It wasnt a problem for me as I could just walk in and look like I know where I was going. Anyway If I was stopped I would just give the innocent reply that I wanted to get a view out. Its the best answer I can think of and it sometimes works.;)

huaiwei December 9th, 2003, 01:02 PM Finally found a picture of Alexandra Point:
http://www.rsp.com.sg/image/office/ALEX_PT/Alexpt1.jpg
"Rising 25-storeys, Alexandra Point commands a view of the West Coast of Singapore. The building evolved from a square plan that is rotated along a vertical axis. It tapers at the top and is crowned by a distinctive steel pyramidal roof that can be seen from afar. As a symbolic center, the tower is designed to address all sides equally. By controlling the vertical transformation and modulating the façade patterns, a strong corporate image is created."
RafflesCity December 9th, 2003, 10:46 PM Thank you!! :D

RafflesCity December 25th, 2003, 08:54 PM Hey guys, I want to know your opinion of the OCBC Centre..architecturally or just as a symbol of Singapore.
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/503/103ocbc3.jpg
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/photopost/data/503/103ocbc2.jpg
btw I think they recently installed a signage on top of it that lights up at night.
Cliff December 26th, 2003, 04:57 AM Yes, it's nice and red.:D
paw December 26th, 2003, 05:27 AM Am I mistaken or does older folks refer to OCBC as the calculator last time? Because it really looks like the keys of the calculator which is standing upright.:D
IMO, OCBC is a major symbol of the Singapore during its developing days. A simple skyscraper of immense importance in the past through the tough days of making Singapore known to the world stage. Though the building is old, it is still very functional and OCBC still has its HQ there, so I reckon it will be here for a long while to come, unless OCBC has other ideas.
huaiwei December 26th, 2003, 12:09 PM Yes, paw. It was quite well known as the calculator here, esp the older folks ;)
And I do agree that it was like the solid backing Singapore really needed during the early years of development. It is a building with an attitude, and even thou it is sadly overshadowed by the taller and sleeker looking ones today, it has remained the tallest and longest serving HQ building of all time? :D
Cliff December 26th, 2003, 04:46 PM OCBC was the tallest in South East Asia right?

IMO, OCBC is a major symbol of the Singapore during its developing days. A simple skyscraper of immense importance in the past through the tough days of making Singapore known to the world stage. Though the building is old, it is still very functional and OCBC still has its HQ there, so I reckon it will be here for a long while to come, unless OCBC has other ideas.
I agree. Somehow the image of this building strongly suggests Singapore, and everyone should recognize it instantly. It looks powerful and I think IM Pei wanted to make it look futuristic and solid for its time. Its always been 'there'. Well at least its older than me:D
Heres an old pic

Cliff December 27th, 2003, 03:18 AM The Gateway is really beautiful!
I always related OCBC, Singapore Land and Standard Chartered as the 'big three':D
paw December 27th, 2003, 05:11 AM Wait a minute, Cliff... Did you say StanChart? It has triggered something in me... I believe the current UOB Plaza 2 (the shorter one) or the shorter of the three by the river (in the picture) could be StanChart. I remembered the building because when I was young, I believed I had savings in StanChart and I have always liked the building.;) Perhaps UOB bought the building and developed it to Plaza 2 of today. As for Singapore Land Tower, that has been Singapore Land HQ for ages and it has been overshadowed by more artistically more interesting buildings in MayBank and OUB.
For those interested in the portfolio of Singapore Land's properties, these are what it owns... Singapore Land Tower, Clifford Centre, SGX CENTRE 2, The Gateway (we were just mentioning it), ABACUS Plaza & Compaq Centre, Tampines Plaza with associated properties in Marina Square, Novena Square and West Mall.
huaiwei December 27th, 2003, 08:28 AM Huh? Isnt StanChat 6 Battery Road now? :?

No no no.:)
StanChart is now 6 Battery Road, its the all brown building. They are two entirely different buildings. UOB built UOB Tower 2 and has ever since owned it.
Which is the building that you liked? Is it the brown one or the eight sided one?
Standard Charted building was built much later.
huaiwei December 27th, 2003, 03:50 PM At the time that Stanchat was built, they even proclaimed it the most major British building in Singapore! :D
paw December 29th, 2003, 08:42 AM Ok, let me clear some things out with you lot, since you have been staring hard and long at some of these buildings far far longer than I have (though I believe I can't be that bad, since I do watch buildings and constructions;)).
StanChart is No.6 Battery Road. Is it in the picture posted by RC? If not, can someone pull it out from their database for me?;)
I could be mistaken about the eight-sided building's original owner being StanChart, but then again it could have been UOB all the while. It is true that UOB retained the eight-sided building and developed it further (ie not tearing down and building it from scratch) to be UOB Plaza 2 of today, right?
Cliff December 29th, 2003, 10:17 AM 6 Battery Road is the brown building with the words 'Capitaland' on top. Next to UOB Plaza 2

Not a building that would be built today so IMO it's a symbol of its time and of Singapore.

RafflesCity January 13th, 2004, 03:31 PM This is a building I really like. As far as Singapore skyscraper stories go, it is almost as symbolic as the OCBC in being a landmark of the financial district. One look at it and you know you are in Shenton Way.

CityDev said to have secured tenant amid stiff competition from many new buildings
http://business-times.asia1.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2004-02-17/b17b-231830.jpg
WILL IBM Towers be renamed Fuji Xerox Tower? There's a real chance of that happening now that Fuji Xerox is said to have inked a deal for about 93,000 sq ft of space at the office block at Anson Road, sources told BT.
This is one of the biggest office leasing deals in recent months and is somewhat of a coup for owner City Developments, which secured Fuji Xerox as tenant amid stiff competition from the many new office towers coming up on the island, including the New Downtown.
CityDev's feat seems to have countered the trend seen in the past few years of MNCs moving from the city to business parks, foregoing the conveniences and 'prestige' of a downtown address for the lower costs of the industrial suburbs.
IBM was the former anchor tenant of CityDev's building at Anson Road but has moved in stages to Changi Business Park over the past couple of years. Its lease at the Anson Road building ran out at the end of last year, according to an earlier report.
The IT giant had been the anchor tenant at its namesake building since 1986.
Fuji Xerox is understood to have inked a lease with CityDev at a monthly rental rate of not more than $3 per square foot, in line with current market rates.
The Tokyo-based company, set up in 1962 as a joint venture between Japan's Fuji Photo Film Co Ltd and Britain's Xerox Ltd, is expected to move its operations out of several existing downtown locations in Singapore, including Suntec City and SIA Building, to IBM Towers, suggested market watchers.
In addition to grouping its current locations into one, the group may also be providing for future expansion.
The 93,000 sq ft leased to Fuji Xerox accounts for about a quarter of IBM Towers' total area. The property is a part 15-storey/part 38-storey freehold office building near the western fringe of Singapore's CBD.

Another big urban renewal project is for a Raffles Centre, modelled on the Rockefeller Plaza in New York, in the vicinity of Bras Basah and Stamford Roads. The project, which was temporarily shelved in 1973 due principally to shortage of skilled labour, soaring construction costs and the overloaded nature of the building industry, was revived in March 1975 and architects are now proceeding with detailed planning.

RafflesCity April 5th, 2004, 01:12 PM and this is what it looks like now, completed in 1986 and designed by IM Pei.
http://www.pcfandp.com/a/p/7314/7314-1.jpg
http://www.pcfandp.com/a/p/7314/7314-2.jpg
from Pei's website:
"Raffles City was undertaken in a climate of nation building shortly after Singapore's independence. Upon completion in 1986, the 370,000 m2 project was the largest private commercial development in Southeast Asia with the tallest building in the Far East, the world's tallest hotel, and the largest continuous concrete pour ever attempted.
The complex includes a 39-story office tower, a 1,200-room, 72-story tourist hotel and a more exclusive hotel with 800 guest rooms in two angled 27-story towers. All components are interconnected and rise from a seven-story podium housing shops, health/sports and convention facilities. A central atrium provides the building with its own climate controlled town square; in both density and activity, Raffles is itself a mixed-used city.
An innovative aluminum curtain wall unifies the exterior. The mass of the building is shifted away from the historic Raffles Hotel and toward the grassy Padang. Like a piece of monumental sculpture, the tall cam-shaped tower mysteriously changes profile, appearing curved or orthogonal from different perspectives. No attempt was made to integrate with existing low-rise neighbors of uncertain urban renewal fate. The project was designed to look ahead, not back, and relies on contrast to express its role as a centerpiece of Singapore's redeveloped future."

Newton 18 is a luxurious freehold development located along Newton Road, in Singapore's prime residential District 11. This development caters mainly to discerning urban dwellers with a fast paced executive lifestyle.
Social amenities are readily available from Orchard Road, the main shopping, entertainment and hotel belt in Singapore, all a 5-minute drive away. In addition, a variety of recreational facilities can also be found in the vicinity. These include the Cairnhill Arts Centre, the Tanglin Club and the American Club. Popular clubs and pubs along River Valley, Clarke Quay and Boat Quay are also just a mere 10-minute drive away.

huaiwei May 1st, 2004, 12:18 AM It is already completed what.....why is it in this section?
huaiwei May 1st, 2004, 12:19 AM Completed projects should not be in this section. And how dare you start a thread with no pictures!!! :bash: :D
redstone May 1st, 2004, 03:35 AM Is it completed?

Finally found a pic:

heirloom May 1st, 2004, 03:51 AM i absolutely love the lincoln modern! it was in the papers that it was grossly overpriced - like 500k over valuation.. but who could not succumb to the philippe starck toilets and double height ceilings!
redstone May 1st, 2004, 03:55 AM The Lincoln Modern is just one example of many stunning modern skyscrapers in the district.Perhaps someone should take the time to take pictures of them?
RafflesCity May 1st, 2004, 10:34 PM Yes. The Projects section is for newly announced/ under construction projects where we want to follow their progress.
It would be good to ensure that a building is completed before creating a thread in this section. Its also good to have some pics ready. This will be merged with the skyscrapers thread soon.:)

RafflesCity May 2nd, 2004, 10:16 AM nah..it was by baqthier;)
redstone May 2nd, 2004, 10:18 AM I guess the multi-faceted facade has something to do with feng shui ; Jalan Sultan 'runs directly' into it?
RafflesCity May 2nd, 2004, 10:20 AM It is 8-sided and it also consists of 8 segments
redstone May 2nd, 2004, 10:26 AM I didn't notice that!Thanks!:D
And the tower is supported by eight giant columns?;)

TYW May 3rd, 2004, 04:33 PM is it inspired by a pagoda?? it looks like one at night
huaiwei May 4th, 2004, 07:54 PM It very well might be, although it seems more to be inspired by kelongs with those stilts?
Where is that huge night picture of this building?
eyetoeye May 5th, 2004, 11:57 AM Wasn't it inspired by a stack of coins?
Anyway, i really love this building, though i think it looks a tad weird. It's very visible from my school.
huaiwei May 5th, 2004, 12:25 PM Wasn't it inspired by a stack of coins?
Anyway, i really love this building, though i think it looks a tad weird. It's very visible from my school.
Temasek Tower was the one inspired by a stack of coins what....
eyetoeye May 5th, 2004, 12:31 PM Dunno leh.. that's what my mom told me anyway....
huaiwei May 5th, 2004, 12:57 PM Dunno leh.. that's what my mom told me anyway....
Hmm...maybe they are thinking of stacking the higher denomination coins on top of smaller ones? :D
RafflesCity May 6th, 2004, 04:38 AM This building is similar in many ways to Taipei 101.
huaiwei May 6th, 2004, 05:02 AM But Taipei 101 was more influenced by pagodas, while this one is influenced by kelongs?
RafflesCity May 6th, 2004, 05:11 AM kelongs? I think I'm beginning to like it even more;)
btw it was designed by an American architect.
huaiwei May 6th, 2004, 05:33 AM American architect?? You sure or not...I heard its done by a Singaporean!!
eyetoeye May 6th, 2004, 12:11 PM Nobody seems to be sure about anything about this building!
huaiwei May 6th, 2004, 02:04 PM Dunno leh...but I am quite freaking damn sure a local designed it.....it once had a Chinese name based on the local company which designed and built it! :)
RafflesCity May 7th, 2004, 09:51 PM nay..maybe in collaboration but I just recently read that it was an American firm. Will try to find out which one or maybe redstone can do it
huaiwei May 7th, 2004, 10:41 PM hmm...according to my own s.com....the architects were:
architect: Architects 61
design architect: Paul Rudolph
I suppose we are both right then? Hoooraaahh!!! :D
RafflesCity May 9th, 2004, 10:02 PM yup..it would be hard of an American to conceive of such a design without some local input.
