Training center gets Olympic council OK

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose "Peping" Cojuangco Jr. announced yesterday that the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has donated $50,000 (about P2.4 million) for a proposed sports training center that will be carved out inside the Cojuangco-owned Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac province.

"We are happy with this development. We will use this for our plans of putting up a feasible training area for athletes as they prepare for international competitions," said Cojuangco during the PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue.

Based on the plan, the sports complex will be patterned after the United States Olympic Committee’s training center in Colorado.

The training center will serve as a conditioning place for athletes who will compete in the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and the Olympics. Efforts to put up a correspondence school are also being considered.

Cojuangco, who was accompanied by POC secretary-general Steve Hontriveros, said he got the approval of the OCA officials during its Congress held last week in Kuwait.

Hontiveros said they expect the money to be transmitted within this month.

Aside from the one in Lusita, the POC is also considering Clark field in Pampanga as the alternate venue for the training center.

"We have already sent a communication to Clarkfield Development Authority chairman Ed Pamintuan and hopefully, we get good feedback," Cojuangco said.

Cojuangco explained that it is high time Filipino athletes must have a training center which is not only complete with high-end facilities but also away from any distraction and pollution.

The POC leadership may likely end up choosing Luisita since it has already an archery range and boxing gym.

The POC chief bared initial plans of sending the RP archery team to the hacienda for training.

Taytay, Rizal—- The local government is setting sight on the construction of a P200 million state of the art sports complex, which would replace the Marikina Sports Center that was earlier ceded by the Provincial Government of Rizal to Marikina City, where it is situated.

Mayor Joric Gacula said that they have in fact started expropriating some 13.6 hectares in Barangay Muzon where they intend to put up the modern day sports complex.

In acquiring titled properties for the venue of the sports complex, the local council earlier passed ordinance number 1 (series of 2009), which pertains to the legal expropriation procedure.

Gacula explained that the procedure on the acquisition of these properties was made possible with the help of the Provincial Government through Governor Jun Ynares III, who expressed willingness to dole out a counterpart fund to defray the cost of the proceedings.

Under the local government development plan, the sports center would be equipped with world standard facilities, which include an open athletic field (with elevated bleachers), Olympic size pools, covered basketball courts, among many other sports amenities.

The local chief executive explained that the sports complex, which would be at par with the global standards, would host various provincial sports activities, such as the Palarong Panlalawigan, the Governor’s Cup, the Palarong Pambansa, the STACAA, among others.

Gacula likewise cited Gov. Ynares III and Congressman Jack Duavit (1st District of Rizal), whom he described as consistently supporting their development programs, especially those that has something to do with youth empowerment and sports development. “ Gov. Ynares, Rep. Duavit and I share common sentiment on the government’s need to provide the youth with something which could help them do away with drugs and at the same time develop and hone their talents through various sports discipline of their choice,” Gacula noted.

ahmmm... parang pinagsama mo yung Great Britain at United Kingdom bago ka nag-translate? United Britain?

Nagkakaisa is indeed uniting but if you are to translate a country, ie the US or the UK, to Filipino, it's awkward for us to say Nagkaisang Estados or Nagkaisang Britanya. It somehow insinuates that the US and the UK have already united and that are not united anymore, so I think it should still be Nagkakaisang Estados or Nagkakaisang Britanya.

Sky Harbor

^^ No, because "great" in this context is by size, not prestige (which is the common use of dakila). In addition, the term in its entirety (Gran Britanya) was borrowed from Spanish and is in common use, in a similar vein to Estados Unidos.

Yup, I know that we hosted the event since the Philpost had a commemorative stamps issued for the 1954 Asian Games

:bash:Noon kakaunti pa lang ang tao kaya kasyang-kasya sa Rizal Memorial Stadium ang mga sectators ....

Dustin
February 8th, 2010, 09:39 AM
Hecky, if you (a city) want to play with the big boys (the New Yorks, Paris's, Londons, Rios of the world) and have Olympic rings in your eyes, you have to be very sure of your cards because it is NOT going to be cheap -- just to try to win the bid. It is very mahal!!

Consider: the first application fee, I believe is $150,000. If you are picked as a finalist, it goes up to $500,000.

The actual campaign costs. The U.S. Olympic Committee originally wanted its finalist cities for this 2016 round to have some $35 million as a warchest, based on what New York spent for its fruitless 2012 campaign. In this round, Chicago spent some $9.2 mil just for the DOMESTIC part of the campaign -- to best L.A. and be the US rep. Having spent that, it is budgeting an additional $40 mil for the final and international part of the campaign. Those finalists are all budgeting about that amount for the final phase.

For the Winter Games, with a far smaller pool of candidates, Sochi (Russia) was rumored to have spent $50 mil to beat South Korea (PyongChang) and Salzburg, Austria, to stage the 2014 Winter Games.

So I am not being "delikado" about past hosting experience that will go on your bid resume. You have to have solid credentials if you don't want to throw away $40-50 million just to be in the running!!

Even all the money in the world cannot buy a bid. Doha, Qatar, getting a much better technical score than Rio, was nonetheless cut off because:

(1) the time period it offered for the Games was outside the IOC's preferred time window;

(2) Doha's heat had something to do with it; and

(3) Doha -- and you know they can outspend China for the most state-of-the-art facilities -- could not guarantee a completely secure Games from those mga sira-ulong Arabos.

So, dreaming of winning and hosting a Games is the easy side of the equation. Actually going in there to compete against world-class cities with more temperate climates is another thing. Notice that no city in the world's equatorial belt has ever hosted an Olympic Games, Winter or Summer....

I think that is also the problem of Malaysia. The season in our part of the world doesnt match that of the Northern or Southern territory. Kasi dapat Summer Games sya diba?

Renovation of Rizal Memorial Sports Complex

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/7913/09boxing.jpg

The Philippine Sports Commission's repair/renovation of its several buildings and rooms is in full blast as most of them should be completed by May 30, 2010.Some venues like the stands facing the track oval are being fully refurbished and repainted (top picture). Second picture shows the new spanking clean, fully-lighted boxing ring, gleaming with blue canvass which pleasantly smells with fragrant air.(PNA photos by Marvie Lloren)

I wanna ask, why is it so hard to construct more basketball venues? Especially as a country that's so big on basketball?

I wish the PBA could be like the NBA and have each team be based in different cities.

Also, Araneta Center looks way too outdated.

But looking at all the stadiums in the US, I wonder why we don't have any money for sports infra.

The US. Airways Center (~18,000 capacity) home of the Phoenix Suns was built at the cost of $90 million.

Target Center (~20,000) home of the Minnesota Timberwolves was built at $104 million.

Can't they get private financing like the US does?

IMO..we have a lot of indoor stadium for basketball or any indoor event, what we need is a world class stadium. The one in Makati is quit good but small. T_T akala ko kung ano ang sinasabi nilang "World Class". :ohno:

@jpdm

ang gusto kong renovation na magawa nila dito e bukod yung facade sana magawan nila ng paraan yung roof.. gusto ko yung mala lyceum gen.trias ang dating ng roofing nito.. plus the bench gusto ko yung single chair lang parang sa araneta... the paint should be much darker but not tooooo dark.. tapos meron sanang foot bath para hindi madungis tignan diba?

Shakey's V-League at SkyGym

THE Gaisano Grand Citimall SkyGym will host the Mindanao Qualifying Round of the Shakey's V-League Girls Division on May 11 and 12.

Organizer Darren Evangelista yesterday said they will accommodate 12 teams and not eight teams as he earlier announced.

Click here for Election 2010 updates

"This tournament is an open registration for Davao Region teams. Since there are limited slots, we encourage teams to sign up as early as possible," he said.

He said the top eight players of the champion team will be joined by four other top players from runner-up team to compose the Mindanao team to the National Finals set May 19 and 20 in Tacloban City (Tacloban Astrodome).

The Mindanao team, according to him, will avail of an all-expense paid trip, hotel accommodation and meals.

The two-day event, which is sponsored by Shakey's Great Pizza, is sanctioned by Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) and organized by Evangelista Aquatics and Sports Management, Inc. (EASMI). (MLSA)

The Panaad Park and Stadium is one of the most modern sports complex in the Philippines and it is found in Bacolod City. This 25-hectare sports complex has been the site of the Mens’ Football Event of the 2005 SEA Games as well as the location of the qualifying tournament of the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship. The Panaad stadium is also the unofficial home of the country’s national football team. (Yet despite the Philippines having one of the oldest football teams, the country has still a long way to go before being able to appear in the World Cup, arguably the world’s second-largest sporting event after the Summer Olympics.)

Aside from the football field, the Panaad Stadium also has a rubberized track oval, a 15,500-seating-capacity stadium, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool, among other facilities. As for the “Park” portion of Panaad, scattered among the greenery are replicas of landmarks from 13 of Negros Occidental’s cities and municipalities. The annual Panaad sa Negros, which is a celebration of the festivals of each of the cities/towns of Negros Occidental, is held here in the Panaad Park and Stadium.

premature yata ang list mo since ang hosting ng sea games ay via bidding. i believe ang final ay 2013 sea games sa myanmar kasi nagpull out ang singapore na supposed to be the host for the said year kaya lang marami yatang international events na kasabay na sila din ang host.

POC plans bid for 2015 SEA Games

By June Navarro
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 04:49:00 06/04/2010

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Olympic Committee plans to bid for the 2015 Southeast Asian Games and hopefully duplicate its overall championship in the 2005 biennial meet in Manila.

POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. Thursday announced that the country will be fighting for the 2015 hosting rights with Vietnam and Brunei after the SEA Games Federation officially awarded the 2013 Games to Myanmar during a meeting in Jakarta on May 29.
Indonesia will host the 2011 games.

“I noticed that all countries are angling to host these games,” said Cojuangco. “In the next few months, the POC will be preparing an attractive proposal for its bid.”

Vietnam staged the games for the first time in 2003 while Brunei played host in 1999. Myanmar’s winning bid for 2013 left Cambodia and Timor Leste as the only countries which have yet to showcase the multi-sport event among the 11 nations.

Cojuangco said the timing for the 2015 hosting is just right since the Olympic body is closing in on the hosting of the 2014 Asian Beach Games.
The uncle of presumptive president-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said the POC will continue to pursue the construction of a state-of-the-art training center in Clark Field, Pampanga.

The Olympic Council of Asia donated $50,000 to the POC last year to begin the groundwork of the training center, where the entire national team will be housed.

Cojuangco said the OCA has pledged to help bankroll the training center.

that is one ultra modern cockpit for the bicolano sabungeros.!

in order for this venue to become viable and pay for itself, it must host concerts, sports events and conventions (or prayer meetings) at least 4x a month. Unless ASAP or SOP moved their productions here and the PBA make this their regular stop and play once a week, the only recurring event that can generate revenue for this venue is your local derby / pintakasi / tupad / sabong.

there is still a plan to add additional seats at the front row for VIP seats similar to that of the Araneta Coliseum. Looking at the pics there is still a big space capable of handling 1000 or more spectators.

today is the opening of the City Coliseum and will also the venue of the search for Ms. Bicolandia this September which includes Ms. Universe 4th runner-up up Venus Raj as part of the steering committee.

^ slap some renovation and modernization on that and it'll be great!

In fact its flooring has just been changed with imported wood tiles...But I wonder why the Provincial Government here would not want to spend for removable windows and airconditioning so it could be used for both occasions that require airconditioning or no airconditioning...Maybe maintenance cost and cost of holding an event here if this happens would increase drastically...I am quite satisfied with its ventilation system, though...

This sports complex, by the way, got an award for its design and architecture.

I observed that fiber glass panels (or malabo lang mata me :) ) are installed between benches as a device to separate the audience (upper box, lower box, etc.)

When PBA had road tour here in Naga last week in the newly built City Coliseum a chaotic scene transpired. When the teams arrived on the court everybody especially those seated at the upper box starts jumping from the one section to another thus, disrupting and creating confusions among the spectators.

The main culprit of such incident was blamed on the short or low level railings installed (see pic below)

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/9660/picture146picnik.jpg (http://img510.imageshack.us/i/picture146picnik.jpg/)

I'm sure installation of fiber glass panels is highly recommended on the Naga City Coliseum.

There is no fiber glass panel there, it just look like it has because there's really none:lol:...And no accident happened so far because the barrier is quite high and strong. As far as I can see with your pic, that barrier is quite low and quite encouraging for people to transfer from one side to another.

That's great! We have to be content with no AC for this sports center because other nearby venues here such as the NegOr Convention Center is fully AC. It seems the government here prefer no AC for this sports facilities. but I heard there was a plan before to convert this center into an AC/non AC convertible center.

I think the Naga Coliseum can still see some improvements in the coming days as it is still new...I am not sure though if they can better spend the money to be spent for AC to make its design better like improving ventilation and other modern equipment. I understand funding is a problem, just like we have here. We are still in a third world country anyway...:)

yup budget is the culprit :ohno:

That's why even the coliseum is not 100% finished, the City have already lined up events and other income generating projects just to compensate with lack of funds to alleviate the budget allotted for the AC of the dome.

so, saan na ang venue ng next sea games, ngayong may mga press releases pa about the poc's plan to bid for the 2015 sea games?

the best venue if ever our country will host the 2015 sea games will be NEGROS OCCIDENTAL they have a world class stadium PANAAD STADIUM and another stadium Paglaum Sports Complex for FOOTBALL matches

they have many sport coliseum l in NEGROS OCCIDENTAL like the VICTORIA CITY Sports and Amusement Center, UNIVERSITY OF ST LA SALLE GYM, WEST NEGROS GYM and many others

they will only need to build a TENNIS COMPLEX, VELODROME

renovate the AQUATIC CENTER in PANAAD STADIUM

the best venue if ever our country will host the 2015 sea games will be NEGROS OCCIDENTAL they have a world class stadium PANAAD STADIUM and another stadium Paglaum Sports Complex for FOOTBALL matches

they have many sport coliseum l in NEGROS OCCIDENTAL like the VICTORIA CITY Sports and Amusement Center, UNIVERSITY OF ST LA SALLE GYM, WEST NEGROS GYM and many others

they will only need to build a TENNIS COMPLEX, VELODROME

renovate the AQUATIC CENTER in PANAAD STADIUM

Be careful when you use the word "World Class"..i've been to 1st world stadiums and arenas before, the Panaad Stadium should better be at par with these if you say "World Class"

World Class Course at Pamplona Golf and Country Club

The town of Pamplona in Negros Oriental is located in the northwest portion of the province, 37.9 kilometers away from the provincial capital city that is Dumaguete City. The main industry being agriculture, many farming properties and plantations can be found in many regions of Pamplona.

One such property is the Pamplona Golf and Country Club which originally was a private owned plantation of coconuts, sugarcane and other agricultural produce. It was converted into an 18-hole golf course in the late 1990’s. Although this golf course is strategically located near the municipality of Tanjay, it is part of Pamplona’s jurisdiction and brings its name.

Mountain ridges provide for a panoramic view from the Pamplona Golf Course. The broad landscape is dotted with refreshing verdant greens. Because the terrain is naturally hilly, the course is a demanding and challenging feat even for seasoned golfers. The course includes small lakes and cascading streams and enhanced surroundings that make golfing there a worthwhile experience.

Pamplona Golf and Country Club has a world class course that is used for provincial and national tournaments holding at least three tournaments in one year. The greens and fairways are very well cut and maintained, so with the rest of the grounds. Day to day operations are taken cared of by a Manager, appointed by the Club’s Board of Directors and members.

The Clubhouse has a fully operational restaurant staff that serves meals, snacks and cold drinks. Other amenities include a swimming pool, a landing strip for private aircrafts, and a row of clean and functional resort quality rooms that can be leased. At the main clubhouse, there are lockers and shower rooms, a golf shop offering rentals (golf carts for P600/round, golf sets) and selling basic golf items like shoes, gloves, tees and balls. Caddies and umbrella girls are also around for a quick helping hand and on some occasions, a pro might also be there to give you some golfing tip or two.

SBC Kiteboard magazine contributor Craig Cunningham reports from the first ever Wind Or No Wind event at the Camsur Watersports Complex in the Philippines.

CWC (Camsur Watersports Complex) is the site for the first annual WONW (Wind or No Wind) event. Mauricio Abreu has put together this contest which will be like no other format before. The purpose of this event is to show the world what kiteboarding can be and that the top wakestyle riders in the world can throw down on the cable or a kite... doesn't really matter! Having the best full sized cable and a winch park with multiple System 2.0's here should help everyone progress quickly and push the level of kiteboarding to new standard!

A lot of the riders are already here and with the event starting on the 3'rd more will be rolling in shortly. Brandon Scheid and myself arrived this past weekend around the same time as James Boulding and Sam Light while Ruben Lenten, Aaron Hadlow and Tom Court were already here shredding! Morris and Moe showed up last night and scored a cable set under the lights! All in all this place is amazing, couldn't think of a better place to be and I think this event is going to really help show the world the potential of kiteboarding! Keep checking back to SBCkiteboard.com for more updates from WONW! The event kicks off tomorrow and this place is going to go off!

Update # 2

http://www.sbckiteboard.com/uploads/Image/2011%20Newswire/CWC-overview.jpg

Today was the last day for arrivals at WONW. Pretty much everybody has showed up by now, Dre, Sleezy, Joby, Stone, Norman JR and Jamie Barrow came in the night before and got a chance to take some laps under the lights! When we woke a lot of riders were already on the water and it started to go down early! The Rebulic step up was back in action and was getting sessioned hard! In the afternoon the media crew jumped in the Governor L Ray's Chopper and buzzed around for a while filming some double sets on the main cable! Hammers were going down everywhere, you wouldn't have thought the level was going to be this high before the event even started! Were going to see some crazy stuff come out of this event!

http://www.sbckiteboard.com/uploads/Image/2011%20Newswire/peanut-gallery.jpg

During the afternoon the wind came up and a bunch of us were getting ready to kite! But the wind never completely filled in, so after a few hours of waiting for wind we all headed back to go shred some cable... how sick is that? At around 5 o'clock we had a kicker session that continued until the lights came on and hammers were being layed down! Some highlights were Hadlow's Moby Dick, Tom Courts Crow Mobe, Brandon Scheid and Jamie Burrow had some mega 7's and Norman Jr was showing that he gets to ride a fair amount of cable dropping some crazy hits! A few of the pro wakeboarders are here, Kim Jong Ill is absolutely killin' it! He's super impressed with the level of riding from the "kiteboarders" and has already been asking about learning to kite!

http://www.sbckiteboard.com/uploads/Image/2011%20Newswire/LF-boys---Brandon--Morris---Craig.jpg

After the kicker set it was time for another meal cable side. Doesn't get much better having dinner watching people having a set on the top cable in the world! Everybody was pretty drained after the first day of the event but some of the boys went out for a wakeskate set. Dre, Stone and Morris we putting together some fun lines under the lights while a few others went over to the skatepark here at CWC and flowed through that for a bit. Sleezy was showing the locals his park skills, it always fun to watch Jason skate! After the the late night skate session and riding all day long things were winding down and we all headed back to our cabins... we were going to need all our energy for Day #1 of Wind Or No Wind board jam!

With condition, FIFA willing to upgrade PSC football field (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/297677/with-condition-fifa-willing-upgrade-psc-football-field)
By FRANCIS SANTIAGO
January 10, 2011, 7:29pm

MANILA, Philippines — With a 15,000 to 18,000 sitting capacity, the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City is the country’s only venue fit to host major international football tournaments.

If plans push through, there could be another one.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) said it is looking at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City as the other venue except that the place has to be upgraded to meet international standard especially in the matter of sitting capacity.

PFF president Mariano Araneta said to host at least Southeast Asian level tournament, a football stadium should accommodate at least 15,000.

The Philsports Arena falls short of that standard as it can accommodate only 10,000.

Araneta said the International Football Federation has offered to help the Philippines build another stadium that can meet international standard, but with one condition: The venue must be used exclusively for football.

In this regard, FIFA said that if Philippine sports officials can accept the condition, it was willing to give the football association as much as $500,000 (about P21.5 million) to realize the project.

Araneta said he will open talks with the Philippine Sports Commision regarding the proposal. The PSC operates the Philsports complex as well as the Rizal Memorial complex and some other venues.

“FIFA can only provide us that grant if ULTRA (fomer name of PhilSports) will be used exclusively for the football and not for other sports,” Araneta said yesterday. “So, for everything to happen we have to talk to the PSC about it.”

Araneta will meet PSC chairman Richie Garcia today when Garcia presides a meeting with the 41 heads of the national sports association.

Meanwhile, the Philippines will host the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifier next month against Mongolia.

The Azkals, hoping to follow up their amazing semifinal finish in the AFF Suzuki Cup last month, will play in the competition with a new coach in German Hans Michael Weiss.

Weiss, who coached Rwanda’s Under-17 side while serving as German Football Association's technical director, replaced Simon McMenemy.

Preparations roll on
By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE shell-clay court that will host the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group I match between the Philippines and Japan on March 4 to 6 in Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City is expected to be finished by the end of this month.

Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Harry Don Radaza, who is also the chairman of the committee on tourism and sports at the City Council told Sun.Star Cebu the contractor gave them the end of January target.

Greet your friends and families this Sinulog season. Sun.Star covers Sinulog 2011 live!

“Since the ITF (International Tennis Federation), which governs the Davis Cup, implemented a very strict rule when it comes to the condition of the playing courts, Plantation Bay hired a contractor that could meet the standards of the ITF. And its target is to finish at the end of the month,” said Radaza.

Aside from the courts, Radaza said the bleachers, which the city ordered from Manila, will arrive by the middle of February in time for the final inspection that will be conducted by the ITF.

Radaza also announced that team captain Cecil Mamiit and Treat Conrad Huey are a shoo-in to the Davis Cup squad, while the rest of the four-man team will be from the shortlist of hopefuls. These include Fil-German player and PCA Open Champion Marc Sieber, Ricky Gonzales, reigning PCA champion Johnny Arcilla and PJ Tierro.

Radaza also announced that the tickets will be out in a week’s time and can be purchased at selected Thirsty Shakes and Juices outlets all over Metro Cebu. A team from the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Commission will also tour the different tennis courts to sell tickets. The tickets are also available in Radaza’s Lapu-Lapu City hall.

Ticket prices are P500 for free seating, P2,500 for a season pass that has reserved seats and souvenir items. There are also the limited VIP seats that sell for P5,000.

And because the seats at the venue are limited, Radaza is now working with a television company to cover the event to be aired delayed over national TV.

One of the things that Radaza has brought up with Mayor Paz Radaza was to put wide-screen TVs at the different covered courts of the city to give its residents a chance to see the games.

The Big Cube at the Big Dome

http://yfittopostblogph.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/600ftp_thebigcubeatthebigdome.jpg?w=600

By Patricia Bermudez-Hizon
For Yahoo! Southeast Asia

The Araneta Coliseum is synonymous with grand spectacles of both local and international stars. It is also regarded as a sports event mecca and the championship capital of the Philippine—having hosted the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier “Thrilla in Manila,” the World Basketball Championships in the late 70s, PBA battles, collegiate wars, and so many others in its 50 years of existence.

But it’s time for a serious upgrade.

Gines Enriquez, marketing manager and spokesperson for the Araneta Coliseum shared: “Our objective is to always enrich spectator encounter to give them total entertainment satisfaction inside the Big Dome. We owe it to our customers to give them something new, so we are always looking for ways to have an engaging experience for them”.

And what an experience it will be when people get a load of the Big Cube at the Big Dome. No matter how far you are seated, you will be treated to a front row experience all the time.

The cube, which was custom built from the US, is 400 times bigger than the old 8 year old board. Enriquez revealed, “It’s 16 by 17 meters or 60 by 70 feet in size when combined making it the world’s biggest four-screen high definition LED Cube screen center hung from an indoor arena. The Dallas Cowboys football stadium uses only a 20mm pitch but the Big Cube is several times clearer at a 10mm pitch.”

There’s so much room for creative ideas for it. They can patch it with, for example Solar TV’s PBA feed, and use 1/3 of the LED board as the score board and stats board. “Apart from that, we can show player profiles, and other trivias on the screen”, said Enriquez. “We’re adding production and content developers for the screens. We can also have live feed from outside the coliseum, like aerial shots, traffic situation, an interview with an artist, and the like.”

Apart from also upgrading the sound system, a future plan of the management is to put a LED ring around the coliseum like what they do in the NBA venues. “We plan on having Internet integration so that we can be open to possibilities of integrating with iPads and mobile devices so people can send messages, photos, and [other content],” said Enriquez.

The Big Cube was installed before the holiday season and was tested during the Splendide China Circus Show. PBA fans who will troop to the Big Dome for the semi finals will surely be in awe.

Upcoming shows like Martin Nievera and Sarah Geronimo’s Valentine concert, Sergio Mendez, Taylor Swift and other big events will surely be enhanced with the presence of the Big Cube.

Golf facilities are the ultimate waste of land and resourced imho.

Not all land needs to be developed and built upon. Golf courses offer "green spaces" in an otherwise urban jungle of glass, concrete, and steel. And it's not a waste of land, since golf courses are money-making businesses as well, especially if you have a clientele of those from the upper crust of society that love to play on a particular course.

well. golf courses also gulp millions of liters of water everyday just to maintain their greens. and there are only few or none at all public golf courses in the country, thus, not everybody (read: 95% of the population) can use and reap whatever benefits gained from these courses

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announced on Thursday it has struck a deal with Asia Brewery to stage an international football competition featuring the Philippine Azkals later this year.

Dubbed as the 1st Manila Beer Cup, the event will see three other Southeast Asian teams going up the Azkals in a single round robin format where the team with most number of victories emerging as champion.

PFF chief Mariano Araneta said he sat down with Hubert Tan, Asia Brewery's vice president for sales, on Tuesday and they agreed to stage the tourney sometime in October at the Rizal Memorial football stadium in Manila.

Asia Brewery donated P250,000 to the Azkals' campaign in the recent AFF Suzuki Cup in Indonesia where the nationalteam, beefed up by Fil-foreigners, reached the semifinals for the first time.

"We might invite teams from Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia to join in the four-nation competition," Araneta said.

Araneta said he will extend the invitation to the countries' respective officials during the Asean Football Federation (AFF) meeting on Feb. 19.

Meanwhile, Araneta said the Panaad Stadium in the Bacolod City is being spruced up in time for the Azkals' 2012 AFC qualifying game against Mongolia on Feb. 9.

"The lighting is now being fixed while the dressing rooms are under going renovations," said Araneta, noting that part of the budget used for the reconstruction came from the P1-million fund released by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Giant TV network ABS-CBN will telecast the highly-anticipated match, which is the first leg of the home-and-away qualifier with the second meeting set March 15 at the National Stadium in Ulan Bator in Mongolia.

The winner of the PH-Mongolia series will complete the group that includes host Bangladesh, Palestine and Myanmar.

The 10,000 Panaad stadium seats will be free of charge to the public on a first come, first serve basis although the 4,000 grandstand will be for sale at P300 each.
