View Full Version : San Francisco Photolog [by SSC members]
Mortar & Pestle June 4th, 2004, 04:04 AM ON SITE IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA!!
I am happy to finally present you all with a photo series of San Francisco, taken on two separate occasions within the past month amid splendid, sunny weather.
In trying to decide how to arrange all these photos, I thought of some alternatives:
1) chronological - where I started...where I ended up
2) formal/structural - by building type
3) geographical - as per location in San Francisco
For reasons of simplicity, I decided on alternative 3!
SOME NOTES, before you start viewing:
1) All images have by taken by the 5.0 mgpxl Sony DSC-V1 camera, except where noted.
2) THE PHOTOS IN THIS THREAD ARE SEVERELY REDUCED IN SIZE AND QUALITY BY THE SERVER I AM USING!!! Most were taking very quickly and without much regard for artistic composition. :wallbash:
3) I will do my best to give identifying captions, though I have yet to identify all the buildings myself (even with the help of www.skyscrapers.com)! You will find the names of architects/firms, construction year, location and additional comments preceding some photos.
4) Please also visit my Berkeley Photo Threads! :colgate:

John June 4th, 2004, 11:58 AM Beautiful! No wonder why SF is considered one of the best cities in USA, I'd love to live there :)
NorthStar77 June 4th, 2004, 01:12 PM What more can I say? Superb! :) These images only confirms what a friend of mine that was there a month ago, told me. That it is a very nice, friendly, walkable city, with beautiful scenery!! I really want to visit SF one day, seriously!
BTW. why didn't you use www.photobucket.com, you can store larger images there, up to 250kB:)
AltiusAltiusAltius June 4th, 2004, 04:03 PM Great shots man! :)
My favorite is the one with sloped California St & Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel towering atop Nob Hill!
San Francisco is full of architectural treasures and your selection is great! The Market Street tower you haven't identified is Four Seasons Hotel & Residences (surrounded by some of the most beautiful heritage buildings such as Humboldt Bank, Phelan Building etc). I very much prefer the Marriott though!
The other tower on Powell St you were wondering about is Sir Francis Drake hotel (behind it you have Crowne Plaza Union Square hotel and the Fairmont high above on the Nob Hill...)
Do you have any more photos?

DenverDane June 4th, 2004, 04:36 PM Great photos, M&P! :okay: Reminds me of my trip to this city 10 years ago. San Francisco is definitely among the most interesting cities in the USA. It's got some great architecture, impressive bridges, as well as a beautiful setting.
RafflesCity June 4th, 2004, 10:27 PM delightful tour!
I'm really impressed with the rich architectural heritage and the chinatown!
hypermount June 4th, 2004, 10:53 PM Great pics!
Many things to see.
Monkey June 4th, 2004, 10:55 PM Raffi, you really should start using different routes for your LDN - SG - LDN trips. :D That way you could stop over and pay SF a visit. :okay:
Wu-Gambino June 4th, 2004, 11:06 PM Awesome pics! Transamerica Pyramid is one of the greatest skyscrapers in the US!
Here's some sites that don't resize pics:

I have been to SF, in my mum's stomach that is
But yeah the West Coast of US is one place I'd like to check out and these pics are a good reason to!
Daortíz June 4th, 2004, 11:21 PM Is so cool to have such a nice city 6 hours away in car
from Los Angeles :)

Monkey June 4th, 2004, 11:45 PM True, SF IS a great city! And your pictures are wonderful, Mortar & Pestle! :okay: Thank you! :)
So you'll think about it, Raffi? ;)
Mortar & Pestle June 4th, 2004, 11:53 PM It's so nice to see so many of you coming out to visit SF........on SCity, that is! :colgate:
It is a city more beautiful than words (and pictures!) can ever demonstrate.
bagel June 5th, 2004, 12:33 AM Ah San Francisco! What a place! What a city! A long time ago, as a visiting New Yorker, I told myself that if there were any place on the west coast I would live in it would be San Francisco.
Now I almost have my wish. I live just an hour's drive south and I love it.
Wonderful pics, Mortar & Pestle. Bravo!
:applause:
I haven't been there often enough this year. Ah, but the summer is coming... :)
kiku99 June 5th, 2004, 03:15 AM SF is a beautiful city. i have to go there again sometimes. actually i am considering about going to SF State U. ;)
Mortar & Pestle June 5th, 2004, 08:33 AM @NorthStar & Naptown...thanks for the Photobucket tip. I uploaded my S.F. photos to that site and discovered - aside from humongous proportions! :D - terrible granularity and roughness in the images. :wallbash:
So I think this time, I willl have to settle with snapfish smallness!
@ AltiusAltiusAltius....as I acquire more photos, I will be sure to show them to you! Tomorrow I will be in the City (as San Francisco is called here in the Bay Area) once again for my cousin's graduation ceremony, so there will no doubt be some occasion for photography, including of St. Mary's Cathedral!!!
Btw, thanks for the helpful identifying information!
atkinson1 June 5th, 2004, 11:12 AM I love your pics. I've always been a huge fan of Lombard Street, and San Francisco athough I've never been to the US. Awesome skyscrapers, amazing architecture, great dense skyline.
San Fran has alot of similarities with Auckland too, like the harbour setting, geography of the landscape etc.
AltiusAltiusAltius June 5th, 2004, 01:24 PM Good on ya buddy - keep the great work!
Grace Cathedral is the best on the Western Coast! Deserves a separate thread! :)
Cheers
StevenW June 5th, 2004, 03:53 PM San Francisco ROCKS!

I just realized that that building is like a Westcoast Flatiron Building.
Monkey June 5th, 2004, 11:34 PM We do have an old building in downtown SF that's called the Flatiron Building, Naptown. It's not Coppola's charming greenie, though ... it's at the corner of Market & Sutter & graced the opening of the TV show "Crazy like a Fox" ages ago. ;)
Here's a picture of it: http://www.noehill.com/sf/landmarks/market/flatiron_thumb.jpg
The Flatiron Building is San Francisco Landmark No. 155. Behind it you can see the Hobart Building, which Mortar & Pestle showed us above. :) A few blocks further on Market is another flatironish building, the Phelan Building, SF Landmark No. 156:
http://www.noehill.com/sf/landmarks/market/phelan_thumb.jpg
As you can see, San Francisco has quite a few flatiron buildings. Oddly shaped lots and streets laid out at angles other than the ubiquitous 90 degrees/grid pattern invite such abundance. :okay:
P.S. Both pictures appear on the website of noehill.com.
Mortar & Pestle June 7th, 2004, 04:13 AM well, you guys have seen the pictures! now, an important question remains. :
should i rework the thread so that the pictures are nearly two times bigger (using photobucket!!), risking a tiny bit of image distortion??? or should I leave the photos as they are?
don't fix it if it ain't broke is what i'm thinking, unless enough of you convince me you'd like to see these images in full size!
Buck June 7th, 2004, 04:19 AM Great pictures. I relaly must see San Francisco for meself one day.
I love this building:

Downtownboi August 19th, 2004, 06:48 PM WOW!!!! AWESOME PHOTO THREAD!
Love seeing the "lesser known" San Francisco towers.
Mortar & Pestle August 20th, 2004, 06:12 AM Thanks, Downtownboi! Glad you enjoyed the thread! A special thanks goes to Whose Homepage, for helping to revive this thread!!! :)
Mantas September 3rd, 2004, 06:05 AM Fabulous photos, the city is also stunning and in same place charming. Great work M & P :okay:
Colossus September 6th, 2004, 08:53 PM Thanks man! I really enjoyed those pics :)
Next week im going to see myself and I also planned a heli flight, as SF is one of my favourite cities for that.
I remember Oakland being the default airport for Flight Simulator!
I'll put a flower in my hair! lol
:nocrook:
Monkey September 6th, 2004, 10:04 PM Have a wonderful time, Colossus! The weather is just GREAT at the moment--hope it'll last. :)
Colossus September 7th, 2004, 02:51 PM Thanks Whose Homepage, hope the weather WILL be good, as about an hour ago I booked a heli flight with my travel agency. Whoopie!!
StevenW September 11th, 2004, 07:13 PM Well guys, I'm back from my awesome trip I had in beautiful San Francisco! I had the BEST time! It truly is the greatest city I've ever been to. :)
Be on the look-out for a large photo thread of San Francisco by me. :D
I took over 250 pics! :D
I just hope I can find enough space to upload them all. :)
I loved every part of the city. I visited just about every nook and cranny that I could find. I LOVE the public transit system!! :) :) :) It's the way ALL cities SHOULD do it! :D
Other than the "Hyde" cable car not working for a good while on one of my days, (Too Many of US Tourists! ;) LOL), everything went smooth and I got to see and experience ALOT! :D
I want to go back again as soon as I possibly can. :)
I wish I had 3 or 4 more days on my trip, but, I did do alot in my nearly 5 day trip. :)
Mantas September 11th, 2004, 07:15 PM Nice to hear you made it and had a good time :okay: Waiting for the photos :D
Jules September 11th, 2004, 08:54 PM Awesome shots, I love SF, greatest city in western USA.
Mortar & Pestle September 11th, 2004, 09:18 PM Steven...we're looking forward to the photo series. Glad you enjoyed this marvelous city.
Hi WH & Mantai :hi:
StevenW September 12th, 2004, 10:23 PM Thanks. I did have a great time. :)
It makes me happy to know I got to visit that great city, but it makes me sad that I had to leave. :(
What other city can deliver on great expectations like San Francisco? :?
As for the photos, I'm in the process of looking for a site to upload alot of them. I'll probably use photobucket and some of my paid space at SSP. :D
Be paitent. I'll get them posted. ;) In the mean time there are alot of great pics to drool over in this and other threads.
Oh yeah, I made it a point to take some different viewpoints pics. Alot of street scenes and "artsy" type of pics ALONG with skyline/skyscrapers pics.
I really liked the Marina District/Presideo area and North Beach AND ChinaTown! :D
The Castro was pretty cool, too.
The Mission was nice. Nob Hill, (where we stayed), was nice. Union Square was so fun! :D
Of course downtown/Financial District was awesome to gawk at. ;) :eek2:
I went daytime and night. Did ALOT of walking. Rode alot of the streetcars/buses/cablecars. :D
Had limo service every morning too. ;)
BART was cool. I did not take any taxis though. :D
Shuttle busses, yes. ;)
MAN! The food is AWESOME in San Francisco! :) :) :)
Uncle Vitos on Powell and Bush was great! We ate there twice. ;)
I'll tell you guys the rest later on. :D
lovecharlie August 11th, 2005, 05:48 AM a modern building with statues, thats rare! That Humboldt Building is so beautiful, as for many of the modern skyscrapers they were pretty ugly, i was surprised being San Francisco, but still a pretty city!

That building with statues is by architect Phillip Johnson. I really dislike it. It was built in 1983 during the height of the post-modern period.

Bravo:)
alex3000 August 27th, 2005, 09:34 AM First of all, before you all jump at me, SFO is the most beautiful city in The Americas according to me :tongue3:In case you're wondering, I've been to MXC, LA, BsAs, GDL, CDB, MDZ, PV, ACA, GTO, SD, LV, etc etc etc... Anyway... I spent three days in The City and here are the pics.
DAY 1
Ok, I'm not to tell you the story of my life, but after 10 hrs of driving -SFO is just 6 hrs away from LA. So, you try to figure out what happened. :sleepy:- we got to The City. Dancer August 27th, 2005, 09:48 AM Nice shots man
Kerfloozles August 27th, 2005, 09:52 AM I agree. Thanks for the pics. I'm finally back home in Sacramento, after being away in college for a while. I'll have to get back down there to SF sometime soon.
PaintItBlack August 27th, 2005, 10:53 AM Beautiful pics man, I'm coming back in one week (currently in exile in Orange County). I work right were a couple of those pics were taken, pier 15 on the Embarcadero :)
crazyjoeda August 27th, 2005, 11:43 AM San Francisco is a beautiful city, no doubt; but calling it the most beautiful of all the cities in North and South America is pretty subjective. Its definatly up there with Seattle, Vancouver, Rio, Banff and the other cities known for their stunning natural beauty. I just had to mention that since you brought it up:)
alex3000 August 27th, 2005, 11:54 AM San Francisco is a beautiful city, no doubt; but calling it the most beautiful of all the cities in North and South America is pretty subjective. I know. That's actually the first thing I mentioned.
" First of all, before you all jump at me, SFO is the most beautiful city in The Americas according to me :tongue3: "
I decided to put that as the thread's title because it's very hmmm eye-catching. :D But yeah, of all the major cities I've been to -México City, Buenos Aires, Los Ángeles, San Diego, Guadalajara, Córdoba, Mendoza, León, etc.- San Francisco is definitively the most beautiful city.
Whose Homepage August 27th, 2005, 11:58 AM Thank youl, alex3000! :okay:
Wonderful photos of a great city! I'm not so sure it's THE greatest (there seems to be a divergence of opinion on that). but let's just say it's AMONG the greatest ...
Btw, that "some tower" building way up there in your photo lineup is The Ferry Building. :)
*Jarrod August 27th, 2005, 12:14 PM you know what? i was just looking at pictures of sf because i do find it one of the most beautiful cities. too bad i have such slow internet...
Krzyżak August 27th, 2005, 05:50 PM Great fotos...
StevenW August 27th, 2005, 06:19 PM alex3000, those are wondefful pictures of, (IMHO IS the most beautiful city), San Francisco. :)
Thanks for posting them. I miss San Francisco. Everytime I see a new thread concerning San Francisco, I HAVE to check it out because I love the city SO MUCH! :D
Thanks again! :)
VansTripp August 27th, 2005, 09:29 PM Wow... That's nice pic :D
612bv3 August 27th, 2005, 09:56 PM Great pics Alex3000!
I have to say one thing though, Lombard is not "the crookedest street in the world". It's not even the the crookedest street in San Francisco.
rt_0891 August 27th, 2005, 10:14 PM Great Pics! To me, the only city in the Americas that rivals SF would be Rio de Janeiro. If it wasn't for the slums, Rio would be perfect.
StevenW August 28th, 2005, 01:01 AM Great pics Alex3000!
I have to say one thing though, Lombard is not "the crookedest street in the world". It's not even the the crookedest street in San Francisco.

What street in San Francisco is more crooked? :)

That's his opinion but you can have own opinion about this street. :)

I have to say one thing though, Lombard is not "the crookedest street in the world". It's not even the the crookedest street in San Francisco.
It's not??? :? OMG... That sucks!!! :( I feel dirty and disappointed now. :( Well, if that's not the crookedest street in the world, then, which one is it???? :?
OMG... I seriously feel so disappointed. :( I mean, I'm feeling the same way I felt when my mom told me that my dad was not my dad. :( Nah, I'm just kidding. :tongue3:
... It's a beautiful street, though.
sequoias August 28th, 2005, 05:36 AM nice pictures. :)

What street in San Francisco is more crooked? :)
Vermont Street.

It's located in Potrero Hill. Click on the link below and scroll down to Sights & Culture, it's the third one.

StevenW August 28th, 2005, 03:53 PM Great link, 612bv3. :)
Vermont Street looks more crooked. Well, I learned something new about the city I love, San Francisco. :D

I too share your assessment of San Francisco's beauty.
Also, StevenW, Mister SF is a great website. I've spent many hours reading up on all of the fascinating info on that web. Definately, highly recommended.

RBR September 7th, 2005, 03:30 PM Great Photos, really appreciate the work you guys put into it. SF is pretty no doubt about it but it always seems that there is a odd mix of old and new. I guess when some of the new buildings are build the city will look more 21 century if you know what i mean.

StevenW September 21st, 2005, 12:21 AM Actually, according to Mr.SF, Vermont Street, in San Francisco, is more crooked than Lombard. :) Next time I'm in San Francisco I'll have to make it to Vermont Street. :)

techniques1200s October 20th, 2005, 07:30 AM seriously? i didnt know that, why isnt this street metioned as much?
because its in the projects.
its kinda off the tourist path
612bv3 October 20th, 2005, 08:25 AM ^^ I don't think it's in the projects, it's not in the Tenderloin or Hunter's Point. It's just not as beautiful as Lombard. Lombard is very picturesque, which is what the tourist like.

StevenW October 21st, 2005, 01:35 AM seriously? i didnt know that, why isnt this street metioned as much?
probably because it's not near all the other tourist attraction and all like Lombard is. That would be my guess. :D
weill October 21st, 2005, 02:40 AM probably because it's not near all the other tourist attraction and all like Lombard is. That would be my guess. :D
makes perfect sense, its just that i lived about 3 blocks away from the crooked part (lived on lombard & van ness) so i guess that is why i would think it was more crooked i guess, i dont know :dunno:

sorry i got it confused with another street on protrero hill which is right next to the projects there. Still, it's not the most desirable part of the city to advertise to tourists. Its on potrero hill and next to the mission which are working class, with more crime and whatnot than the toursit areas of SF.

SacTown916 October 26th, 2005, 04:37 AM How many Skyscrapers (over 10 Floors) does San Francisco has? Just curious...
I-275westcoastfl October 27th, 2005, 03:48 AM Beautiful! No wonder why SF is considered one of the best cities in USA, I'd love to live there :)
Its also one of the most expensive.

techniques1200s October 27th, 2005, 06:42 AM How many Skyscrapers (over 10 Floors) does San Francisco has? Just curious...
as quoted from sfcityscape.com:
"16 buildings taller than 500 feet in the city, at least 90 taller than 90 meters, or 295 feet (the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's definition of a "skyscraper") — the third-highest total in North America — and nearly 270 structures taller than 12 stories, although no one's quite sure how many there really are"

That is one hell of a walk between the two bridges let me tell ya.
Whose Homepage December 11th, 2005, 09:51 AM Ah, Whiked! :)
In the last pic you captured, knowingly or not, the spot where Kim Novak thrust herself into the Bay, to be rescued by none other than James Stewart in Hitchcock's Vertigo. :okay: If you haven't seen the movie, go & rent it ... it shows what SF looked like decades ago.
Yes, Whiked ... it's quite a hike between the two Bridges, but what a beautiful one! :)
@firulais: yes, of course I've heard of Modesto & have been there for a conference, and I'm sure many other WC forumers (at least the CA ones) have heard of it as well. You guys are the fruit and veggie basket for us and the nation, and we appreciate it! :master:
It would be lovely if you could show us some pix of Modesto.
612bv3 December 12th, 2005, 04:05 AM When i went to Sf this August i really liked it and i live really close to, HAS ANYONE HEARD OF MODESTO, CALIFORNIA?
Who hasn't heard of Modesto after what happened to Laci Peterson.
I'm glad you liked your visit.
612bv3 December 12th, 2005, 04:11 AM That is one hell of a walk between the two bridges let me tell ya.
By the look of the pictures, you left the BB at noon and got to the GGB at dawn!
Whiked918 December 12th, 2005, 08:40 AM By the look of the pictures, you left the BB at noon and got to the GGB at dawn!
Oh yeah those pics are from 2 different trips. I just picked the best photos I had. Not to say I didn't walk there and back though.
I will try that walk agian, my Golden gate pics didn't come out that good.
vid January 5th, 2006, 09:30 AM Cool! Never seen a real china town before, looks great. Too bad they're all grainy, though.
VansTripp January 8th, 2006, 04:06 AM Not bad, it's nice chinatown.
612bv3 January 8th, 2006, 05:10 AM I just noticed that there's barely any people in your pictures. Chinatown is usually filled with people. Weird.
By the way, are there more pictures? It looks like you only visited a small part of the Oakland Chinatown.
mr_storms January 8th, 2006, 06:21 AM oakland has a chinatown? lol. Nice pics
VansTripp January 8th, 2006, 07:47 AM oakland has a chinatown? lol. Nice pics
Yeah
612bv3 January 8th, 2006, 08:48 AM oakland has a chinatown? lol. Nice pics
you never knew this? I thinks it's the 4th biggest Chinatown in the West Coast.
Whose Homepage January 8th, 2006, 09:47 AM Well, sure Oakland has a Chinatown! :)
For block after block, the street signs are "bilingual." :okay:
Looking at the area nearest Oakland's downtown and the City Hall, it would appear that quite a few old buildings were razed to make room for the dreary concrete apartment buildings that now constitute part of Oakland's Chinatown. This doesn't mean in any way that they are all horrible: there are charming interior courtyards and pleasant public spaces in between. :)
This wonderful Art Deco building, on the other hand, fortunately survives:

If I remember correctly, I went on a wednesday morning and I could not take more pictures of Oakland's Chinatow because I ran out of time:colgate:

StevenW February 18th, 2006, 03:52 PM Man! I do love my hometown of Baltimore, but I find myself coming back to San Francisco every time I can! To me it's the city that all other cities aspire to be. I'm in awe of some of those amazing pictures! Thanks, guys!
Please keep these pics coming.

schmidt April 21st, 2006, 10:57 PM Hey guys!
I'm sorry I forgot to put this thread over here (it's in the international section as well), but well, here it is. As I've mentioned in the "considerations thread", I really liked this city, and I'm sure I would have liked it much more if weather wasn't that crap, but well, I should not regret, cuz I had a great oportunity of knowing a great city.
Take a look:

Robert Stark April 25th, 2006, 01:47 AM You should try getting some them published. I could see some in a photo book.
Robert Stark April 25th, 2006, 01:49 AM Especially #19.
Robert Stark April 25th, 2006, 01:50 AM What was the intersection of #19?
schmidt April 25th, 2006, 05:08 AM ^^ I don't know the street, but it's in the far left part of pic 18.
Bay2Bay April 25th, 2006, 05:32 AM What was the intersection of #19?
California and Mason Streets.
kota16 April 26th, 2006, 09:11 AM Many moons have passed since I last saw SFO. The interesting aspect of your post is that it was timed to coincide with exactly 100 years from the earthquake on tuesday 18 April, 1906. No one else has mentioned this, including yourself. One pic of the Harbor Court Hotel on the Embarcadero looks like the old Embarcadero YMCA of the early 1970's, when it had a freeway near the roof top. You must have shopped at House of Byron in Beverly Hills before going north, for the pic on the cable car shows your friend. :)
diz April 27th, 2006, 06:57 AM these pics are incredible! GREAT JOB! :okay:
kota16 April 28th, 2006, 11:38 AM Best way for you is to take the train from San Diego all the way to Seattle, stopping off at each place on the way. Meet the people.
Silicon Francisco April 30th, 2006, 02:05 AM I like your pics, they portray SF realistically (at least during cloudy weather).

I can't wait to go there again ( T minus two weeks :D )
AZian May 28th, 2006, 07:04 AM I cant believe i've lived on the westcoast my entire life and i've never been to sanfran!! I need to go there at least once this summer. Awesome photos btw.
chicbicyclist May 28th, 2006, 07:43 AM And so hilly, too! Must be nightmare being a cyclist there.
bagel May 28th, 2006, 10:08 PM And so hilly, too! Must be nightmare being a cyclist there.
Yeah the crazy thing is that SF is also really famous for its SF hipster cyclists who insist on doing the hipster thing and ride around on fixed gear bikes-- you know, bike messenger chic and all. Whatever floats their boat. I'd rather be biking in nice geared style in SF. The clothes are cool... but don't kill yourself on your fixies... my god those hills are steep.
chicbicyclist May 29th, 2006, 12:41 AM I never really got that scene. Why not dress the part, and have a geared bicycle? Or better yet, a motor- assisted bicycle(nobody knows its a fixie and nobody cares!). I know I do, apart from the hispter clothing part. I don't like dressing a scene, especially the alternative ones. That doesnt mean I don't know how to dress, I would'nt use this name if I wasnt into that kind of stuff.
I really love the old victorian style houses, especially the ones with vivid colors. I hope to someday buy one of my own regardless of the high prices!!!!
alex3000 May 30th, 2006, 09:08 AM I'll probably go there next December. As a matter of fact, I was just looking at the hotel rates in SFO right now. LOL. If I go, I promise to take pics (and that would be the third time I make a thread about SFO with my own pics. ;) )
StevenW May 31st, 2006, 12:07 PM Very sweet! I LOVE San Francisco! Awesome CITY!!! :D
C2russ May 31st, 2006, 07:02 PM those pictures just made me miss San Francisco so much more... and the houses sweet sweet houses! awesome awesome pictures!
J.A.C. June 1st, 2006, 06:30 AM Three more weeks and I'll be there! I can't wait.
Dancer June 1st, 2006, 08:48 AM Good shots man! Gotta love that city
TheBellevueBoss June 5th, 2006, 08:23 AM nice photos....SF is the real deal...
JBOB June 7th, 2006, 03:52 AM Not my type of city but I like the density. Some of those hills aren't sports car friendly.

callanoj June 21st, 2006, 09:41 PM Does anybody have pics of the new area that was built down by Van Ness where the freeway was taken down? I heard a new boulevard was created making this area very high end.
I can't see all the pics that were originally posted here. So, maybe there are, in fact already pics.
612bv3 June 22nd, 2006, 03:45 AM ^^ You must be talking about Octavia Boulevard. I haven't seen pictures of that place lately. There's a picture here in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octavia_Boulevard .

dewback June 22nd, 2006, 06:31 AM Great pictures! Even the weather looks like the stereotypical "SF climate", lol.

ChrisLA August 21st, 2006, 03:25 PM Well its about time I posted these from my trip to San Francisco. I spent a week visiting relatives and friends the first week in July, so I’ve been both very busy at home, and a bit lazy at the same time.
Enjoy!

In and around Golden Gate Park, I covered this area on rollerblades. Not the smartest way to enjoy the park for sure, (way too many potholes, not enough smooth surfaces) next time I will use a bike.

Silicon Francisco August 22nd, 2006, 05:00 AM Awesome captures!
Even though there's no fog, sure beats the he*k out of that old Milwaukee fog pix thread that someone just HAD to post in the US forum

skymann September 1st, 2006, 03:49 PM I'm so excited about visiting SF in October.
The pics are excellent - gives me a real feel for the city
Silicon Francisco September 1st, 2006, 04:26 PM Cool, please be sure to take pictures and tell us about it!
ChrisLA September 4th, 2006, 10:13 AM Thanks all, yes October is a very good time to visit the city. You should also go up to Napa Valley, its beautiful during that time.
skymann September 4th, 2006, 03:46 PM Thanks all, yes October is a very good time to visit the city. You should also go up to Napa Valley, its beautiful during that time.
I've decided not to hire a car (was advised not to do so in SF) and after the nightmare traffic in Toronto and around Buffalo last year it's public transport or tours only from now on. We decided on day trips to Yomesite and Muir Woods - the rest of the time we're staying in the city (Hotel Nikko - any good??)
SF's public transport seems pretty good anyway. In fact all the cities I have been to in the US have had much better (and cheaper) public transport than in England. Ours is deregulated I'm afraid (Margaret Thatcher - stupid cow) so not only is it unrealiable but it's really dear too. Seattle was fab - all buses in the city centre were free, Chicago was unbelievably cheap, NYC, Philly and Boston all with great transit systems. I'm hoping for the best in SF too.
I heard that September and October sees SF at its best climate too. Seems odd, but I'm happy if that's the case. Getting excited now. Just hope those effing terrorists don't try something stupid again and cause more delays.
xzmattzx September 4th, 2006, 09:51 PM San Francisco looks great. I never realized it was that dense; it looks almost as dense as New York City.
The beach house neighborhood looks great.
My favorite picture is the one with the beach, sand dunes covered with beach grass, and houses in the distance.
Silicon Francisco September 5th, 2006, 12:43 AM Yes, the western part of the city is lined with a beach, the whole western area used to be sand dunes with unbearable winds and sandstorms. The ocean, strait and upper bay nearest to SF are underwater dunes. Such a strange contrast with the way you would might normally percieve SF.
CLTNC September 5th, 2006, 01:28 AM I was in San Fancisco in August. A very nice trip. If you get a chance go see "Beach Blanket Babylon." It is on Green Street. A very funny play.

It's good news as I've already booked tickets to see this in October when I'm in SF.
AndySocks September 6th, 2006, 09:07 AM I would have to be crazy to deny the beauty of this city.
cmj2k2 September 14th, 2006, 06:05 AM its not the beauty that gets me... its the fact its something american that actually has an original style.
pwright1 September 14th, 2006, 07:59 AM You definately captured the beauty of this amazing city. My all time favorite city in the world. Great shots.

Thanks,

i am planning a trip there in 2 weeks!!!
how long are you planning to stay?
stay at a location near union square or nob hill. a lot of transit access there.
if you want "touristy" stuff, go to the fisherman's warf.
if not, just get on some of the buses and check out all the cool neighborhoods. oh, yeah, definately check out golden gate park. i loved it!
there is SO much to see and do and eat! :D
it's hard to start, but when I do I would be here all day telling you all the great places. :)
get a muni pass and prepare to walk so have some comfortable walking shoes.
a lot of great walking trails too.
i hoped that helped some. :)

Lance December 22nd, 2006, 02:34 AM Following on from my NYC trip last year (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=206526), here are my photos from my trip to San Francisco. No strange commentary in this one though.

dewback December 23rd, 2006, 05:30 AM Great job! Sometimes I feel like exploring the city and taking pictures, but I am too lazy to do that.

Gorgeous pics. You really caught the beauty of SF and Oakland in December.
StevenW December 29th, 2006, 05:50 AM a thing of absolute beauty. :)

stepper77 December 30th, 2006, 09:23 AM Thank you for all the compliments. SF is of course one of the most beautiful cities and is especially nice this time of year. Working in Oakland though I have really come to appreciate that it has its own beauty as well.

I love the Bay and I love these pics. Great job. The one above is my favorite. Beautiful. Do you or anyone else here have any links to some good Oakland photos; perhaps from other threads here? I love Oakland, but its hard to find good pics of the city. Especially neighborhood shots (like Adams Point, Montclair, etc.).

I've been meaning to post some more pictures I've taken, but, they are mostly of downtown. There is a post on this forum with some additional downtown pictures as well here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=333118&highlight=oakland
CLTNC January 3rd, 2007, 05:40 AM San Francisco is a great place to go on vacation. I was there in July 2006 and had a great time. I stay about 2 blocks from Union Square.
Seasun January 6th, 2007, 04:36 AM It's been a few years since I was there but check out the glass elevators in the high-rise part of the St. Francis hotel on Union Square. They're among the very best glass elevators because you board them at lobby elevation and the back wall is black and you barely realize it's transparent and then it gets going and WOW! you're zooming up over the City in full daylight. On the way down it's kind of exciting because it feels like I just fell through the lower roof!
ncon January 16th, 2007, 11:56 AM this is my trip to SF and Bay Area :D 28 Dec - 13 Jan 07
