Xusein February 16th, 2010, 11:38 PM That is a very nice LRT underground station in Minneapolis. I wasn't aware that they had underground stations there.
It reminds me of a much bigger and nicer version of the Amherst St station here in Buffalo, which is also island platform.
The electronic screens even look similar.

That pic is of the main airport terminal station. They were going to make the downtown section of the rail underground but it was too expensive.
do you have any pics of the buffalo station?

philvia February 18th, 2010, 05:46 AM it would be very hard to find a "visually appealing" station in america lol.. moscow, hands down, has the most beautiful stations.
Xusein February 18th, 2010, 06:40 AM I guess it's up to personal opinion. Perhaps they are not to the beauty of the Moscow Metro, but I think that some of those LA stations are pretty nice. I remember once reading once that they pay more attention to aesthetics and art than other subway agencies...or something like that.
Nexis February 18th, 2010, 10:39 AM Well it may not win any best contests in the looks dept, this station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line is unique. Its one of the deepest stations in the US, @ 160 feet below Union City. The Station was built in the Palisades Tunnel which used to be a Freight tunnel but was sold to NJT in the 1990s, the station opened in 2006.

city_thing February 18th, 2010, 10:54 AM ^^ That last station is quite good.
Those stations from Los Angeles however, they're just hideous. I can't even think of an era or design style in which they'd suit. They're quite simply ugly.
And yes, it is a matter of opinion. And I applaud Los Angeles for actually having a metro, considering what the city is up against.

Kenni February 19th, 2010, 08:56 AM it would be very hard to find a "visually appealing" station in america lol.. moscow, hands down, has the most beautiful stations.
Yes, I agree about Moscow. I like how some cities do incorporate "their image" to the stations.
i.e. those Moscow stations would not fit in L.A.
I guess it's up to personal opinion. Perhaps they are not to the beauty of the Moscow Metro, but I think that some of those LA stations are pretty nice. I remember once reading once that they pay more attention to aesthetics and art than other subway agencies...or something like that.
This is true. The city spends a lot of "moola" in aesthetics, and in trying to make each station reflect the cultural aspects of the neighborhoods they serve...

deasine February 19th, 2010, 10:17 AM I don't get what the last one is trying to look like. And a beam is kind of useless over the stairs and escalator if it doesn't shelter you from rain in a storm.

Fortunately LA is not known for toooo much rain. Also, if you look closely it appears there is a solid strip in the middle of the beam over the stairs (although I am sure it would be of limited use if it were raining hard). With that said, it seems to be rather common in a lot of systems to have escalators/stairs not covered. I can specifically remember in Munich that some are not (which was quite a problem in the downpour when I was there). The same goes for some of the underground stations in Washington DC, which again was a problem for me when I was there.

Seems miscladded, but this "rural hi-tech" style has in common with the fact that the station is outside the Moscow territory.

trainrover February 22nd, 2010, 07:03 PM Post more from Montreal
I love the brutal, unforgiving concrete used throughout Montreal's Metro.
 It's exactly because of the "brutal, unforgiving concrete" that I was just about to reply you "no way!"

Blue raven February 23rd, 2010, 07:39 AM Not exactly a subway station but it's the only train station in Sydney I like, because of the nice harbour view.

deasine February 23rd, 2010, 09:54 AM That is quite a view. I love the glass fare gates at Moscow's system.
Bartje83 February 26th, 2010, 10:01 AM When it finally finishes (estimate is now somewhere around 2017. First estimates were around 2009 I believe :D) the Amsterdam Noord-Zuid lijn is gonna look great :

philvia February 27th, 2010, 05:46 PM Are there modern stations in New York?
there are a few. the new south ferry stop on the 1 train is pretty nice. the new fulton st stations and the WTC path stations will be pretty amazing. the roosevelt island station has a 1950's scyfi vibe to it lol.
i'm currently far too lazy to search for pictures though.
nmuzz February 28th, 2010, 12:02 PM This is Olympic Park Station in Sydney - one of my favourite modern stations. I found these on the net as I don't have any of my own.

Yardmaster March 1st, 2010, 08:56 AM Must say I'm pleasantly surprisied by Los Angeles's efforts here: since it is a city which has developed a very bad reputation for previously shutting its PT systems down.
city_thing March 1st, 2010, 10:23 AM ^^ I once saw an old map of what Los Angeles did have. They sure got rid of a lot! LA was criss-crosed with an amazing amount of rail/tram lines.
I'm going to add North Melbourne to the list. This station sees a lot of action during the day, though it mostly serves as a transfer point as there's not a lot in the vicinity of the station; mostly old factories and other rail lines.

Melbourne's blessed with many surviving old Victorian-era stations, which I'll get around to posting pictures of one day.
1772 March 1st, 2010, 02:33 PM I'm not a big fan of L.A., but that subway was truly remarcable!
Yardmaster March 1st, 2010, 03:37 PM North Melbourne shots look pretty good too.
v_florin March 1st, 2010, 04:17 PM I like Titan station in Bucharest a lot...quite a decent feat of engineering:

Don't remind us :( Los Angeles once had the largest rail system in the world, who would've of thunk it huh?. It was WAY over a thousand miles of track. It baffles me when I see this map because I live here and know the distances. If you look at the map, it even climbed the mountains in the north (Mt Lowe) there were resorts up there.

Yes, but it is costing us dearly for that dreadful mistake. Whom ever the Mayor was back then who killed our Red and Yellow Electric Car System should be resurrected and shot at the spot.

Most of that was because the city controller at the time hated the Hunnington family that owned the pacific electrified rail company (aka red car) and and began dismanteling the system. Also with the construction of the Interstate system LA began to sprawl and it was growing faster than the red car could expand. Not to mention CA's regulatory burden started to grow to unsustainable levels for private rail companies unless you were doing intercity rail (hence why most local lines are now either private/public partnerships or fully govt owned. Also why it takes years to get a system built. INstead of having a private company looking at the most profitable routes city controllers, congressman, and city council members steer projects in ways they have no idea about to pander to constituents and other interests in their district.
I still say if hunington were alive today, even starting where we are at with our current metro system he could cut the cost per mile in half and increase the construction speed.
