Review: We could not believe how gorgeous this hotel was. Easily the nicest place in the country outside of Addis.

The design is a minimalist one which combines traditional stone housing with Italian elegance. In the main building, there is a small lounge area with dvds and a library with a collection of very interesting books on Ethiopia. The bedrooms are in different buildings scattered on the property.

We had a delicious Sunday lunch of pasta and cutlets and a big salad in a gorgeous room filled with Italian expats and their kids. The manager told us they were booked solid for two weeks. Wxpats working in development come here and so do Europeans using the Gheralta Lodge as a base for excursions to all the pretty churches in the area. We stopped here en route from Aksum to Mekele and we were very glad we did.

Review: Much enjoyed a weekend at Sabana Beach Resort. It was previously hard to get bookings, but this time we did it early enough. It was so great to be able to swim out to the middle of Lake Langano - the beach is excellent. The restaurant is clean and atmospheric and the food good. The rooms are the highlight, really clean and comfortable, with plenty of stoep space (for sitting outside) and it was easy to move around. It is run by the same managers as Top View and Blue Tops restaurants, so it is not the budget option, but I think also great value for money. An Ethiopian friend was honeymooning there, and said it was fantastic during the weekdays, with almost no visitors and reduced prices. There is a big screen tv projection in the conference hall, for soccer fans, etc. but it was a bit dim. Nice landscaping of the grounds, with lots of trees preserved or planted and excellent bird life. Also good thought to recreation by the beach, including canoes, darts in the bar, etc. A cut above most other Langano resorts.

After 1 hour drive from Awassa you reach this Lodge. It is an interesting drive through some villages and just after you think that this must be the end of the civilised world you come to a beautiful lodge in the middle of a forest.

Through the forest we saw 11 bungalows, all nicely furnished, clean and fresh. What a find!

In the evening we sat at the open fire and the staff called the hyenas, a very special threat. In the morning we had our breakfast wile monkeys where playing in the trees next to us. Some of us had a ‘bush walk’ and were invited to have lunch with near by people living in the traditional way.

At the lodge all meals are very good: it’s like being in Italy.

All in all I found this lodge to be a real gem.

The tour company listed our two days in Turmi as "camping." We didn't know that we had any other choice. After 1 day in a bungalow at Kaske Campground (no towel, leaking toilet, ineffective mosquito net, no sink, no hot water), we found the Buska Lodge and fortunately, they had a vacancy. At the Buska Lodge the food is delicious, the linens are fine, the hot water is plentiful, and the rooms completely comfortable. Also, the staff is cordial and helpful. They even line up at the entrance to say goodbye to departing guests. This place is a cut above and comparable to a fine eco-lodge in any other country.

Stayed for 3 days in July, returned a week later and stayed over 3 more weeks. Rooms were clean, well-appointed. Breakfast included, even if ordered to room service (with small service charge). Safes, balconies, desks, internet (slow as in all of Addis, but reliable) wired in room, wireless in lobby/restaurants, gym, swimming pool.

The Food and Beverage staff, from management to waitresses, and certainly including the kitchen crew and Executive Chef, bent over backwards to ensure our stay was as good as it could be! The food was great and the service even better. Watch out for those pastries, as they are too good to pass up!

The service in this hotel is fabulous and consistently the best I've seen in years. While this is not part of the international chain, it's a great hotel and is where I'll likely stay in the future!

That's actually the awesome thing about Ethio. All these developments are done 100% by Ethiopians (except 2 I think, where they have foreign partners). There's no foreign-owned establishment AFAIK, which is a good thing.
I don't want Ethio to become like Zambia, where 100% of the business in the country is owned by Indians, Lebanese, South Africans, Chinese, etc. The only Zambians who own anything are white or Indian Zambians :ohno:

Lewi’s Five Star Resort Hotel to be Inaugurated

Lewi’s General Plc is inaugurating a five star resort and hotel on the shores of Hawassa Lake on April 3, 2010. The construction of this tourist facility, which is the fourth for the company, started in 2007 and cost more than 100 million Br in total, according to Donald Pool, the manager.
Part of the money was obtained as a loan from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE). The facility stands on a 10,000sqm plot.

It has 86 bedrooms, steam baths, private safe boxes, and electronics facilities. In addition to this, separately built luxury bungalows are constructed with traditional designs.

There are also villa sized Luxury Bungalows, two swimming pools which can accommodate 350 to 400 swimmers at a time, and four conference halls with 50 to 1,400 seats, as well as shops, a playground for children and a garden that can serve for weddings and other functions.

Boston Partners Gets Gorgeous Deal for Abay Gorge Lodge


Boston Partners Plc has been given 160,000sqm of land, free of lease, in the Abay Gorge (Blue Nile Gorge) for the construction of a lodge.

This company, owner of Boston Day Spa in Addis Abeba, has been involved with similar investments for seven years. It already has resorts in Bishoftu (Debre Zeit) and Bahir Dar towns. Additional resorts are under construction in Bishoftu and Burayu. The company was established by Tadiwos Getachew and Taiwanese-born American Tera Chung.

“There has not been such an investment in the area before,” said Aynalem Belete, head of the Investment Process Division at the Amhara Investment Bureau. “We wanted to encourage the investor, so that the local communities would be able to benefit.”

The site is located 220km from Addis Abeba in the vicinity of Renaissance Bridge between Goha Tsion, in Oromia, and Dejen, in Amhara. The lowest point of the gorge is found between these two towns, requiring drivers to go through a steep descent on one side and a steep climb on the other. Temperatures can climb as high as 40 degrees centigrade.

Boston Partners plans to spend 30 million Br on the project and introduce such sports as mountain climbing, mountain biking, and freshwater fishing. There are two underlying reasons why the lodge was intended to be constructed there, according to Tadiwos, general manager of Boston Partners.

“First we wanted to create the opportunity for people to see the Abay at a close range and to relax, and second because there is no recreation site along the way in the long drive from Addis Abeba to Bahir Dar,” he said.

Boston Partners plans to undertake similar developments in Lalibela, Hawassa, Bale, and Lalibela.

“We have a vision to expand the chain of our lodges, built according to Ethiopian design, to other parts of Africa,” Tadiwos said.

So far, the company fully owns only the Kuriftu Lodge in Bishoftu. With the others, it has partners.

In Bahir Dar, a 37pc share is owned by Tilahun Belete, a local investor. At their new Hora Lodge as well as in Bishoftu, 50pc is owned by two individuals, Yosef Asrat and Nardos Addis. The Burayu Lodge, under construction, just outside of Addis Abeba and on the road to Ambo, is also 50pc owned by Semunegus Shewatsega.

The design for the Abay Gorge Lodge is yet to be done. The company will use its own resources to undertake the construction.

It's odd, some of these buildings have terrible architecture on the outside but have quite nice interiors.

Three star and four star... I'm very happy that these guys are being honest. In most African countries these would all be passed off as five-star, and as three- and four- star they, as far as I can tell, meet the international standards for such ratings.

The interiors in most of these hotels are really really nice, I am surprised to be honest.

I am also glad that there are so many local hotels, but I hope the international ones will help boost the architectural standard.

Locals are already proactive in the industry, and they've made HUGE improvements in the last 3-4 years, but they need to step up their game on a few fronts (architecture, customer service and quality of chefs, etc). This type of situation is when liberalization for foreign investors makes sense and is beneficial.

I remember staying here too. We somehow managed to sneak into some reception being held by the local branch of the NIB Bank. My grandfather happened to know some people there.

Wow, nice lodges and hotels you got there! What about the prices? I'm going home for good next summer and I really wanna go to Ethiopia whenever I reach Djibouti, but this time I wanna go north (Amhara and Tigray).

It is the bar of Liquid Lounge that is, perhaps, the most eye-catching. On the bar’s side, behind a glass pane, tiny streams of water trickle down to suggest not so much a waterfall as a water leak. Still, it leaves customers with a general feeling of being surrounded by fluids: as it is a bar, there is an abundance of liquid other than water.

Located in the building next to Lime Tree in Kazanchis, Liquid Lounge opened its doors on December 17, 2010. It was opened by a group of friends comprising both local and foreign people, with separate day jobs outside the lounge, with the exception of Jara Goshu, the manager.

The management of Sheraton Addis has told the hotel’s supervisors and operation managers that the hotel will suspend its operation on Valentine’s Day after 13 years of service.

The hotel’s general manager, Jean-Pierre V. Manigoff, announced at an operation meeting he chaired on Thursday that the hotel will cease its service on February 15 unless the labor union halts its squabble with the management, according to credible sources.


The operation managers and supervisors notified the whole employees of the hotel the next morning that the hotel will end its operation on the specified date. The Reporter has confirmed that the hotel will not accept reservations staring from February 15. Around 53 operation managers participated in the meeting, which was held at Lalibela Ballroom.

. Meanwhile, the labor union of the hotel held a meeting simultaneously with the Hotels, Tourism and Service Industry Federation to resolve its issues with the management. Though the management had called the labor union yesterday to discuss the matter, it later said that the issue could not be a subject for discussion. The union told the management that hotel can end its operation only if it is bankrupt.

It asked Manigoff why the management had threatened to close the hotel to force the union to drop its demands, according to the sources. They added that Manigoff, however, denied that the management had not threatened to close the hotel and claimed to have said that he floated the idea after consulting with the owner, Sheik Mohammed Al Almoudi, in connection with the execution of the expansion project the hotel was planning to execute, according to the same sources. Manigoff declined to comment on the issue.

The first African hotel to join The Luxury Collection, the Sheraton Addis was built by Al-Amoudi. Designed by noted architect Kosek Ivo, since opening in February 1998, the Sheraton Addis has hosted countless high-profile events, including Pan-African and African Union summits, as well as New Year's Eve celebrations with special performances by world-renown artists such as Beyonce, Ludacris, The Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna and Akon, among other guests.

I used to think that unions were good in the nascent stage of an industry, and only became corrupt later, now I am beginning to rethink that. To see such whining in Ethiopia is both heartbreaking and challenges such thought. I hope they resolve it, but it should be a warning to other businesspeople to avoid unionization. It would be terrible if the country's foremost hotel was to close.

I have a cousin that works there part-time and around 5000 birr/month is what a full time waitress earns counting the tip (their salary is below 1000). Maybe other employees are comparing themselves with them..

Bahir Dar is up north in the Amhara region. Debre Zeit is in central Ethiopia, in the Oromia region.

This project is in Langano. It lies next to the lakes of Abijata, Shalla, and to the north of it is lake Ziway. These lakes are south of Debre Zeit, hence in the Oromia region.

"Tourist City" is part of a project devised by investors from the United Arab Emirates some 3 or 4 years ago. The Abiyata-Shalla area is where they planned to invest about $1.5-$2 billion dollars. This, by extension, also includes lake Langano. The project at the time was called, "Tourist City." Thus, I am guessing this is the first part of the project.

The Privatization and Public Enterprises Supervising Authority (PPESA) has terminated the 512 million dollar deal with Aklile Berhan Mekonnen (Prince), who had entered a contract to take over the Ghion Hotel Enterprise.
Wondafrash Assefa, Public Relation head of PPESA, told Capital that the deal was terminated when the investor failed to settle his initial investment. The agency says they waited patiently for the investor for the last several months. “The investor did not clarify why he delayed the payment. Because of this the agency has made a decision to terminate the deal,” Wondafrash said.
The deal between the two parties was concluded in late August 2010 and the investor was supposed to come up with 210 million dollars, as his first registered initial capital, by the end of September 2010. PPESA wrote a letter in November to the investor, demanding payment or threatening to terminate the deal. The investor waited for more than three months before asking for more time even after receiving the warning letter. According to the public relation head, the agency has decided to put the hotel up for another auction. But he said that the exact time has not yet been determined.
According to the deal, Aklile, an Ethiopian born investor based in Italy, had to come up with 210 million dollars as his first registered initial capital. The total investment sum would be 310 million dollars, which includes 100 million dollars for the government-shared hotel. The deal added that if the investor spends an additional 300 million dollars in the next five years, he will own 80 percent of the Ghion Hotel. The rest will be state-owned.
According to the investor’s proposal, accepted by the board of PPESA, the current swimming pool was to be closed down for the public and make way for a new four star hotel, counting five floors, which will be accompanied by another five star hotel. The latter would be built at the location of the current Ghion building. During the construction, the hotel would not be closed down, the deal states. Aklile, who says he is one of the last sons of Prince Makonnen Hailesellasie, who was one of the favorite sons of Emperor Hailesellasie, had promised that the two hotel buildings will be completed within five years.
The unsuccessful deal for Ghion, one of the biggest state owned hotels and located in the prime corner of Addis Ababa, bordering the National Palace, is not new for the business.
Ghion has grabbed the attention of many high profile businesspeople and companies in the past couple of years, after the government invited interested parties to be part of a joint venture in the hotel. PPESA had made various deals with different foreign and local investors but they all failed.
The Ghion Hotels Enterprise was established in 1951 and used to operate a chain of eleven hotels, which were all found in northern Ethiopia, except the National Hotel in Addis Ababa, sold to the Ethiopian Athletics Federation a year ago. Roha Hotel, one of the hotels administered by Ghion Hotel, was transferred to Ayat Real Estate a year ago.
