Bacolod has been designated as the seat of the Philippine campus of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. The Philippine campus will enable the people of the Philippines and the Far East to avail of the theological and pastoral reflections on marriage and family that the Institute offers.

The Diocese of Bacolod has taken the initial step by setting up the John Paul II National Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. By God's grace, the John Paul II National Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family will assume the status Centro Associato. Too early for that, I think. The Diliman complex has only been around for four decades. Maybe the older one in San Juan. The chapel and office building complex completed in 1952 was designed by National Artist for Architecture, Juan Nakpil.

I am INC.. the seating capacity of this Church are approximately 3000 persons.. Try to go there! you will see if I'm mistaken, if you are seriously curious?

The May-June 1986 Pasugo has this info...

Simultaneous with the building of the F. Manalo house of worship in San Juan was the construction of another major edifice in Caloocan City. Built on a 2000-square-meter lot along Mabini Street, the spread-eagle-shaped house of worship can seat some 1,000 worshippers at a time. The building was dedicated to God in July 1952.

It's the third concrete house of worship built by the Church. I've attended a worship service there when the seats were still individualized (like those found in movie houses). It can probably seat more now. The glassy structures on the left and right side of the facade house stairs leading to the balcony. The ceiling is a parabolic shell. The left and right side of the main nave also sport a covered terrace which was peculiar for chapels built during that time.

I found this one.. This is a new chapel that will be dedicated soon. What makes this one interesting is the location of the chapel which stands in the center of the Manila City Jail.

No need to be disappointed because I'm slowly cleaning up the thread. It's better to discuss a separate INC topic because you can talk specific topics in regards to your congregation. Also, this is an architecture forum so it's much better to have separate threads to further explore and learn about INC churches.

If we have more contributors for mosque or other smaller temples then we could have another thread open for it. But for now I'm slowing cleaning it up.

Firstly, I created the original thread back in 2007 but it was renamed by some moderator around 2 years ago. It was originally about Spanish churches in the Philippines since we talked about architecture and history about various colonial churches. You can even go back to the very beginning of this thread in which I am trying to clean and transfer.

Secondly, I'm not sure if you remember but a few folks have actually complained about too much INC in this thread (prior my renaming). It was even discussed here even before I became a moderator. It's rather very confusing and tiring seeing INC churches when someone is trying to talk about a colonial churches history or architecture. I even had given up posting on it because of that reason as well. No offense but it got boring seeing similar INC architecture all the time. It's just not visually appealing after seeing 20 photos or more of a similar church.

Thirdly, I am not opposed of having another thread for other smaller temples or mosque but we hardly have any contributors for those until we have more posters interested in other religious structures.

How is it a segregationist attitude when I am barely even starting my intention of having specific threads that will be easier to post informations and discussions of specific topics? We only give malice if we think about it.

To be clear, I didn't say that you have a segragationist attitude but rather that this act categorizing or putting more specific labels into different threads could be miscontrued as such. Let's say I'm Rizalista, I'd probably be discouraged to post if the threads are specific. Having a "general" thread is more democratic.

Secondly, I'm not sure if you remember but a few folks have actually complained about too much INC in this thread (prior my renaming). It was even discussed here even before I became a moderator. It's rather very confusing and tiring seeing INC churches when someone is trying to talk about a colonial churches history or architecture. I even had given up posting on it because of that reason as well. No offense but it got boring seeing similar INC architecture all the time. It's just not visually appealing after seeing 20 photos or more of a similar church.

Welcome back, bro. Bongskie. I haven't been going around much these days but I do know F. Manalo (designed in the '50s like an art deco theater), Valenzuela, Evangelista, Pembo, Batasan Hills, Better Living , Luzon, Manggahan (QC), New Era (new locale within the Central Compound), Martan, and probably Pilot. I suppose the new houses of worship being constructed within the Metro Manila districts are designed to be fully airconditioned and that older ones would follow suit simultaneous to their refurbishment schedules. Currently under construction or soon to break ground are- Payatas, Bagong Ilog (Pasig), Commonwealth, Fairview, and Capitol.

Chapels built in the '70s were more angular and there were less ornaments inside and out so they appear more "masculine" for me. Vertical lines were used extensively to break space. This particular chapel doesn't feature a balcony but makes it up by having wings on the sides so it has a cross-shaped floor plan.

CHALLENGE. The Manila Arena will be the world’s largest indoor arena. It has been commissioned by Iglesia Ni Cristo (the Church of Christ) to be completed in time for the Church’s Centennial Celebration in 2014.

The building’s capacity is its challenge. Situated on a green field site north of Manila, at Ciudad de Victoria, the arena has been master planned to enable 50,000 people to gather inside the building and a further 50,000 to gather at a ‘live site’ outside to share in major events.

This vast scale creates technical challenges, especially as it is a one- sided bowl. It is difficult to have 50,000 people with one focal point, give everyone a good view and create a sense of atmosphere. The tight compact bowl shape helps achieve this with its saddle bowl form, high in the centre and dropping at the flanks. Strategically placed video boards also help with atmosphere and provide additional viewing.

Another challenge is to retain intimacy and make sure the arena never feels empty. The lower bowl will be the most frequently used part of the building and the design allows for easy separation of the lower bowl from the upper tier, by curtaining with acoustic and thermal properties. The building has also been designed to cope with large numbers arriving for an event simultaneously. People will be redirected immediately they enter the front door to avoid major circulation build ups.

Consideration also had to be given to making certain the arena would be comfortable. 50,000 people in a fully enclosed building is a large crowd, and combined with Manila’s humid, tropical climate meant that special measures have been undertaken to ensure the arena is adequately ventilated. The arena is fully air-conditioned, and the required plant space had major effect on the floor planning.

INNOVATION. The building’s capacity pushes the boundary of Arena design. The form uses geometry to create an elegant appearance while also giving the venue a powerful presence within its setting. Innovative solutions to the technical challenges of size and scale have also moved arena design forward.

The arena will not only hold major church gatherings, it will also operate as a multi-use sports and concert venue, capable of holding a range of events from boxing and basketball to live music performances. There are clear sightlines from every seat on each tier, even for various arena configurations such as church ceremonies, boxing, tennis, concerts or indoor gymnastics.

The overall vision of the masterplan will eventually see inclusion of shopping centres, a hospital and large scale residential developments.

IMPACT. The new Manila Arena is being described as a “phenomenal structure” and although construction is still ongoing, the project has generated worldwide interest. It will be an imposing building on a large site. But it has been carefully designed and engineered to specifically accommodate the challenges of its size and scale as well as the particularities of its site.

The modern house of worship was built a stone's throw away from the old chapel which now serves as a museum. The site of the new chapel is the very same spot where brother FYM preached the INC to the workers of Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company in the early part of the 20th Century. The main street of Isla de Punta is now named in remembrance of the man who started the work of preaching the INC in Las Islas Filipinas.

‘Scenic’s’ future shrouded in mystery ‘Church not divulging plans for the property’

SCENIC, South Dakota, Oct 9, (AP): The saloon is long empty. The roadside jail cells, rusted and worn. Even the swing sets peek from behind knee-high brush after decades of neglect. This tiny exclave just west of South Dakota’s badlands is officially an old ghost town. But its future is shrouded in new mystery.
“We don’t know what’s coming,” said Kathy Jobgen, 50, the only employee remaining at the only business still in town: the US Post Office. The town of Scenic — once a popular stop for people traveling to Rapid City from the badlands to the east or Pine Ridge Reservation to the south — was recently purchased by an unusual buyer for less than $800,000. The Iglesia ni Cristo church, established in the Philippines in 1914, bought the town and surrounding acreage from longtime resident and area rodeo legend Twila Merrill, who had gathered the land bit by bit over several decades. The church isn’t divulging its plans for the property. A person answering the phone at its offices in Daly City, California, said he couldn’t share any information, as did staffers of church spokesman Bienvenido Santos.

“They’ve got a non-disclosure agreement, and I’m a signatory to that,” said David Olsen, the real-estate agent who represented Merrill’s family in the sale.
He was only comfortable offering bits of detail — the saloon and other boarded-up buildings still standing along Main Street will stay, he said — but he said he couldn’t give specifics.
“The gas station will be open for business again soon enough,” said Olsen, of Coldwell Banker in Rapid City. The church purchasers are “interested in it being a benefit to the community.”
The church, which translates in the language Tagalog to Church of Christ, has been steadily spreading west since it was founded in the Philippines by Felix Manalo, a former minister of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church who experienced what he claimed to be a call similar to those of ancient prophets. He died in 1963.
Often described as one of the fastest-spreading international religions, its foothold in the Philippines grew from about 1.4 million followers in 1990 to 1.7 million in 2000, according to the 2011 figures released by the National Statistics Office in Manila.
Iglesia ni Cristo rejects the Christian doctrine of trinity and believes Christ is one of several prophets. The church is focused on the end times, believes Manalo is a prophet and considers the Catholic Church apostate.

It has a divisive reputation. The church’s backing has been viewed as crucial in Filipino presidential elections, and it has been accused of organizing bloc voting in that country. It also is known for its secrecy, rarely commenting on its activities.
So far, there has been no church activity in Scenic to hint at what’s to come — no construction permits have been sought or nor have any development plans been presented to the county. The lack of information surrounding the sale has some neighbors uneasy and rumors are circulating among the scattering of residents.
“They bought it sight unseen,” said Shirley Kudrna, whose father-in-law was born on a ranch about seven miles (11 kms) east of Scenic in 1916.
“Some people say maybe they’re a cult,” said her father-in-law, Tony Kudrna, 95, who has lived on the ranch nearly his whole life.
The church has expanded to more than 5,000 congregations in the Philippines, and more than 600 abroad in more than 60 countries and territories, according to the Manila Times. It has held neighborhood events to praise the hospitality of the communities where it has purchased land to build homes and churches, including Los Angeles, Orlando, and Union County, New Jersey.

Other congregations are established nationwide in more than 40 states, according to the church’s website. Dozens are listed in California, 10 in Washington state, 12 in Texas and seven in New York.
Jobgen said she’s hopeful the church will make for a good neighbor.
“I’m excited about the possibilities,” said Jobgen, who also runs the Jobgen Ranch with her husband.
The intersection of flourishing religion and foundering town is perplexing: In 1915, the state Highway 44 pit stop of Scenic enjoyed its largest population of 155 residents, according to records kept by the South Dakota State Historical Society.
At its peak, the town that’s pure Old West had two restaurants, three gas stations, two bulk filling stations, a hotel, a school, a bank and a post office. Tony Kudrna’s sister worked at one of the restaurants, he recalled. To travel from his homestead to the comparatively bustling town, he went by horse-drawn wagon.

The remnants still dot the 12 acres (five hectares) that qualify as deserted town. The buildings that remain are padlocked closed and have plywood over their windows and doors, but the flavor of the time is still very much present: The sign above the Longhorn Saloon is lined with aged cattle skulls and emblazoned with the structure’s year of construction — 1906.
The wooden general store is adorned with rusted wagon wheels and a carved sign that reads: “ashes to ashes — dust to dust— if we don’t have it — it isn’t a must.”
Merrill, a rancher and rodeo regular, began buying Scenic property in 1963. Olsen said her health began to fail about two years ago, and as cancer took hold, Merrill was forced to put the land — 46 acres (19 hectares) in total — on the market.
It languished for two years with a $3 million price tag. In July, Olsen stepped in and dropped the cost to $799,000.

Suddenly, prospective buyers stepped forward from all over the world, said Olsen, estimating that he took more than 500 phone calls and 200 emails about the property. He appeared on television programs in Australia, London, Montreal, Chicago and Atlanta, he said.
The offer from the Filipino church was one of several.
“It was Twila’s decision as to who she chose,” Olsen said. “She seems to be real happy with it.”
What happens next is not known publicly. Olsen said the property will be cleaned of dilapidated buildings and overgrown brush, but he said the buildings at the town’s heart will remain. Not even Merrill and her family know more than that, he said.
“They do not know the plans,” he said. “They’re as eager as everybody else.”

It's been posted here already. Carmen Locale of Misamis Oriental District is within Cagayan de Oro City. I'm happy for the brethren there considering that CDO is still recovering from the devastation of Sendong. The new house of worship would provide moral boost and more importantly be a place of spiritual refuge for them.

The best time to shoot Makati (Palanan) chapel is in the afternoon. The facade won't be illuminated by the sun though because of the North-South orientation of the chapel.

Rylands Hall, Stretford has been bought by Iglesia ni Cristo the worldwide Church of Christ, which plans to return the building to its original use as a church with spiritual study centre, residential accommodation and ancillary offices.

In the Philippines, the Church, as a rule, doesn't convert existing buildings into worship edifices as it prefers to build them from the ground up but I know of one that was. This one's an old US Navy Building in Capas, Tarlac...

How do you determine the exterior color or paint of the church / building? I noticed that some are light blue, light yellow, etc? THanks

^^ I don't work for the INCECD but I believe there are predetermined color schemes approved by the Central Office of which to choose from. It is also through the INCECD that new paint hues/formulas are introduced. There are experts on these matters that give advise to the district/locale leadership.

^^Yes,I remember that the old chapel has only 1 side spire.I don't know if that was due to unfinished work or just due to its space limitation.The old chapel also used to be the district office prior to its transfer at Sevilla San Fernando.

Hey Icarus,i wonder why Pasugo magazine dont publish anymore pics of our beautiful chapel at their back pages? I used to collect it.Its a good medium also to have a better appreciation of people we invite,seeing that chapels are well beautifully erected and maintained in our church...

Same with Pasig City Locale for having Wings Facade which is also Metro Manila East's District Office, but the Difference is Color Schemes and indeed interiors.

But the Question: Are Both Chapels designed same by Arch. Boying Santos-Viola or they are both Products of INCCED during Early 1970s??

I'm not sure if this is comprehensive but Iloilo is Santos-Viola's design according to this list (http://architectcarlosasantos-viola.blogspot.com/). The chapel's at the corner of Rizal and Mabini Streets.

The other chapel designed very similarly by Santos-Viola is San Jose, Nueva Ecija which underwent a massive renovation recently...
