At 12:55 pm on the 14th of February 2005, 1000 Kg of explosive material exploded on the Beirut Seafront killing over 20 people, injuring dozens, and causing tens of millions of dollars of damage. The target was the Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
8 hours after the devastating explosion took place, Leaders and members of the Bristol Opposition Gathering, along with the representative of the Maronite Patriarch, gathered in Beirut and issued a historical statement...
The Uprising of Independence was Born...
Ever since, the Lebanese people gather every year on Valentine's Day in Freedom Square to commemorate those who died defending Lebanon's Sovereignty and Independence...

This is a thread strictly dedicated for posting pics and videos from the memorial rally, please refrain from starting or provoking any sort of political debate or the thread will be closed by the moderators.

I really appreciate how organized the square was this year. The way they erected a platform around the statue and encircled the ruins to prevent people from going inside is a huge improvement over previous years.

Why don't Lebanese people try to be less passive..

I agree I am really disapointed, with this year's protest. There are less Lebanese flags, all I see is future, Lebanese forces, and Phalange party flags. This is a shame we are going backwords instead of forward! Yalla at least they are not waving Syrian flags!

Dont look at it like that. This was to commemorate Hariri, not the revolution. I think it's nice to see so many different party flags coming together in unity to pay tribute for one man.

Does anyone know the number of people who turned up to the rally.... I read somewhere that only 35,000 people came to the rally... from not so great source

well, it's only natural to think that after years of violence and demonstrations most lebanese are now fully focused on trying to make a living, invest, start new businesses find a job, buy a house etc...of course the turnout was way lower that previous years...that's not bad guys...it means that the country is moving forward and people are increasing productivity rather than wasting hours on the streets listening to empty speeches and killing each other. Hariri's speech was nice anyway. I guess the 2010 demo, was the last one with this format...hopefully, next year Rafic Hariri will be remembered in respectful silence, maybe in a uniting ceremony, maybe in our homes...like all martyrs who were killed with the aim of spreading hatred and destroying Lebanon. The best that could happen to Lebanon is that the size of demonstrations decreases more and more... RIP Hariri and ALL Martyrs

I think the turn out was very high if you notice the traffic jams coming into the city from all parts of the country. I think half the people probably didnt even make it all the way.

Alot of people slept in the square, to make sure they can attend the rally. I though the rally was good, but i thought if Harriri was here he would be disappointed that the remembering was a political concert, instead of a unifying event, for all Lebanese.

Hello, just putting my two cents:

I found the event in most of it really offensive in my opinion because it was not anymore about the sad memory of "Rafic Al Hariri's" death anymore. It became as you might say a popularity cotest, competing how much poeple they could bring to a rally.

It is really sad, I mean that most of the people who were down there where there to have fun and as you might say 'smell the roses'. You could see the Gigantic drums and the Narjile's sitting infornt of every chair, just made me dissappointed to see those people and politicians loose track of the esence of this day, which is paying tribute to a Great man.

It is very sad to see how things have become in this country that I love very much, remember, Im not taking sides here because believe me non parties are worth taking sides with.

Just wait untill the numbers are announced, believe me that there will be a media frenzy about the numbers of the crowds rather than a tribute to a great man who gave his life to the country he loves also.

to be honest... one of the only positive things i find about the whole "march 14" and "march 8" division is that its probably the first time where its not muslim vs. christian.... but rather political ideologies that r responsible for the divide. And although it still sucks... seeing a pic of hariri next to the patriarch's.. shows another side of lebanon :)
