Loads of surprises in store at Suria KLCC

By K. Anuradha

WHAT’s new at Suria KLCC? Plenty. Arguably the nation’s premier shopping mall, Suria KLCC has, since it opened, offered a wide variety of products and services under one roof.

The tagline “Everything under the sun” aptly describes what this mall has to offer.

Six years have passed since this shopping centre, divided into three parts called Ampang Mall, Ramlee Mall and Park Mall, opened and it still strives to improve its standing in Kuala Lumpur’s highly competitive retail market.

The changing shopping landscape in the KL’s Golden Triangle has included Suria KLCC in its sweep.

Now, Suria KLCC welcomes the public with the catchy “Always Something New at Suria KLCC”.

“We place a great deal of emphasis on the ambience and the shopping environment here. We will continue to provide ‘newness’ to Suria KLCC,” said senior manager marketing Datin Rafidah Jalil.

“Many new stores are opening, while some of the existing ones are upgrading and renovating their outlets for a new look,” she added.

Royal Doulton, legendary for its fine china, opened earlier this month and so did a new Middle Eastern restaurant, Amarjan.

Toy City, MyNews.com (magazine and bookstore) also opened this month, while existing money changer Salamath opened another branch within the same mall.

“Have you seen the new Bata store? It is different from the other Bata outlets in KL,” said Rafidah without elaborating.

Mont Blanc, which has been pro-minent in the mall, has recently renovated and reopened its store.

Efforts to boost shopper traffic at concourse level on Park Mall are already under way. A whole new area will be opened by July.

Rafidah said this area would house Tower Records, Times Bookstore (previously on the upper floors) and Guardian Pharmacy.

“This is to encourage business traffic in an area where a tunnel will link the mall with the new convention centre now under construction next door.

“We are also upgrading our services in a big way,’’ she added.

The second floor food court will be partly closed (below Tanjong Golden Village) for renovation works from June till September,” she disclosed.

The other half would be closed from September to October. By November, both sides of the food court will sport a new look.

The mall’s management has also closed some of the public toilets for renovation and improvement.

“Soon shoppers can expect better toilet facilities, an area for mothers to attend to their children/babies, and a premier toilet service.”

Premier toilets, said Rafidah, would have far superior facilities but the public would have to pay to use it.

There has always been exciting activities at Suria KLCC, but soon there would be more.

From 4pm to 7pm today, the Teddy Bear Picnic would return for the fourth consecutive year. It is a party for all children aged up to 12.

The only conditions are, you have to buy a ticket that costs RM25, and a stipulation that the teddy bear must be at least 12 inches high.

The continuing revolution at Suria KLCC is not limited to its interior.

As most KL-ites could already see by now, the façade sports brilliant batik motifs.

Suria KLCC has answered the call by the Prime Minister’s wife, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood, to dignify batik in a big way, and far from looking boring, the batik motifs by 10 local designers are now lending a fresh look to the mall.

ANyway I dun like their new lighting :( ....they used daylight fluorescent which is very bad at colour rendering.....they should have used cool white instead or better still - warm lighting; just like what it used to have.

Not exactly la KLCC management will not renew their contract. There are terms in ther contract with KLCC that they have to rennovate their premises every 4 or 5 years. I happen to ask one of my friend who works there and he said that is a must. A regulation if want to do business there. His shop will be close for rennovation next month.

yup....but the contract differs from one retailer to another. You dun see Cartier or Hermes renovating their premises even after 6 years :D

Suria can be a bit selective due to a high take-up for retail lots there so they could actually force retailers out after their contract expire if neccessary ;)

I still dun like it......it might seemed brighter but daylight fluorescent is not as comforting and bright as cool white ones.......I know it all sound gibberish but I did a dissertation on lightings therefore I know.......dunno what the lighting expert is thinking :ohno:

Luckily they had installed some incandescent lighting to subdue the harsh flourescent.....hehehe :D

Overall the foodcourt now looks much much better - classier and fell more expensive to dine-in. The chairs are also more comfy and good news for shutterbugs and skyscraper fans - more space to sit by the windows overlooking KLCC Park! :D The old Stone Grill (sadly I've always wanted to try it but haven't got a chance) are replaced by a much smaller Kyros Kebab which had yet to be opened. ;)

HI all, just finished browsing thru the pics on the new KLCC food court...and came to an interesting conclusion, the lighting plus the young people and the seating style, somehow brought to mind a 'high class' college cafeteria.......:P

I wonder whether higher grade material should have been used in the renovation, to create an even more upscale look for Suria, perhaps tropical hardwood flooring, or stone/solid cut marble......what do u guys think?

Lighting plays a VERY important role in the ambience of an interior space. The flooring is definitely high-quality granite (which in some case could be more expensive than marble). Tropical hardwood flooring and marble wouldn't be suitable in high-traffic area as these are not lasting materials (yes.....marble is an extremely 'delicate' stone) ;)

They probably need to declutter and change the lighting.....we would probably see a rearrangement after the entire food court been opened :D

I'm visiting KL for 4 days next March, my first trip in nearly 2 years, so am looking forward to checking out new places (for me) like Berjaya Times Square. Hopefully the K7? centre will also be finished by then?

Also, is Maju Junction a new centre? I've never been there before.

hi gary,

Maju Junction opened in 2003. Nothing much there but they have a bazaar up there with some asian antiques. There's also a salon that cuts your hair at rm10 only. You can also try some of the restaurants there.
For best shopping experience, go to Mutiara Damansara :okay:

How exciting, some new malls to discover!

The Jln BB malls are fine too, except for StarHill

One Utama is rather anti-hypermarts.
It has quite a number of artsy shops there, too. Don't forget to try the dishes offered in the restaurants. It's quite a complete mall compared to midvalley.

Its also great to hang in the street cafe's of Jln BB and watch the world go by.

Robot ambassador launches Sony store

BY CHRIS CHONG
KUALA LUMPUR: Sony’s corporate ambassador, QRIO – a humanoid robot with the latest artificial intelligence technologies – officially launched the Sony Style store at the KLCC shopping complex.

As QRIO danced to several songs on stage, a large crowd converged at the 730sq metre store to try out the latest in Sony’s range of electronic products.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2004/11/8/nation/robot.jpg

DANCE WITH ME: QRIO performing during the launch of the Sony Style store at KLCC yesterday.

Formerly known as Sony Wings, the store has a completely revamped layout and follows the “lifestyle” concept, offering visitors a more personal shopping experience.

“The name change from Sony Wings to Sony Style denotes a very special milestone for us, as it now complements the Sony Style Online Store to give customers a complete and convenient shopping experience, whether online or offline,” said Sony (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd managing director Takehiro Hatakeyama.

The new store is the first Sony Style in South-East Asia and the 17th in the world.

According to Hatakeyama, the store aims to serve customers like never before.

“Apart from extensive product training, the staff at Sony Style have also undergone hospitality training to provide visitors with hotel-quality service,” said Hatakeyama.

The store also serves as a one-stop centre where customers can attend workshops or send their equipment for repairs.

Hatakeyama also introduced the Sony Style privilege card, which awards points to customers who purchase items either in-store or online.

Actually Avenue K has an entrance at the KLCC station......no no escalator is required. Unless you wanna make a grand entrance at its main entrance then naik escalator lah. The connection tunnel between KLCC and Avenue K is seemless and convenient ;) Furthermore the tunnel now sport colourful ads which brings it to life a little. How I wish it had shops! :D

Clarks may open 1st flagship store at KLCC
By Nadia S Hassan, 14 Jul 2005 7:19 PM
Clark Store (http://www.clarksusa.com/location/?Level1=retail)

http://www.ianywhere.com/images/success_stories/Clarks.gif

UK shoe brand Clarks may open its first Malaysian flagship store at KLCC next year but only under the right circumstances, said Clarks Asia regional director Teh Peng Teng.

“We will go ahead with this only if we are ready and we manage to secure the location. We are very particular about where we sell our shoes.

"If successful, it will be a global store concept spread over a minimum of 1,500 square feet,” Teh said to reporters after the launch of Clarks Original collection of high-end fashion footwear.

Although most of Clark’s boutiques are located within the Klang Valley, Teh said Clarks was also looking at setting up boutiques in other states at the right location.

Teh said sales for Clarks had been growing at a phenomenal rate over the past year due to its aggressive marketing campaign and the decision to cut prices by 45%.

“We are expecting a minimum of 35% growth in sales for 2005 and we are confident of meeting that,” he said. Clarks is also looking to launch its range of children’s shoes in the next two months in Malaysia.

Distribution in Malaysia is handled through C&J Clark Malaysia, which is also its Asia regional office for Clarks. Clarks Originals are priced between RM208 and RM388.

Malaysia is the first stop for the launching of Clark’s Original range in Southeast Asia, followed by launches in Thailand and Singapore over the next two months.

Clarks Sees Good Response In M'sia For Its Originals Line
Updated : 14-07-2005
Media : Bernama

Renowned shoemaker, Clarks sees tremendous potential to make Malaysia a niche market for its products, says Teh Peng Teng, Clarks Asia regional director, C & J Clark (M) Sdn Bhd.

C & J Clark Thursday launched its "Clarks Originals" collections in Malaysia, making the country the first in Southeast Asia to do so, ahead of Thailand and Singapore.

Describing Malaysia as a good and attractive market, Teh said he believed that the Clarks shoes would be able to penetrate the Malaysian market with its design and sensitivity for special needs.

Teh said the company has decided to be very selective in its distribution and currently had about 20 stores in Peninsular Malaysia.

"The locations and areas have been identified as 'originals' high traffic areas," he added.

He also said that Clarks planned to make its presence in East Malaysia, entering markets like Kuching and Miri, very soon.

Targeted at modern and contemporary individuals, the Originals Collections are priced at between RM208 and RM308 for women's collection, and RM218 to RM388 for men.

The company will also launch the new limited products of Classic range which include the Desert Boot and Criketer this year.

Teh said Malaysia was the first country in the region chosen for the launch, and will be followed by Thailand and Singapore soon. It was earlier launched in Europe.

Clarks' history goes back to 1825, in the tiny English village of Street, Somerset. Today it is one of the largest footwear companies in the world, manufacturing and marketing close to 35 million pairs of shoes a year.

Suria KLCC retailers to post stronger sales
Updated : 06-06-2005
Media : Business Times
Story By : VASANTHA GANESAN

SURIA KLCC Sdn Bhd expects retailers in the shopping complex to post double-digit growth in sales for the year ending March 31 2006, over and above the RM1.47 billion achieved in the year ended 2005.

Suria KLCC, a subsidiary of KLCC Property Bhd nestled between the Petronas Twin Towers in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, saw retailers within its complex rake in RM1.23 billion in sales for the year ended March 31 2004.

Growth will be spurred by an increase in quality shoppers, good retail mix and enhancement of the shopping experience.

We hope to increase the number of quality shoppers to Suria KLCC ... one of the key success factors of a major shopping centre is the retail mix, general manager Andrew Brien said.

Suria KLCC, which had only 43 trading stores when it first opened in May 1998, now has over 320 outlets with net lettable space of 1 million sq ft catering to the mall¡¦s annual customer traffic of about 39 million.

Weekend patronage ranges between 100,000 and 130,000 and weekday averages 70,000. Weekends have more family crowd as well as out-of-town visitors, Brien said in an e-mail reply to a Business Times query.

Tourists make a good proportion of its visitors, accounting for 25 per cent of total traffic between July and September. In the other months, foreign visitors accounted for 12 per cent.

Brien is confident that Suria KLCC will remain popular even though there are new store openings such as The Curve, Avenue K and The Pavilion.

There is room for growth in Kuala Lumpur for quality retail.

We continuously challenge ourselves to stay ahead of the retail movement and to be able to pre-empt the changing retail trends and demand, as that will be the key factor of our relevance in the market.

¡§It is important to recognise these changes in consumer patterns and try to find pockets of opportunities from the changes,¡¨ he said.

Suria KLCC also expects to benefit from several new projects in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and the surrounding areas that comprise upmarket residential and office buildings.

We can leverage on this development as we expect the number of people working and visiting Suria KLCC to increase, especially when the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre is completed and starts operation, Brien said.

Meanwhile, KLCC Property is finalising the development plan for the two parcels of land under KLCC Suria¡¦s expansion programme.

The expansion will comprise a 45-storey building housing a six-level retail extension of Suria KLCC, office space and service apartments.

MBF plans version of KLCC Suria in Fiji
By Nadia S Hassan
10-06-2005

MBF Holdings Bhd is planning on building its own version of Suria KLCC in Suva, Fiji, says its executive director Martin Haeger.

“We will building our Morris Headstrom flagship store in downtown Suva by the end of 2006; we are in the final stages of the tender and expect construction to begin in the second half of this year.

"Our total investment in this venture stands at around FJD35 million (RM79 million),” he told reporters after MBF's AGM in Kuala Lumpur on June 10.

Morris Headstrom, which is a retailing and merchandising business, is a division under the MBF subsidiary, MBF Carpenter's Ltd.

Haeger said moving forward, MBF would continue to look towards Fiji and Papua New Guinea as its drivers of growth, both organic and through acquisitions.

The group’s activities in those markets beside retail include plantations and car financing.

Currently its operations in that region contribute 80% to revenue while the rest comes from its credit card division MBF Cards (M) Sdn Bhd.

M’sia to see 20.1 million tourists by ‘07
By Isabelle Francis

Toyad launching the Suria KLCC Pre-Late Night Shopping Event as Rafidah
and Tourism Ministry secretary-general Datuk Victor Wee look on.

Malaysia targets to attract up to 20.1 million tourists by 2007, with each of them spending up to RM2,500, as the government steps up efforts to attract more long-haul and higher spending visitors.

Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Leo Michael Toyad said on Dec 20 that tourist arrivals were expected to increase, with double-digit growth in the number of visitors from long-haul destinations.

For 2004, Malaysia had 15.4 million visitors and he expected it to increase to 16.5 million this year.

Visitors spent an average of RM1,800 to RM2,100, he said after the launch of Suria KLCC pre-late night shopping in Kuala Lumpur.

“Tourist arrivals are higher by 4% this year. Despite the decrease from China, we saw double-digit from other growth — from all the long-haul visitors.

“Of course, in China we are doing extra work now. We have segmentalised the markets and promotion is market-specific. We’re increasing our outreach in these areas,” he said.

Toyad said for January-September this year, there were 12.2 million tourists compared with 11.7 million in the previous corresponding period.

The ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Dr Victor Wee said to achieve the target, Malaysia should provide better quality shopping, which accounted for 20% of tourist expenditure. Over 30% of tourists’ expenditure was attributed to accommodation.

“We hope each tourist will spend up to RM2,500 in the next two to three years,” Wee said, of which 25% would be on shopping. He also said Asia Pacific would remain the major source of visitors.

Suria KLCC senior manager Rafidah Jalil said its sales in November and December, including its pre-late night shopping event, are expected to contribute 20% of its total sales this year.

Suria KLCC gets 140,000 shoppers each day on weekends and 70,000 daily during weekdays.

Launch spectacle stuns shoppers
Thursday January 5, 2006

Toga-clad male models carrying a palanquin on which sits
a model holding the Youth Dew Amber Nude Fragrance at Isetan KLCC.

THERE was a lot of excitement at Isetan KLCC recently.

However the buzz had nothing to do with the fact that it was Christmas week and or the fact that people were busy with their last-minute shopping.

In fact, the crowd were anticipating the arrival of Tom Ford's Estee Lauder collection.

The entire floor was teeming with people who heard about the launch of the Limited Edition products and were waiting to sample them.

And they were not disappointed as they also viewed a spectacular launch gambit of the products featuring male models in toga carrying a golden palanquin.

Seductively reclining on the palanquin was a female model holding the new fragrance by Estee Lauder called Youth Dew Amber Nude together with the Amber Nude Limited Edition Makeup collection.

200 people comprising celebrities like Amber Chia, Azura Zainal, Winnie Loo, Angel Wong, Bernie Chan, Gillian Hung also turned up to check out the products.

There was a rush to purchase the products however the Face Gloss and The Bronzer from the limited edition make-up collection was snapped up quickly.

Estee Lauder announced the collaboration with Tom Ford in April 2005.

The Tom Ford Estee Lauder Collection, specially created for the 2005 Holiday season, is a re-interpretation of select iconic Estee Lauder products including its famous Youth Dew fragrance and the brand's original gold fluted makeup packaging.

The initial line-up features 13 items, including the new Youth Dew Amber Nude fragrance collection and the new Amber Nude Limited Edition Make-up collection of lipsticks and compacts in sophisticated nude shades.

Estee Lauder spokes model Carolyn Murphy is featured in the sensual advertising as a reclining nude reminiscent of the nude in the original Youth Dew advertising from 1953.

Youth Dew Amber Nude fragrance will remain in the Estee Lauder line up, however the make-up items are limited editions and is only available for the holiday 2005 season only.

The collection is available exclusively in Isetan Suria KLCC.

Prices start from RM120-RM2, 300.

When Belgian deejays meet Britain's best
Saturday January 14, 2006
Story and photos by JADE YOONG
metro@thestar.com.my

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/1/14/central/p42Maarten.jpg

Britain-based Above & Beyond's Grant (left) and McGuinness.

SOME of clubland's biggest deejays rocked Celcom’s XPAX New Year's Countdown Party at KLCC.

On the list were Britain-based Above & Beyond and Belgian duo Filterheadz, and homegrown acts Blink and Twilight Action Girls.

A heavy thunderstorm threatened the mega-party in the early evening but it stopped soon after. Still, the event got off to a delayed start.

Twilight Action Girls' resident deejays at Zouk who play indie and electro-clash, were first up the list. They played to an empty venue.

Spinning the cheeky Everyday I Love You Less and Less by Kaiser Chiefs mildly lifted the dampened party mood.

Angguk Angguk Geleng Geleng by Ahli Fikir and Speed of Sound by Coldplay playing in the background of the soaked vacant space created a surreal pre-party feeling.

However, it was Blink, one of Zouk's resident deejays, who jumpstarted the celebrations.

Playing breakbeats laced with tech-funk, Blink took revellers by the storm.

As the tech-funk track Overneath by Meat Katie and Aquasky came on, the crowd cheered and finally started moving.

They went wild when the energetic deejay pranced around at the stage front.

Finishing off, he had everyone singing along to the timeless Enter Sandman (Original Version) by Metallica.

"It's fantastic playing here," said Blink.

"I hope this will give more Malaysians exposure to breakbeats and tech-funk, which is actually a groovy sound with a lot of different sub-genres within it," he said.

Filterheadz, made up of Bert and Maarten Wilmaers were up next.

Known for their eclectic sets, which cross many genres they can only be safely labelled "house".

Bert and Maarten used the Ableton software for their set and mixed using a laptop.

Bert seemed hyperactive, jumping up and down constantly while Maarten was equally amusing as he entertained the crowd with comical antics.

After Blink's high-energy set, Filterheadz brought it down a bit with minimal techno tracks.

But this was not for too long as the boys turned the crowd into a sea of bopping heads as they played Aftermath by Pryda.

Also in their set was an interesting edit of Two Months Off by Underworld .

As the crowd erupted into raucous revelry after counting down to 2006, Filterheadz continued pounding the dance floor with some heavy beats.

Waiting to be part of the action, Above & Beyond seemed a bit miffed as Filterheadz played longer than scheduled.

Eventually, Filterheadz reluctantly ended its set as Above & Beyond took centrestage.

Ranked 19th on Britain's DJ Mag's Top 100 Deejays List, Above & Beyond was here for the second time last year.

The duo is made up of deejays and producers Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamaki.

But Siljamaki, like last year, was missing again.

"It is really great to be back. The good thing about playing in Asia is that the crowd is always good," said Grant.

When asked about highlights for 2006, he said: "There will be lots of touring. We will be doing a two-month tour of the United States of America.

"Also, our debut artiste album Tri-State is due for release in March and we'll also be working on Anjunabeats Vol. 4, our remix compilation series."

They started their set with their signature piece Air For Life. However, it failed to generate much enthusiasm from the crowd.

Mixing was superior and a relief after Filterheadz's rather random mixing. However, their set was not particularly uplifting and sedated the party.

As the party ended at about 2am, the strong crowd seemed satisfied but yearned for more.

After all, it is the New Year.

Suria klcc has always been one of my favorite shopping centre. One of the best if not the best in Malaysia. It has a fantastic location below the iconic towers, beside a beautiful park. I like the good upkeep and maintainance of this 8 year old mall! Other shopping centres have tried to take its crown but it still retains the prestige location to have a shop. I like its upmarket shops in an environment that is comfortable to everyone. I hope you like my photo showcase of Suria

Travellator, Good job! Terrific pictures. Can you take photos of 1 utama's new wing, Starhill and the Signatures food court at suria too? I am sure all of us who are not in KL would want to see them. So many new stores from my last visit. Now if only Godiva chocolates will open a boutique there maybe at the expanded section since there is already an outlet at KLIA but it's so far away.

Science of speed the hands-on way
Friday March 24, 2006
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ
Photos by S.S. KANESAN

F1 is about speed and machine, and providing the cutting edge in motor-sports is science and technology. Highlighting that is an interactive mini exhibition, entitled “Petrosains Speed,” at Petrosains Discovery Centre in Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur.

The exhibition, launched by BMW Sauber F1 drivers Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve last week, will run until the next F1 race in Sepang.

The hands-on exhibits explore the fascinating science of speed.

Petrosains Discovery Centre at Suria KLCC last week.

The exhibition boasts 27 interactive displays as well as a host of hands-on programmes for children and adults alike.

Petronas education division vice-president Dr Rosti Saruwono said the centre placed great emphasis on lifelong learning and Petronas Speed provided a learning experience with a difference.

“The learning process becomes so natural, which is really how learning should ideally be, always,” said Dr Rosti.

Part of the crowd of F1 fans who gathered at Suria KLCC to catch a
glimpse of the two BMW Sauber F1 drivers and get their autographs.

The whole exhibition, which took 46 months to complete, was designed and developed by Petrosains with input and support from Petronas Motorsports.

Petrosains CEO Tengku Nasariah Tengku Syed Ibrahim said the gallery started from scratch and developed the whole concept in-house, which gave the staff tremendous opportunities to learn, experiment and innovate.

“The result you see today is something we are extremely proud of.

“Although small, it is one of the most innovative exhibitions relating to sports science and speed,” added Tengku Nasariah.

The exhibits are divided into three main themes – Fundamental@Speed which explores speed, Machine@Speed which investigates how science and technology of speed has lifted the F1 auto racing and Human@Speed which explores the human aspects of speed.

The F1 drivers and their team and members of the Press were taken on a tour of the Petrosains Discovery Centre where Heidfeld and Villeneuve drove the F1 simulators.

Petrosains Discovery Centre is located at Level 4, Suria KLCC. It opens daily except Monday.

Admission fee is RM5 for those above 13 years old and RM3 (children five to 12 years old).

Suria KLCC to get QC cert for food outlets
10-05-2006

KUALA LUMPUR: Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd aims to achieve Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification for all its food and beverage outlets in the shopping centre including Signatures Level 2 food court by early 2007.

A total of 24 food retailers directly managed by the Suria KLCC management are the first to get the certification granted by Lloyd's Registered Quality Assurance. It consists of quality control procedures and processes from the moment the raw materials are received to the time it is served.

Food and beverages make up an important component of Suria KLCC. This category accounts for more than 24.5% of the total retailers and contributes to 11% of the centre's sales turnover, KLCC Suria senior marketing manager, Datin Rafidah Jalil, said at the launch of the foodSAFE @ Suria KLCC campaign and presentation of HACCP certificates here yesterday.
