Falling object gives residents the jitters

A PIECE of construction material which fell through the roof of a house near the controversial Taman Tembaga project in Penang triggered another round of anxiety and fear among the nearby residents.

B.C. Lim, 56, claimed that the piece of round metal, measuring about 9cm in diameter, crashed through the roof and landed just centimetres away from her bed in the master bedroom on Saturday morning.

?Luckily, I was not there, otherwise the piece of metal would have hit me,? she said.

The retired teacher, whose house is a few metres from the project, claimed that this was not the first incident as her windowpanes were also damaged during rock-blasting works last year.

?The project is too near to our houses and it is posing danger to everyone staying here,? she said, adding that the project should be stopped.

Island Park Residents Association secretary A.N. Ramoo, who called a press conference the same afternoon after this latest incident, said the Penang Municipal Council should be monitoring the project closely to ensure that all safety and precautionary measures, such as nettings, were placed around the construction site, to avoid any mishaps.

He also urged the council to meet Island Park residents to discuss problems arising from the project.

He said the council had earlier arranged a meeting with the residents to talk about the project on May 13 but later cancelled it.

It was reported on May 18 that the developer, Mensoll Corporation Sdn Bhd, had withdrawn its application for amended plans, thus rendering the council's stop-work order irrelevant.

Council president Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib had told reporters that the developer does not have to comply with the stop-work order since it has reverted to its original plan of building only one block of 28-storey condominium units.

He also said the council would continue to monitor the project weekly.

Ramoo said although the developer of the project was supposed to revert to its original plans, the actual construction site clearly showed space for two blocks of building and not one.

?We hope the council will set up a meeting with us, the affected residents here, soonest possible as we have the right to know and understand what is going on right behind our homes,? he added.

Personal assistant to Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh, Danny Law was at the press conference.

?The council should immediately issue another stop-work order against the project,? Law said.

The condominium project has drawn the ire of residents since it started in 2002 as it is located on a slope, just metres away from their houses.

State Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan and Ahmad Phesal could not be reached for comment.

The curvy balconies provide a bit of dynamism look to it! Pretty nice :)

it is ok to me but what i don't like is that it looks so stunted. should make it about 35 stories :rant:

earlier the company said something about 30 stories (read it in newspaper) and this building was supposed to be a single building. they have changed the plan many times...or is it the media's nonsence??

actually they should build this building nearer to the hill. it is so damn close to the terrace houses below. let me see if i have a pic to show this....

well, i think it is ugly:D (not really ugly but just not beautiful)

i think it will be ok to build it there but nearer to the hill. i saw them digging quite a large area on the hill during construction, but why build the building so near those houses?? maybe they should change the position of the swimming pool and the building......

well i think the whole buildin just dont fit in at all(too big).... they should built somethin like those skini ones in Gurney~ (it does'nt hav to be tall) :D anyway~ we cannot xpect much from cheap developer rite?? :D as long as its big and cheap~ i dont think they care much bout "beauty"~ :lol:

actually the developer of this building is the same developer as the gurney beach resort (beside gurney hotel). this building is actually one of the best residentials in that area (best coz it is a resort condo??maybe service or something) but i don't know why this design...... :bash:

ah well~ maybe the interior will be more beautiful then the exterior~ :D anyway~ maybe beautiful design will cost more than this design~ i guees~

the skyline woundn't be much different but i think that will ba a nice place to view greenlane heights:D
