Battle of Rule Britannia and the Danes

as someone who would vote for a Republic (I wasn't 18 on the first referrendum), I have the following to ask:

- Why is Betty & Co. so bloody dull?
- Why aren't Betty & Co. as modern & progressive as Mags & Co.?
- Why don't we have a true Australian representation in our own Monarchy??! - because Betty & Co. are so bloody DULL!

On a side note: Go Mary! 'bout time one of us took it in their stride and married into a Euro-royal family (hell she's gonna be a frikking Queen!). Fredrik looks like he's going to be a hell of a lot more personable than Prince bloody Charles too.

I dunno - I've never really been interested in our own Monarchy (apart from Tudors and Stuarts - great period of history!), yet recent events have made make the following statement: let's divorce Betty & Co. and marry Mags & Co (LOL!), at least we know over the coming years we'd have OUR OWN head of state, and the subsequent Royal Bloodline will be part Australian for generations to come!

thoughts?

I also enjoyed the wedding of Prince Fredrik and Princess Mary in Denmark last week.Queen Margarethe of Denmark is a remarkable personality in the modern manner, which is why I like the Danish monarchy so well. However,I was also proud to see our Australian Governor General, hosting a dinner and I actually would have liked to see the GG have the title of head of state of Australia transferred from Elizabeth Windsor of UK.And that is the way I voted in the referendum in 1999.It was a close vote here in my electorate in Adelaide,51%no and 49% yes,but a yes vote was carried in 3 electorates close by.Like most Australians I accepted that Britains monarchy was part of the make up,but now I see it as not really belonging to us.The Commonwealth of Nations is made up of around 51 countries, and 32 of them are republics, and I believe that Australia needs to have its own identity as being fully independent. If the Yes vote had been carried at the referendum,Australia would be similar to the Federal Republic of Germany. Many of the European monarchies were imports from Germany, and many are related. As for the Danish monarchy, they have been regular visitors to Australia for quite a while, and the media were unaware of them being in the NT. :borg:

ACT was the only state / terr to get over 50% + 1 in '99. (63%)
Next closest was VIC with 49.94% (so close!)

side note: kota can you please put a space after punctuation marks? I don't think you realise how hard it is to read your posts with everything bunched up.

for anyone who's got Broadband (recommended) The Danish broadcaster "DR.DK" has the one-hour long "Mary Donaldson Documentary" online here (http://www.dr.dk/bryllupsplayer/index.asp?play=/nyheder/template/lib/wmm_bryllup.jhtml?mmID=83063&publicationID=1&list=/nyheder/template/lib/info.jhtml?multimediaID=83063). It was so the public get to know her or something...

it's about 80% in English.

LOL - compare her sister's Tasmanian "strine" accents to her new one!

prince philip "of greece" is a glucksborg, so it's an inconsistent family. and queen margarethe seems very nice, but she turned up to her son's wedding looking like gary oldman's dracula, and most importantly of all, australias more british than danish in attitude, so we'd only end printing reams of garbage about them and complain about them non stop. why ruin a perfectly good family.

unfortunately (for them), Britain and particularly the British media wouldn't let the English royalty modernise in the same way other European monarchies have. In the end you have a few factors:

- The English Royal family is expected by the people to maintain itself as the grandest monarchy in Europe: the sole surviving great monarchy. (which is somewhat paradoxical because they were the first monarchy to lose all their power...)
- You have to be Anglican to marry into the family, no easy converting if you were born a Catholic.
- Parliament and the people have continued to insist upon them marrying into nobility. Whilst Charles married a relative commoner (in Diana not being n-th in line to another throne), Diana was scarcely somone you'd meet in a pub in Sydney... If she was, then they could never have been married.
- The media are so intruding and publish such personal stuff that they literally have to live in quasi-secrecy
Big changes coming? sure. You'll see William marrying who he wants, and it having to be accepted because once you start getting direct heirs abdicating their rights to the throne, the viability and stability of the English monarchy is dubious. Imagine Edward VIII, say on the part of both William and Harry - it would be mortal blow to the monarchy.

Oh what the hell, I feel creative.... :)

There once was a Princess called Madeleine,
whom I'd certainly give a good straddlin',
And if she got haughty,
I'd tell her she's naughty,
bend her over, and give her a paddlin'.

I think last week some Maori was wed to a Windsor just the other week :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3941829.stm

She looks okay, but a few months back there was a fun program of possible British royalty Prince William could marry - 2 were okayish, another had billionaire and (so) secretive parents that the only pic they had was of her as a 5 year old (even though she was around 18), the other 2 I believe were seriously hot........but closely related and the problem of incest comes into the fold!

a) she's not the heir to the throne, and
b) the Swedes of the board probably take great pride in that at least one member of their royal family is phenomenally shag-tastic.

=P

re: Windsors, lol - who cares, they're boring Nick! :)

Matixvolta, I have a Swedish mate, who lives in Sweden, who drools over Princess Madeleine. He's a republican and wants to abolish the Royal Family, though, I think that's because he has more use for her if she was unemployed.... :)

I think you are a bit tough on Betty.
She was brought up in the 30´s in a toally different world from today. She was taught about her "duty to the country" upholding values( in a time where for instance marriage break-ups could lead to starvation),Keeping a perfect facade was considered vital to keep stability in society. Today it would be a joke to stay in a terrible marriage for "the sake of the country" but it wasnt then.
Millions of unemployed, living tough lives accepted royalty as part of a class-divided Britain, but royals not upholding the values of the time would give the sense that they didnt care about the country so why should they in their circumstances. Thats also why newspapers wouldnt report any scandals then, in fact they would probably help to quash ugly rumours if there were any, which also shows how much times have changed.
The enormity of standing on the balcony with Churchill in 1945 at the defeat of the nazi´s no doubt helped her to become very dedicated to the job, based on these old-fashoined values

If she changed too much she would loose all credibility, and I think the british think she is OK, but would expect future monarchs to be different in many ways.

Her biggest mistake was probably a very old-fashoined upbringing of her children, though I dont know much about it.
Still, I doubt any royal in history has lived through such social change

The Father in Law of Europe
30 kings and queens, princes and princesses tell their family history - stories of power, love, triumph, tragedy and honour in a Europe ruled by dynasty politics and where arranged marriages created alliances between countries. This six-part series was four years in the making and viewers are given unique insight into the royal family tree through frank interviews, personal photographs, diaries, letters, anecdotes and newly-released home movie footage - some of which has never been released to public view. 30 royal family members take part in this series including interviews with Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark and his mother Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark. At the end of the 1800s, the Danish King Christian IX managed to marry his six children into the dominating European royal families and Christian IX therefore became known as Europe's father-in-law. This episode charts his influence and the broad reach of his descendants across Europe today. (From Denmark, in English) (Part 1 or 6) PG
