The Cubao kapilya along E. Rodriguez Avenue was designed by Architect Carlos Santos-Viola. It was started in 1953 and dedicated on January 29, 1954. One feature which characterized INC houses of worship of this era was the existence of a covered porch or terrace at the front and the sides of the building. The Cubao kapilya is also one of the few kapilyas that was constructed with a parabolic shell interior. Being one of the earliest concrete chapels, it rustles with English Gothicism evident in the trefoils, quatrefoils, cusps, arches and oak leaf motifs.

Immaculate Conception Basilica
Batangas City

Built in 1857. The present church began in 1851 due to the increased population. Father Pedro Cuesta, the parish priest undertook the construction after having the torn down the old church. It was granted Basilica status by Pope Pius XII. “Given in Rome, at St. Peters, with the seal of the Fisherman, on the 13th day of February in the year 1948, the tenth of our Pontificate -1948.” Text from a copy of the actual letter written in Rome to grant the Batangas Catholic Church its appointment as Basilica.

San Jose Church
San Jose, Batangas

This church was built by the Augustinian friar Fr. Manuel Blanco in 1812. It has a large one-aisle interior and is remarkable for its restored main altar, geometrical decorations and flowery capitals on the columns. The church is a paragon of Baroque architecture in the Philippines, and combines this with the neo-classical lines of an adjacent convent. The pulpit and canopy is study in intricate carvings of local flora.

San Sebastian Cathedral
Lipa City

Built in the Romanesque tradition with circular dome, massive walls and balconies the cathedral is the center of Sunday workship in the historic town of Lipa,Batangas. Lipa Cathedral was originally built to honor St. Sebastian.

Its first grand transept was completed in 1865 but after the war, it underwent massive reconstruction. This beautiful church has an architecture which used columns and arches in an ascending and descending order, creating the effect of a shadow and-light play. The domes of the church and bell tower have intricate moldings and arched stained-glass windows. The nave or body of the church is barrel- vaulted and now illuminated by modern chandeliers. The church also features a winding stairway to the choir loft.

Taal town in Batangas has a huge plaza fronting the Basilica of St. Martin de Tours said to be the biggest church in Asia. convent reduced to ashes..

as for the church, I think the walls, facade and belltower are still there since it's made of stone anyway..

Problem is when they restore/rebuild it. I hope they won't alter the facade or what, ehehe..

^^ Diosmio!! What a sad day for the Oslobnons. I was lucky to see that old tisa-roofed convento.

So it was a computer that lead to a fire into the convent. My thoughts are with you Arnold, that hopefuly the facade and the belfry wouldn't be altered. Hopefuly the priest who will undertake the rehabilitation project of the church would be knowledgable enough not to corrupt some aspects in church design.

Anyway, are there any pictures of the Oslob Church now?

Remember the line "Sto. Nino sa Pandacan, Puto seco sa tindahan..." from one of our folk songs. I didn't know where Pandacan is then but I sure thought they had puto seco as their chief product.

Devotion to the Sto. Nino seems to be steep among the populace of Pandacan where its feast is celebrated every 2nd week of January. In a well near the Catholic church, the image of the Sto. Nino was said to have been recovered and that the water of the well had miraculous properties. The well has since been sealed due to the presence of pollutants.

The first stone church was started in 1712. It would be destroyed by earthquakes again and again. A modern church built in 1971 now stands in place of its former incarnations.

Iloilo parish church declared diocesan shrine
04/05/2008 | 07:31 AM

MANILA, Philippines- A parish church in a town in Iloilo province has been declared a diocesan shrine, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Saturday.

CBCP president Angel Lagdameo signed on Friday the decree making the Leganes town’s St. Vincent Ferrer parish church, which marked its 150th anniversary, a diocesan shrine.

The decree was read during the dedication and consecration mass stating that the Parish Church of St. Vincent Ferrer in Leganes, Iloilo, was now a Diocesan Shrine, "in accordance with Church law, with all the duties, rights and privileges given to a Diocesan Shrine by the Code of Canon Law, as well as other Church documents, particularly the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy."

"In the 150 years of its existence as a parish, the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer in Leganes, Iloilo has locally fulfilled the same functions as shrines, even without canonical recognition. This Church has formed part of the "topography" of the faith and of the popular piety of the people of God, not only in the Island of Panay, but also in the nearby Island of Negros as well as the adjoining islands in the Visayas," the decree said.

It added that faithful the town as well as those in neighboring towns flock to the Church the whole year round to fulfill their promises or 'panaad' and to invoke heavenly intercession of their beloved St. Vincent Ferrer.

Leganes town marked its town fiesta on Saturday.

The CBCP statement said thousands of devotees and visitors were expected to flock the parish church to seek the intercession of St. Vincent Ferrer.- GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/87817/Iloilo-parish-church-declared-diocesan-shrine)

Yes exactly. They're the ones doing restoration works on almost all the historical pipe organs of the country -- San Agustin, Las Piñas, etc..etc..

Aside from that, they also manufacture pipe organs following the tradition of Fr. Diego Cera, some of which have been exported to Europe.

Yes they do call it mecca. However, mecca here does not refer to the muslim's Mecca. you know, mecca is also used as to describe a place with a great gathering though the latter was still based on the former word. I mean it was never in the rule of Literature that derived nouns must not be used to describe other nouns. It does create an identity crisis though.

we should not forget that Manaoag is also called the Mecca of the North

^^ Actually, i would prefer to call it "pilgrimage sites" since it attracts pilgrims. Like Cebu's Santo Nino, Naga's Penafrancia, Manila's Nazareno, Iloilo's Candelaria, Pangasinan's Manaoag.

Kasi usually in PR (proofreading), the word "mecca" is used in a more secular way, such as a hub of economic importance.

Built in 1967, the Tondo house of worship is one of those designed by architect Carlos Santos-Viola. It was the INC's largest until the Central Temple in Quezon City was completed in 1984. A recent renovation not only gave it a fresh coat of paint, granite flooring, and an expanded lobby; it has also increased its seating capacity from 5000 to 6000.

Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, Agoo, La Union

Agoo lies between San Fabian, Pangasinan and Bauang, La Union. Worth seeing in Agoo is the Agoo Basilica, which was built in 1892 after a severe earthquake. Probably the most beautiful church in La Union, it has a Shrine of Our Lady and is the most important place of pilgrimage in the province during Holy Week.

The Main Features of the facade of the church, on each pilaster at the lower section are topped by the statues of St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Margaret of Hungary, St. Catherine of Sienna and St. Dominic of Guzman. The doors of the main entrance are decorated with an engraved Dominican insignia. Set between the church and the convent, the bell tower measures approximately 32 feet in height whose summit is cappped by a white cross.

Most pilgrims in Manaoag commonly observe lighting a candle, when they visit the shrine. With their increasing number, the Candle Gallery was renovated. At present, it has a bigger space, and has more rows of candle stands

With the overwhelming support of the Cebu Provincial Gov't., lots of towns in Cebu are now establishing "heritage groups." The Cebu Archdiocesan Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church went to these towns to conduct seminars/trainings, etc.

Photos below: A seminar about Church Patrimony, History of Dalaguete Church, etc.. conducted at the San Guillermo del Hermitaño Church in Dalaguete, Cebu.

A country without a memory, is a country of madmen. -- George Santayana

If all uninformed tour guides are to be believed, our churches are held together with cement and egg white like the confections they are. In my former life as NCCA’s legal conservationist, I’ve had some side-ripping tourist moments as some enthusiastic guide with more guesswork than research attempted to explain their history factoids with gossip and superstition.

Philippine churches are primary tourism targets and a booming industry surrounds them. Unlike many of their European counter-parts, these churches remain in use, and are thus showcases of continuing history. Over thirty of them have been declared national cultural treasures and World Heritage Sites.

Because of renewed interest in these structures, the informality of accreditation systems for tour guides (not to mention the downright politics of some of their appointments) and too few sources of information on the histories of both the locales and structures, too many have taken up occupations as “tour guides” using savvy business sense and not much else. The result is a disastrous mish mash of misinformation that often bewilders the educated and damages the uninformed.

A common theme among these guides is a small but significant footnote in the construction methods of these churches. Too many times, I have heard a guide say that the churches are made of adobe and were put together using egg whites, which gave rise to local delicacies like the leche flan. To my consternation, this was uttered during a local government-sponsored tour of Iloilo. The guide was referring to the sandstone Miag-ao Church, a World Heritage Site, which has no record of being built with egg whites and is nowhere near a source of adobe. We do know that it is held together with a lime plaster.

Lime plasters were mixed with various materials, according to the Philippine expert on ecclesiastical heritage, Ricky Jose, among them crushed shells, sand, lime, water, animal blood and yes, in some instances, duck eggs. National Museum restoration engineer Orlando Abinion adds that animal manure was also used in some instances. It is the duck eggs that perhaps led to the belief that egg whites were used.
Jose however says that the records are unclear on whether the whole duck egg or just its egg white was mixed in with the plaster. While there is no clear correlation between the building of the churches and delicacies made of egg yolk such as yema, tocino del cielo and leche flan, it’s certainly a tantalizing idea. This is not enough, however, to say that all churches are built of adobe and egg whites.

In fact, not all churches were built of adobe. Their locations usually determined the material to be used. Churches in Manila and some from the Southern Tagalog regions were made of adobe, which can still be sourced in these areas, the best of which still comes from Bulacan. When the Intramuros walls were being restored in the 1970s, new blocks of adobe were cut to fill in portions of the walls that had been removed. To ensure authenticity, the stone masons were trained to cut the adobe stone in the same manner as the original stone of the walls were cut.

In the Visayas and parts of Mindanao, many of the churches are made of coral stone, save for others like Miag-ao’s Sto. Tomas de Villanueva, which is of sandstone. Others are made of volcanic rock and still others were built using river stone held together with the lime plaster. Others were built with a combination of these materials and locally produced brick, such as those beautiful churches in Northern Luzon. If one looks carefully, the remains of the large hornos (ovens) in which these bricks were baked can still be seen on church grounds. The Tumauini Church is a symphony in various sizes of brick made for the purpose.

However, if we must insist that our churches were built with eggs, the records say that the dome of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the former parish of the Intramuros now better known as the Manila Cathedral, was sealed in 1780 with a mixture of lime, powdered brick, duck eggs and bamboo sap, again according to Ricky Jose. Two hundred duck eggs are also said to have to have been used on a convento in Imus.

As far as old churches go in various places in the country, I hear many local tour guides who love to boast that their church is the oldest in the Philippines. However, if the church is not located in Intramuros, then it’s not likely to be true. According to curator of the San Agustin church museum, Father Pedro Galende, OJA, two churches were built at the time Miguel Lopez de Legazpi occupied the area that was Raja Matanda’s former fort, now known as the Intramuros.

These two churches were San Agustin and what is now the Manila Cathedral. The original church of San Agustin, made of wood and nipa, was built in 1571. The structure burned down in 1574 after the raids directed by the pirate Lima Hong. The structure that was rebuilt also burned down in 1583, when the draperies caught fire during the wake of Governador Ganzalvo Ronquillo. After the structure burned down again in 1586, the Agustinian provincial met with his council and they passed a resolution ordering the building of a stone church.

This stone church, whose construction began in 1591 was finished in 1607, is the same structure standing in
Intramuros today. It was declared a World Heritage Site and acknowledged as the oldest church in the country.

This bit of history notwithstanding, the funniest tour guide comment I have ever had the privilege to hear is this nugget from a Northern Luzon guide: “Our church is the oldest church in the entire country. Even before the Spaniards came, it was already there.”

^^ Uy, a nice camposanto there! :okay:

I noticed that the Bicol Spainish colonial stone churches are quite dark gray to black. Was it because most of the stones are volcanic rock which is prevalent in Bicol?

In Visayas its mostly light gray to whitish or off-white.

Vatican to help save RP churches
By Evelyn Macairan
Saturday, May 31, 2008

The government recently signed a landmark treaty with the Vatican to protect and maintain old churches in the country.

The CBCPNews.com yesterday said the treaty, the first between the two countries, is for the preservation of heritage Catholic churches.

The bilateral agreement was ratified at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Pasay City last Thursday by DFA Secretary Alberto Romulo and Papal Nuncio Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams.

The agreement was earlier signed by Pope Benedict XVI and President Arroyo.

Archbishop Adams assured the Philippine government that the Vatican is committed to “mutual cooperation” in the proper care of old churches which have been existing in the country for the past 400 years.

“It is a fact that what constitutes the cultural patrimony of this nation takes its origin from the Church and was contributed by her agents,” Adams said.

He said the historical pact is a major move in ensuring the protection of the country’s old churches “which the Church continues to utilize for its pastoral activities and evangelization.”

Romulo, for his part, said that both states have taken a meaningful step towards maintaining, protecting and preserving the “value of symbols of spirituality.”

Heritage churches, including their properties and artifacts, are more than just worldly possessions, he said, adding that they are “concrete expressions and enduring representations of profound faith.”

Also part of the accord is the implementation of measures on the regulation of Church properties through property inventory, restoration, anti-trafficking, custody and security, archiving and promotion of tourism in the heritage site

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will implement the bilateral agreement.

It was clarified that the treaty does not involve financial support from the Vatican but the Philippine government will help with the research and funding.

Among those who witnessed the ceremony were Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, CBCP-Committee for the Cultural Heritage of the Church chairman Bp. Julito Cortes, National Historical Institute Deputy Executive Director Emelita Almosara and Commissioner Carmen Padilla of the UNESCO’s Culture Committee.

^^This is good news but I find it ironic that one of the witnesses was Cardinal Rosales. It was under him as bishop of the Archdiocese of Lipa, that the church of San Juan, Batangas was needlessly renovated. And also the old kumbento, part of which was used by St. Bridget's College (it was long used as a school by the RGS nuns) of the church of the Immaculate Conception in Batangas City was demolished. Add to this the McDonalds in the church compound of Balayan, Batangas.

I like old churches from a historical viewpoint. i have photographed a few here in Negros Oriental. This one is in Zamboanguita. Unfortunately I have not reseached and do not have any details, perhaps my next trip... Obviously early Spanish colonial without too much "restorative" meddling. Built from cobblestones. As can be seen they are putting a new green metal roof on it, I suppose we should be grateful that a roof at all is being replaced.

The first church in Makati City was named in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1603, in response to a petition made by Spanish and Filipino devotees. The Virgin of Guadalupe reportedly appeared in 1531 in Mexico to an Aztec Indian named Juan Diego.

‘Ave Maria’ concert raises funds for Sta. Ana church

By Josephine Darang
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 04:04:00 06/08/2008

MANILA, Philippines - Listening to opera singers sing “Ave Maria” by different composers is like listening to angels singing in Heaven. That was our experience when we heard sopranos Rachelle Gerodias and Gloria Dizon-Coronel and baritone Noel Azcona give different renditions of the famous hymn done by various composers. This was on the occasion of the feast of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Abandoned) at the Camarin de la Virgen in Sta. Ana Church last May 27.

Conceptualized by banker-impresario Danny Dolor, the afternoon concert was seen by Jaime Laya, the Cofradia de la Inmaculada Concepcion founded by Imelda Cojuangco, and other Marian devotees.

The event formalized the participation of Laya and the Cofradia in the restoration of the Camarin, which had been initially submitted for study to the National Museum and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) by Fr. Eli Manlangit, parish priest; Jessie Coe Lichauco of the parish pastoral executive committee; and Philip Escudero. The work of restoration will require considerable expense and a good art restorer.

The exquisitely built chapel behind the ornately carved baroque retablo of the main altar carries valuable oil-on-wood paintings attached to the ceiling and beautiful images of different saints. The cape of the Virgin flowing from her crowned head facing the people is kissed and venerated. Called pahalik, the ritual is observed by devotees going up the piedra china steps leading to the Camarin and kissing the veil and whispering prayers to her. The chapel was built in 1718.

The blue and white porcelain tiles on the flooring are of Spanish origin and believed to have been brought to the country during the galleon trade in the early 18th century.

The only existing paintings belonging to the short-lived estampita age of the Fil-Spanish art period richly adorn the entire ceiling of the Camarin chapel. These frescoes in all their grandeur and majesty depict the life and glorification of Jesus and Mary.

The paintings, which were painstakingly retouched by Antonio Dumlao, Sr. in 1978, became for many years the subject of research studies on account of the various forms and styles executed by different schools of painters. Now, they are deteriorating and need to be restored.

First concert

Danny Dolor made history when he orchestrated the first concert at the Camarin de la Virgin. The afternoon of Marian songs began with “Bendita Cea” (A. Roa), sung by the trio.

Then Gerodias did “Ave Maria” by F. Santiago and J. Schubert. The song, which means “Hail Mary” in Latin, exults the Virgin as blessed at the same time cries to her for help.

With Julie Mendoza on the piano, Gerodias in that inimitable way of hers rendered the song with pathos, bringing tears to our eyes.

Baritone Azcona did the F. Gounod version, while Coronel sang “Santa Maria” by Ernani Cuenco and “Ave Maria” by R. Santos.

Tenor Philip Escudero, who is the recamadero of Our Lady of the Abandoned, expressed his love for the Virgin by singing “Ave Maria” by Father Cagsawan.

The concert was a one of a kind experience. It lifted our spirits and brought us to pleasant feelings of security and love of Mary.

Dolor said that we need sacred concerts these times of turmoil and uncertainty to lift us up.

Sta. Ana church

Jessie Coe Lichauco, 96, has lived in Sta. Ana all her life. When her family was offered to buy a property in Forbes Park, she declined and said she wanted to live in Sta. Ana and be close to the Virgen de los Desamparados. Today, we also find comfort as we pray to her.

Healing Mass

Fr. Zenki Manabat will celebrate a Healing Mass on June 14 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Parish on Cordillera Street, Quezon City. For details, text 0921-7909361.

The Kapatiran of San Antonio de Padua in Mendez, Cavite, will mark its 75th year with a Thanksgiving Mass on June 14 at 9 a.m. at the San Isidro Labrador Parish.

The St. Anthony Shrine in Bustillos, Sampaloc, on the other hand, will show a film on the saint on June 9 at 7:15 p.m., according to Miguel Alcantara of Phil. Bank of Communications.

More funds needed for Oslob church reconstruction

CEBU CITY, Philippines - Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal said there is still no specific date for when the reconstruction of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Oslob town, south of Cebu, will be started with only less than P1 million in collections so far for the project.

“Aside from the parish collections, from the second collections and other fund raising activities like the benefit concert, we now have P700,000 plus,” the prelate told Cebu Daily News (CDN) on Thursday.

The Cardinal said he is still waiting for word from the engineers and architects that the archdiocese has consulted for the reconstruction of the church, which was razed by fire last March 26, 2008.

“We still have to be sure about the architecture and engineering (aspect) of the project before work can be started. We have to see if it (the church) is still strong enough to hold the roofing,” Vidal said.

However, conservation architect Melva Rodriguez-Java, a member of the Cebu Archdiocesan Commission of the Cultural Heritage of the Church, said the amount collected so far was not enough to start the expensive reconstruction work on the 161-year-old church.

“It would cost us (to reconstruct the church) about P25,000 to P30,000 per square meter,” she told CDN, adding that she could not give an estimate as to the total cost of the entire project.

The church, which was about 64 meters long, 15 meters wide and nine meters high, was struck by fire three times since it was built.

The first was in 1942 when Filipino guerrillas burned down the church and only the walls and the columns, which were made of coral stones, were left of the church.

Based on the book “Angels in Stone” written by Father Pedro Galende, OSA, a second fire of unknown origin hit the church in 1955 that gutted the whole complex except for the masonry wall of both buildings.

The third time that the church was burned down was in March this year. Fire officials said the fire was caused by faulty wirings.

Architect Java, who gave a lecture on the Oslob church renovation on Thursday at the Cebu Cathedral Museum, said she and her students from the University of San Carlos College of Architecture were able to make drawings of the various designs of the doors and windows of the church.

She said that these patterns can be used as basis for the reconstruction work.

She added that there are “two very fragile things that survived the fire,” the high relief of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and the flowers that can be found beside the walls of the church.

“The image (of the Virgin Mary) is carved in wood while the flowers that survived were right at the side of the wall (of the church) that got burned,” she said.

The Massive Church Of San Nicolas de Tolentino in the town of Cabatuan, Iloilo(the largest red brick structure in the Visayas) is noted to one of the country's "Architectural Achievements" It is a Neoclassic Church of baked bricks which is given a touch of latin American Style.
The early foundations of the church were said to be constructured in 1733 but were solidified in 1834. It is said to be the third largest Church in the Province of Iloilo following the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Molo Church(Tallest Church in the Province). Cabatuan Church is known not only for its carroty walls and its massive dome covered twin towers but for the three facades which faces the North, The South and the West that makes it the only existing Hispanic Church to have more than one facade in the country.

The Church is surprisingly large for a small Colonial town. It beautifully exeplifies Latin American Colonial Church for most of its details are inspired by Latin American Architecture.

An interesting fact about Cabatuan Church is that like its neighboring church(Iglesia de Santa barbara) The antique Santo Nino on one of the church retablos does not appear like the usual Santo Nino there is in the country which are inspired by the famed Santo Nino de Cebu.. (The Nino in Cabatuan and Santa Barbara Churches could have been even inspired by an older Child Jesus because the features on its face are more matured compared to that of the typical Nino)

Another interesting fact is that there are two replicas of the 'Arc of the Covenant' found inside the church of Cabatuan. The more intricate replica lies in the center of the main retablo and the older one is hidden on on room inside the church.

The Baptistery Chapel of the Church is also noted to be the most spacious Christening chapel in Iloilo Province.

Cabatuan is a small agricultural town which is a 10 minute ride from the new Iloilo Airport and a 30-40 minute ride from Downtown Iloilo City.

^^

In 1933, when the then diocese of Cebu was elevated to an archdiocese, the left part of the facade of the cathedral (in the photo) was extended towards the belltower thus making the facade of the church look bigger. There was also a slight expansion of the facade to the right. Only the facade was expanded since the entire church itself was still cruciform.

During the 1990s renovation/expansion, the slight expansion at the right side of the church was further expanded so that the facade of the cathedral now looks symmetrical. The main body of the church itself too was expanded on both sides so the church was no longer cruciform in form but somewhat boxy.

Here's the photo after the 1933 renovations:

The cathedral after the 1990s renovations:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b396/arnoldsa/CebuHeritageWalk/beautifulChurches/Cebu_Cathedral/cebu_metropolitan_cathedral_stitch0.jpg

During the World War II raids, the Cathedral was bombed and only the thick walls, the facade, and the belfy survived. It was quickly rebuilt. Between the time the cathedral was rebuilt after the war until the 1990s renovation, I think the interiors underwent improvements based on photos that I've seen. In the early 1950s-1960s the ceiling of the cathedral was just simple, there was no choirloft but there was a pulpit. The altar too was just very simple set in a bare white wall.

In the 1970s to late 1980s photos that I've seen, the ceiling is now decorated with carved wood balusters. The ceiling too is flooded with lights. The pulpit is gone. There is already a choirloft and a pipe organ. The altar is the same but this time capped with a baldachino.

Here is a photo of the interiors prior to the 1990s renovation,

^^are those openings in the roof? or was it just that the roofing wasnt installed yet?

btw, my lola was right, the cathedral's interiors looked somewhat better before the latest renovations...

and oh, those 'white' boxes on the ceiling, whether they be openings or not...maybe with a little art, they'd make good skylights...with stained glass maybe

This church needs a make-over. The paint is already peeling. Calling on the Archdiocese of Lipa...

Ngayon ko lang yan nahalata, but when I thought of it, oo nga, especially the churches in Albay, with the exception of course of the Albay Cathedral. Might really be because of the presence of Mayon and Isarog, which is still an active volcano during the Spanish times.

The first time I've been to Manila Cathedral was last February.

It's very beautiful and massive. So far it's the biggest and tallest church that I've been to. I haven't been to the one in Taal though and to San Sebastian.

I agree. For me, siguro ang pinakamataas na Catholic church na napuntahan ko ang Manila Cathedral.

Sa mga napuntahan ko, eto yung observation ko...
Tallest - Manila Cathedral (Manila)
Biggest - Sto Domingo Church (Quezon City)
Longest - Redemptorist/Baclaran Church (Pasay)
Most Beautiful (Interior)- San Agustin Church (Manila)
Most Beautiful (Exterior)- Manila Cathedral (Manila)

Then, nagtravel naman ako sa google Earth... :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/oreo1684/Churches.jpg
(Eye Alt = 201 m)

The first church at the left (cross-shape) is the Manila Cathedral.
Next is the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran (White - Longest).
The last at the left is the Sta. Cruz Church in Manila.

The first picture at the right is the Binondo Church (Manila).
Next is the Quiapo Church (Manila).
And the biggest is the Sto. Domingo church in Quezon City.

By Mahar Mangahas (http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20080726-150769/Filipinos-exceptional-religiosity)
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:03:00 07/26/2008

MANILA, Philippines—Filipinos, whether Catholic or not, are exceptionally religious, compared to other Christian peoples of the world. My basis for saying this is the 1998 Survey on Religion of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), done in 30 countries.

Strength of belief in God. In 1998, 79 percent of Filipinos—second only to Chile’s 81 percent— chose this ardent response to one of the ISSP questions: I know God exists and I have no doubts about it. This was the average of 78 percent among Catholics, a much higher 89 percent among other Christians, and 76 percent among non-Christians (mainly Muslims) in the Philippines.

True belief was much less common in predominantly Catholic Poland (69 percent), Portugal (60), Ireland (50), Italy (48), Spain (45), and Austria (32), which together I call the “Catholic West” or CW. It was also much less in predominantly non-Catholic, but Christian, United States (60), the Netherlands (26), Great Britain [not United Kingdom, as an Inquirer copyreader mistakenly put into last week’s column] (22), and Germany-West (23), which together I call the “Non-Catholic West” or NCW. The only Latin American member in ISSP at the time of the 1998 survey was Chile; now there are many more, so in the future we shall be able to make wider comparisons.

Here are the other responses and their Philippine percentages: While I have doubts, I feel that I do believe in God (13); I find myself believing in God some of the time, but not at others (3); I don’t believe in a personal God, but I do believe in a Higher Power of some kind (3); I don’t know whether there is a God and I don’t believe there is any way to find out (1); and I don’t believe in God (1). The last two are the agnostics and the atheists respectively. A friend has suggested the terms “traditional believers” for the first two and “unorthodox believers” for the third.

Persistence of belief in God. In 1998, 90 percent of Filipinos—No. 1 among the 30 ISSP countries, ahead of No. 2 Chile’s 87—chose to say: I believe in God now and I always have. The 1998 percentages among Catholics, other Christians and non-Christians were 90, 92, and 92 respectively. (In the new 2008 ISSP Religion survey already done by SWS, the Philippine results are not markedly changed for any of the items used in this column; but since the other countries’ data will not be ready for quite some time, I will only cite 1998 figures for the sake of comparison.)

On the other hand, in Spain (76), the United States (75), the CW in general (77), and the NCW in general (54), persistent believers in God were significantly fewer than in the Philippines.

Other choices of response, and the Philippine percentages, were: I believe in God now, but I didn’t use to (3); I don’t believe in God, but I used to (2); and I don’t believe in God now and I never have (3).

Is there life after death? In 1998, 85 percent of Filipinos answered either Yes, definitely or Yes, probably—the highest of all the ISSP countries, far ahead of Chile’s second place of 75 percent. The percentages among Filipino Catholics, other Christians and non-Christians were 84, 91, and 88 respectively.

But in the United States (71), Spain (49), the CW (59), and the NCW (55), believers in life after death were much fewer than in the Philippines.

Belief in heaven. In 1998, Philippines again topped the ISSP countries, with the percentage of believers in heaven at 95—far ahead of Chile’s second place at 81. The percentages among Filipino Catholics, other Christians and non-Christians were 94, 97, and 100 respectively.

But the United States (77), Spain (46), the CW (57), and the NCW (50), had much fewer believers in heaven.

Belief in hell. In 1998, the Philippines had the No. 1 percentage of believers in hell, at 85— ahead of Portugal’s No. 2 at 61, and Chile’s No. 3 at 57. The percentages among Filipino Catholics, other Christians and non-Christians were 84, 92, and 88 respectively.

But the United States (65), Spain (33), the CW (44), and the NCW (35), had much fewer believers in hell.

Respect for other religions. When asked if There is truth only in one religion or There are basic truths in many religions or There is very little truth in any religion, most Filipinos (42 percent) gave the first answer. But most people in the United States (70), Spain (44), the CW (53), and the NCW (64) gave the second, open-minded, answer.

Self-assessed religiosity. The ISSP country with the highest percentage of respondents calling themselves extremely, very, or somewhat religious was the Philippines (81). Next came Portugal (76), and the United States (71).

Churchgoing. In 1998, the No. 1 ISSP country in weekly attendance of religious services was Ireland (61 percent). No. 2 was the Philippines (46). Much lower were the United States (31), Spain (22), the CW (31), and the NCS (17).

Thus the Philippines tops the 30 ISSP countries in adamancy of religious beliefs. Yet its Catholics are not as strident as its other Christians.

Among Catholic peoples, Spaniards have relatively weak religiosity. Americans tend to be more religious than Spaniards, and hence are closer to Filipinos. So did the Philippines really get Christianity from Spain?

Several years ago, when I told the eminent psychologist, Fr. Jaime Bulatao, S.J. (author of the essay “Split-level Christianity”) that the surveys did not make Filipinos seem particularly Catholic, or even particularly Christian, he just flashed a big smile and said, “Actually, we are ANIMIST.”

@Icarus: I'm curious about the architectural design of the INC churches. What is that design style and who was the architect who first designed the first INC church?

Does the detailing on the facade and the spires have any significance?

There's no single exterior design. Though they may look similar, they are not exactly alike. There is a pattern but variations are allowed within the form. The uniformity in style makes INC church buildings distinct from buildings of other religious organizations. Passersby see and know it's INC.

The one above is the kapilya for what is actually now called the F. Manalo, Angeles locale congregation after being renamed after the man who started preaching the INC in the Philippines. Pampanga is the first ecclesiastical district (roughly equivalent to a Catholic diocese) although the first locale established was in Manila.

I don't know all of the locale congregations in Angeles and probably not all of them have concrete/permanent houses of worship. Some of them are at:

@Icarus: I'm curious about the architectural design of the INC churches. What is that design style and who was the architect who first designed the first INC church?

Does the detailing on the facade and the spires have any significance?

I think it's generally called neogothic but since that is a style that closely resembles gothic, some call the INC style, neo-neo gothic. I've read from the CCP encyclopedia that it should be called Filipino neogothic since nowhere else in the world is it found.

The first concrete chapel was designed by Rufino Antonio Sr. The product is the chapel along Washington (now Maceda) Manila. It was finished and dedicated in 1948.

Juan Nakpil (in collaboration with Carlos Santos-Viola) designed the old Central Office and chapel complex in 1952 but Carlos Santos-Viola designed most of the major chapels of the INC after that. The Cubao kapilya, considered the first which is distinctly what we now associate with the INC, is a Viola design. It was completed in 1954. The Central Temple dedicated in 1984 was also his design.

Here's info regarding Carlos Santos-Viola from the Wikipedia...

Carlos Antonio Santos-Viola (April 8, 1912 - July 31, 1994) was an architect in the Philippines. He is best known for designing and building churches for the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) religious group.

Carlos was born Carlos Santos-Viola y Antonio in San Miguel, Bulacan and one of six children to Melecio de Guzman Santos and Miguela Magpitang Antonio.

Starting from San Miguel Elementary School, Carlos moved on to the Ateneo de Manila to finish his high school education. While in Ateneo he joined the school band, and was quite active in basketball. Santos-Viola was one of the very first graduates of the College of Architecture of the University of Santo Tomas in 1935. During this time the professors then were outstanding architects and engineers of the period, such as Tomas Arguelles, Tomas Mapua, Juan F. Nakpil, Fernando Ocampo, and Andres Luna de San Pedro.

Santos-Viola worked in the office of Juan Nakpil after graduating. There he met Juan's youngest sister, Caridad, his future wife and mother to his children: Rosario, Milagros, Paz, Lourdes and Carlos Jr.

Shortly after World War II, he decided to open his own office in partnership with Alfredo J. Luz. In 1955, both parted ways and practiced separately.

His first exposure to the INC group was executed under Nakpil's company through the Bishop's Palace in San Juan, Manila. INC gave the subsequent project directly to Santos-Viola. Although common elements may be visible, his designs were distinct from one another. Each structure was created on functionality that was built with integrity, adorned with 20th Century geometric forms garnished with Gothic revival and Baroque lines. Among those completed designs was the INC's central office in Quezon City. Architect Santos-Viola was the first and only Filipino Architect who designed churches that were built all over the Philippines.

Carlos was a lifelong devout Roman Catholic. He ministered for the Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Quezon City and was frequently invited to join the INC but repeatedly denied the invitations due to ideological differences. He also taught architecture at the college where he graduated, and helped found the Philippine Institute of Architects in 1938.

Regarding your question about symbolism in the details... the ornamentation is non-representational though I've read from a commentary from a non-member that the gothic arches are symbolic of "pointing the soul heavenward".

Is it not also the same reason as to muslims? They only use geometrical patterns and avoid using human or animal symbols.

Yes it's similar but I think in Islam the symbols have meanings.

Images per se aren't forbidden in the INC. The INC doesn't use images for the use of worship. Kneeling, bowing down before images, and praying to images are the acts prohibited. The members congregate inside the building to worship God in spirit.

World’s tallest religious statue blessed in CdO (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20080814132525.html)

CAGAYAN DE ORO — The tallest religious statue in the world, the 50 feet statue of the Divine Mercy, will be turned over in festive celebration to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro by the Divine Mercy Foundation Mindanao (Philippines) Inc. headed by Atty. Guerrero Adaza and his wife Paquita Adaza.

The blessing of the statue, its turn over and the observance of the Virgin Mary’s birthday will be the highlights on September 8. The event will be preceded by a three-day symposium marking the 75th jubilee celebration of the Diocese of Cagayan de Oro.

An early dawn mass, preceded by vigil prayers, will be celebrated by Most Rev. Antonio Ledesma, Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro with Archbishop Jesus Tuquib. Most Rev. Orlando Quevedo, Archbishop of Cotabato, will be the homilist.

The statue was designed by Arch. Felino Palafox Jr. and sculpted by Nick Reyes, renowned sculptor and artist.

The occasion will be festive with the entrance of Knights of Columbus, Mindanao Core group, the shower of petals and confetti and street dancing. Pilgrims and visitors from the US, Poland, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Also the Marians of the Immaculate Conception Fathers from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, USA who will be the administrator and custodian of the statue and church.

Adams Express Travel has packaged a trip leaving September 6 with a visit to Camiguin Island Del Monte and Cagayan de Oro sites.

.......Only 50 feet??? I don't think that would make it the tallest religious statue in the world. If I recall correctly Christ the Redeemer (Cristo o Redentor) statue in Rio de Janeiro stand 38 meters tall (120 feet).

http://www.dondeviajar.es/files/2008/03/cristo-redentor.jpg

Of course, leave it to the Philippine press in sensationalizing everything Filipino and not even verifying their statements. Par for the course when it comes to any report from the Philippine media.
