View Full Version : Dream Stadiums
Marckymarc February 28th, 2010, 03:55 AM I've designed and built several scale model stadiums of my own design over the last few years. I craft these "Dream stadiums" mostly out of wood and do everything by hand with small tools. All of these models are built to a scale of 1:600.
My current project is an Art Deco 32,000-seater baseball stadium which I hope to complete by this summer.

Very, very cool hobby. Sure it must take a ton of patience.

This guy put's down tons of work on these but you call them "shitty"?
You're mother must be so proud... :ohno:
krudmonk March 1st, 2010, 08:26 AM I think he was calling baseball shitty, but still....
IHaveNoLegs March 1st, 2010, 09:19 AM wow incredible work. maybe you should consider selling them

:ohno::stupid:
Livno80101 March 1st, 2010, 03:51 PM I said baseball is shitty game and that I dont like baseball stadiums... but I also said that this work here is great, really impressive, "great job" - in my post... and for one comment - yeah, my mum is proud at me
Frizza March 2nd, 2010, 09:55 AM Fantastic work.
May I ask how you managed to create the seating?
IHaveNoLegs March 2nd, 2010, 09:18 PM baseball stadiums are probably the best to make anyway since because they have that more open end it is easier to see inside, in a model of something old trafford you would barely be able to see in interior of the stadium

Or Cowboys Stadium. :)
Marckymarc March 8th, 2010, 06:45 AM Impressive!!!!
How many hours do you need in average for one stadium?
Hard to say exactly. They average around 3 to 4 months doing them in my spare time. Maybe 150 hours I'm guesstimating.

Problem is I feel about soccer about the same as you feel about baseball
Maybe someday if someone commissions me for one--$$$ is a great incentive.

good answer ... that was my point, that I dont like baseball... some people here attacked me as I disliked your work :ohno:
tell me about material you use, as I cant see clear what sorts of material(s) is used here?

Yeah, it was obvious to me you weren't dissing my work. Thanks. :)
I've used different materials for different models (trying new things to see what works best) and found they all have their own advantages.
For the main supports I've tried Gatorfoam (wood-laminated foam), Memory foam core, and corrugated cardboard. They all work well.
For the seating decks and seating sections I always use 1/16" basswood.
For everything else I mostly use a combination of basswood, Gatorfoam and memory foam core. I try to use basswood for everything I can except where it's not practical.
The landscaping--playing field, grass, bushes and trees--are all model railroad hobby materials.
Marckymarc March 9th, 2010, 09:16 PM How much do they cost you to make?
Materials usually run under $100 per model.
cormiermax March 10th, 2010, 05:34 AM Would you build requested stadiums if you where payed for it?

PM me regarding those kind of questions. I'm not here trying to solicit--only to show my work. :)
kazetuner March 11th, 2010, 01:11 AM Beautiful work, I'm a stadium enthusiast and I always wanted to do something like this...and I agree, some football stadiums wouldn't do you no harm ;)
masterpaul March 11th, 2010, 08:02 PM How do you build these?
A quick tutorial ? :-)
Mr. Fitz March 14th, 2010, 01:06 AM These are FANTASTIC. Have you made football ones?

Marckymarc March 17th, 2010, 03:51 AM How do you build these?
A quick tutorial ? :-)
There isn't really a "quick" tutorial I could describe to you. My advise would be to start the same way I started--drawing lots of designs on paper. The way I started actually building them was to start out trying to build a simple straight section of 3 tiers cut out of corrugated cardboard using 2 or 3 supports made from a template. When that worked I tried connecting 2 angled sections...that led to a simple cardboard stadium, and from there...
If you want to try building one just try fooling around with cardbaord for awhile and see what happens. If you get good at those then the switch to wood isn't really all that difficult.
I made many, many cardboard stadiums--making mistakes and perfecting techniques along the way--before I ever even thought about making one out of wood. I would advise the same to anyone.

bd popeye August 7th, 2010, 07:19 PM Marckymarc, You sir are an outstanding artist with an excellent flare for design. Please post more photos if you have them!
OUTSTANDING work..simply OUTSTANDING!
Marckymarc September 14th, 2010, 09:14 AM Well after a long layoff I started a new project yesterday--a replica of New Yankee Stadium. This will be my first attempt at an exact replica so I'm sure some new challenges await me with this one. This one will also be the first time I'm deviating from my standard 1:600 scale--going slightly larger with a 1:540 scale for a bit more detail while still keeping the 24" x 24" base. I spent today creating the field template and making most of the main seating bowl supports.
I'll try and update with photos as I progress. Wish me luck!
bd popeye September 14th, 2010, 02:16 PM ^^ Thanks Mark!
By the way I think you Wilshire ballpark is the best design concept I've ever seen. I can just see that stadium in the Wilshire district of LA..sweet.. but no where to park..
I hope you have a chance to build more of your own designs..
