Perth in vogue with the Seine thinkers
DAILE PEPPER
Has Perth shrugged off its tag as being a remote and backward city, emerging as the new Paris?
Style bible Australian Vogue poses this question on why all things Perth are in. Overnight we have gone from daggy to divine.
Its June edition says: "Western Australia is hot. And as if synchronised, a brilliant bunch of talent from designers and models to painters, musicians and architects is taking the world by storm."
Models such as Gemma Ward and Nicole Trunfio are making their mark internationally and giving the likes of French model Laetitia Casta a run for her money. Some of the world's top fashion photographers are from Perth and designers such as Michelle Jank and Aurelio Costarella are at the top of the game.
WA's music scene is vibrant, with original bands including The Sleepy Jackson, Eskimo Joe, End of Fashion, The Hampdens and Little Birdy making their mark. And movie star Heath Ledger and TV successes Melissa George and Rove McManus.
Elle boutique owner Wendy Marshall said Perth's fashion scene had always been better than Sydney's and as good as Melbourne.
But Perth had only just made it into the consciousness of those in the east. Now everyone was interested when something or someone new came out of the city.
"In reality we're not really anything like Paris," she said. "They have got hundreds and hundreds of years on us. But there are a lot of good things coming out of Perth fashion-wise."
Perth model talent scout Christine Fox said Perth was now on the map.
"We are just starting to shine and then industry is starting to take notice," she said. Fashion designer Michelle Jank said there was plenty of talk in Sydney about Perth. "It's huge," she said. "People are kind of intrigued because a lot of people haven't been to Perth."
Musicians and designers agreed Perth's isolation allowed creativity to flourish. But it sometimes meant leaving to find greater success.
Eskimo Joe drummer Stuart McLeod said the list of WA bands making waves over east was long. "It's almost becoming a bit of a bad joke, 'not another Perth band stealing all the limelight'," he said.
Premier Geoff Gallop always rejected the Dullsville tag but relished the new comparison.
"I'm very pleased that at last the creative talents of Western Australia are getting recognised," he said.
JayT May 19th, 2004, 12:27 AM Perth has always been on the map - mainly for being such a remote large city.
From experience with many people from the UK who visit Australia I can say that Perth is most often their favorite for some reason. Everyone I know from the UK who has visited has absolutely LOVED Perth over and above every other city.
It is good to see that Perth is starting to shine though, too long has it been overshadowed by SydBrisMel food, fashion ect.

A-brain May 19th, 2004, 01:25 AM LOL .. SydMel I think you mean JAYT - I don't think there is a Perth person who would say Perth has every overshadowed by Brisbane's huge legacy of Food or Fashion Culture.
Anyway - Perth people don't give a rats either way about trying to emulate other cities or trying to compete - which is what makes the place so great.
It has a wealth of assets other cities can't touch - including that relaxed, cool but confident attitude coming from a city thats blessed and is so far from everywhere else.. they know this so they can sit back and smile.
And everyone who goes there - including me - leaves a part that want's to stay behind. For me it's classic Catch-22, if It wasn't so far away I'd easily live there - but it's partly the distance that makes it so great.

Actually, I read a statistic the other day which I recall said that 38% of people born in the UK who are living in Australia, live in Perth! I also wonder what the paticular attractions are that the UKers find so appealing.
I know I loved the climate and lack of traffic most when I lived there...plus the cleanliness and modernity and all the new buildings and spiffy urban renewal areas and new suburbs and...well a lot of stuff! :)
Amaruu May 19th, 2004, 03:48 AM Well basically, if you break it down, it could make perfect sense why alot of English (London) people are flocking to Perth. They are obviously wanting to leave London for a reason, so by choosing Perth, they are choosing a city that is anything but Londonish.
Cost of living:
London very expensive
Perth relatively cheap
Weather:
London has an image of inclement weather
Perth is warm and sunny
Space:
London, as is the whole of England, too cramped for space.
Perth, well just take a look at the size of WA.
Lifestyle:
London is frantic
Perth is relaxed
Everyone knows that the poms love soccer, cricket and rugby union. Its been well highlighted that Perth is a rugby union city, the Perth Glory have dominated the NSL in recent years and WA has always been a strong cricket state. So, the sports crazy Londoners get their sports fix as well in Perth.
Perth has arrived??? Good to see.
BrizzyChris May 19th, 2004, 07:43 AM Perth is an AFL city, not rugby union.
Homeroids May 19th, 2004, 01:25 PM Perth is an AFL city, not rugby union.
Doh, so it is but I think to read between the lines is that Union has probably the strongest following in Perth compared to other AFL dominated states due to large numbers of SA, NZ, and UK ex-pats. WA has the highest proportion of people who were born overseas.
chrisaus May 19th, 2004, 04:19 PM South African And Australia will be playing at Subiaco Oval In July should sell out like all the past games with an electric atmosphere, union is definitely big in the west
Billy the Kid May 19th, 2004, 09:18 PM South African And Australia will be playing at Subiaco Oval In July should sell out like all the past games with an electric atmosphere, union is definitely big in the west
Seems that the recent migrants( mostly all white I might add) from South Africa and the UK would be the only reason for the imported games getting a larger following than before.
Homeroids May 20th, 2004, 01:09 AM Yeah, that's what we are saying. There are quite a few mixed SAers here to. Best friend s one along with a whole clan of them :)
Amaruu May 20th, 2004, 01:12 AM Yea I know WA is an AFL state I follow AFL. What I meant was that as far as the English are concerned, they would get their fix of Union in WA because there seems to be enough support for Union over in the West.
JayT May 20th, 2004, 08:41 AM LOL .. SydMel I think you mean JAYT - I don't think there is a Perth person who would say Perth has every overshadowed by Brisbane's huge legacy of Food or Fashion Culture.
Well this is off the point but I have to reply - you understand.
I'm sure you have never heard of Brisbanes many fashion designers who are making inroads internationally like, Sass & Bide, Elliomoda, Easton Pearson, Lorna Jane and many more.
Brisbane is also home of the Australian Fashion Design Awards.
Also Queensland food is famous, what has Melbourne ever given us? The Lamington or the Meat pie?
Queensland architecture is also unique as is modern Queensland architecture.
So...There!
Now back to PERTH!!

Amaruu May 20th, 2004, 10:17 AM Lol.
Billy the Kid May 20th, 2004, 10:55 AM After Melbourne and Sydney, Perth is by far the most vibrant and exciting capital city in Australia.

Pas July 5th, 2004, 07:13 PM Perth is one of the most 'stylish' cities in Australia in my opinion and its true what the article said, there's a lot of creative people from Perth, musicians, actors, architects etc.
chrisaus July 9th, 2004, 06:50 PM WA rides biggest boom since the 60s
The WA economy grew last year at its fastest pace since the boom of the 1960s and the good times are tipped to continue.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA said in its quarterly review released yesterday that the State's economy expanded 7.5 per cent in the 2003-04 financial year.
Chamber senior economist John Nicolaou said if the chamber's assessment was borne out by official data, it would be the strongest economic performance in the 15 years records have been kept.
He said it would be the strongest growth rate since the 1960s when growth was estimated to have been about 8 per cent in some years.
The robust growth had been driven by business investment related to the burgeoning demand for WA's commodity exports and by robust consumer spending.
But the strong outlook was not likely to prompt an interest rate rise soon, with data showing the number of housing loans approved nationally fell more than expected in May.
WA's economic growth in 2003-04 was more than double that for the nation as a whole, with the chamber estimating the Australian economy grew 3.75 per cent.
WA's growth is forecast to moderate but it is still expected to outperform the rest of the country.
The chamber expects the State's economy to expand 4.5 per cent in both 2004-5 and 2005-06, while the national economy is expected to grow2.75 per cent in 2004-05, a figure below the Federal Government Budget forecast of 3.5 per cent.
The chamber said WA's growth would be underpinned by further strengthening in exports as key resource projects come on stream.
"A stronger external sector will, however, be offset by an expected moderation in the domestic economy," it said.
Mr Nicolaou said that while the exceptional growth of the 2003-04 year would not be repeated, growth of 4.5 per cent was still strong and would show the economy building on recent gains.
The chamber's forecasts for WA are more positive than those of Access Economics, which earlier this week estimated the State's economy had grown 4.7 per cent in 2003-04, falling to a still solid 3.7 per cent in 2004-05.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said national housing finance approvals dropped 2.6 per cent in May from April, against a market forecast for a one per cent decline.
Economists said the fall in loan approvals would be enough to keep the Reserve Bank from raising rates as it added to the view that the housing sector was slowing in an orderly way. Housing finance has fallen for the past eight months, showing the two interest rate rises late last year had the desired effect of cooling an overheated market.
RBC Capital Markets senior economist Su-Lin Ong said housing finance was still well above the level that the Reserve Bank was comfortable with and the decline in borrowing would have to continue for the rest of the year to ensure no interest rate rise. Some economists said it appeared finance approvals were stabilising after falling more sharply at the start of the year.
