I have been thinking about the Preses nams for a long time and I came To A Final Conclusion that Preses nams looks so sad and he calls for new Appearance....
What do you prefer? Demolish Preses nams or reconstruct as new building?
If you support for a new construction you can post here your visualization...

I prefer better to recontruct Preses nams...

my visualizations :D yes this looks funny, but I drew these visualizations in newest' Paint program.

Ok, not bad, you could become a great architect! :)
Seriously, what's the point reconstructing it if it just doesn't meet even the simpliest standarts of modern highrises in all terms!? Actually, it was mentioned already a long ago that this structure will be demolished for sure.
But ayway, keep drawing, maybe there could be organised a tender for constructing something on that place, and you would be already prepared!

Sorry, but the fate is this building is decided by owners and architect has been selected - vx3 (http://www.vx3arch.com/index.html). Most likely it will be demolished to give a place for much higher building - central tower of the business center "Daugava".

Vx3 shall make outline design for the further development of area. For the design of new tower there most likely will be selected some cewl international stararchitect (aka Liebeskind, Foster etc.) and some international journals will mention Riga in this context. Then starchitect will place his signature on a design elaborated by some local firm. At least that's how things often happen in privately developed projects. But the result might be quite OK, because starchitects love to place their signatures on good designs.

Some more stuff to read about latest developments around "Preses nams":

Great!
My turn - self-made fantasy render called ''The Skyscraper''. About 140-160 meters high building.

Something similar to Depo Project's visions of the Kipsala's future created some years ago.

sorry egons but i reeeaaaaally hope you're not thinking of becoming an architect :D

anyway, in a few decades buildings like preses nams will be unique. i'd say it should be renovated or reconstructed in a way that would not ruin its distinctive look.

but oh well, developers always have the ball on their side.

but it's SOVIET modernism (:
if i were to decide, mirror glass facade and metal panels would be out of the question in cases like this. there are other ways, maybe not that cheap, but respectful to the building's original architecture.

Well, at least paint all the exterior walls in whatever, but not dark colour, and this building would look ok, still nothing more as it's general planning cannot allow anyhow to make this structure be fitable to contemporary highrise cluster!

Fix photovoltaïc panels all around and it will be fine :) Will look astonishing, energy self-sufficient and will not need to destroy it.

It's more interesting as it is. Do you really want another boring contemporary highrise like in thousands other European cities? I say just clean it and after 20-30 years you will appreciate it's "soviet" look.

Then you will remove those solar panels in 20-30 years ;)
Sorry, soviet time did not create a lot of creative buildings because nobody was fighting for the best and people were not pushed to their best... Travel a bit, you will find a lot of buildings as common as this one... If it was an historical building with strong symbolic, maybe, but here, really... It could afford an upgrade for now.

Look now in Russia what Russian architects create. At last, they can release their soul. This is good to bring hope and development to people. Pride is coming from history, but also in motivating vision for the future!

^^ Yep, that's something I was dreaming of! Thanks for this work! :) Such a pity, all those highrises are so scatterd around that the impression you get from them looking at each separately is not that big.. Imagine, City Council would've allowed building highrises only on the left bank, then we had probably one of the nicest mixes of skylines in Europe!

Well although Preses Nams isn't really my favourite (that'd rather be the Ministry of Agriculture and pre-reconstruction hotel Latvia) I like the Soviet modernism and functionalism a lot. The quality of construction and the current condition are two separate issues to consider but when it comes to aesthetics I just can't get this obsession with demolition..
