Kazan city has built a building in neo-empire style (or just eclecticism). It's interesting and very massive experiment in neoclassical architecture:

Main construction has already finished, waiting spring to make a park near this building. Building is used for agriculture organizations, strange decision but it's a fact. More photos:

That tree and the cupola look somewhat disgraceful.

Otherwise it indeed is an impressive result. As much as I'm in love with neohistorism, I just don't know what to think of this building. :dunno: It obviously is quite a bit over the top.

I think it is beautiful. Those who are complaining do not understand evolution. Just because the building is neoclassical it doesn't mean it can't evolve. By it's very name Neoclassical architecture is an evolution of Classical... etc. I think this building is a masterpiece and I love the direction in which it is going.

Its a very impressive building but I don't like it much. Sorry. It looks like it should be in Las Vegas, not a serious goverment buildlng.

fantastic,it looks great, and there needs to be more of this stuff.

I'm all for futuristic style, but not blinkered by purists - I'm more a pluralist.

looks pretty good, but I believe that architecture should represent the historical moment in Which it is built.

anyway looks very well built

^As far as architecture is concerned, I'm a puritanical purist :(

What's the equivalent of witch-burning in the world of architecture?

I don't mind modern interpretations.

For example, here's a modern interpretation of the traditional Armenian architecture:

Cathedral of St Gregory the Illuminator - Yerevan - 1997-2001 - architect Stepan Kurkchyan

But the dome on the Kazan building makes baby-Jesus cry. I wish they would alter it.

I love neo baroque, but this building looks somehow extremely tacky.
And the backyard is just aweful!

Although I think you are right, I have to say that modern stuctures can be very interesting and beautiful as well. But sadly, in a lot of cases, they don't. Your opinion would kill you in the place where I live, Rotterdam (NL). People here really seem to think that a metropolis can be built with just high (they are not high, they are average) buildings and straight lines. OK,The town was bombed, then it was further demolished and now it is becoming a no man's land between cheap and iconic creatures. Some beauty luckily remains, though.

Why do I write all this? I think historism is becoming more and more popular and we can see that the quality of it is getting better with the years. I would love to see these new neostyles more accepted and appreciated in order to make something of a halt to the trend to build those fake and empty Manhattan/Dubai-wannabestructures and cities around the world. For places without history or lost history, I think it is quite OK, but nowadays it seems people are building 'skyscrapers' in every shithole...

Concerning this one in Kazan, I think it is a little over the top, if not far. And the lights make it even more kitschy. From a distance, it's absolutely amazing, but the details (dome)... mmmh, dunno....

I agree with you completly...whats happening in places like Rotterdam, and so many other cities, specially in western world, is that new wanna be arquitects hate this old historic rebuilding because leaves no room for their moment of glory, wich at the end its just ruining the centers of so many cities, making them cold, empty and look all alike, just for their ego...someone has to put an end to this crap and tell those people that on top of their ego, an arquitect is devoted to the place and the history of the town !!
About the Kazan building, I find it amazing and very brave to build such a historic bulding in those days of "we all look the same dubai, shangay wanna be's "...maybe the tree door is a bit to out of place....but the rest, BRAVO !!

As I guess, it was experimental mix of old and new Hofburg palaces in Empire and Neo-Empire styles.

I like it very much in overall, but in my personal opinion there are some aspects in this that don't match the entire building like that tree and the lights they put in the dome. For the rest, is a very modern building of certain age, hahaha, but I think is the right response to that ugly messi new building they are making everywhere.

I'm not generally against reviving old styles, but this is an example how not to do it. It looks so tacky and weird (especially the cupola and the tree) and simply not genuine as a whole.

It's such a shame they couldn't put the Palatino or Trajan font on the corinthian order frieze. These kinds of font are the most pertinent for classic entablatures. Instead, they put the Times New Roman (Bold), which really ruins the whole building.
