Looking at Cape Town is a sheer delight to the eye, it looks so urban, clean, well-developped and modern. This city could be anywhere in the world. The mayors are doing a good job. Africans should really invite Capetonians over and help them bring their cityscapes/planning/management back on track. Truly a role model for SSA

In South Africa there is a huge growing middle-class of black-South Africans. Recently, the number of black-S.Africans classified as middle-class has outgrown that of white-South Africans. However, in Cape Town, black-S.Africans are in the minority... to really see the progress of this up-and-coming population group in its majority, you need to see Johannesburg... it is inspiring to see that much prosperity only 16 years after democracy, but we still have a long way to go, but we're making good headway.

Culturally, the Western Cape province is very different to the rest of South Africa. 'Coloureds' are the majority, around 50% if I'm not mistaken. This is followed by blacks, who account for 30% of the population, and around 16% is white from what I understand. The rest is mainly Asian.

Can some please post pictures of the Northern Sub in here.
We all know its not realy for the tourest, but I still think it look pretty cool now a days and they realy made an effort.

Pics of Tygervally, Edward Street, Durbanville, so suburbs here also, cause there is alot of houses here on this side with no fences. Would be cool to the rest know that we dont live in prisons.

^^ I posted one view from Welgemoed, but getting pics of the northern suburbs are hard to find and I actually do not live in Cape Town, I live 1hour outside in the Winelands.

The suburb in the above photo (Century City) from another angle. You'll notice the theme park in the top left of the photo. The left-half of the photo is dominated by Canal Walk Mall, with residential towers and office blocks surrounding it:

Ratanga looks very minuscule from that angle.Cape Town (and in extension,SA) really need a grand amusement park that can hold its own against the world's.

It really does hey. I'm actually amazed at how big it feels when inside of it. It's hard to get one's head around how it can look so tiny from the outside but feel so big from within :lol:

I don't think a lack of space is the issue though...there's quite a lot they can still make use of. They simply need to build some more rides. Although, something huge and internationally-recognizable would be awesome, but I doubt both that and Ratanga would survive in unison.

What would be legend is an extension of the theme park to the other side of the road on the left of the photo, and a tunnel linking the two sides. Alas I doubt Century City will be extended that way any time soon, if ever. Stupid Airforce Base.

Not quite photos, but what's in store for Cape Town in the future. "It's by far the biggest urban regeneration project in South Africa and even Africa." R20bn is a conservative figure :)

^^ Unfortunately (or fortunately perhaps), large Disney-sized theme parks don't really work in South Africa, as they're not South Africa's tourism draw. It's our beauty, diversity and culture that attracts tourists, not man-made things they can get in Florida, USA. :)

^^Actually wasn't thinking about the tourists but rather us,the citizens of SA,surely we deserve better.There are always chunks of Asian tourists at Gold Reef City.Anyways my reasoning is flawed as most foot traffic into these theme parks is foreign.

Yeah, I'm not sure if there's sufficient demand for yet another theme park. Ratanga Junction was struggling, but thankfully they've managed to turn that around. If we were to get another theme park, it would have to be something huge that would attract tourists, and in that case Ratanga would probably bite the dust due to being unable to compete.

I was impressed with the development, beauty and modernity the Cape Town:)

Cape Town is truly a delight to the eye. I enjoy ALL the photos.

When it comes to proper urban management, cleaniness and a high level of sophistication, Cape Town needn´t hide itself at all and can perfectly rival any city of its size in highly developped First World Western Europe.

A nice overview of the suburb of Century City, which consists of Cape Town's largest mall (144 500m2), offices, apartments, houses, villas, Ratanga Junction theme park, a driving range, wetlands and many other entertainment opportunities such as cycling and jogging tracks:

Remember, townships are no longer just shanty-towns, they're areas experiencing development, urban renewal and large-scale housing formalisation. For example, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha already have large-scale shopping centres. It's far from "upmarket areas", but it's not all shanty "favelas" either. Informal settlements still sprawl in some areas, particularly in a linear fashion along the N2 freeway, but lots has been done since 1994 to build formal housing.

There's loads more room left up the West Coast. And developers still have the option of going vertical should the need arise. Places like Strand and Blouberg are going vertical as we speak :)

Same thing all over the world. Sure many Aussies want to live right next to the ocean, are middle-class, but just can't afford seaside suburbs. Very many of Cape Town's middle-upper class suburbs do not have sea views. Because as you said, there simply isn't enough space. Actually, only the richest can afford seaside homes in Cape Town these days. Most middle-class Capetonians cannot afford the luxury of a sea view anymore.

But, that is a global trend, in LA, San Fran, Sydney... all these cities, you need a lot of cash to afford a home on the beach. :)

Completely different climate though. We're like central California's Mediterranean Climate. Durban on our east coast is more like Rio, Sub-tropical, like Miami for example.

"I'm a huge soccer fan, but couldn't be here during the World Cup, so it's really great to be here now..." Renaud Visage from Paris tells me while Tina Chen, his partner, investigates a brightly coloured, soccer-themed mural close by.

Like me, they're making their way along a section of what used to be the official Fifa Fan Walk - . and it seems this dedicated pedestrian route is quickly becoming a popular way to explore Cape Town, further testament to the success of the tournament.

Meandering all the way along Darling, Strand, Adderley, Riebeek and Waterkant streets, connecting with Somerset Road and finally ending at the new Cape Town Stadium, the route provides a thoroughly diverse cross section of South Africa's oldest city.

However, if the entire 2.6km which makes up this interesting walk, sounds a bit stiff for one day, why not break it up into digestible sections?

Taking a leisurely stroll from the Castle of Good Hope on Darling Street to the flower sellers in Adderley might be a perfect way to brush up on long-forgotten history lessons, while the section from Riebeek street to the stadium provides a taste of Cape Town's delectably cosmopolitan vibe.

Various refreshment stalls, coffee shops and cafés also populate this latter section of the walk ensuring that weary feet and dry throats have the necessary pit stop if required.

Serving a variety of sandwiches, pies and beverages The Fresh Basket is one of the most affordable and also most efficient. They have a 3-minute-wait guarantee and are situated close to the start of Riebeek Street's pedestrian section.

The Prestwich Memorial in Green Point is another big attraction. Commemorating slavery and colonialism, the site is an important reminder of Cape Town's controversial past.

The quaint red-brick building has lately become famous for housing TRUTH Coffee Cult, the favourite haunt of many-a Capetonian coffee connoisseur. What better break from the site's heavy historical connotations than a frothy cappuccino?

Furthermore the nearby memorial square boasts a number of landscape artworks that beg closer inspection: a tree made out of recyclable goods stands tall while a rainbow bearing the words "It's beautiful here" frames a perfectly hazy Table Mountain.

What's also apparent along the walk are the yellow-clad security staff and watchful police on horseback, both adding a wholesome feeling of ‘safety first' to the route.

Spanish tourists Ferran and Laia Estebaranz tell me that they have been doing the route every day since arriving in Cape Town a week ago. "There is so much to see and enjoy! It really is lovely." With various information boards popping up along the way they have also made use of the opportunity to brush up on Cape history and trivia.

I can safely say this route is a must for any urban wanderer who wants to take in some of the most interesting, beautiful and enjoyable bits of Cape Town's city life.

Why would they destroy the cooling towers? Just paint them like the ones at Soccer City.

Because their compression rings were collapsing and beyond repair. Strong winds could have blown them over, so the city had to demolish them.

UCT tops SA varsities with world rank at 107

UCT is the only South African university ranked among the world’s top 200 by the Times ranking, which published its 2010 rankings yesterday.

THE University of Cape Town (UCT) said yesterday it was pleased to be ranked 107th on the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, but was mindful of the flaws in all ranking systems.



UCT is the only South African university ranked among the world’s top 200 by the Times ranking, which published its 2010 rankings yesterday, amid controversy in academic circles over rankings systems.

Some argue that ranking systems foster homogeneity and that most of these systems try to capture characteristics that cannot be measured directly.



UCT said it was aware that different institutions have their own strengths and bring their own particular value to their students.



The Times ranking’s 2010 list, which places the US’s Harvard University in first place, used “dramatically improved methodology” to give a more realistic picture of institutions’ true global positions, compared to the past, said the Times rankings deputy editor Phil Baty, who is responsible for the rankings list.



UCT spokeswoman Gerda Kruger said last year, when the rankings body used different methodology, the University was ranked 146th.

The new teaming of the Times rankings with Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science used 13 individual performance indicators and claims to cover the following three core missions of a university: research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

However, the highest weighted category remains a university’s “research influence”.



Mr Baty said: “It is clear that SA has a place among the world’s elite. The University of Cape Town is SA’s flagship.

“It is the only South African institution in the top 200, but it does very well in 107th place.

“Other South African institutions are bubbling under the top 200, so there is potential and there are, of course, lots of good things being done in South African higher education that would not be reflected in a global ranking system that looks, primarily, at a research elite -— things such as improving social mobility in a highly unequal society.”



The new list came out on the day Democratic Alliance higher education spokeswoman Juanita Kloppers-Lourens accused Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande of “not caring” about ensuring South African universities met international standards.



She was responding to Dr Nzimande’s reply to a parliamentary question. He said league tables such as the Times rankings were “limited in (their) biased use of a range of indicators”.

Dr Nzimande said the government was committed to using internal mechanisms such as the Council for Higher Education’s quality committee to ensure “a robust quality system”.



UCT’s success showed South African universities could achieve global distinction.



About 55 universities that were ranked ahead of UCT in the 2009 index came from countries where English is not the first language. “It is not ‘w esternised’ universities that thrive, but rather universities that hold themselves to international standards, ” Ms Kloppers-Lourens said.



Ranking systems have recently come under fire internationally and UCT said it was conducting an in-depth analysis of the Quacquarelli Symonds report to assess its research and methodology.

Cape Town has always had natural beauty, but right now it is just blossoming and transforming into a world class tourist destination as well. The parks, stadiums, road rail upgrades and public transport, the new and redone city squares, the booming restaurant and social scene - really, it is an absolute must visit.

It is a wonderful city. :cheers:

The city itself doesn't get snow. The mountains surrounding it do, as well as some towns on the other side of said mountains.

Totally disagree! Their whole point is not painting the wall. They're going for the rustic/historic vibe and I love it :) It has far more character and story behind it than a bland brown wall.
