Lagos Airport terminal 1 building will beat expectations
Posted to the Web: May 26, 2006
Chairman of Bi-Courtney Consortium, builders of Lagos Airport terminal 1 edifice, Dr. Wale Babalakin, has boasted the project would beat the expectation of the people as it will be one of the world’s most modern airports.
Bi-Courtney Consortium got the Federal Government’s nod to provide the facility on build, own and transfer basis following the failure of the former builders, Sanderton, to deliver.
According to Dr. Babalakin, the project will very well serve to prepare Lagos and Nigeria for the hub the country had been aspiring to be. “The new five star hotel which is attached to the airport is designed as an extremely comfortable accommodation. Its aesthetics are unique and the entire ambience is a showpiece of modern architecture.
A paramount consideration of the hotel is security. The entire project focuses considerably on security.
The terminal building is to be linked with the hotel by an overhead bridge to ensure there is no hindrance to smooth flow of traffic.
The hotel is also coming with such facilities as a big casino, banquet halls, restaurants and a spa, swimming pool, a shopping mall as well as airline lounges.
Government’s position on the capacity of the airport terminal project to put Nigeria in the stead for hub status is not different, as Aviation Minister, Prof. Babalola Borishade, had said at the foundation-laying ceremony of the hotel last year, that the terminal building and accompanying hotel would be a spectacle.
He said the project represented government’s avowed determination to divest from areas of investment for which the private sector enjoys economies of scale.
Borishade said the project should gladden the hearts of well-meaning Nigerians because, according to him, “it lends further credence to the belief of the Federal Government that the private sector should play a prominent role in the provision of services and infrastructure that drive the wheel of the economy.”
The new terminal building is also coming with features as a huge shopping mall with a large Duty Free area, banking halls, medical facilities, offices, ultra-modern car park with a capacity for 2000 cars at a time, walkways, an indoor waterfall, a lot of marble, connecting bridges, pillars, vast lounges, post office and conveyor belts. It will have 10 aerobridges, too.

N26bn spent on domestic terminal of MMA, says Babalakin
By Kenneth Ehigiator
Posted to the Web: Friday, July 07, 2006
CHAIRMAN of Bi-Courtney Consortium Limited, Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN), said yesterday that the company has so far spent well over N26 billion ($200 million) on the burnt domestic terminal one building of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Bi-Courtney Consortium, parent company of Stabilini Visinoni, is the contractor handling the project on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.
Dr. Babalakin told newsmen in Lagos that the project, which is more than 90% completed, would be commissioned by President Olusegun Obasanjo in a few weeks.
According to him, the company’s faith in Nigeria propelled it to get involved in the multi-billion naira project.
He said: "Our investment in this project so far is in excess of $200 million and the only way we can recoup the investment is to be allowed to manage it for a reasonable length of time.”
Dr. Babalakin who noted that the building was designed futuristically to accommodate 10 million passengers, said the period for which the company could manage the facility had not been spelt out, adding that it would be defined at the end of the construction.
He said the initial agreement on the project with regards to period of management would have to be reviewed because of the problem of inflation and other extraneous variables which had shot up the cost of materials since work on it started about three years ago.
“We have appointed KPMG to work this out for us and FAAN has also appointed a consultant to work out the number of years we could run the facility to enable us recoup our investment”, he said.
On sources of fund for the project, Dr. Babalakin said “we have so far relied on varied sources, including funds from Oceanic Bank Plc, sales of assets as well as contributions by its shareholders.”
He allayed fears of any conflict of interest between Bi-Courtney Consortium and FAAN concerning revenue generation from the project when completed

A Billion Dollar Theme Park Being Developed In Abuja, Nigeria
released on 05/23/06 at 22:10:39
Abuja, Nigeria (emergingminds.org) - Tourism in Africa and particularly in Nigeria is about to get a boost with the construction of an African History Theme Park in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
Heritage City otherwise known as the African Kingdoms and Empires Theme Parks and Resorts is designed to showcase Africa's rich history, enhanced with modern technology to produce a total experience in learning, entertainment and relaxation for tourists and visitors.
According to project planners--U.S.-Africa Technology Council, Inc based in Washington DC--the Heritage City Theme Park Project represents the best initiative to date to present all of Africa's diverse culture and history to tourists and visitors in one spot. That spot is a 25,000 acre site on the outskirts of Nigeria's Federal Capital City, Abuja, which has been earmarked by Nigerian authorities for the project and for other tourism related developments such as a wildlife park and safari, hotels, vacation homes, retail and movie theaters.
The park will feature the normal rides plus re-creations of ancient African Kingdoms and Empires such as Oyo, Egypt, Songhai, Nubia, Ashanti, Kanem Borno and the Kings and Queens who presided over them such as Queen Nefertiti, King Jaja of Opobo, Queen Amina, the great Zulu warrior, Shaka Zulu among others.
The project will also bring to life themes from African movies, festivals, legends and folklore. A preview of the master plan reveals for example, the Yemaya Water Park named after the ancient Yoruba legendary figure and the Iri-Ji Amphitheater whose design incorporates themes based on the New Yam Festival celebrated by the Igbos of eastern Nigeria.
There will be monuments honoring the heroes of the African Independence struggle and a showcase featuring scientific discoveries of the origins of human life in Africa.
The project is being financed jointly by Heritage City Parks Ltd, a Nigerian-based development company, and a consortium of international investors. The first phase of the theme park is expected to be complete in 2007. Well-known sources familiar with the project master plan describe it as bold and imaginative and could further impact the growth of tourism in the West-African sub-region.
You are to blame August 9th, 2006, 05:40 AM Landmark Abuja tower gien the greenlight.
August 03 2006 at 12:48AM
Abuja - The Nigerian government has given the green light to build a $400-million tower to act as a focal point for its capital city Abuja, a top official said on Wednesday.
The 42-storey tower will have a revolving restaurant at the top, and include a library of 200 000 books, a botanical garden, an aquarium and offices.
"Cities all over the world have cultural identity and so part of the things the president had wanted to do is to transform Abuja into a city that can compete with any other major city in the world," Information Minister Frank Nweke said after a cabinet meeting which approved the project.
"It is something every Nigerian will be proud of. It is going to be 160 metres high and have about 42 storeys. It will have a revolving restaurant at the top from where you have total view of Abuja."
The government of Africa's largest oil producer is flush with cash after five years of windfall oil revenues, but the majority of its 150 million people still live in poverty.
The government intends to fund 40 percent of the estimated 53 billion naira ($414-million) cost of the new building, dubbed the Millennium Tower, while the private sector and state governments are expected to foot the rest of the bill.
Abuja was a tiny village until the 1970s when the government decided to build a new city at the centre of the country, and it officially took over as the capital from Lagos in 1991.
Part of the financing for the tower was already included in the 2005 and 2006 budgets, and the project will take a little over two years to complete, Nweke said.

A new Airport complex has been built for the Shell Petroleum Development Company in Osubi just outside Warri in the South West of Nigeria. The Aircraft expected to land at this air terminal include the Dornier 328, the Dash-8 and Helicopters such as the Sikorsky S-61N.
The building was designed to meet the SPDC's aviation requirements for the next several years.
The 3800 square metre Terminal building accommodates:
* SPDC’s fixed wing services
* SPDC Helicopter services
* Third Party services
* Cafeteria
* Fire Station
* Air Traffic Control Tower
* Aviation Office
Our design response to the requirements of the Client was to create:
* A simple block with all passenger activities on one level.
* A well-defined airside-landside as well as arrival and departure areas.
The use of Brick cavity walls to reduce maintenance requirements
* Reduction of the building weight by using a high strength, low weight steel structure.
The building covers a total area of 3800 square meters, measuring approximately 120 by 32 meters. The departure lounges measure 7.2m by 17m.
Messrs. Julius Berger Plc carried out construction of this building as well as the extensive infrastructure developments. Completion was achieved late in 2000.This is the first major airport development to be embarked on in Nigeria in the last decade. Our firm has subsequently won technical bids from Shell to complete the final phase of the development. This includes complete architectural and engineering for Pilots accommodation, Aircraft Hangar and total infrastructure (road network and services).
Further to the above, we have designed a 3500 square metre Lagos Airport Terminal/Hangar facility for Mobil Producing at the Ikeja Airport. Construction is yet to commence.
* We also carried out the enlargement of the Terminal and Hangar facility for Bristow Helicopters at the Ikeja airport on a design and build basis.

Tbite August 23rd, 2006, 04:24 AM Work on Digital Village in Onitsha begins
From Chuks Collins, Awka
WORK on a Microsoft Digital Village has begun in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Governor Peter Obi told the visiting Anambra professionals in the Diaspora during a courtesy call in his office on Monday that the Digital Village was being undertaken in collaboration with Microsoft Corporation of America. It is conceived after the popular Silicon Valley.
According to him, the two water schemes in Onitsha, the Sakamori and the Greater Onitsha respectively, were also undergoing rehabilitation simultaneously while road construction around the state has been put on hold till the rains stop.
The visiting Igbo in the Diaspora from the state were invited by the governor after the national seminar attended by about 225 Nigerians in the Diaspora who brainstormed on the way forward for the nation. They were invited by President Olusegun Obasanjo to seek ways of assisting the nation.
Prof. Manny Aniebonam spoke on behalf of the team. He noted: "We have toured our dear state and have obtained first-hand conditions and situation reports of our markets that need cleaning and clearing, erosion sites that must be checked, dilapidated hospitals and schools, all of which need urgent rehabilitation".
Aniebonam said their greatest fears are the negative reports about the state, which were read regularly on the Internet, adding that this must change.
He also called for " The Diaspora Activities Desk" in the state's relevant ministry to co-ordinate and harmonise their inputs, enquiries and information/activities on a regular basis. The request was granted immediately by Governor Obi. The governor said the desk would be opened in his office within the next 14 days.
The citizens, who flew into the country from all parts of the world expressed joy in the confidence and resolve of Obi's administration to salvage the state. They stressed their interest to invest their time, money and other resources to see that the state regains its leadership position in the country.
Obi offered to resign along with his Commissioner for Environment if Onitsha in particular and the sanitation in the state did not change by December 2006. He decried the Diasporans as the best the nation/state had, hence they must be encouraged to come and invest their resources to help the nation move on.
He urged the Anambra State Association, an umbrella body of town unions and other groups of indigenes of the state in America, to emulate the visiting team and jettison taking sides in the Ngige-Obi debacle, "as the state is bigger than two of us".
Again, Obi extended the curfew in some cities in the state from July 31 to August 15, 2006. This, he noted, was to give room for proper restoration of peace and order.
Obi disclosed that cases of alleged high-handedness by some security operatives were being investigated and promised compensation for the victims.

The first class development is serviced by an armada of state of the art
facilities which have been generously put in place for the convenience and enjoyment of its occupants. There are two designated recreation areas each with its own collection of the necessary facilities comprising swimming pool, squash court, tennis court and gymnasium. The two passenger and goods lifts were supplied by Otis Elevators, one of the best names in the lifts business. Electricity does not blink here and to ensure this, has been put in place dedicated transformers and standby generators with automatic changeover which is sensitive to power cut and would switch on immediately. Adequate water supply is ensured with surface and overhead water storage tanks. An ultra modern sewage treatment plant attends to the sewage effluents. An efficient security system has been put in place to ensure safety of lives and property within the luxurious confines of the Towers and the premises. Fire hazard has no chance in the Towers because an efficient fire prevention and control system has been put in place to control the big investment. The landscape is alluring and enthralling, comprising luscious lawns, paved concrete grounds and lovely plants. The Towers are within the confines of a dwarf perimeter wall fence with security posts at low entrances. Ample car parking has been provided. What is more, a post sale/letting management structure has been put in place to manage the ultra modern facility and maintain its very high standard.

Tbite September 27th, 2006, 01:34 AM News on the Abuja Tower (Not the Millenium one)
Currently, the MATH Plaza Complex proposal is just that - a proposal. Attempts have been made to present it to private business entities at home - first in May and again in August 2006. Both attempts did not reach the highest decision making principals in both organizations. We are re-articulating our marketing approach and are yet to decide on the next direction.
zexyworm September 27th, 2006, 08:25 AM The MATH Tower rendering looks like it was a STAT structural design, a basic concrete frame.
In my opinion a project of this magnitude would draw on the best of creative architectural expression through a closed (by invitation) competition. A good example of this methadology is the GAZPROM Tower competition in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
I understand and appreciate what MATH Plaza wants to become and accomplish. I think it will be a much more sellable project once the visuals become exciting and world-acclaimed architects are behind the concept (from feasibility studies to supervision, in partnership with local consultants).
I'm an architect myself and would love to be involved in this city-transforming project. I've got some icost-saving and strategic deas of my own as to how to carry out the project, so e-mail me if you're interested! hani3000 @gmail.com

Igbos have low self esteem and they will lie to boost their self esteem. Their contribution to nation building is not significant since they spent most of Nigeria's forty years of independence chasing a break away from Nigeria!
Tbite October 10th, 2006, 08:24 AM Victoria Island
Another high quality Chagoury Group construction and civil engineering project with a combined plot area of 4,450 sq metres.
The first plot of 3,850 sq metres consists of 13 floors of residential space 12 floors of apartments and one for car parking. There are two flats per floor making this a highly sought after luxury residential development with ground floor parking substantial enough to cover all the requirements of the residents.
The office complex is again being developed over 13 floors covering a land area of 600 sq metres. There are two offices per floor and one floor for parking. This project meets the growing demand in Lagos for a high quality residential and working environment.
The people behind this project are the same constuctors behind the banana island project

Tbite October 10th, 2006, 08:31 AM Name: Ocean Parade Towers (14 Towers it is said)
City/Country: Lagos Nigeria
Location: on the new "Banana Island" Project
Floors: 11 F
Use: residential
Additional information:
Ocean Parade Towers on Banana Island is a major real estate development for clients undertaken by the Chagoury Group of companies. A series of 14 tower blocks overlooking a lagoon will form the basis of the development. Its strategic location gives 180 degree panoramic views to the lagoon. With facilities such as tennis courts, a health club, swimming pool and squash courts, and extensive gardens, Ocean Parade is set to provide a luxurious life style facility for its inhabitants. By designing and building a ring road around the complex, the Chagoury Group has ensured that the internal site remains traffic free and only accessible to pedestrians.
The first phase, planned to be delivered by May 2006. Among the marketing firms are: Messrs Ora Egbunike & Company, and Diya, Fatimilehin & Company. Already, construction work is in high gear and the finishing is superb: Walls are made of marble and sandcrete; floors are finished with marbles (in the sitting rooms) and tiles (in other rooms).
The first phase, which comprises seven blocks of the mega upscale housing project, is fast taking shape. Work on the first three blocks is more 80 percent completed. In fact, internal painting had commenced at the time of inspection for this report. The piling foundation work for the fourth block has started. The entire site is a beehive of activities. Under the first phase, 33 exquisite housing units will be produced.
Being showcased is a model fully furnished 4-bedroom apartment on the first floor. Luxury and security have certainly been taken to a new level. There are three entrances to the apartment, with two of the doors - hardcore wooden exterior bulletproof doors. Each bedroom is complemented with well-polished seamless, silent wall-to-wall imported wardrobe.
There is a control room, lobby and laundry. Two bedrooms are directly tilted towards the bluish ocean. There is a generous balcony for sit-outs. It consists of a combination of 4-bedroom and 3-bedroom flats. Each room is beautifully ensuite.
The finishing is first class with top grade tiles for floor, granite for stairs and marble wall on the ground floor. Doors are aluminium drawn Victorian drapes, while windows are aluminium sliding.
Atop each block of the 11-storey high-rise structure is a penthouse. Each block has 11 apartments. At the rear of each block are the servant’s quarters. The roof is flat-topped concrete. The ground floor is also designed for exclusive parking space of the penthouse residents. There are three lifts, one of which is the panoramic lift for the exclusive use of the penthouse residents.
Work has also gone far on the recreational facilities. The first phase has two swimming pools, gymnasium, lawn tennis and squash courts and clubhouse. Below the recreation complex is the arena for general parking.

Carver02 January 7th, 2007, 12:20 AM Abuja has been the capital of Nigeria for a while now, so why is the national assembly just being built. I would have expected it to be among the first building that were constructed.
The main assembly building was completed several years ago. The current project is the construction of office blocks for members of the legislature. BTW, the statue out front is called The Fist of Freedom.
The main assembly building was problematic in that the job was taken away from Julius Berger and given to a construction firm that was close to Sani Abacha called Chagoury (sp?). They did a haphazard job with it and left the building with faulty plumbing and a faulty roof that had to be later repaired.

Information
The study covered an integrated assessment of the Bar Beach erosion problem on Victoria Island, Lagos. It initially focused on the technical beach erosion problem and an assessment of the options for mitigating the problem. The preferred solution lends itself to the development of a Waterfront and Tourist Gateway, which provides additional amenities and economic development in the beachfront area and can partially fund the required beach protection works. Based on independent market research in Lagos, the concept was developed from an urban planning and architectural perspective and developed into a project proposal.
It includes provision for hotels and residential apartments, office park developments, a waterfront retail and entertainment centre, residential marina, private and public beaches and beachfront amenities. The study report has been presented to the Lagos Government after submission for peer review.
Construction is expected to start in March next year. Entech Consultants and Stauch Vorster Architects were the other members of the multi-disciplinary design team.

Unfortunately, I have no pictures. I will get some as some as I can!!
Tbite March 11th, 2007, 04:01 AM The quality of google earth's images differs around less populated ares and the more polpulated areas, due to the fact that some are satellite images and the others are aerial shots. If Google earth can improve on it's coverage and the quality of it's imagery on the African continent, it'll be good news, I mean I was looking at the quaklity of American and Australian imgaes and there is a big difference.
Ikoyi Hotel is still ongoing (although its design is horribly outdated), it will be managed by Sun International!...and as far as I know they will add a mall!
The design is pathetic, but it might just be the quality of the renders that misfavours it.

The good thing about this projects is that it is setting a standard that can hopefully be raised in the future:cheer2s:

Information:)
Rebecca Court, named after the owner’s mother has many good things going for it. With stunning beauty, sizzling opulence and sheer grandeur, it leaves its beholders in awed stupefaction. It is a real dream come true. If it were truly a woman as the name suggests, Nigeria would have another strong go at the Miss World title, after Agbani Darego. The lesson of Rebecca Court is that a good property would sell any day regardless of the rates slammed on it.
The estate is located in a very serene inspiring environment, on the dual carriageway that leads to Banana Island and can be easily accessed from Onikoyi or Turnbull Road in Ikoyi. It therefore situates on the corridor of old Ikoyi and Banana Island with the ambience of a natural setting overlooking the Lagoon.
Seated on a land expanse of 13000 square metres, the development offers 41 units of first class residential accommodation and comprises several house types. They basically include 3-bedroom and 4-bedroom penthouse and 4-bedroom super Penthouse. There are 14 No, 3-bedroom flats, 13 units of 4-bedroom flats, 4-bedroom maissonette, a unit of 2-bedroom Penthouse with four terraces and a unit of 4-bedroom super Penthouse on two levels with 6 terraces. Each apartment is attached with one room service quarter. The estate was promoted and put together by Messrs Exuma Ventures Limited. The layout plan is elaborate, spacious and well integrated. The estate roads are paved and provided with covered drains. There are two main gates to the complex both with security post. The apartments are contained in four main Block marked A, B, C and D. Three other Blocks serve various purposes including servants’ quarters, the Clubhouse and the Service Building. The apartment blocks are on five levels.
The assemblage of wonderful facilities is as it would be for a five star hotel. All flats are fully air-conditioned. Passenger lifts serve the apartment blocks. An ultra-video system has been put in place to maintain security of lives and property within and around the gate complex. Connection to Internet within the complex is automated. All the user does is to switch on a Laptop, a PC or such other facility, log on and is immediately linked to any website by wireless means.
Each apartment is provided with parking space for four cars. A satellite television and central music system have been installed for the enjoyment of the residents. To cater for their laundry, are a washer and dryer. The kitchen is inviting and fully fitted with luxury household accessories such as refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave oven, and cooker unit. To check disruption in power supply are two standby generators and a dedicated transformer for the exclusive use of the estate. The estate roads are paved with jogging rails for keep-fit buffs. A central sewage treatment plant serves the purpose of the estate. Streetlights provide illumination for the complex.
To provide sporting recreation for the estate residents are lawn tennis and squash courts. There is a swimming pool served with a clubhouse. Other facilities of this ilk provided in the complex include fitted gymnasium, steam bathroom, Gazebo/Cinema and massage room. The landscape is well planned, comprising proportionately set out paved grounds, luscious lawns and gardens. A service department of the development company now provides post disposal-management service on the complex.
The apartments were disposed off by lease for 2-3 years term with option of renewal thereafter. The rents were graduated for the categories of accommodation. It included $60,000.00 per annum rent tagged for the 3/4 bedroom apartment, $90,000.00 per annum for the 4-bedroom maisonette and $140,000.00 per annum for the 4-bedroom Super Penthouse.

complex mega-structure on two floors running through the site from the main shopping core. The complex is futher accentuated with centrally located core consisting of an office block on four floors. The Shopping Mall is a continious arcade of three departmentalised blocks specialing in broadly grouped market products. THe departments are interconnected horizontally through generous corridors and vertically through series of staircases strategically postioned to ease the discahrge of goods and movement of customers. Total shopping is acheieved under cover and shade devoid of chaos generally associated with shopping. Each unit faces a wide exterior corridor. The look is uniquely simple and complements commercial enterprise.

zexyworm April 14th, 2007, 08:12 AM Now that the people of Cross River State are electing a new Governor today, it's a good idea to look back at the achievments of this visionary administration: A solid foundation for a thriving tourism industry. Duke has created a destination, not just a wild retreat on the mountains but also a contemporary shopping + business oasis in the middle of the forest. For this he should be commended and perhaps given the chance in the next govt. to boost Nigeria's tourism industry (in capacity of tourism minister or head of NTDC?). I can't imagine what he will propose next but my guess is that it will be very, very exciting indeed. The only hurdle is the security situation especially in the Niger Delta and hopefully this will be resolved in due time.

Zexyworm, Donald Duke, my appreciation for him can´t be clad in words. He is the leader Nigeria and much of Africa is desperately yearning for. Let´s not forget that Cross Rivers is by far not the richest federal state of Nigeria, but one can see what can be realised if adequate policies are efficiently installed and arbitrary "laws" continously reduced:cheers: Moreover, he also invested heavily is social infrastructure.:) D.Duke is one of the few Nigerian that has a profound love for his motherland otherwise he wouldn´t have realised such grand projects and we all know the stiff ressitance he met when that particular project was proposed. He is a true politician , my only fear is who will follow next? :ohno: Will his successor be able to follow in his footprints or will he just be another of those satanic crooks , sorry I mean "politicians" that carelessly plunder state funds by inventing weird "ideologies" in order to send families or girlfriends on shopping sprees abroad? I d-e-t-e-s-t those kinds of politicians, they should all be hanged, stoned to death or put into gas chambers by the public!:bash: Nigeria no longer needs them!:)
Bond James Bond April 14th, 2007, 11:42 AM Y'know I wonder if you guys should start seperating out the cities in this thread. You easily have enough for Lagos and Abuja for them to have their own threads. Or at least an all-Nigeria thread.
:cheers:

The bad news: PDP's leading contendor for Cross River Governor is Mr. Liyel Imoke who served as a former minister of Power and Steel. The fact that Nigeria regressed in power production to under 3,500 Megawatt since this man was in charge of that ministry (from 7,000 Megawatt) paints a discouraging score card...
The good news: Imoke is a good friend (and confidant) of Donald Duke and has pledged to:
1) continue the great tourism initiatives in the state, and commitment to Tinapa's future development in particular.
2) continue to foster an enabling environment for investors (both local and foreign).
3) the guy pledged to come up with "new" and exciting projects for the state, building upon CRS's reforms and development initiatives.
If Imoke wins the local governor race (and my guess is that he will) he will have to prove himself by walking the talk. It's a very real possibility that Imoke could unintentionally sabotage Duke's legacy by being reckless (wrong public remarks, lack of hard work, too many useless foreign trips, etc.).
