The Bolshoi Ice Palace is part of the complex of facilities operated by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The complex includes the Bolshoi Ice Palace, Maly Ice Palace and a training rink. All Ice Hockey venues will be located in close proximity to one other, providing maximum comfort for athletes and guests of the Games.

The Bolshoi Ice Palace complex will have a capacity of 12,000 seats and will be covered by a dome. The design of the Bolshoi Ice Palace is based on the image of a frozen drop and will be principally silver once complete.

After the Games, the Bolshoi Ice Palace will serve as an ultra-modern, world-class multi-purpose sports and entertainment center.

Looks cool ... what will the arena be used for after the Olympics? Are there any Kontinental hockey league teams in Sochi at the moment? This would make a good home for them I reckon ... even though it might be too small in terms of capacity.

Spartak - the most popular club in Russia, the fans would not allow him to move out of Moscow. Rather Kryliya Sovetov or Vityaz would move in Sochi.

Look at the bid book, candidate files and etc, they plan to keep 2 arenas as indoor sporting venues, whilst say the curling arena is turned into a Exhibition Centre and the speed skating oval is turned into an indoor market.

The venues meet IOC requirements and will be downsized or altered post Paralympics to what seems necessary for the city.

First glimpse inside Bolshoi arena, hockey's home in 2014

Sochi 2014 will be the first time that Russia will host the Olympic Winter Games, and preparations are well underway to get this Black Sea port ready to welcome the world.

Members of the IIHF Facility Committee, led by chairman and IIHF Vice-President Kalervo Kummola, recently attended a meeting in Sochi that included a tour of the Olympic sites. Of particular interest was the Bolshoi Ice Dome, the main hockey venue for the Games.

“It was amazing,” said IIHF Facility Committee secretary and IIHF Event Development Director Cornelia Ljungberg, “It was half-done, there’s still work to do on the inside, but on the outside it looks quite ready and the plaza in front was impressive.”

The 12,000-seat arena is scheduled to be completed in September, The design of the Bolshoi Ice Dome is based on the image of a frozen drop, and will be principally silver once complete. Following the Games, it will serve as a multi-purpose sports and entertainment centre.

For the first time, the IIHF can publish photos of the arena’s interior where the rink and tribunes can be clearly identified (see above).

The first test events that have been announced for the arena will be the Eurohockey tour (December, 2012) and the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship (April, 2013).

“This was a very encouraging visit as we are very confident that not only will everything be ready for the Olympics, but the main hockey venue will be ready for hockey one year ahead of the Olympic tournament,” said Kalervo Kummola.

Sochi’s population has more than doubled since the Games were awarded to the Russian Federation. In addition to the local population of 40,000, 55,000 workers have been employed on what’s been labelled the world’s biggest construction site. Russia has had to build all the stadiums and infrastructure from scratch in a seven-year, $30 billion project, making Sochi 2014 the most expensive Winter Games in history.

“It’s incredible how many people were working on the sites, even on Saturday and Sunday and also during nighttime," said Ljungberg.

The entire Olympic infrastructure is the most compact in the history of the event, with a mountain cluster for skiing and sliding events and a coastal cluster just 40 kilometres apart. The Bolshoi arena will be located in the coastal cluster, among other features such as the Olympic Park.

The Park will connect up all competition venues for ice hockey, skating, and curling, and also includes the Central Stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremony and will also serve as a football arena for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. An upcoming F1 track that will run through the entire site is also in the works.

Yeah, after all, Sochi is hosting the Paralympics right after the Olympics, an event dedicated to disabled people.

It's almost a given that there will be a KHL franchise in Sochi. Though it's more likely that it will be a new team. Vityaz should be scraped altogether and their owners should be banned from hockey.

Are they rumored to relocate?

I don't know.. but one can always hope. Teams like Vityaz (dirty, talentless, fanless) should be either shut down or relocated to better markets.

Bolshoi Ice Palace will obviously stay, as well as figure ice skating arena (12000 seats). Small ice palace (7500) will be moved to Vladikavkaz, and curling arena(3000) will be moved to Tver. That's pretty much it.

Yeah. You can notice that they're mounting a LED ring. I wonder if it's gonna be 1 or 2 rings. Everything should be completed in a month and a half.

Looks amazing, both exterior and interior... and this high ceeling reminds of NHL arenas.

Other than lower capacity (only for 3 000 seats than the smallest arena in NHL), this arena is on par if not better than the most of NHL rinks. But Sochi is not a big city and they never had a hockey team before, so 12000 is enough for them.

NHL teams often changed locations. Mostly they moved into south US regions, like Florida, for instance. KHL team in Sochi will have perfect opportunities to gather good audience.
