Selection of developer for Kg Kerinchi redevelopment moved to March 27
By Bernama
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:42

KUALA LUMPUR: The briefing on the redevelopment of the Kampung Kerinchi flats in Kuala Lumpur and the selection of the developer have been postponed from Friday March 12 to March 27, Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Minister Raja Datuk Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said Wednesday March 10.

He said the agreement on the postponement was reached at a meeting in Putrajaya with the residents association which requested the postponement.

The briefings on March 27, he said, would be on the relocation of the flat owners and on the proposed development plans of all four developers bidding for the redevelopment project.

After the briefings, a secret ballot would be carried out and the counting of the votes would be conducted to determine the selected developer, he said.

"At the request of the residents association, the voting will be conducted on the same day of the briefing, the votes will be counted openly and the selected developer announced," he said in a statement.

The briefing and voting would be held at the DBKL community centre in Lembah Pantai from 10am, he said.

The ministry has been instructed to send the developers' offer and plans to all the 480 owners of the flats one week before the briefings. "This is to ensure that the flat owners had enough time to make an assessment and discuss the matter with family members and decide on the developer of their choice," he said.

"This is being undertaken for the first time and I am confident the majority of the people would be happy with their choice as the process is being carried out openly with transparency right before their very eyes," he
said.-- Bernama

About 480 flat owners are involved in the redevelopment programme.
.
KUALA LUMPUR: The briefing and voting by secret ballot for the Kampung Kerinchi flat redevelopment project will be held on Sunday at 8pm.

In a statement, the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry said it was scheduled to take place at the hall of SMK Sri Pantai, Jalan Lembah Pantai Kiri, Lembah Pantai, here.

It said the event was in line with the ministry's focus on improving the quality of life of the people and eradicating urban poverty through redevelopment projects.

The redevelopment of the four-storey Kampung Kerinchi flat is the first project to be carried out. It involves 480 owners and 11 blocks.

The statement said the ministry had scrutinised and summarised the proposals of four developers. The summary has been distributed to owners with an official invitation letter to enable the owners to make informed choices.

Ministry deputy secretary-general (planning and development) Datuk Bakaruddin Othman will inform residents on the redevelopment project.

Representatives from City Hall's housing department will brief owners about their temporary relocation to the local authority's public housing units.

The name of the developer with the highest votes will be announced on the same night in the presence of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

This is the first time flat owners are being allowed to choose the developer for a redevelopment project.

For details, call Wan Nor Amiza Mhd Nor at 03-8889 7914 or Hani Halimahtun at 03-8889 7850.

Student activist Adam Adli punched at Kg Kerinchi

A negotiation session this morning between PKNS Kampung Kerinchi residents and the authorities was disrupted when a student activist was attacked.

According to a male eyewitness, believed to be a resident, student Adam Adli was punched while he was at the four-storey low-cost apartment block that has been slated for demolition.

Adam ( right ) and fellow student activist Ekhsan Bukhari were reportedly inspecting the premises when the incident took place.

The student activist, who had previously courted controversy for lowering a banner of Umno chief Najib Razak during a student rally at Umno headquarters, suffered injuries to his face.

When contacted by Malaysiakini , Adam confirmed that he had been attacked and suffered injuries, and was lodging a police report at the Jalan Pantai Baru police station.

The low-cost Kampung Kerinchi flats are earmarked for redevelopment under the urban renewal scheme and its residents will be relocated. - Picture by Jack Ooi

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — Thirty-four families who were forcibly evicted from their flats in Kampung Kerinchi here bade their final farewell today to the rundown premises that had been their home for generations.

For the residents, their time living within the building’s weathered halls and walkways ended bitterly when they received a notice from the Federal Territory Land and Mines Office ordering their evacuation on March 26.

According to the notice, the low-cost Kampung Kerinchi flats had been earmarked for redevelopment under the urban renewal scheme and its residents had to be relocated.

But despite being offered new, alternative homes and compensation, the families are finding it hard to accept their new lives elsewhere.

Hayati Haron, 53, said that she had lived here for 50 years with her husband and son, and the flats held all her memories.

“I got married here, my son got married here...what is the RM 7,300 compensation compared such memories?” she said.

“The new flats we’ve been moved to are nice, but they don’t make up for this bitter experience.”

Shop owner Nor Azlan Haron (picture) , 44, had suspended his business for over a week because the new flats in Muhibbah PPR do not have sufficient shop lots to accommodate him.

Another resident who only wanted to be known as “Pak Anjang” said that although the flats were small, he was happy with his old home because it was located close to public facilities.

“I can take the LRT from here, the bus, there’s a hospital nearby...this place is fit for millionaires!” said Pak Anjang.

“When I first moved in here, it was so long ago that I didn’t have this,” the 70-year-old joked, indicating his flowing grey beard.

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, who was also there, insisted that the residents were not being unreasonable for originally refusing to vacate their homes.

“They are the rightful owners of the flats. They are not squatters — their rights should be respected. Don’t treat them like they’re idiots,” she said.

Mohd Idrus Tukiran of the Kampung Kerinchi Flat Action Committee said that they planned to lodge a report to the Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) for the physical and emotional pressures the residents had experienced.

The majority of the flat owners who had agreed to move have been relocated to PPR Kerinchi, and their rent for the next three years will be paid for by the developer to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The Sun reportd that they had signed an agreement with Suez Domain, and will be offered 860 sq ft medium-cost apartment units worth between RM300,000 to RM400,000 at the same site once construction is completed.

The developer offered to buy back the apartment units at RM125, 000 each if the flat owners do not want to move in.

The Kampung Kerinchi low-cost flats were built by PKNS in the 1970s.

Most of the flat owners are senior citizens.

THE mood at Kampung Kerinchi Flats in Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur was sombre as 34 families gathered for the last time before bidding goodbye to their childhood homes.

It came after two years of struggle with the authorities involving another 433 families who have since moved out due to a redevelopment project in Kg Kerinchi. The 34 families had refused to move as they were unhappy with the developer and for not being given proper compensation.

According to them, the Land Acquisition Act 1960 was used to evict them while the RM73,000 compensation came from the Land Office. The families have since taken the case to court.

They had been offered houses by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) at PPR Muhibbah in Puchong and PPR Seri Chempaka in Pantai Dalam. Their last day was April 15.

Fill with debris: A resident searching through what was left of his home.

Jamaliah Kudai, 70 has lived in Kg Kerinchi for 50 years. She moved there after it was built the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS).

Jamaliah could not hold back her tears as she stood at the site with her children and grandchildren when demolition works began.

“What is left are just memories for us because of the eviction. We are not happy but life has to go on.

“We had a great life here as everyone lived harmoniously. People gathered for weddings and funerals. My husband died here in 2002 and my children were married here.

“We can’t afford to come back to Kg Kerinchi as we are not part of the transit. Perhaps what we got out of the compensation will be used to buy a PPR unit because we can’t afford to buy anything else,” she said.

Jamaliah’s son Noraslan Haron, 44, said he would miss his home very much as it was the only one he ever had. “I was born and raised here, this was everything to me but now I have been evicted from my own home. Everything was so convenient for us because we live near the city centre.

http://starstorage.blob.core.windows.net/archives/2012/4/16/central/m_04Nomahani.jpg

Saddened : Jamaliah’s daughter-in-law Nomahani Marhasam, 39 wipes her
tears as son Noraslan looks on after an emotional goodbye.

“We had so many bittersweet memories, so we will continue to use all available avenues to get our right.

“I am still waiting to claim my stall and for this I’m pushed around between the developer and DBKL,” he said, adding the matter would also be brought to PKNS.

Meanwhile, Kg Kerinchi Flats Action Committee member Mohd Idros Tukiran said the fight was not over as they still have a legal avenue to pursue their case.

He said they would take this matter to court and submit a memorandum to the Human Rights Commission. “We have been pressured into moving out and we succumbed because we have children. But we still have our rights,” said Mohd Idros.

Present at the gathering was Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, who said that the accusation made by certain parties were false.

She said the issue was never a political one but merely to help the residents fight for their rights.

“We respect everyone’s decision but it is unfair to be labelled as an instigator. If they really wanted to go ahead with this development, it should have been transparent instead of using a referendum and forcing eviction on the people.

“My only hope is for the 34 families not to be blacklisted,” she said.

Also present was Community Residents’ Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (Permas) president Tan Jo Hann, who said they would be launching a campaign pushing for a change in imposing legal acts unto people.

SERAMAI 7,000 penyewa rumah PPR di Kuala Lumpur akan menerima surat tawaran pembelian rumah tersebut mulai hari ini.

way too many... worse still they are all quite similar in look and feel! there are some nice outdoor centers in philippines which make ours look like they hatched decades ago even before getting dbkl approval. theirs put ours to shame!

thanks to all those visionless and clueless developers, KL will be saturated with a bunch of mediocre malls cannibalizing on each other with their same tenants. the only promising one which will be a game-changer is tradewinds. then again, it's nothing revolutionary in design since they made it quite clear it is inspired by the mori center in roppongi. well, at least it will be different.........
