Great pictures, i stayed at that hotel behindthe Levis store in August 2003.I can't remember the name. I think were on the 31st floor (maybe i'm not sure) and it over looked Union square.I know we were up there because i could see the bay and roof tops of other buildings. Those balconies were friggin' small though, it was only about 1 1/2 ft wide! The one night, fog came in and was about the same level as our room. There was a nice restaurant atop the hotel with a great view. Thanks for sharing, i need to go back there.

Just got back from San Fran with my best friend today, we were there for 6 days. WE LOVED IT.
We were also with the two most beautiful women we've ever seen, so that helped! ;)
Great times in a great city.

I was in San Francisco last weekend and this week. So on Monday and Tuesday, I decided to go out to take some photos! This is my second time visiting the city and I am so in love with this city. It is deffenetly my favorite city on the West Coast. A great city to just spend days. The city is full of beautiful architecture and it is so pleasant to just walk around. :okay: Anyway enjoy!

Hey, thanks for those nice pics at a beautifui time of year in SF. I especially loved those pics near the top of Nob Hill. I lived in that neighbourhood when I was first married, and walked to a job in the Chinatown/North Beach area every day. Those are streets I remember well.

Nice pictures!

With a cool November breeze under the warm sun, I did a short walk along the Embarcadero before giving up and taking the streetcar. Although redeveloped following the last major quake to include a wide boulevard and pedestrian facilities, there are still a lot of port facilities so beyond the stretch adjacent to the main financial district, I didn't feel the urge to explore any more of it. Nice boulevard though.

I've seen you do this before on the New York section. You're pic's are great but please place them all in one thread, or else it seem like spam. (To Americans at least)

Having everything in 1 thread will cause massive delays in loading after a few parts. People have complained about loading 100 pictures on a single page before, which is why I prefer having a series of threads instead.

Each part has different photos and sometimes have their own themes. Spam indicates repetition, which is not the case here and in my other photo series.

I'm loving your series.

San Francisco does look like Athens in some general perspectives.

I have always found San Francisco and Seattle to be fairly similar cities, both built on hills surrounding a bay with blue collar cities (Oakland, Tacoma) just a short distance away; ferry systems for getting around, a lot of good food and educated inhabitants. I had some good friends who lived for years in San Francisco who had to move to Seattle for business reasons. I told them, they would probably end up enjoying Seattle more especially since they were starting a family. This turned out to be the case.

^ yee! beautiful photographs. u should stop in sonoma county next time and enjoy some fine food and wine next time ur down here (a little more laid back then sf, or napa for that matter).

I've said this before: There are only 2 cities in the US that are truly vibrant & urban by nature, New York and San Francisco. Then there are the rest and the wannabes. Only San Fran is much more visually pleasing to the eye than NYC.

Hehe, why, is South Bay better? I'm not from the area and this is only my second time to the city. Also, was in a passenger van with seven other people. I was just going for the ride. Everyone wanted to check out this Tiburon place because of the name, like shark in Spanish.Adios

Hey everyone,
I had to go up to San Francisco for work this past weekend, which I was more than happy to volunteer to do! I've always liked this city as it has a lot more soul and character than LA. It reminds me a lot of Melbourne in many ways; mainly from the sheer quirkiness. I'd never live here as the cost of housing is shocking and besides, I like Melbs better. However it is a gorgeous city and a perfect one to walk around. The weather wasn't the greatest on Saturday, but the city looks good in the rain.

Those arial pics are awesome!!!! I walked across the Golden Gate with fog swirling around ..which was cool...in all ways...Took heaps of pics as well..but here is just one showing variety in San Francisco Architecture....A beautiful city!

Two weeks ago, I vacationed in SF (for the third time) and then LA. I'm from England. I took these whilst in and above SF (I went on a helicoptor flight). You can say that again, I worked on Nob Hill for 9 years and had to park my car up on a hill at 90 degree angle.....................Automatic engine, no prob...Try it on stickshift and raining and a million taxi cab drivers honking like crazy........But survived and still love the city...:lol:

Your wrong on that one pal. I don't know how many times I've been in San Francisco and it was so hot that I was sweating just walking down the street. I will agree that the city is cooler on average than most cities but it does have a number of hot days every year.

Your wrong on that one pal. I don't know how many times I've been in San Francisco and it was so hot that I was sweating just walking down the street. I will agree that the city is cooler on average than most cities but it does have a number of hot days every year.

The hottest I can recall in the last 30 years was 104 degrees F.

In normal years it does get into the 90s a few times, usually in June and/or September, although not so far this year (apparently one of the coldest on record).

But there are few other places in the US where it's VERY common to find daytime high temperatures in the 60's (F) in mid-summer (June, July, August) and when the fog rolls in, usually preceded by 20 to 30 mph winds off the ocean, it can feel very cold indeed.

the weather is really cold all year , thats the only turnoff, light jacket is almost always required

My preferred temperature range is 50s - mid 70s. Wearing a light jacket doesn't bother me at all. San Fran's climate is ideal for someone like me. It has just enough change between winter & summer to give it more of a "4 seasons" which is something I like to experience.

Nice pictures. I'd like San Francisco to get a couple of new skyscrapers though. The architecture feels a bit 1980's.

San Francisco built a number of new highrises in the mid-2000 period: One Rincon Hill (condo), The Infinity (condo), The Millenium (condo), 555 Mission (office building), SOMA Grand (condo), Trinity Plaza (Condo), a new highrise hotel (name escapes me right now).

Previous to that, there was another period of highrise building in the 1990s during the "dot-com boom".

And it seems like things are about to get going again--talk of at least 4 or 5 projects planned 3 or 4 years ago but put on hold due to the recession but being re-activated.

These aren't city photos (although you can barely make out San Francisco in the distance on the first and last ones) but I thought I'd share them here. Hope no one minds. These were all taken today, February 27, from Big Rock Trail in Marin County:

as far as skyline shots go, i particularly like the last shot. can't recall seeing that view before.

Nice pictures! How close is this to that road leading to Muir Woods? I took some pictures of the scenic views towards the ocean when my friends and I were coming down the hill.

Actually, I can see SF in shots 1, 5 and 7 of the Marin series (it's in the far right of #5). Very nice shots.

Anyway, I see the grass is getting seriously green from all the winter rain. Am looking forward to getting back.

foadi - that's the view from Potrero Hill and it's my favorite view of the skyline.

xzmattzx - this is above Lucas Valley, which is about 10 miles due north of Muir Woods.

CE (have to get used to that) - good eye! You might also be able to make out the Marin Civic Center in that shot. The blue roof (and the city for that matter) were much more visible with the naked eye than I could capture with my camera.

By the way, for any non-Bay Area viewers, these shots illustrate one of the best things about San Francisco: How easy and quick it is to get out of the city and into a place where it's just you and nature. This is the case because wealthy Marin County managed to put much of itself off limits for development (through various means from creating federal and state parks through zoning to inducing farmers to sell development rights to preservationist groups) years ago. These days most of the developed land is along Highway 101 and in a few old (and increasingly expensive) towns. The rest looks like these shots--beautiful (and you should see the coastline!).

The 2011 Bay To Breakers festivities wrapped up on Sunday and thankfully the Internet provides numerous ways to enjoy some of the finer moments of the madness. Thanks to the power of home videos, we've got footage of an early stretch of the race route South of Market around 4th and Howard. At the bottom I've posted some video that is part of an eight-part series of video shot at this location. A quick YouTube search of Bay To Breakers 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bay+to+breakers+2011&aq=f) will yield the remaining sections of the video.

The video we've provided below is a good cross-section of the race. Part one shows you the world class runners, with the occasional blue Smurf walking by at the bottom of the screen. Part two shows some of the serious but not world class runners, along with some quality costumed folks. Part seven allows you to see the people with no intention of taking this race too seriously.

I'm waiting on some pictures from the race, but Twitter has come through with some solid photos throughout the day. For example, if you were wondering what Manny Pacquiao has been up to since his dominant victory over Shane Mosley, he was clearly using that fight to prep for Bay To Breakers:

Over 50,000 runners successfully crossed the streets of San Francisco during yesterday's centennial Bay to Breakers footrace, which featured new race regulations, said race organizers.

During the 2011 Zazzle Bay to Breakers race spokeswoman Stephanie Reichin said there was not 100 percent compliance with new rules, which included no floats, zero-alcohol enforcement on the 7.5-mile course, and a crackdown on unregistered runners, but the race was still a "smashing success."

Fewer people came through the finish line at San Francisco's Ocean Beach without bibs compared to previous years and the vibe of the race was calmer, Reichin said.

"We really drew a line in the sand," she said. "(This year) sets the tone for what future races will be like."

Based on preliminary feedback from San Francisco police and neighborhood associations, there were fewer incidents throughout the city, according to Reichin.

Police reported 25 arrests throughout the race along with a report of a 30-year-old man who had fallen off a house roof in the 1500 block of Fell St. yesterday afternoon. The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

In the North of the Panhandle neighborhood, or NOPA, North of the Panhandle Neighborhood Association President Jarie Bolander said this year's race was much better than last year.

Bolander was impressed with increased police presence, more barriers throughout the neighborhood, and more porta-potties, although there were still reports of urination in residents' front yards, he said.

Enforcement of open containers, no floats, and an early race start at 7 a.m. all contributed to a successful race, Bolander said.

"The mood of the crowd was more festive than last year," he said.

"Even neighbors were out having a good time."

After the race, Bolander said the race organizers' and San Francisco Department of Public Works cleanup efforts were "stellar," with only some trash and remnants of yesterday's race-celebration still lingering.

In another change in the 100th annual race, all registered Bay to Breakers finishers will have their names printed in a special edition of the San Francisco Examiner on Wednesday, Reichin said. In past years a shorter list of finishers has been printed.

Every year I tell myself to go and every year I miss it. My brother and I went to Haight Ashbury and there were a lot of people in costumes. Maybe next year. :(

After 15 hrs in the sky nice to see San Francisco.desertpunks aerial reminded me of flying into SF.....the first arriving from Australia and the second approaching the parallel runways on an Alaskan Airlines fight, I may have been a bit concerned otherwise.Then 3rd leaving for the east. OK not much SF detail but it was memorable !

Yesterday I posted a pic of a glass dome as described in my first pic.....a beautiful artefact of San Francisco and maybe something many locals or tourists may miss unless they ventured inside.....today I see the pic has been deleted/forbidden. I was in San Fransicso with a friend around the 21st of may for a couple of days (not enough time i know but just about everywhere we went we had this problem!) while driving from LA to Portland. We both loved it there so much so for me that i could easily live there for a couple of years!

Chinatown is a neighborhood west of San Francisco's Financial District. The neighborhood is roughly bounded by Bush Street to the south, Powell Street to the west, Broadway to the north, and Kearny Street to the east. San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest, largest, and arguably the most famous Chinese enclave in the United States, and maybe in all of the world outside of Asia.

Chinatown was first settled by the Chinese in the 1850s, when 30,000 emigrated over from Guangdong Province to participate in the Gold Rush. Many settled in this area uphill from Portsmouth Square, where the city was begun in the previous decade. More Chinese men came over in the 1860s and 1870s to build the railroads in California. With so many Chinese on the West Coast, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed by Congress in 1882 to prevent more immigration. Other laws limiting the freedoms of Chinese effectively pushed these men into one 12-block area that became the center of the neighborhood.

Like other parts of the city, Chinatown was almost completely destroyed by the Earthquake of 1906. After the earthquake, city officials planned on moving Chinatown to Hunter's Point, and having the now-desirable land be open for Whites to build on. The Chinese resisted, and built feverishly in the same spot to preserve their area. Many buildings at this time used

Over time, laws that forced the Chinese to live in Chinatown, prevented men from bringing over their wives, or prohibited the emigration of more Chinese, were relaxed and lifted. Chinese Americans now have the ability to move about freely in the country like anyone else, many have left for integrated neighborhoods and suburbs. Now, only the elderly and poor live here. Neighborhood businesses that catered almost exclusively to other Chinese now have given way to tourism. The tourist industry is so successful that the neighborhood has almost become a parody of itself. Still, Chinatown flourishes and remains one of San Francisco's most recognized landmarks.

The Kong Chow Temple and Benevolent Association, on Stockton Street at Clay Street. The temple was founded in 1851 and moved to this location in 1977. Barely visible on the left is the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association building. The group, informally known as the Chinese Six Companies, was formed in 1882 to help conduct business with non-Chinese.

Many buildings in Chinatown have Chinese writing on tablets near the doorways. This tablet, for instance, thanks a Hong Kong businessman for raising money in his city to purchase the building and then give for use as a hospital.

Portsmouth Square was the site where Yerba Buena, later renamed San Francisco, was started in 1846. It was here that Capt. John B. Montgomery of the USS Portsmouth raised the U.S. flag near the Mexican custom house. In 1848, the announcement of gold was made here, beginning the Gold Rush.
