16000 places? I remember reading about a project in Bucharest with 8.000 places.
I really like it, it's an enteresting idea. And 50 million euro is not that much, considering that the new arena in Cluj (not the football one, but the multipurpose arena) will cost about 46 million euro and it only has 7.000 seats.

Below is a press release from the Bucharest City:

Arena Bucurestilor:

Proiectul "Arena Bucurestilor" ce urmeaza sa inceapa in acest an, va contribui la crearea unei infrastructurii care sa permita situarea Bucurestiului in randul marilor centre culturale ale lumii.

Bucureştiul este prima scenă culturală a ţării, dar din pacate, nici o infrastructură in domeniu nu are în acest moment capacitatea găzduirii unui eveniment de anvergură internaţională.

"Arena Bucurestilor", ce se va realiza printr-un parteneriat public-privat este cel mai mare complex sportiv, de agrement si social din Romania ce va gazdui: concerte, mari manifestari sportive, expozitii, targuri, evenimente sociale si de afaceri;

Source (http://www1.pmb.ro/pmb/primar/cpresa/2010/comunicate/com_2010-02-18_a.html)

For those who do not understand Romanian, the Arena will have up to 16.000 seats, 1, 000 parking spots, and works are to be tendered soon.

The municipality of Bucharest made an announcement that they will build a new hall for the city this year in autumn or at the start of 2011, after the new National Stadium will be completed, even Romania wasn't chosen to be the host of the 2009 World Men's Handball Championship.

The price is so big because the arena will be included in a complex which can host concerts, expo, social and business eveniments. They discuss now also the possibility of building an Aqua Park too in the complex.

It will be built in a park, Tineretului, but it will also protect the environment. There are money because my source is telling me that the cession contract was completed these days.

I will come later with more news after the cession contract will also be revealed for the press.

This seems to be taking off by mid-year. But it's going to be a 20,000 seater. Source (http://www.a1.ro/news/economic/elena-udrea-face-sala-polivalenta-cu-20-000-de-locuri-in-bucuresti-148749.html)

Do you think they will need more hotel capacity in the city to go with the new stadium?

This is official now. It'll go near the current almost completed national stadium:

The skating rink will be demolished and the biggest polyvalent hall will be built in its stead

The building where the Flamaropol Skating Rink functions presently will be demolished, and on the same place, there will be built the big polyvalent hall, Development and Tourism Minister Elena Udrea told a press conference on Thursday. The complex will be built in collaboration with sector two administration and will cover 16,000 seats.

“The Polyvalent Hall, one that Bucharest hasn’t had so far will be built by the National Stadium on the ground of Flamaropol Skating Rink. This location was chosen due to all sorts of facilities we have in the area plus a parking lot. The building will be raised over a short periof of time. We are now working on studies then the technical project will be executed,” Minister Udrea said.

"The hall will have 16,000 seats and we hope it will be done by next year,” Udrea also added. She explained the investment is of about 50 million euro. “I would like to ensure the price will not go double for the Polyvalent Hall, as it happened with the National Stadium,” Udrea also said.

In April this year, the national Investment Company under authority of the Development Ministry informed they would like to start building a 20,000 place polyvalent hall in Bucharest, a project estimated at about 50 million euro. The date for bidding procedures is July 1 and the contract will last for 30 months according to a company intention statement.

Flamaropol Skating Rink also known as 23 August or the National Rink is placed on Basarabia Boulevard, between Piata Muncii and the Lia Manoliu Stadium principal entry. The Flamaropol skating rink in Bucharest will be demolished ans replaced by a sports hall of 16,000 seats, according to Romania’s Regional Development and Tourism Minister Elena Udrea. The investment in the new hall will be of EUR 50 million and will be carried on through the National Investments Company. Very good news, we are starting to add more and more facilities in this city.

It's going to be good for our handball teams but even basketball and ice hockey can receive encouragements from it.
BTW, why didn't they choose to build it where the old Polivalenta is?

The renders shown here are not correct because that hall will be made by the municipality of Bucharest (Oprescu) in the Tineretului Park. We're talking about another project here, the one proposed by the Minister of Regional Development and Tourism (Udrea) built next to the National Stadium and the renders are not yet out.

So Bucharest has two 16k sports hall projects...

this is not the 16,000 hall, but one part of the complex which will also include some other training halls for gymnastics, weightlifting, judo, box or athletics.

it will be a complex, i dont know why you posted this here, because when i started it was with the new Polivalenta near the old current Polivalenta, in the park.

this one of yours, will not be build up by the municipality, but by the minister of Udrea. :) and instead of the Ice Rink Flamaropol, which will be demolished. the hall will work also as a rink, multi-f!

so there are 2 different halls

I posted the picture because LeClerk posted (post 15, 16 ,17) news about the one proposed by Udrea, and this thread is not about that hall, so I thought that many people made a confusion between the 2 and I wanted to clarify things up.

There should be 2 threads - one for this one (Tineretului) and another thread for the one that's going to be built instead of the Ice Rink Flamaropol.
