Was looking for Brisbane train pictures and found this shot from 1993 of Roma Street. The State Law building on the right is half way through it's modernisation, I have never seen a picture of that before. If anyone else has anymore please add them.

the building is one of my favourites...... it has such a imposing structure and is totally different to any other designs in the city.

Yes, a successful makeover this one. Works well...In different light it appears very different colouring and the crown is often lit differently.

it was unusual that the make over started from the roof down. i remember seeing pix at the time. sure was a fugly before the make over! probably the best transformation in oz!

I remember watching the transformation of this tower.
"Gotham City" is definitely one of the highlights of Brisbane at night.

Some info I found on the cladding (advertising speak included) and a couple of pics:

Project Specifications:
HardiPanel™ Compressed Panels (9mm)

"HardiPanel™ Compressed Panels provided a cost effective and reliable solution to the complex cladding requirement for the rooftop plant room on the 25 storey State Law Tower in Brisbane", says Graham Meiklejohn, Project Architect for Conrad Gargett Pty Ltd.

"We consulted James Hardie early in the design process and together designed the framing, joint details and the best sequence of panel installation. This way we successfully achieved the unique and striking modeling of the rooftop feature by using standard fixing techniques.

"HardiPanel™ Compressed Panels were selected for their weather resistance and durability for the highly exposed position at the summit of this imposing building".

the original tower was a pale blue colour rising to 90m tall. Then a large white plant room took height to 110m. i suppose in mid 70;s it was 'cutting edge" architecture!.lol

About the time the transformation of the building was occurring I was talking to one of the BCC heritage architects who was lamenting the transformation. Basically the original alumininium cladding was considered a "classic" example of 70s materials and highrise architectural style.

She was not impressed when I burst out laughing :)

In the local Quest papers you may have receieved a Queensland week brochure booklet. On the font the state law building is getting its revamp and the finishing touches are going up on 111 George street! (bottom right corner on the front cover)

I saw that brochure. Great to know that the Queensland Government has such an up to date photo library!

Well spotted Danubis, I see the Prudential building (Brisbane Square site) was still in place then as well. A fine building and a bit of a loss to Brisbane, you would have thought by 1994 they wouldn't have been knocking down such good ones.

I wouldn't ever go to Sing Sing. I was with a group of friends there once. A friend forgot his mobile and went back, the staff said they didn't have it or haven't seen it. (There was no one else in there at the time). Minutes passed and a guy faked to get it off the counter, whereas you could see him getting it from his pocket.
Hui Hin at Annerley is much better.

As for Wow - that place is a mess, the layout is like designing on acid.
