or Istanbul to Malta

Momo1435 June 21st, 2012, 01:52 PM It looks like there will be a Turkish order for the big widebody's at next months Farnborough Airshow. It doesn't matter if they go for the 747 or the A380, it will be a big step in capacity for Turkish Airlines.
Turkish Air May Order 15 Airbus or Boeing Jumbos Next Month
Turk Hava Yollari AO, or Turkish Airlines, will order at least 15 jumbo airliners valued at $4 billion from Airbus SAS (EAD) or Boeing Co. (BA) as early as next month as it adds routes and seeks acquisitions in emerging markets.
Europe’s fifth-largest carrier plans to purchase Airbus A380 or Boeing 747-8 planes for delivery after 2014, Chairman Hamdi Topcu said in an interview in Istanbul.
Turkish Airlines is looking at jets bigger than Boeing’s 330-seat 777, currently the carrier’s largest model, as it seeks to lure transfer traffic between Europe and Asia away from rivals Air France-KLM Group, Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA) and British Airways-parent International Consolidated Airlines Group SA. (IAG)

Neo, MAX
While the emphasis will be on adding bigger planes, the carrier is also interested in the Airbus A320 Neo and Boeing 737 MAX narrow-bodies, the executive said.
full article:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-20/turkish-airlines-may-order-15-airbus-or-boeing-jumbos-next-month.html
There's also a mention of interest in the NEO and/or the MAX, but that's not really news of course. Their current narrowbody fleet is split between the A320 and the 737 families, a follow up order of the newer versions is only logical. It will only be news if they will choose only one of the newest instead of a split order.
Messi June 22nd, 2012, 12:47 PM The unofficial state "embargo" on French products due to political tension between both states has been finally suspended couple of days ago. This might be a step in favor of the A380.

YU-AMC July 13th, 2012, 01:08 AM So what is the relationship with TK and Lufthansa as both being in the SA. Is TK ever pressured by LH to give up on some markets? I am curious to know because all star carriers in the former Yugoslavia act as Lufthansa puppet feeder airlines. Now, not to offend TK, of course it is a different and bigger superpower airline, but I am curious if they share any profit with SA? I suppose they decide what they do in their house..

On the contrary. TK has opened its 12th destination in Germany and Istanbul has become an alternative for Germans traveling to the Mideast and Eastern Asia. The passenger numbers show that TK is rather a competitor and not a "feeder".
TK has 200 destinations and is still expanding aggressively. It is coming closer and closer to the Lufthansa Group (consisting of Austrian and Swiss etc..) with its 223 destinations. And most important the growth is not merely quantitative, also in terms of quality TK rising the gap to LH each year.

I agree, it's more than clear in what directing TK is heading. So I guess LH group simply can't control certain markets the way they have managed to control the Balkans.

well, i have bought a round trip on Tbilisi-Istanbul-Munich flight from 1 august to 14 august.
i have only 55 minutes transit time in Ataturk Airport. i'm afraid i will miss the plane to munich. is 55 minutes enough? what about luggage? i think its too little time :) :D .
and do i have to check in again in Ataturk airport or just go from the arrival gate do departure gate by the elivator?
Cadîr July 15th, 2012, 07:16 PM You will not get down to enter Turkey, you'll remain in the transit area, so I think there will be no problems.

lady gaga July 15th, 2012, 07:28 PM Not to be negative but its very very very little time especially when you're flying Turkish Airlines they delay a lot I had the same problem but with Qatar Airways I was coming from Khartoum to Dammam via Doha and I was having 1 hour transite in Doha and we arrived just 10 minutes late from Khartoum so I missed the other flight to Dammam but just hope it be on time

I am looking at the cities such as Belgrade where they fly twice a day. So if I book with them I should arrive around 6pm @BEG which is not so bad. I just think that early departure would give them a better chance to snatch some Us/Canada bound traffic from the Balkans. They probably have decent feed already from Asian/African feeder airports.

YU-AMC August 24th, 2012, 02:46 AM I flew Emirates 2 years ago and I don't remember that it was possible.
The best thing is it was for free on my flight with Turkish Airlines.
Btw I found this:
http://www.gadling.com/2010/07/20/emirates-airlines-bringing-internet-and-mobile-phone-calls-to-en/
Btw I know this is not the best place to ask, but I should be flying to BEG soon. I am thinking of flying TK via IST to BEG in premium economy with TK from YYZ. Do you think it will more comfortable flight over lets say flying regular economy with an average european airline? It's a longer trip over casual EU stop, but I think that may not be an issue if I fly P/E with TK which is priced very reasonable. I never flew via IST, so I want to give it a try.
noir-dresses August 24th, 2012, 06:20 AM The real question remains, is that little bit of comfort worth the extra flight time ?
Unless it's a true flat bed, nothing is very comforting after two hours of flight.
My two cents.
AltinD August 24th, 2012, 10:02 PM IST is in a very dear need of an extension or a completely new terminal. The current one that opened in 2000 has really reached the peak.
The decission to remove the security gates before the boarding gates and have only 6 gates at the entrance of the Terminal (transit area) is horrendeous and creates huge crowds cramped in a small place at peak time.
I almost lost my connection when I arrived from Dubai in the morning time :ohno:
Momo1435 August 25th, 2012, 10:51 AM Istanbul will get another new airport, the government will soon announce a tender for a new airport that will be located north of the European part of the city. The first phase of the new airport that will handle 90 million passengers per year should open in 2015.

UltrAslanErkan August 25th, 2012, 04:51 PM I would prefer a new Airport instead of Atatürk Airport.
A new big (+100 Million) Airport on the european side and closing Atatürk Airport.
I think three Airport are unnecessary! If Sabiah Gökcen will be extended(they should do it), two Airport will be fine for Istanbul!
www.sercan.de August 26th, 2012, 07:11 PM But the european part needs a bigger one
YU-AMC August 28th, 2012, 02:44 AM The real question remains, is that little bit of comfort worth the extra flight time ?

The bets bet would be to fly to IST and return back via EU to avoid backtracking.

noir-dresses August 28th, 2012, 02:20 PM I think Turkish is ripe to order the A380. They have made a good brand, product, and the numbers, and additional network expansion justify a future purchase.
Momo1435 August 28th, 2012, 02:58 PM They have recently said that after comparing the A380 with the 747-8I they have come to the conclusion that they are not interested in ordering any very large airplanes at the moment. The capacity constraints at Atatürk Airport are also to be taken into account, there aren't enough gates to handle widebody airplanes.
They are not ordering any 787 or A350 for that matter, claiming that the uncertainty of both programs as the main reason to wait.
If they are going to order or lease extra widebodies soon it will be 777s or A330s.
Messi August 28th, 2012, 11:36 PM ^^ That's right. TK will need to wait the third airport to be completed before they order any wide-body aircraft. I think there is no other airport that works over-capacity like Atatürk. Istanbul will reach 45 million at the end of this year but its foreseen capacity is around 20 million.

TK will buy at least 6 widebody airplanes(A380 or 747)! These Planes will operate from the new Airport in Istanbul.
Until than TK will buy 777 and A330!

Congrats to the orders. I hardly see Havana and Caracas really working. I personally think they will only last a couple of months and then be money losing routes.
