***** February 5th, 2010, 03:13 PM Veliki tabor
Veliki Tabor castle, located in the Hrvatsko zagorje region, is numbered among the most attractive and best-preserved monuments of medieval fortification architecture in Croatia and in this part of Europe.
Veliki Tabor (Great Encampment) is a fortified medieval aristocratic hilltop burg situated in the northwestern part of the Hrvatsko zagorje region in the municipality of Desinić.
The oldest sections of this top-category cultural monument date from the 12th century, while its current appearance dates from the 19th century. Veliki Tabor castle was owned by many prominent Croatian families, such as the Counts Celjski, and it was after their possession that the unhappy legend of Veronika Desinićka emerged.
The castle covers over 3,000 square metres of floor space and its interior contains, among other things, galleries adorned with circular columns, a court chapel, a wine cellar with a large winepress, a large well and the most attractive part of Veliki Tabor – the grand rustic hall.
The castle houses many collections, such as those featuring old vehicles and pottery, and a well stocked ethnographic collection. A noteworthy visual arts gallery, a presentation of the first medications factory, presentations of fencing, musketeers and the armour of the “wretched knight” are only a few of the fascinating exhibits in this engrossing museum and excursion grounds in the Hrvatsko zagorje region, Croatia.

***** February 5th, 2010, 03:18 PM castle Ozalj
On a limestone, above the peaceful Kupa river, the Old Castle the symbol of Ozalj and the heart of its historical development was built. Inside its walls as well as in the city area one can see a lot of prehistoric, old Roman and medieval archeological finds. The first written record about the city dates from 1244. The owners of the castle were the most powerful aristocratic families: Babonic, Frankopan, Zrinski. In the 17th century goes Ozalj as an unofficial Croatian residence through its most glistening period. Viceroy Petar Zrinski has his residence here, and the literary-linguistic circle of Ozalj "rules" over the cultural life. With the tragic execution of Viceroy Petar Zrinski and Count Fran Krsto Frankopan in 1671 the blossom of the city was interrupted by force. In the 18th century, the major renovation of the castle was made by the new owners (Perlas and Batthyani) who gave the previously gothic castle its contemporary baroque form. By its value belongs the Old Castle Ozalj to the first monument category. A rich collection of the Home Museum is located there.

***** February 5th, 2010, 03:21 PM Čakovec-castle Zrinski
When in 1546 the Zrinski Counts acquired possession of Medimurje, Governor Nikola Zrinski rebuilt the Cakovec Castrum into a strong Renaissance fortress in the face of the Turkish threat. The new single-storey palace was encircled by a system of strong defence walls; next to the existing walls with semicircular towers Renaissance bastions were erected. The fortress surrounded by water ditches was linked to the land by a long wooden bridge.
Following the earthquake of 1738, the Czech Counts of Althan, who were then the lords of Medimurje, restored the palace and the fortress according the design of the court architect Anton Erhard Martinelli. The palace was rebuilt in the baroque style and the Renaissance tower pulled down, while a new one was erected on the palace fortifications. The new, imposing two-storey baroque palace with a courtyard has preserved its original appearance to the present date. In 1791, Medimurje was purchased by the Festetic Counts who in the period from 1855 to 1870 used a part of the Old Town palace as a sugar factory. During the Second World War, the northern wing of the palace was damaged in bombing.
The reconstruction following the war destruction lasted from 1945 to 1948. Through the establishment of the Museum in the Old Town fortress in 1954 and its occupancy of the Old Town palace in 1968, the Cakovec Museum of Medimurje became the owners of the Old Town of Cakovec, thus taking on the responsibility of its restoration. The restoration efforts have been continued to the present day under expert supervision and authorisation of the Ministry of Culture's Board for the Protection of Croatia's Cultural and Natural Heritage, Conservation Section.

***** February 5th, 2010, 10:19 PM Castle Brod na Kupi
The Zrinski castle is a cultural monument of the "first category". In 1651 Petar Zrinski had its castle built in Brod na Kupi, probably on the foundations of an earlier castle built by the Frankopan family in the 15th century. In order to ensure better use of the natural resources, Petar Zrinski moved the administrative and judicial authorities from their earlier seats in the Vinodolski area (Hreljin, Bribir, Ledenice) to Brod na Kupi. Today the Zrinski castle is a simple three-storey stone building with a pyramidal roof. It appears that the third storey was originally made of wood. On the ground floor, the original arrangement of rooms has been preserved, while the layout of the chambers on the first and second floors has been changed by subsequent reconstructions. An underground passage leads from the ground floor to the Kupica river and the nearby cave. This interesting building once combined the fortifying and housing functions, which makes it particularly valuable. The Zrinski castle is finaly becoming the heritage and forestry museum with several thematic floors devoted to the goranian tradition of life and basic historical facts.

The Odescalchi Castle is the central building situated in the medieval town of Ilok, housing the famous old Ilok cellars and the Museum of the Town of Ilok.
The Odescalchi Castle is an impressive building built on the foundations of the castle of King Nikola Iločki from the 15th century. Nikola's medieval castle with the entire Ilok estate, which at the time occupied the greater part of Srijem, were given by Emperor Leopold to Pope Innocent XI Odescalchi and his family as a reward for their help in liberating Ilok from the Turks. The Pope's nephews, aristocrats from Italy, expanded the castle and changed its style. The castle was eventually rebuilt in the Baroque-Classicist style.

Chatedral in Trogir
Cathedral of St. Lawrence
The most famous monument in Trogir, and one of the most important architectural monuments in Dalmatia, is certainly the Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Katedrala sv. Lovre), called the Cathedral of St. John (sv. Ivan) by the people after the city patron, a contemporary of King Zvonimir and King Koloman. Efforts of generations through four centuries and many great names were invested into its building. It seems that it was erected on the foundations of an older basilica destroyed during the sack by the Saracens in 1123. It is considered that its construction started in 1213. The Trogir Cathedral is a Romanesque-Gothic basilica with a nave and two aisles, three semi-circular apses and a vaulted interior above which rises the Campanile. Romanesque massiveness and Gothic elegance have been harmoniously combined in its architecture. Heavy piers separate the wide central nave from the aisles. All have circular vaults. The aisles have Gothic ribs, and the nave was vaulted later (in the 15th century) also in a Gothic style. The cross vaults and the earlier flat terraces above the aisles were of Apulian influence. The outside wall is divided by pilasters and decorated with Romanesque blind arcades. A large vestibule was added in the 15th century, and the artistically executed Gothic rosette on the western facade is from the same period. The Radovan's Portal, finished in 1240, is a monumental and perhaps unique work of this great Croatian artist, of whom the inscription on the base of the lunette says he is "the best of all in this artisanship". It is the peak of Dalmatian medieval plastic art.

Radovan's portal is the western portal, engraved with the year of 1240th. Portal was completed in the 14th century, consisting of sculptures and reliefs, with about a hundred characters.

Rocky031 September 4th, 2010, 10:48 PM Castle Eltz,Vukovar
Currently under reconstruction
Eltz Manor is a castle in Vukovar, Croatia. It was originally built between the period of 1749 to 1751 by the House of Eltz and was gradually extended over time. Eltz is a prominent Catholic German noble family with ties to Croatia since it acquired the Lordship of Vukovar in 1736.
The manor was confiscated by the communists, and the Eltz family had left the country by the late 1920s. In the 1990s, Jakob Eltz returned to the country. The manor, however, suffered a great deal of damage during the Croatian War of Independence, when it was bombarded by the Yugoslav People's Army. It is now owned by the Vukovar City Museum.

***** September 8th, 2010, 02:30 PM The Church of Our Lady of Jerusalem at Trški Vrh
The Church of Our Lady of Jerusalem at Trški Vrh. Built between 1750 and 1761, it is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in this part of Croatia. Although baroque as1 a period in art encompasses the time when feudalism was at its peak, the Church of Our Lady of Jerusalem was built by the pious townspeople and villagers as their votive church. The church was built in order to safeguard a statue of Mary brought from Jerusalem. Even before the church was built, the statue of the Virgin Mary helped many people in times of hardship so the people believed it had miraculous powers. Those miracles were the source of their faith, prayers and gratitude and the reason why they built the church with such persistence. Since 13 August 1761 when the church was consecrated, it has been a gathering point and votive church for pilgrims and remains so even today.
The very serenity and the beauty of the inside of the church are inspiring with its elaborately decorated altars from the Zagreb workshop of Anton Merz, its artistic paintings by Anton Lerchinger of Rogatec, and its organ by artisan Anton Römer of Graz. The church is surrounded by an octagonal wall and a small tower containing a chapel was built on each corner. The chapels are the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Chapel of St Emerich, Chapel of St Isidore the Peasant and the Chapel of St John and St Paul, the Martyrs. Next to the wall that surrounds the church stands the Chapel of Resurrection, the final of the fourteen stops of the Cross.
In 1898, the parish priest Stjepan Vukovinski had the wall rebuilt. The sides of the wall were once decorated with frescos representing the miracles of Our Lady of Jerusalem. The old frescos were restored by the painter Lovro Sirnik of Trški Vrh.
The wall is used for processions, but it is also a place for individual prayer and the spiritual fulfilling of vows, and it is believed that the Virgin Mary will offer help to all who believe in her.

Rose city is the largest preserved castle in Slavonia and one of the largest in Croatia. The ruins of the castle bear witness to the culture developed in the region since the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
It is believed that the town was named after the place Duzluk (few miles from ruins) which in Turkish means wild rose.

Euphrasius basilica
The most valuable cultural monument in Porec. It was built on the remains of an earlier tri-naval basilica, in the first half of the 6th century, during the period of Bishop Euphrasius, whose name it bears. Visitors' tours are possible everyday except during religious rituals. It is possible to climb up to the steeple and view Porec and its surroundings. The complex of the Euphrasian Basilica represents a significant global monument acknowledged by UNESCO organisation in the year 1997.

erbse July 8th, 2011, 06:48 PM I must put the link on post where the pictures where originally published or what?
Yes, you have to. And I am surprised you obviously aren't able to read the announcement I just posted.
Either edit and credit your photos on the last page properly or I'll delete them (the one with the swimming complex already vanished, it doesn't belong here.)

***** July 21st, 2011, 05:18 PM Dvigrad castle
In the beginning there were two castles, which were gradually merged into one city that was abandoned in the 17th century
Dvigrad means two cities, in the figurative meaning of two castles:)

Fortress Gračanica near Nova Gradiška is one of many smaller fortresses built in Slavonia region during the Ottoman invasion. It is assumed that it was built in at the end of 14.th or early 15.th century by local noble family Deževići.From its 13 meters tall tower (it was taller by few meters before locals started to use rocks from the fortress to construct their homes) you can see fortress Dolac, and from that fortress you can see fortress Velika. These fortresses were used to signal any Ottoman incoming invasion. Not far from fortress Gračanica are 2 smaller tower probably somehow connected to the fortress.

peter871 May 5th, 2012, 10:22 PM These are from the place where I live: Novi Dvori (Curia Nova) is my favourite: The english park with nice curves surrounding the manor has a neogothic chapel in it. The whole idea of a romantic park resembles the inner world of emotions that one man has in himself so the true "aristocratness" of this place would be that it tells you about the higher spheres of a human being. That would be the key to this estate (and every other romantic park), although this place is more famous for its owner who was the viceroy of Croatia.

Another one is Lužnica. This castle is known for being owned by Levin Rauch, another viceroy of Croatia, though very unpopular. The english park has a nice pond and a 250 years old plane tree. Both parks have centuries-old oak and other trees.
