This week, Tel Aviv will begin celebrations to mark its designation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as one of 24 new World Heritage Sites. Tel Aviv's "White City" architecture has been singled out for this honor.

The White City designation refers to Bauhaus-style homes and other buildings built from the early 1930s to the state's establishment. The 2003 UNESCO designation acknowledged that Tel Aviv's White City was the first urban area in which Bauhaus styles were followed - by the mid 1930s, Tel Aviv was the only city in the world being built under what is called the International Style.
Tel Aviv's White City is home to more buildings in the Bauhaus style than anywhere in the world.

The centerpiece of the upcoming events will be the official Declaration of World Heritage Site by Marco Barbosa, UNESCO Deputy Director General, Official ceremony and unveiling of Tel Aviv's World Heritage Site plaque at Tel Aviv City Hall on June 7, in front of the mayor of Tel Aviv, UNESCO officials and visiting foreign dignitaries.

But the special events will cover an entire week. The first day of celebrations will be called 'Schoolchildren in White,' in which elementary school students throughout Tel Aviv will wear white and their schoolday will be devoted to learning about their city's architectural heritage.

A special lighting installation will be erected along Rothschild Boulevard, the heart of the White City, showcasing the city's Modern architecture, and an outdoor photography exhibit of Bauhaus renovation process, showing buildings then and now. will be hung from trees along Hen Boulevard.

The first in a series of sidewalk markers along the perimeter of the White City will be unveiled.

During the week, an exhibit on urban planning and the evolution of Tel Aviv's architectural style will be held, along with an Architectural Conference with leading global architects will take place at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

The events will include a Bauhaus Party at the TLV club .

Finally, 'The White Regatta' will be held: a boat race for sailboats and yachts - from Jaffa to Herzliya.

I liked Bauhaus since the first day I saw the pics through the net, and I think I appreciate much more its beauty once I will be in Israel within few days.

So, is there anything else that I can see in Tel Aviv during my 7-day-vacation in Israel?

Ciao Tel Avivers :cheers1:

Is there anything you can see in Tel Aviv?! there is PLENTY you can see in Tel Aviv, I suggest you go through these threads over here or go to the Tel aviv city site for more information, moreover you can contact some of the Israeli forumers here which would love to help! I would happily do so myself! im just not online that often now that i work (and not living in Israel ATM either)
Some of the places are: Azriely center where you can also go all the way up to the 46th floor and have an amazing view of Tel aviv and the area, The old city of Jaffa which is beautiful especially on Saturdays morning, all the famous Tel Avivi streets as shenkin, nahalat binyamin or alenbi, you could go to one of the markets like mahane yehuda, visit the beach and many many more to do, im sure youll enjoy it there and WELCOME to Israel ;)

Sure there's plenty to do here, ROM mentioned great places, although I think he meant the "Carmel" market ("Shuck HaKarmel") and not "mahane yehuda" which is in Jerusalem ;) .

Other great places to visit :

"Levinski" Market ("Shuck Levinski") in the south of Tel-Aviv near "Florentine" neighborhood, which is mainly a spices market, the entire area around it is very rich and authentic .

If you're into museums there're a few good museums here, Like the Tel-Aviv museum of Art (you can check out the new Museum Tower u/c near buy :) ) and "Nahum Gutman" Museum in "Neve Tzedek" neighborhood, which is beautiful by itself, I recommend going for an evening walk there, and sit in a nice cafe.

You can visit "Disengoff Center" Mall, and then walk up the very interesting King George street to Shenkin, Shuk haKarmel and Nahalat binyamin . about "Nahalat binyamin" you better visit it on Tuesday or Friday morning when there's a big art fair there .

On Tuesday and Thursday from 14:00 until 22:00 and on Friday Morning there's also a nice little Antiques market in Disengoff square under the Fountain, there some nice thing there from the 60's and 70's and earlier and some Communist stuff from the former Soviet union .

There's also Rabin sq. where you can visit the place where Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated, it's close too "Iben Gavirol" street where there are plenty of nice restaurants, pubs and coffee shops .

I general, besides going to the beach and Jaffa, it's really nice just to walk the streets, it's always interesting and there are always thing to do, and everything is very close, you can get any where by foot .
Welcome to Israel .
