Tampa Bay preps for 2014 Super Bowl bid

Tampa Bay and Company and Visit St. Petersburg Clearwater are partnering to bid on the 2014 Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay is one of three finalists for the NFL championship game, along with New York City and Miami, said a release from VSPC.

Tampa Bay and Company is in the driver’s seat to develop the bid, and VSPC is helping any way it can, said D.T. Minich, director of tourism for Pinellas and VSPC executive director.

VSPC plans to send out contract requests to Pinellas area hotels within the week, Minich said.

Tampa Bay has hosted the Super Bowl four times, most recently on Feb. 1, 2009.

The NFL is expected to announce its decision in late spring.

It'll go to NYC. It's payola for a new stadium. Maybe 15% chance Tampa gets it. Miami has no chance for that season imo.

They don't do really cold weather Superbowls though... The new NY stadium doesn't have a roof. The Northern cities that have hosted before all had domes (Detroit and Minneapolis).

New York in February? No thanks.

Come 2012, Indianapolis will host the Super Bowl, but the Lucas Oil Stadium (and people make fun of Sun Life as a name) has a retractable roof. So it makes sense for Indianapolis to host it because it could be a inside or outside game.

If it comes to Tampa, I do hope we could work out a deal to host the Pro Bowl as well. I don't know why Miami had the oppurtunity, but it would be nice to aslo have the chance to have a week-long of hotel space filled up in the Tampa Bay area. Hell, we could even try for hosting the Pro-Bowl every 5 years or so, if it's worth questioning.

Found why NYC was choosen. My response, "Seriously, really seriously?".

The application was approved despite the stipulation that the Super Bowl host region have a minimum temperature of 50 degrees or a climate-controlled indoor stadium. The approval came with the understanding that the bid would be a unique, once-only circumstance "based on the opportunity to celebrate the new stadium and the great heritage and history of the NFL in the New York region."

How about next we play in London because slap my momma's ass it would just so awesome to play the NATIONAL Football League in London. So we'll risk giving it to NYC with the possibility of one of the snow storms we have seen this season hit NYC with 3 feet of snow and cancel the game for another week........MAKES SENSE! :bash:

The Pro Bowl used to be in Hawaii every year and was after the Superbowl. They changed it and from now on it's before the SB and in the host city. The next time the Superbowl is in Tampa the Pro Bowl will be too.

It goes back to Hawaii next year and 2012.

Hmm, could have sworn I heard it will be in the host city from now on. Guess not. It will at least be before the SB though.

Sure would be nice if Jax could host another Superbowl in 5 years or so, but I'm not sure if the Jags will still be around by then.

Sorry, but I'm not going to hold my breath on this one. We had 70 something, 2000, and 2009. I'd actually be surprised if we get 2014, but who knows! lol

^???

Tampa has previously hosted Super Bowl XVIII in '84, Super Bowl XXV in '91, and Super Bowl XXXV in '01 and Super Bowl XLIII in '09.

If for whatever reason the owners decide they just can't risk bad weather in NYC, then we'll get it. But I think the odds of that are slim.

Final biddings are in and all 3 mentioned are in. If NYC does get it, I hope it snows 7 feet and it bites them in the ass.

Interestingly we came quite close--Miami was out at the start but Tampa lasted until the fourth ballot.

I'm hoping that the city bids for the 2015 game. I'm highly suspective that Miami will again bid aswell for 2015 and we'll likely see more northern cities try to bid for the games with NYC being selected. But the whole reason NYC was picked was more of the "historical moment" of NYC hosted a Super Bowl and not really of anything that Tampa lacked.
