View Full Version : Great Hadham
nick_taylor May 13th, 2004, 03:50 PM After being one of the leading members of this sub-forum during its infancy I have decided to finally start up SimCity4 again and brought Rush Hour today - I'm currently downloading a few high rise scrapers - oooohhhh :) SWFC :lolL

Rush Hour is good, you should have brought it earlier. :D
nick_taylor May 14th, 2004, 05:23 PM Its far more easier than SimCity4 was (and it was piss easy then). I went for the hard setting - but im already up to $14mn!!!! Im thinking of going for an all out planned city now with all the funds I have - a massive expansion plan to boost the population to over 2,000,000 in less than 15 years
nick_taylor May 14th, 2004, 07:11 PM Right started afresh and this is the first city of y region: Great Hadham, population: 75,000

nick_taylor May 15th, 2004, 11:57 PM I couldn't be bothered to create my own thread, but here is the latest pics from my city. Amazingly I haven't gone past the 160,000 barrier for a few odd reasons!
Commute times seem to be a massive problem. I have average commute times of around 20-30. I have a massive bus, subway, elevated rail, monorail, railway and highway network but there still seem to be massive block ups - it just doesn't add up. I also seem to have oddly 800,000 industrial jobs, 400,000 commercial jobs but only 160,000 citizens - I + C increase, but R keeps fluctuating (goes up to 180,000 and then the next second down to 2,000 people :?).
I never had this problem with the original Simcity4 whatsoever.
Well anyway a few pics:
I've been experimenting with a few little tools - like creating my own docks and canals. I think it makes for a FAR more realistic city - note the little bridges and canal tunnels. Some of the tunnels have tunnels for the side walks and also look at the multiple stairs leading up from the canals :)
http://tools.iso.port.ac.uk/cgi-bin/shelf?get=1c65c8ed7db9f3b9270351e8dea04341
This is the main artery seperating my CBD and main residential area. Note that there are 2 main roads on each side of a highway/motorway as well as a railway line. Further up the map the mess gets worse:
- 2 highways/motorways
- 4 roads
- 3 railway lines
- 1 monorail line
All the above goes in TWO DIRECTIONS - ie north - south and vice versa and all bunched up - it looks totally insane, but currently is a bit messy and I'm gonna have to tidy that up.

Another view of the canals I have made.

Here, it is possible to view the underpasses I have created. It allows an alternative to the bland bridges that can be created and looks quite cool does it not? As well as easing choke points :)
http://tools.iso.port.ac.uk/cgi-bin/shelf?get=be0eb28cc7c0ba667ec5aeb6424d2d6a
I can't remember the name of the tower in the top right of this pic, but look at the base of the tower and the canal tunnel that goes under it - pretty cool eh :)
http://tools.iso.port.ac.uk/cgi-bin/shelf?get=f61e490626257ac9ecba927da4f1acd1
This is what happens when you build docks and canals and zone and wallah - instant scrapers :)
http://tools.iso.port.ac.uk/cgi-bin/shelf?get=5c8dd98620b4f491e468a423ea974a4a
Look at this picture - you can clearly see all the roads and railway lines are not impeded by road or train traffic. It allows the trains to get to their top speed as well as the road traffic being far more fluid than a normal bridge or rail crossing. Looks far more realistic and cooler also :)
Note the train - note also that they are not normal trains - they are British High Speed Eurostars (unfortunately they don't travel at 300kph :( ) in colour and image.
Note also the length of the train - I counted 40 carriages at least (I took the screenshot early, but the train carried on for a long time as the same train off the map - looked insane, but in this image there are some 20+ carriages viewable :)

Well there ya go :)
Style™ May 16th, 2004, 12:26 AM Want me to split the posts off so that it is your own thread?
nick_taylor May 16th, 2004, 12:57 AM Yeah might as well :P
My region view - just look at all those highways for a 150k population YET traffic is still chronic!!!!!!!!!! There has to be something seriously wrong with the game engine!!!

nick_taylor May 16th, 2004, 02:12 AM Cheers :)
I have an idea for a Boston-esque "Big Dig" with western and eastern industrial estates being connected up via two massive highways and 2 rail lins going underneath - maybe a connection in the middle between the current Resi + Comm districts :)
I've got like now only 2 roads in my ENTIRE city that overlap with roads - in other words all other avenues, roads and motorways go above or below via a flyover or tunnel of the railway lines - it killed commuting city wide by a massive 30!!!!!!
Monkey May 16th, 2004, 02:27 AM Nice pics ... I'd love to get back into SimCity again. It's been over a year since I played any of them, as I sold my home computer. Unfortunately the second-hand PC I recently bought is probably too slow :(
Might be able to run SC2000 though.
nick_taylor May 16th, 2004, 02:41 PM Something weird happened....I loaded up and the population fell to around 30,000..then rocketed up to the current population of around 360k :)

nick_taylor May 16th, 2004, 09:46 PM My region is now well on the way to become large. Behold - my newest city of Much Hadham - 0 residents, but home to 700,000 industrial jobs. I have no idea how I got this figure - growth was instantaneous and I could not believe it - I downloaded the patch and its totally revolutionised my city.
Behold an updated Region Map

nick_taylor May 17th, 2004, 11:26 PM Woosh - another update, considering I've been playing this region for 3 days :) (I brought Rush Hour 4 days ago). Region well into the millions - my new city down in the right hand corner has a population of around 850,000 - considering the limitations of land its quite impressive non?

Rainier Meadows May 18th, 2004, 09:48 AM nick where did you download all those cool buildings?
nick_taylor May 18th, 2004, 11:14 AM I guess your referring to the buildings in this pic:
http://tools.iso.port.ac.uk/cgi-bin/shelf?get=d1b19c64a5d7b0f858e0ca684a1a8134
Go to www.simtropolis.com --> BAT exchange - wallah Dusktrooper has a few good buildings. But a few other towers are being made like Petronas, a Union Square look alike and hundreds of others.
The best thing I like is the Eurostar trainset which really does look like 400m+ long (thats how long the passenger trains are in real life) - longest train I have ever seen :)
nick_taylor May 18th, 2004, 04:37 PM My city names are all real and come from little villages from around where I live (Bishop's Stortford) :)

Woko May 18th, 2004, 10:52 PM nick_taylor,
How do you make a canals?
nick_taylor May 18th, 2004, 11:31 PM Oohhh - it can be a TRICKY thing to do, first of all download this pack:
http://www.simcitycentral.net/files/details.php?id=14
You might want to also download this expansion pack:
http://www.simcitycentral.net/files/details.php?id=30
Use roads to plan and map the canals - it can be confusing and quite depressing - but keep persisting!! ALSO - MAKE SURE YOUR LAND IS TOTALLY FLAT!!!!!!!!
Heres another picture - unfortunately I aint had the time (I'm on fieldtrip work ALL this week and I have several exams next week as well :O) to show a cool intersection I have made, I also made an underground tunnel - they were hard to do a year ago when SC4 first came out, and they still are, but they are possible - I have a massive one that stretches from what is the industrial centre to a new core :)
Well anyway another piccie for you all to drool over - the bridge is a real life bridge! And yes that clock does say year 76 - constant expansion + high taxes enable me to continue on going :)
http://www.xpphotoalbum.com/data/500/10484canal_bridge.JPG?529
I'm also trying to create a massive commieblock area - chemical waste dumps thank you :)
Woko May 18th, 2004, 11:36 PM thanks :)
nick_taylor May 19th, 2004, 06:33 PM Time for an update of my region. This is a pic of a dual carriageway junction - highly effective in most instances - it reduces the majort problems of bottlenecks.

The Eastern Entrance to the Blackwall Tunnel - not a major crossing yet, but once I develop the next door city it will be a MAJOR thoroughfare
http://www.xpphotoalbum.com/data/500/10484Blackwall_Tunnel_Eastern_Exit.JPG?2638
Western Exit of the Blackwall Tunnel - this side is part of the major industrial complex which spans already some 3 cities and about 2million industrial jobs

In this picture is a VERY FAMOUS landmark - can any of you guess what it is?

A dock island and really only a test for my next city (this land area will become the Bishops Stortford & Hertford Park - it will extend from this city and spread over 5 cities :)

wolkenkrabber May 21st, 2004, 04:14 AM did you ever thing about to get the idustry quadrapler?
nick_taylor May 21st, 2004, 09:36 AM I actually tried that out on one city months back and then I stopped playing Simcity4. I don't think I still have it on my system, considering if you look at my region map - 3/4 of all urban development is industrial
AndrewC May 21st, 2004, 04:23 PM How do you manage to be such a stud and yet a huge geeky game designer at the same time nick :D
nick_taylor May 21st, 2004, 11:47 PM Game designer :?
I actually haven't touched a single game since X-Mas and that was Max Payne 2, before X-Mas, the last time I touched a game was Simcity4 and that was back last summer. I've only just started it up again cause I was bored and all uni life is beginning its wind down.
SimCity to me is piss easy - its basic micro/macro economics slapped together and its just so easy it doesn't dare to require contemplation :)
Tonight I thought I would play an hour and two..........and......wallah :

it's the internet. i could be a 16-year-old girl tonight if i wanted!
looks nice, but the use of the word "mega" is trademarked by me. cease and desist or i'll nuke your city into a nice glass beach.

In the right there's a one way highway. Were you downloaded it? Simtropolis?
Cyril May 30th, 2004, 09:21 AM Where can we download those underpasses and one-way highways please? Those are exciting :D
nick_taylor May 30th, 2004, 10:57 AM The one way highways are tricks...........I've uploaded a tutorial that I downloaded elsewhere here for you to attempt them - quite asthetic and they can get insanely busy. The underpasses are actual tunnels just carved into the ground
When you start the download rename it from "shelf" to whatever you like :)

Style™ May 30th, 2004, 04:51 PM Commie blocks!!!!
For some reason when I plop residential buildings they NEVER work. Anyone know why?
nick_taylor May 30th, 2004, 05:16 PM I never plop buildings that are not commie blocks - those last 2 builds have been "pruned" to that shape. In the screenshot of the european style apartments - I have placed 1x1 tiles of small parks to stop "growth spread" ie - they are forced to develop into 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, etc lots. The Commie block one was complete fluke - just the rapid growth and conditions meant that it developed like that :)
Manuel June 5th, 2004, 01:11 PM how do you do underpasses Nick ?
LSyd June 11th, 2004, 08:28 PM http://www.xpphotoalbum.com/data/500/10484mega_cluster.JPG?3778
what's the first building from the left, very tall with huge antenna, so i can download it? ooooh, it's sweet.
