So instead of building an off ramp an on ramp they built a bottleneck. Whats the point of flyovers if they cant do traffic disbursement properly.:bash:

^^ you could be right.
They're still talking about MUTP-II upgrades. This is still good news imo : They're trying to procure non-Siemens rakes on the lines of Delhi Metro (bombardier). Should look swanky. I hope they're on track to rid of the the old and clunky RCF rakes which Coolguyz indicated in the CR and Harbor line at the same time.

One person is homeless after fire ripped through a bachelor apartment downtown.

It happened around 6:18 p.m. Tuesday at 442 Nelson St. — a small two-storey building divided into units.

One caller to 911 said smoke was coming from a window on the first floor.

Firefighters arrived to find flames but managed to get it under control within a half-hour and searched all floors, including the basement.

Damage is estimated around $80,000, but the cause remains unknown. There were no injuries.

The occupant of the unit where the fire started is being assisted by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Nelson Street fire leaves one person homeless

BY KRISTY NEASE NOVEMBER 8, 2011

One man has been displaced from his home on Nelson Street in Sandy Hill after a fire broke out in his unit early Tuesday night.

The call at 442 Nelson St. — a two-storey, multi-unit building — came in at 6:19 p.m. after a fire broke out in a one-room apartment unit on the first floor.

Twenty-six firefighters in seven rigs were dispatched to the building near the Somerset Street East intersection. The fire was knocked down in about five minutes and the situation was under control by about 6:40 p.m., a fire department spokeswoman said.

No one was hurt. The displaced man was receiving assistance from the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.

Firefighters estimated the cost of the damage at about $80,000. An investigator was brought in to try to determine the cause of the blaze, and that investigation was ongoing Tuesday night.

King Longs incur 75cr losses yearly

The air-conditioned King Longs buses place a large financial burden on the transport undertaking and cause losses to the tune of Rs 75 crore annually, a BEST panel member said during the budget discussion on Thursday. This was revealed during the budget discussions by Shiv Sena member Sunil Ganacharya at the BEST panel meeting on Thursday.

"AC buses led to a loss of income of Rs 9,279 daily. It is a huge loss and we need to improve the performance of the transport undertaking," Sena member Sunil Ganacharya said. "In the case of non-AC buses (which were more than 3,500), the average losses were close to Rs 2,700 per bus daily," he added.

Pointing to the revised budget estimates, he said that the BEST administration had shown an estimated income of Rs 197 crores through development and commercial use of bus stations/depots in 2011-12. "But is the money really coming in ?" he questioned. He pointed out that in the recent redevelopment of Kurla and Mahim depots, there was a delay by the contractor and no penalty/interest was recovered. Also, most of the redevelopment work at bus depots were not completed on time.

Another Sena member Suhas Samant said that the BEST, which was a loss-making body, had earmarked Rs 44 crores for purchase of new buses in the coming year, but there was no clarity on what kind of buses were being inducted in the fleet. He suggested that the transport body should henceforth purchase buses free of cost, with the manufacturer earning revenue through advertising rights on the buses. "The money earned through advertisements and hoardings should also be used for maintenance of these buses,'' he said.

Another member Mohan Lokegaonkar suggested that the BEST should earn revenue by displaying advertisments on the rear side of bus seats. "Just like the First Class compartment in trains, you can also have two special seats in the bus whose tickets can be priced at premium rates,'' he told the committee, with members of his own party finding this idea very embarassing at a time when Sena was opposed to hike in bus fares.

"Multi-tier parking of buses should be permitted at depots. Revenue can be earned by leasing out land for commercial purposes," "The Sena will never allow a bus fare hike which will put burden on the common man," Sena member Suhas Samant added.

^^ This pic brilliantly describes the utter frustration that is driving in Mumbai. It is not the traffic jams that frustrates more, but scenes such as in the pic that does. And I need not say it is not specific to the location mentioned above, but something we notice and experience multiple times in a day. And what is sad is that this is the only type of driving that we know.

The thing is its a mess and how do we get out of it. I am sure there are lanes available at many places in Bombay, but the people aren't using it. So if they are providing infrastructure, then people at least need to know how to use it. Its sad that the lanes, which are simple to be in, people in India find it hard to use it.

Just one solution :

Tough implementation of traffic rules and proper planning by the TP. Looks like the roads are broad enough to take the load.

From today's DNA:

If all goes as per plans, you will be able to ferry to work by 2013. For, the state government has finally decided to pump in Rs750 crore for the passenger water transport project on both the eastern and the western fronts. In fact, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is already preparing tenders which it wants to float in early January.

“We’ve been given an assurance of the Rs 750-crore state funding for building infrastructure for the water transport project. If the funds come in on time, we can float tenders for the construction by January-February 2012,” said Bipin Shrimali, vice-chairman, MSRDC. Stating that infrastructure like jetties, ticketing system and passenger terminals could be set up in 18 months, he added, “We will outsource the running of boats tendering for which will be done simultaneously.”

The financial structuring of the project will be decided once the tenders are ready. “While MSRDC will not put any money into the project, it depends on the government if it wants a pie of their investment from the consortium running the transport system,” said Shrimali. A senior MSRDC official said the infrastructure will include the construction of an 800-metre elevated road at Ferry Wharf to be mainly used for the “roll-on, roll-off” services, allowing motorists to ferry along their vehicles.

“We’re also looking at catamarans, hovercrafts and normal boats, for which companies, mainly from Britain, Korea and Hong Kong, have evinced interest. Already in possession of a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Port Trust from 2009, we only need an environmental clearance before commencing the project,” said SR Nandargikar, the project in-charge.

you need traffic wardens at every junction.

Problem is not the mumbai residents. Its the truck drivers from all over India who just cant maintain the lane discipline or even respect the signals. Even on the eastern expressway they drive at 10-15mph cause their truck is so old if they go more than 20 it will probably break down. Choking off traffic behind them.

Its the same for private buses, they select drivers from the villages to drive in the city without a proper training. They have not seen signals before.

In the long run you need a proper process nationwide which means getting a drivers license is not like buying popcorn.

there are other issues as well

ladies driving SUV in my experience are horrendous drivers. They totally miss their judgement.

I think you need a special license to drive an SUV especially on the very narrow roads of mumbai. Stick to a small car which is easy to drive and more importantly park. How many times have i seen ladies operating SUV's like Scorpios leading to knocked off side mirrors while parking or moving out of a narrow parking spot.

Also as a follow up to my other posts. I think in 1-2 years even the villagers become very good drivers with practise. Problem is they start demanding more pay and the owner replaces them with somebody cheap who does not know how to drive from the village.

Thats how mumbai keeps adding people. When people who are trained enough in their skill demand better wages they are replaced by somebody cheaper from the village the owner is from.

That is exactly why i never travel the kasara ghats to shirdi at night. Even stopped travelling by the private buses recently. Drive there during the day with my family in our own car during the peak of day and outside the rainy season and keep speed to 50kph even though i can easily be doing 100. Though the new road has made driving a breeze that much must be said. Takes me 5 hours from mulund.

The logic is that most Indians can get licenses without giving any test. Most Indians do not even know ALL the rules of traffic. Compare it to the Western nations where people fail more times in driving tests than they pass it.

If after all this someone says that Indians have the best reflexes or stuff like that, its crap. Thing is, they DON'T KNOW ANY OTHER WAY TO DO IT.

Whats this?

16-acre plot bought for Rs 300 crore in Goregaon

Sunteck Realty has acquired a 16-acre plot at Goregaon for Rs 300 crore, which realty experts have called a bargain deal and an indication of the slowdown in land prices.

Kamal Khetan, chairman and managing director, Sunteck Realty, said, “We took advantage of the bad market and struck a good bargain.”
Half the amount of the acquisition – Rs 150 crore – has been borne by Kotak Private Equity Group. Sunteck struck the deal at Rs 18.75 crore an acre, which is considered reasonable in terms of viability of the project.

Pankaj Kapoor, director, Liasas Foras India Limited, a real estate research firm, said, “The land price determines the viability and the company will make good profits.” He attributed the recent changes in Development Control Rules (DCR), which stopped the tweaking of rules that used to be exploited by builders. Currently, realty rates at Goregaon are in range of Rs 10,000- Rs 12,000 a square foot.

Sunteck already has six acres 200 metres from this plot, taking its current land bank in the area to 23 acres.

Sunteck plans to construct predominantly residential complexes with a small portion also kept aside for commercial and retail activity.

Khetan said the project would be completed within five years. “We will construct luxury apartments with all modern amenities and are sure of changing the skyline of Goregaon,” Khetan said.

But Kapoor rues the fact that the focus will be on luxury housing. “Affordable housing will remain a dream as developers continue to construct luxury apartments that sell at premium prices,” Kapoor said
