Thats just the branding, Urban Edge was a little clunky ; )
buggedboy February 5th, 2010, 10:17 PM That looks brilliant, particularly the heartbreaking fature about the Lime St/Renshaw Street/Berry Street war zone. Keep up the good work.

Cheers - also, to let everyone know the online magazine is largely submission articles for consideration (I look after the design, graphics and general online management and running of the mag at the moment)
So anything you feel strongly about guys please get in touch and we can look at producing a feature provided the issue is relevant and pressing.
**There will also be an archive produced each quarter allowing the previous issues to be downloaded as PDF.

Was it made in Manchester?

Mr.Someone February 6th, 2010, 02:31 AM I see our good old Lewis's is being backstabbed again. I am sorry but I have worked there and it is an independent family run company nowadays, right down to a T. As I have only said about a trillion times Vergo recognises the problems regarding the store and it is somthing which Vergo will rectify WHEN the Central Village development starts. "Lewis's will be improving - not moving" is the slogan. And anyhow, We have updated the 1st Floor fashion floor this year... to include young up and coming designers (mainly from the uni of Liverpool)
Sorry I am in a fustrated mood at the moment, so rant over. My apoligies if anyone gets upset but I have mentioned all this before
Gareth February 6th, 2010, 02:33 AM So how's Lewis's being 'backstabbed' again?
21C Liverpool February 6th, 2010, 02:51 AM Was it made in Manchester?

Yep. For now.
My freelance efforts are based there until April. At which point frontend and Urban Edge with it will become Liverpool based.
Mr.Someone February 6th, 2010, 02:52 AM "looking more today like it has just been sat at the bottom of the Mersey for a few years with its stained and miserable appearance" and the use of vocab such as "holds on" - We make the effort, I would like to add, we spend alot of time on the store -
Everytime I read a comment on Lewis's outside of the store it seems like the last time that person went into the shop must have been around 10 years ago. We tried to reopen more floors in the 2000s, it didn't work - The manchester store had up to the 4th floor open up till when it shut - problem was getting people up there - There was even a huge toy department on the 3rd floor in 2001 - alot of money went into that - but as I say it was hard getting people to go upwards.
Then people moan that we don't make the effort to expand and to make matters worse people speak as if loyal staff's jobs are on the line. Some staff have been there over 40 years and very very committed to get things working again. Alot of people have built there lives around Lewis's and speaking using terms such as "holds on in there" is trying to provoke fate IMO. There alot af families whose lives depend on Lewis's and its local independent concessions being sucessfull - e.g. M+K cards on the ground floor to name one. I recomend anyone in Liverpool just go in and take a walk around the whole store, not just the dated ground floor.
P.S. please dont see this as critisim on your magazine, 21C , the magazine is very good in general, its just that with so much critism of us, its really starting to get on my nerves. I mean how many other independent department stores do other cities have? and yet everyone moans about Lewis's.
Gareth February 6th, 2010, 02:54 AM ^^ It's more about the area that Lewis's is in, not Lewis's itself. Anyway, feel free to comment on the site.

I understand your point, however we are not backstabbing Lewiss at all and please believe me that is not our intention.
The article is highlighting how the whole area is in need of something more comprehensive in terms of getting things moving and giving the area the focus it deserves.
Lewiss is only referred to as being in need of a clean externally and there is a reference to the plans at the moment to include the building as part of Mereparks Central Village scheme.
The article is intended to kick the powers-that-be up the arse and look after this and other great buildings in the area that have more character and potential then anything new (in terms of retail) we have seen for many decades.
I personally pass through the store a lot, and have been dragged round by my mother as a child in Lewiss shopping and I am very fond of the store and keen to see it succeed as no doubt everyone in Liverpool does.
The store does "Hold on" but that is not a negative thing, this use of vocab highlights its unique ability to hold on amidst a shift of focus in the city centre and a crippling recession.
Mr.Someone February 6th, 2010, 03:20 AM Thank You for clearing that up :)
I was reading an article somewhere else (I think it was someones blog site)the other day and they clearly hadn't been around the whole store for years. I suppose I jumped to conclusions a bit quickly + I am very very very tired.
Anyhow, It will be interesting to see what the plans for Rapid are! I am looking forward to them as grovesnor have a good quality track record for improving areas.
I really like to see more involvment from the council in helping to regenerate the area. I get the vibe that they don't seem to care that much about the area around Central.
I think it needs a bit more greenery down Reneshaw Street (I think it could look less miserable with more trees)- In some respects it's ashame it lossed the garden bit at the Adelphi front during the big big dig.
P.S. Does anyone know what is happening with the ABC cinema?
T0M February 6th, 2010, 01:08 PM Great site guys, really top notch stuff. Good to see you've found a worthy creative outlet Michael! I look forward to seeing more interesting and provocative content in the coming months. This forum is an excellent way for us to exchange thoughts and ideas, but I often wonder how good it is at reaching the 'outside' world with our opinions and passion about the city - looks like Urban Edge is a positive step in that direction.
I'd also add to Mr.Someone that there is actually a great deal of affection for Lewises on this site, many of us having very fond memories of the 'glory days' when we were kids and all of us wanting to see it a) remain independant and family run but b) really fulfill it's potential as a vibrant shopping core at the heart of the city.
Tony Sebo February 6th, 2010, 01:59 PM That a great idea.
Urban Edge sounds better than UE though.
Actually, I agree, though this is the only 'issue' I could identify. UE sounds like what the old birds used to do when they saw their friend across the road and wanted to catch their attention.
Urban Edge.. does what it says on the lable etc!
Grat work men. All of us ramblers now have an outlet for some of our words to be considered for publication.

Guys, its branding! lol If people fail to notice the web address, email, and general written reference to "urban edge" then there is nothing down for them.
Although my nan did often shout "UEEEEEEE" when she was bombing down park road after someone she recognised dragging me and her shopping trolley.
Gareth February 6th, 2010, 02:27 PM Oh man, my nan used to do the same thing - on Park Road!
Doug Roberts February 7th, 2010, 07:00 PM Great work fellas, keep it up.
Babaloo February 8th, 2010, 01:29 PM Great start - looking forward to the next edition.
