bukid August 17th, 2009, 02:11 PM seems like those iglesia churches outside the philippines looks more diverse than those built in the philippines. some dont even have those steeples and spires.
it would be much more interesting if we see more of those churches. the one in south africa looks nice. simple but nice, the color is not monotonous too.
icarusrising August 18th, 2009, 07:05 PM Many of them are acquired properties. They are usually remodeled to suit the INC needs and requirements for worship. Some of them may be considered historical to the Church or are heritage structures in their locality. That one in King William's Town, South Africa if I'm not mistaken is already hundreds of years old. The general aspiration, however, is to have worship buildings akin to those found in the Philippines.

habagatcentral1 August 29th, 2009, 02:03 PM Interesting story... parang sa Malacanang Palace... It used to face the Pasig or at least treat the Pasig as its main entry point.
Same fate with that of Passi City Church...the back is now the main gateway.
icarusrising August 29th, 2009, 02:48 PM ^^ So what's the reason for the change- the shift of preeminence to the road from the body of water?

icarusrising October 9th, 2009, 01:31 PM Hm, I'm not sure but consider this... Taal Church at 96 meters long by 45 meters wide would have 4,320 square meters floor area. The INC Central Temple has 16,000 + square meters total floor area.

zoroethgenre_003 November 7th, 2009, 04:50 AM ^^ Molo Church is located in Molo district, Iloilo City (not the province) , though its one of the most photographed church but it aint the largest i think... for me, maybe Jaro Cathedral (seat of Archdiocese in the region) in Jaro district for the city, cant confirm on it though... for the province, maybe Cabatuan church, still cant confirm on it though
your first statement is quiet inconsistent..because, a claim that, Molo Church is not located in Iloilo Province but rather in Iloilo City is technically not right. Iloilo City is still under Iloilo Province though.

OtAkAw November 8th, 2009, 10:05 AM i cant think of any Christian Church in Asia that can surpass INC Central Temple's size..
The Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours in Thrissur, Kerala, India is the largest Christian Church in Asia at 25,000 square meters. I'm actually surprised that the world's fourth largest Catholic nation (our Philippines) is not home to the largest Catholic church in this part of the world.

Animo November 9th, 2009, 06:25 AM by: REV. FR. ROMAN C. SAGUN. JR. (http://www.negroschronicle.com/?p=6880)
Fifty years ago, this man of the cloth delivered an address at the inauguration of a fund campaign for the Cebu Cathedral Church. On May 17, 1959, Fr. Horacio de la Costa, SJ spoke to the Cebuanos: “It is hardly necessary to remind you of another reason for making your cathedral one of the finest in the Philippines.”
In the essay titled “Rebuilding the Cathedral of Cebu,” Fr. De la Costa made a clarification: “Here in our country the idea that the house of God is the responsibility of the entire community, the fruit of their combined labor, skill and sacrifice, was not only realized in practice but became a statute of the realm.
“It was an old law, dating back to the sixteenth century, that the construction of a church was financed by a three-way counterpart arrangement. One-third of the total cost was assumed by the government, one-third by the encomendero or local magnate, and onethird by the community. Since the government paid its share of the fund out of taxes and the encomendero out of tribute, it is clear the so called Spanish churches of our country are no less the product of popular faith and devotion than the churches of medieval Europe.
“And let it not be said that these massive structures were built by forced labor, and are monuments of tyranny and oppression rather than religion. The Filipinos who say this must have a very poor opinion indeed of their ancestors. Moreover, it is an entirely erroneous opinion.
“The weight of the evidence, overwhelmingly, is that in all but a few cases the building of our churches was a labor of love, willingly, nay gladly undertaken and carried to completion. If these churches are big and strong, beautiful and enduring, it is because our forefathers wanted them so; wanted them to be the visible expression of the biggest, the strongest, the most beautiful and enduring thing in the lives, their faith, their Catholic faith.”
Fr. De la Costa also commented: “Of the great cathedral of the Middle Ages, how many were the exclusive gift of king or baron? Not more than a handful. The rest came into being stone by stone, brick by brick, slowly but steadily, over a period lasting for years and even for decades, by the kind of communal effort which we were in the Philippines would call bayanihan, that is to say, the constructive cooperation of every member of the community, rich and poor, high and low, men, women, and children, each giving to the extent of his ability to further the joint enterprise.”
Among his other contributions to Philippine history was the book The Jesuits in the Philippines, 1581-1568. Published by the Harvard University Press in 1961, the book to this day remains a classic reference and a tribute to elegant writing.
As cited in this column on October 12, 2008, Fr. Horacio de la Costa, SJ was awarded an honorary doctorate by Dumaguete’s Silliman University some four decades ago.

Igsuonnimo November 22nd, 2009, 12:00 AM Pope and Anglican leader agree on closer relations (http://ph.news.yahoo.com/ap/20091121/twl-eu-vatican-anglicans-c8e2916.html)
By VICTOR L. SIMPSON,Associated Press Writer - Sunday, November 22
VATICAN CITY – After offering a home in his church to disaffected Anglicans, Pope Benedict XVI assured the archbishop of Canterbury on Saturday that he is still committed to seeking closer relations between Catholics and Anglicans.
Archbishop Rowan Williams said he came away convinced there was no "dawn raid" on his church by Rome, telling Vatican Radio he wishes "every blessing" for those who want to become Catholics.
Williams and Benedict met privately for 20 minutes in what the Vatican called "cordial discussions," as part of what has clearly been a difficult visit by the Anglican leader.
The Vatican said in a brief statement that the two leaders "turned to the challenges facing all Christian communities" and the need "to promote forms of collaboration and shared witness in facing these challenges."
Referring to the recent overture for traditional Anglicans upset over the ordination of women and gay bishops to become Catholics, the Vatican said the talks reiterated "the shared will to continue and to consolidate the ecumenical relationship between Catholics and Anglicans."
Williams' visit to Rome had been long planned but the Vatican overture to conservative Anglicans, for which he admittedly received little advance notice, cast a shadow over the trip and raised questions about the future of relations between Rome and the 77-million strong worldwide Anglican Communion, which includes the U.S. Episcopal c.Church.
In the interview after the papal audience with Vatican Radio, Williams acknowledged the handling of the Vatican move put Anglicans "in an awkward position for a time. Not the contents so much, as some of the messages that were given out. So I needed to share with the pope some of those concerns and I think they were expressed and heard in a very friendly spirit."
Williams said he came away assured that it "did not represent any change in the Vatican's attitude to the Anglican communion as such; and a very strong statement came out."
In a personal gesture, the Vatican said the pope presented the archbishop with a gold bishop's cross as a gift.
Since coming to Rome on Thursday, Williams has sought to downplay the implications of the Vatican's unprecedented invitation.
The Vatican says it was merely responding to the many Anglican requests to join the Catholic Church and has denied it was poaching converts in the Anglican pond.
But the move already has strained Catholic-Anglican relations and is sure to affect the worldwide Anglican Communion, which was already on the verge of schism over homosexuality and women's ordination before the Vatican intervened.
In a speech at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Williams was gracious in referring to the Vatican's new policy, which he called the "elephant in the room." The policy was an "imaginative pastoral response" to requests by some Anglicans but broke no new doctrinal ground, Williams said.
He spent the bulk of his speech describing the progress that had been achieved so far in decades of Vatican-Anglican ecumenical talks and questioning whether the outstanding issues were really all that great.
Anglicans split from Rome in 1534 when English King Henry VIII was refused a marriage annulment. For decades, the two churches have held theological discussions on trying to reunite, part of the Vatican's broader, long-term ecumenical effort to unify all Christians.
But differences remain and the ecumenical talks were going nowhere as divisions mounted between liberals and traditionalists within the Anglican Communion itself.
The new policy allows Anglicans to convert to Catholicism but retain many of their Anglican liturgical traditions, including married priests. The Vatican will create the equivalent of new dioceses, so-called personal ordinariates, for these former Anglicans to be headed by a former Anglican priest or bishop.
Estimates on the number of possible converts has ranged from a few hundred to thousands.
Williams _ the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion _ wasn't informed of the change until right before it was announced.
It remains to be seen how the new policy will affect Pope Benedict XVI's planned trip to Britain next year. Saturday's Vatican statement did not mention it.

gayon hay! garo kang penafrancia ang mga nakalinyang tao na mahadok ki Ina.
Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, Bikol's mother church. Main church of the Archdiocese; a.k.a. St John the Evangelist Parish.
"cathedral" from "cathedra", i.e., chair. the chair of the (Arch)bishop is found there.
all the large bells in its belfries date back to Spanish times, each inscribed with its name (in honor of a saint) and year of dedication.
Translaion:
Ganda! Mukhang nung Penafrancia (festival) ang mga nakalinyang tao na hahalik kay Ina.

Actually, the belfries are recent but was based on its pre-war predecessor. Somehow they got the accuracy of the old belfries.
The American troops bombed the belfries believing that these were Japanese sniper points. In WW2, nothing was sacred anyway.
It's a good thing that when they restored it after World War II, it remained as if nothing changed in its architecture.

BALAANONG BAHANDI: Sacred Treasures of the Archdiocese of Cebu
To mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Archdiocese of Cebu, the Cathedral Museum of Cebu and the Archdiocesan Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church will soon launch the book Balaanong Bahandi: Sacred Treasures of the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Published in collaboration with University of San Carlos Press, Balaanong Bahandi continues the pioneering work of Fr. Felipe Redondo who first chronicled the history of the Catholic Faith in Cebu through the book entitled “Breve reseña de lo que fue y de lo que es la Diócesis de Cebú en las Islas Filipinas” published in 1886.
With excerpts from a translation of Redondo’s magnum opus, over 1,000 full color photographs interspersed with vintage pictures in 58 chapters bring together the Church’s treasured heritage: houses of faith that have not only withstood the vagaries of time and the elements but spawned new parishes.
Balaanong Bahandi is the ultimate guide to the Archdiocese’s architectural heritage, showcasing all the churches in Cebu from the earliest missions to contemporary parishes, including all of the outstanding artistry they contain: bas reliefs expressed in coral stone, carved images in ivory and wood, ceiling paintings by the famed Canuto Avila and Raymundo Francia, handwritten pages in canonical books, bronze bells, and many other tangible manifestations of over 400 years of Christianity in Cebu.
There are just a few copies left. Do grab one now!

Yup, and its an expectation that would get concrete fulfillment for many years to come as the INC in the Philippines isn't even a hundred years old yet. It's an architectural style that it wants to be identified with so there would be little change to it "as to be expected". The Romans spread the same style throughout its empire for ages. America makes neoclassical its trademark in its civic buildings even up to now. There's a unifying element in what is called Thai architecture even when long periods of time separate the construction of the buildings say even within the Grand Palace Complex itself. Islam too has its own identifying style though there are variations in the individual structures throughout the centuries. In the Philippines, Catholic church structures embraced baroque for hundreds of years.
