View Full Version : Sim City 4 and Computer performance
SS454 May 18th, 2004, 11:16 PM I reciently upgraded my computer from an Athlon 1700+ @ 1496 mhz, and 256 MB of PC2100 to a Barton 2500+ @ 2304 mhz, 2x256 mb of PC3200 (176 FSB) on an nforce mobo, all with an ATI All-In-Wonder 7500 64 MB vid card OC'd to 198/280, and the difference is quite staggering.
Before it would take 1 min 45s - 1 min 50s to load my large map (which is mostly industrial, so lots of smog), and ran at 18 FPS. Now it takes about 37 seconds to load, and runs at 36 FPS, and the map is getting larger.
Any of you have simular experiences from upgrades?
AndrewC May 21st, 2004, 04:31 PM I have something like a Athalon 1700 or whatever but i can't even run big maps with a decent population (+50 000) I think my grpahics card must be poor?
Cabman May 22nd, 2004, 03:27 AM Recently purchased a new computer with an Amd64 3200 processor, 1024mb ram and 5950 ultra graphics card and it runs sc4 beautifuly.
MILIUX May 22nd, 2004, 05:27 AM You got to have at least 512mb and decent graphic card in order to run Simcity 4 without lag. I have Geforce FX 5600 256mb and it runs pretty well. I have 512mb but when I run large maps of over 200k, it starts to lag.

Same here. It only doesn't lag on the closest zoom. But the zooms I mostly play in 3 and 4 lags.
SS454 May 23rd, 2004, 07:53 AM wow Cabman, thats one heck of a system. Im sure thats extremely fast in games.
Æsahættr November 6th, 2004, 02:19 AM It actually ran on 640x480 (i think) on an old PIII 700mhz with some 64mb graphics card w/o that much lag.
I have a P4 overclocked to 3.36GHZ and an ATi Radeon 9800pro graphics card and it runs fast. (if it didnt there must be something wrong with the game itself :P)
Steve1984 November 27th, 2004, 02:25 PM I bought SC4 6 months ago but have only played it once. It just ran too slowly on my machine. Think its about time I sorted my computer out.
What should I do to my PC to make SC4 (and other games) run more smoothly, without crashing and without having to wait half an hour to get any kind of response!
My spec is:
Intel Pentium 4 (2192 mhz)
Physical memory 128mb
Virtual memory 2.00gb
How do I find out what type of graphics card I have? Assume I need to do more than just buy some more memory?
Not too quick with computers so if anyone can help (Private message if you prefer?) I'd much appreciate it.
:)
SS454 November 28th, 2004, 03:24 AM CPU isnt bad, could be better, but its sufficient.
Almost all games NEED a MINIMUM of 256 megs, with a recommended 512. So I highly recommend going up to a min of 512 megs of PC2700 or higher DDR ram. If your motherboard doesnt support it, upgrade that too.
If you go into your Display settings, it will often tell you what video card you have. Programs like SiSoft Sandra2004, 3dMark01, etc. Those will tell you. Im sure theres other and better ways.
Make sure your computer is free of viruses, trojans, and spyware. Run frequent scans with an upto date virus scanner, and ad-aware 6 for the spyware.
Dont run anything you dont need running. Having 50 things in your taskbar/toolbar running uses RAM, and you dont have any to spare. Run only the essentials.
Lower the settings in the game till it runs at a respectable speed. 800x600 resolution, low detail, low everything, nothing fancy.
Make sure you have enough cooling in your computer. If things get too hot, it can cause crashing. Its quite common to run a CPU above 55C, but not all comps can take it. And different motherboards have different ways of reading temps.
Steve1984 November 28th, 2004, 10:01 PM Thank you :hi:
TarheelsCubs December 3rd, 2004, 01:46 AM My PC has
3.2 GHz proc HT Tech
1024 MB Ram (PC3200)
128MB Video card
It runs the game great...however, when I put the game in cheetah mode and the city population is over 75,000 it goes VERY slow, it takes the years a long time to pass by. My PC is very powerful as u can see. Why does it drag like this? Do I need more RAM? Anyone else have this problem? Oh yeah, I run programs like adaware all the time. With hyperthreading though, it should not matter what else I have running.
Thanks
chuangk December 4th, 2004, 02:58 AM My computer specifications r:
Pentium 4 / 3.0 GHz HyperThreading Technology
Ram: (installed) 512 MB (2 x 256)
Video graphics: Integrated graphics
does anybody knows how powerful is the "Intergrated graphics" (in MB)
heavyzakura334 December 14th, 2004, 06:22 AM well, I have a Celeron.. that is good for some time but when I try to grow huge cities in the bif tiles i run out of digital memory... :bash:
